Let a pipeline's weights be any row expression of its producer's values - #107
🪭 Claude (einfold): This answers the review question on #59 and #69, whether fold pipelines are general or specific to attention.
Fusing a pipeline needs only one condition: each producer group pairs a consumer group with values of the dimensions the consumer sums away. That holds for many queries besides attention, and since #101 the producer can be any einsum or row expression. The consumer, though, was fixed to a softmax: weights exp(score), averaged. This PR makes it general too.
What changes
The IR. A pipeline's weight is now a Weight:
Weight::Exp { scale, shift }, a softmax's exp(score − shift), as before;
Weight::Of(expression), any row expression of the producer's value. Examples are a sigmoid 1 / (1 + exp(-s)) for sigmoid attention, a Cauchy kernel 1 / (1 + d²) of a squared distance, or s itself.
The sum is normalized, as before, or, with the new Normalizer::None, not. A chain of two einsums, SUM(scores.s * v.x) over scores = q · k, is then a pipeline, fused without materializing the N×M scores.
The kernel. A weight of an expression is evaluated over each row's scores of a block, with the same evaluator as row expressions (Fuse pipelines whose producer is a row expression #101), and the row's state is plain sums. Only a softmax uses the scaled accumulator. With no normalizer there's no division at the end, so a shifted row whose every score is -inf is set to NaN outright, as SQL's exp(-inf - -inf) makes it.
The detector. It finds these weights in the forms it found softmaxes in:
over a scores relation;
merged by DataFusion into the scores' projection, such as 1 / (1 + exp(-SUM(…) / 8)) directly over the aggregate, or the scores themselves;
on each pair of a CROSS JOIN, where any weight other than exp becomes the pair's score itself.
Display.EXPLAIN shows weights(<expression>) for such a weight, and unnormalized for a sum without a normalizer.
Design. Section 9.6 now says the consumer's weight is any row expression, normalized or not.
The tests check these invariants
The IR (a_weight_of_an_expression_reads_only_the_producers_value): a weight of an expression reads only the producer's value.
The kernel against SQL (pipeline_matches_sql, 1,500 cases locally) now draws:
a sigmoid or Cauchy weight, or the score itself;
any of the three normalizers;
together with the producers, masks and special values it drew before. Unnormalized sums are compared within 1e-9 of each group's Σ |w · v|, as SQL computes it; averages are compared as before. The -inf case above was found by this test.
Detection (einfold_finds_pipelines_and_changes_no_answer, 800 cases locally) adds three queries:
a sigmoid of attention's scores, averaged;
a Cauchy kernel of points over a CROSS JOIN, averaged;
SUM(scores.s * v.x), the chain of einsums.
Each must be found, fuse on complete tables, and give DataFusion's rows and values.
After CodeRabbit's review
The fused algorithm declines where it can't match SQL's special values, so that the host's plan runs:
where a larger score rescales a row whose sums of finite terms overflowed to infinity (NaN where SQL gave 0, in normalized pipelines too);
Pipeline definitions now support expression-based weights and optional normalization. DataFusion detection recognizes additional weighted plans. Fused execution evaluates expression weights and can return unnormalized sums.

Summary
Pipeline weight and normalization contract crates/einfold-ir/src/pipeline.rs, crates/einfold-ir/src/lib.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/pipeline_operator.rs, docs/design.md
The IR adds Weight::Of and Normalizer::None. Pipeline::try_new accepts a Weight, validates expression column references, and exposes weight(). The design text describes normalized and unnormalized consumers, dimension predicates, and non-attention weighted queries.
DataFusion fold and pipeline detection crates/einfold-datafusion/src/detect_folds.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/src/detect_pipelines.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/src/pipeline_node.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_pipelines.rs
Fold analysis uses closed_set to parse supported expressions. Pipeline detection recognizes score-derived weights, merged and pair-weight projections, and unnormalized plans. Pipeline descriptions and generated query cases cover the additional forms.
Fused weight evaluation and validation crates/einfold-kernels/src/fused.rs, crates/einfold-kernels/tests/pipeline_vs_sql.rs
The fused kernel evaluates expression weights, checks for overflow and non-finite cases, and skips division for Normalizer::None. SQL comparison tests cover expression weights and unnormalized sums.

