Share the property tests' seeded generator in einfold-testkit - #108
in this stack: pipeline_vs_sql.rs, detect_pipelines.rs and expression_vs_sql.rs.
#65's original branch had a shared crate for it, einfold-testkit, but the version that merged kept its own copy. This PR adds einfold-testkit to the workspace, with #65's generator unchanged: SplitMix64, as ddx's simulation tests use (ddx is an XQL Systems project for automatic differentiation of SQL queries). It moves all seven tests onto it. The crate has no dependencies, isn't published, and only einfold's tests depend on it.
The PR sits at the top of the stack so that it can change every test file at once.
Each test's random cases now come from new streams, so a seed from before this change no longer replays the same case. Every test passes on the new streams, at its default number of cases.
After CodeRabbit's review
The generator is pinned to SplitMix64's reference outputs for seed 0.
The workspace adds einfold-testkit, a shared seeded random-number generator crate. DataFusion and kernel tests adopt its Rng API. The fused pipeline also tracks non-finite values and accumulation overflow and may decline to return a fused result.
Changes: Shared test RNG
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared RNG crate and API Cargo.toml, crates/einfold-testkit/*
The workspace registers einfold-testkit. The crate exports Rng and implements seeded draws, bounded values, probability checks, unit values, slice selection, and shuffling. Tests check reference outputs and repeatable streams.
DataFusion test migration crates/einfold-datafusion/Cargo.toml, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_pipelines.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_vs_host.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/simulation*
DataFusion detection and simulation tests use the shared Rng instead of local generators. The simulation RNG helper is removed. The pipeline tests require finite values for complete cases.
Kernel test migration and pipeline coverage crates/einfold-kernels/Cargo.toml, crates/einfold-kernels/tests/*
Kernel tests use the shared Rng. Pipeline property expectations account for special values and extreme-score cases, and a regression test covers overflowed weighted-value sums.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a present incorrect pipeline result. If pipeline returns Some with no rows, rows.iter().all(...) passes and the regression test does not detect the missing result. The fixture has exactly one expected row.

Update the regression assertion in the test around the `pipeline` result to
compare `rows` against the fixture’s single expected row, including its key and
value. This ensures the test fails when the result is empty while preserving the
normalizer context in the assertion message.

Decline when any feature sum overflows before rescaling.
special[r] covers every Y position in the row, but a has a separate sum for each position. With 64 early scores of 0, an infinite value in one Y position, and 1e308 in another, the second sum overflows. If a later score is 800, this condition suppresses the overflow flag. Rescaling then turns the second sum into NaN, although SQL gives 0 for that position. Decline whenever infinite is true, or track non-finite inputs separately for each Y position. The changed comment ends with the unexplained reference #116 and introduces “unnormalized” and “expression weights” without defining the condition. Keep the rationale in this file so readers do not need an issue lookup. Remove the reference and state the behavior directly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Seven test files each defined the same small seeded generator: four on
main, two of them from the fuzz tests of #64 and #65, and three in the
pipeline stack. einfold-testkit, a crate that only einfold's tests use,
now holds one: SplitMix64, as #65's original branch had it. Each test uses
it, so its random cases are drawn from new streams; every test passes on
them.

Makes einfold for Python releasable, and sets its first version,
`0.1.0rc1`: a release candidate, for xarray-sql (an XQL Systems project
that queries Xarray datasets with SQL) to acceptance-test before a
release. Stacked on #108, the top of the stack, so that the candidate
has everything up to it.
## Decisions to review
- **How a release happens**
([workflow](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/.github/workflows/release-python.yml),
[CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/CONTRIBUTING.md#releasing-the-python-package)).
Pushing a tag `python-v<version>` that matches `python/pyproject.toml`
builds the wheels, tests each as a user would install it, and publishes
them to PyPI, and to a GitHub release marked a pre-release when the
version is one. It uses PyPI's trusted publishing, so there's no token
to store. **One step is yours:** on PyPI, add a "pending publisher" for
the project `einfold`, with owner `xqlsystems`, repository `einfold`,
workflow `release-python.yml` and environment `pypi`. I've created the
`pypi` environment on GitHub. You could also add yourself as a required
reviewer on that environment, so that each publish waits for your click.
- **Platforms.** One abi3 wheel per platform, serving Python 3.10 and
up: Linux x86_64 and aarch64 (manylinux 2.28), and macOS arm64 and
x86_64. **Not Windows yet:** the tests use Unix's `resource` module, and
an untested wheel shouldn't ship. Tests run on Python 3.10 and 3.13.
- **The README's "What it finds"** now lists what the stack detects:
weights other than a softmax's (#107), row-expression scores such as a
Gaussian kernel's (#102), and banded masks (#98). Five new Python tests
check each of these claims through the built wheel.
- **`pip install --pre`** in the README, while einfold is in
pre-release.
## How it is tested
- All 22 Python tests pass against a locally built `0.1.0rc1` wheel. The
five new tests (window and `abs` bands, sigmoid weights, a chain of two
products, a Gaussian smoother) each check that the rows match
DataFusion's, and that einfold ran a fused pipeline.
- `actionlint` and shellcheck pass on the workflow. This pull request
changes the workflow, so it builds and tests every wheel here without
publishing.
## Not in this pull request
- Windows wheels.
- The "How fast" table hasn't been re-measured. The release candidate's
acceptance tests are what will check it.
## After CodeRabbit's review
- **After review:** macOS wheels build on macOS 15, arm64 and Intel, and
each is tested on its platform. A newer push supersedes a pull request's
run, and a tag's run is never cancelled. CONTRIBUTING.md documents
PyPI's one-time trusted-publisher setup. The Python crate's root holds
only modules: the allocator, the capsule helpers, `EinFold` and each
codec have a module of their own.

🪭 Claude (einfold): This answers the question on #69: "Isn't this defined in previous PRs, e.g. the fuzzing PRs in 64 and 65?"
It was, and in more places than that. Seven test files each defined the same small seeded generator:
main:kernels_vs_sql.rsanddetect_vs_host.rs, and the fuzz tests from Test the dense algorithm at its block edges against an oracle #64 (dense_metamorphic.rs) and Add a simulation soak of einfold in DataFusion, run nightly #65 (simulation/rng.rs);pipeline_vs_sql.rs,detect_pipelines.rsandexpression_vs_sql.rs.#65's original branch had a shared crate for it,
einfold-testkit, but the version that merged kept its own copy. This PR addseinfold-testkitto the workspace, with #65's generator unchanged: SplitMix64, as ddx's simulation tests use (ddx is an XQL Systems project for automatic differentiation of SQL queries). It moves all seven tests onto it. The crate has no dependencies, isn't published, and only einfold's tests depend on it.The PR sits at the top of the stack so that it can change every test file at once.
Each test's random cases now come from new streams, so a seed from before this change no longer replays the same case. Every test passes on the new streams, at its default number of cases.
