Release einfold for Python, starting with 0.1.0rc1 - #110
Makes einfold for Python releasable, and sets its first version, 0.1.0rc1: a release candidate, for xarray-sql (an XQL Systems project that queries Xarray datasets with SQL) to acceptance-test before a release. Stacked on #108, the top of the stack, so that the candidate has everything up to it.
Decisions to review
How a release happens (workflow, CONTRIBUTING.md). Pushing a tag python-v<version> that matches python/pyproject.toml builds the wheels, tests each as a user would install it, and publishes them to PyPI, and to a GitHub release marked a pre-release when the version is one. It uses PyPI's trusted publishing, so there's no token to store. One step is yours: on PyPI, add a "pending publisher" for the project einfold, with owner xqlsystems, repository einfold, workflow release-python.yml and environment pypi. I've created the pypi environment on GitHub. You could also add yourself as a required reviewer on that environment, so that each publish waits for your click.
Platforms. One abi3 wheel per platform, serving Python 3.10 and up: Linux x86_64 and aarch64 (manylinux 2.28), and macOS arm64 and x86_64. Not Windows yet: the tests use Unix's resource module, and an untested wheel shouldn't ship. Tests run on Python 3.10 and 3.13.
pip install --pre in the README, while einfold is in pre-release.
How it is tested
All 22 Python tests pass against a locally built 0.1.0rc1 wheel. The five new tests (window and abs bands, sigmoid weights, a chain of two products, a Gaussian smoother) each check that the rows match DataFusion's, and that einfold ran a fused pipeline.
actionlint and shellcheck pass on the workflow. This pull request changes the workflow, so it builds and tests every wheel here without publishing.
Not in this pull request
Windows wheels.
The "How fast" table hasn't been re-measured. The release candidate's acceptance tests are what will check it.
After CodeRabbit's review
After review: macOS wheels build on macOS 15, arm64 and Intel, and each is tested on its platform. A newer push supersedes a pull request's run, and a tag's run is never cancelled. CONTRIBUTING.md documents PyPI's one-time trusted-publisher setup. The Python crate's root holds only modules: the allocator, the capsule helpers, EinFold and each codec have a module of their own.
The pull request adds Python release automation and updates package metadata and instructions. It adds DataFusion session components and codecs, and documents and tests additional weighted-sum query shapes.
Changes: Python package release and EinFold integration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Capsule and codec support python/src/capsule.rs, python/src/logical_codec.rs, python/src/physical_codec.rs, python/src/allocator.rs, python/src/lib.rs, python/src/bridge.rs, python/src/by_reference.rs
Capsule helpers retrieve capsule pointers and check DataFusion FFI versions. Logical and physical codec classes are added and registered in the native module. The extension selects MiMalloc as its global allocator. The ByReference documentation path is updated, and codec.rs is renamed to by_reference.rs.
EinFold session planner python/src/ein_fold.rs
EinFold exposes counters and session hooks. The planner hook checks FFI versions, clones codecs, and returns a bridge-backed planner capsule.
Weighted-sum queries and guidance python/README.md, python/tests/test_einfold.py
The README documents additional score expressions and key-comparison masks, and updates installation instructions. Tests compare five query shapes with EinFold enabled and disabled, and check for one fused pipeline.
Release validation, builds, tests, and publication .github/workflows/release-python.yml, CONTRIBUTING.md, python/pyproject.toml
The package version changes to 0.1.0rc1, and project classifiers and URLs are added. The workflow validates tag versions, builds Linux and macOS wheels and a source distribution, tests the wheels, and publishes qualifying tag releases. Contribution instructions describe release setup and testing.
Confirm the remaining release-matrix and FFI compatibility concerns and correct the fusion documentation before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 28929
Publishing is separated from pull-request builds and gated on version validation and wheel tests. The Python integration preserves its existing contracts, and no introduced security flaw was established. Release-tag protections, publishing approvals and partial-release recovery remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new privileged outcome is publication of installable einfold distributions and repository release assets. A compromised authorized release path could therefore affect downstream installations. The demonstrated authority is scoped to this package and repository; broader organization or tenant access is not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Pull-request and manual runs do not satisfy the publishing condition. Publishing requires a matching tag-push event, successful prerequisite jobs and the pypi environment. OIDC and repository-write permissions are granted only to the publishing job, which downloads build artifacts without checking out or executing package source.
observed — The documented publishing identity includes the repository owner, repository, workflow filename and pypi environment. This documents the intended authorization boundary, but does not establish the live publisher configuration, tag protections or environment approval rules.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Capsule borrows remain tied to their owning Python objects. Entry points clone values while those owners are live, propagate validation failures without returning a planner, and place produced FFI values in value-owning capsules. No new manual-free or escaping-borrow path was introduced.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Confirm release-tag restrictions and pypi environment approval rules before enabling trusted publishing, so tag creation and package publication have an explicit authorized-maintainer boundary.
proposed — Document recovery for interrupted or partially completed publication, including verification of already-published files and reconciliation of the GitHub release without replacing the intended release identity.

🪭 Claude (einfold): Done: the tests run on Python 3.10, 3.13 and 3.15, with allow-prereleases so setup-python finds 3.15 even before its final release reaches the runners. The wheel is abi3 (Python's stable ABI) for 3.10 and up, so the same wheel serves 3.15. If NumPy or PyArrow publish no 3.15 wheels yet, that job will show it, and I'll report back.

datafusion-python installs to logical_codec.rs, and codec.rs becomes