normalizes accepts a normalizer whose weights differ from the numerator's weights. This changes the query answer.
Before this PR, every weight was exp(score - shift). The shift and scale comparisons were therefore enough to prove that the normalizer sums the same weights as the numerator.
This PR adds Weights::map, which makes the weight an arbitrary expression of the score. normalizes still compares only same_scores, shift and maximum_per. It does not compare map.
Trace of a wrong rewrite:
The numerator uses weights with 1.0 / (1.0 + exp(-s)) over scores.
The norm relation is SELECT i, SUM(w) FROM weights2 GROUP BY i, where weights2 uses 1.0 / (1.0 + s * s) over the same scores.
Both relations have the same fold and scale, and both have Shift::None and maximum_per == None, so same is true.
pipeline builds Weight::Of(sigmoid) from the numerator, and the kernel divides by Σ sigmoid. SQL divides by Σ 1/(1+s²).
The fused result differs from the host's answer, with no error.
The same gap applies in these cases:
The numerator is exp(s) and the normalizer sums an expression weight.
The numerator is an expression weight and the normalizer sums exp(s).
Compare map in normalizes. Also add a Decline case to query in crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_pipelines.rs. The case should have a normalizer over different weights of the same scores, such as numerator sigmoid and normalizer 1 / (1 + s * s). The existing Decline cases cover only exp weights.
As per path instructions: "above all check that a rewrite can't change a query's answer".

A pipeline's consumer was a softmax: weights exp(score), averaged. Fusion
needs nothing of the kind, only that each producer group pairs a consumer
group with values of the dimensions the consumer sums away. So a weight is
now a Weight: a softmax's exp(score - shift), as before, or any row
expression of the producer's value, such as a sigmoid 1 / (1 + exp(-s)) or
a Cauchy kernel 1 / (1 + d²); and the sum is normalized or, with
Normalizer::None, not, as a chain of two einsums SUM(scores.s * v.x) is.
The fused kernel evaluates such a weight over each row's scores of a block,
with the same evaluator as row expressions, and keeps plain sums; only a
softmax uses the scaled accumulator. The detector finds these weights in
the forms it found softmaxes in: over a scores relation, merged by
DataFusion into the scores' projection, and on each pair of a CROSS JOIN.

Makes einfold for Python releasable, and sets its first version,
`0.1.0rc1`: a release candidate, for xarray-sql (an XQL Systems project
that queries Xarray datasets with SQL) to acceptance-test before a
release. Stacked on #108, the top of the stack, so that the candidate
has everything up to it.
## Decisions to review
- **How a release happens**
([workflow](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/.github/workflows/release-python.yml),
[CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/CONTRIBUTING.md#releasing-the-python-package)).
Pushing a tag `python-v<version>` that matches `python/pyproject.toml`
builds the wheels, tests each as a user would install it, and publishes
them to PyPI, and to a GitHub release marked a pre-release when the
version is one. It uses PyPI's trusted publishing, so there's no token
to store. **One step is yours:** on PyPI, add a "pending publisher" for
the project `einfold`, with owner `xqlsystems`, repository `einfold`,
workflow `release-python.yml` and environment `pypi`. I've created the
`pypi` environment on GitHub. You could also add yourself as a required
reviewer on that environment, so that each publish waits for your click.
- **Platforms.** One abi3 wheel per platform, serving Python 3.10 and
up: Linux x86_64 and aarch64 (manylinux 2.28), and macOS arm64 and
x86_64. **Not Windows yet:** the tests use Unix's `resource` module, and
an untested wheel shouldn't ship. Tests run on Python 3.10 and 3.13.
- **The README's "What it finds"** now lists what the stack detects:
weights other than a softmax's (#107), row-expression scores such as a
Gaussian kernel's (#102), and banded masks (#98). Five new Python tests
check each of these claims through the built wheel.
- **`pip install --pre`** in the README, while einfold is in
pre-release.
## How it is tested
- All 22 Python tests pass against a locally built `0.1.0rc1` wheel. The
five new tests (window and `abs` bands, sigmoid weights, a chain of two
products, a Gaussian smoother) each check that the rows match
DataFusion's, and that einfold ran a fused pipeline.
- `actionlint` and shellcheck pass on the workflow. This pull request
changes the workflow, so it builds and tests every wheel here without
publishing.
## Not in this pull request
- Windows wheels.
- The "How fast" table hasn't been re-measured. The release candidate's
acceptance tests are what will check it.
## After CodeRabbit's review
- **After review:** macOS wheels build on macOS 15, arm64 and Intel, and
each is tested on its platform. A newer push supersedes a pull request's
run, and a tag's run is never cancelled. CONTRIBUTING.md documents
PyPI's one-time trusted-publisher setup. The Python crate's root holds
only modules: the allocator, the capsule helpers, `EinFold` and each
codec have a module of their own.
