Summary

Composer already used @ for threads/files/machines and # for pull requests. This keeps that workflow intact and adds a local mention index so those menus feel faster, plus typed filters and tracker/design references.

What stays the same:

  • Bare @ still opens the classic mixed menu (threads, machines, files) — you do not need @thread: to mention a thread
  • # still finds pull requests

What is new:

  1. Type filters — @thread:, @file:, @pr:, @issue:, @jira:, @figma: narrow the menu to that kind
  2. Faster references — disk-backed index for PRs, threads, issues, Jira, and Figma after the first sync
  3. Jira and Figma references — Mentions settings + MCP indexing; @jira: / @figma: search the index
  4. Paste/drop links — Jira, Figma, and GitHub issue URLs attach as context chips (same idea as dropping a thread)

# also surfaces GitHub issues alongside PRs. @pr: / @issue: stay scoped when you want one kind only.

Supersedes the Phase 1/2 stack (#30952, #30968).

Test plan

  • Bare @ still lists threads (and files/machines) without typing @thread:
  • @thread:foo filters to threads only; @file:src filters to files only
  • # lists PRs and GitHub issues; @pr: / @issue: stay scoped
  • Indexed older threads appear under bare @ / @thread: after sync
  • Mentions settings: Jira spaces + Figma Browse; @jira: / @figma: return indexed hits
  • Paste atlassian.net/browse/KEY, figma.com/design/..., github.com/.../issues/N; chips attach
  • Restart server; indexed # / @ results still return
  • Labs off restores classic @ / # menus

PR mentions used live network searches on every keystroke and shared the review-comment chip. Index PRs on disk, search locally, and give them a first-class context kind so drag/paste and the # menu stay fast.
Extend the mention index beyond PRs so @ can find threads locally and Jira/Figma items come from the users configured MCP servers, with URL paste turning into context chips.
Stop indexing from project-local MCP configs, fix stdio/SSE session failure modes, and gate Jira sync on configured spaces. Keep Jira/Figma chips in sync with prompt references like threads.
Project-local MCP configs stay untrusted; stop threading a dead projectRoot through Jira/Figma syncers.
Keep file-specific PR comments from being upgraded, remint conflicting
Jira/Figma imports, and fail stalled MCP syncs instead of hanging.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds local PR/thread mention search and automatically converts pasted Jira/Figma links into context chips. The added lint suppression requires human review, alongside acceptance of the changed default composer behavior.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

This change adds a persistent mention index for pull requests, threads, Jira issues, GitHub issues, and Figma designs. It adds provider synchronization, server RPCs, settings, and indexed composer suggestions. It also adds typed composer contexts, external-link conversion, and context handling across web and mobile drafts and messages.

Changes: Composer Contexts and Mention Index

Layer / File(s) Summary
Context, index, RPC, and settings contracts
packages/contracts/src/composerContext.ts, packages/contracts/src/mentionIndex.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/source-control-core/src/server/PullRequestProvider.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestApi.ts
Schemas define pull-request, Jira, Figma, and issue context records; mention-index search, result, thumbnail, and browse payloads; and Jira/Figma settings. RPC and provider contracts add mention operations and repository issue listing.
External links and composer triggers
packages/shared/src/composerContextExternalUrls.ts, packages/shared/src/composerContextExternalLinks.ts, packages/shared/src/composerContextReferences.ts, packages/shared/src/composerTrigger.ts, apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts
Shared helpers parse supported external URLs, convert Jira, Figma, and GitHub issue links into references, project context records into provider payloads, and detect indexed mention trigger types.
Index storage and provider synchronization
apps/server/src/mention/*, apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/*
The server adds persistent ranked index scopes, thumbnail storage, and syncers for pull requests, threads, issues, Jira, and Figma. Provider issue listing is added to the pull-request service and GitHub API.
Mention service and RPC integration
apps/server/src/server.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/mentions.ts, apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/pull-requests.ts
The mention service coordinates search, indexing, thumbnail retrieval, and Figma browsing. Server WebSocket handlers, authorization and instrumentation, client atoms, and app state expose these operations.
Settings and indexed composer suggestions
apps/web/src/components/settings/*, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/ThreadSettingsSections.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerMenuItems.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-composer-command-menu.ts, packages/shared/src/composerTrigger.ts
Settings enable the mention index and configure Jira and Figma sources. Web and mobile composers search indexed providers, combine pull-request and thread results with existing results, and render provider-specific suggestions.
Composer context lifecycle and presentation
apps/web/src/composerDraftStore.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/*, apps/web/src/components/composerContextPresentation.tsx, apps/web/src/lib/composerContextRecords.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/*, apps/mobile/src/lib/*
Web and mobile composers create, import, persist, present, send, restore, and move typed context records. External URLs can be recognized in pasted text and message links when the matching context record is present.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a local mention index for composer mentions covering PRs, threads, Jira, issues, and Figma. The changeset adds a disk-backed MentionIndex service, server syncers for each provider, contracts, and composer UI for these mention types, so the title matches the primary change. It follows the conventional-commit form the template suggests. It is slightly long at 77 characters.

Import service modules as namespaces.

import { layer as threadSyncerLayer } and the named MentionIndex/make imports break the service import convention. Use import * as MentionIndexThreadSyncer from "./MentionIndexThreadSyncer.ts", then use MentionIndexThreadSyncer.layer and MentionIndexThreadSyncer.MentionIndexThreadSyncer. Apply the same change to MentionIndex. As per coding guidelines: "Consumers use a service module the same way: import * as Foo from "./Foo.ts", then yield* Foo.Foo and Foo.layer. Never import { layer as fooLayer }."

Add focused tests for the pull-request syncer.

The syncer has its own logic and no test covers it:

  • It follows cursors and stops at MAX_PAGES.
  • It calls markError when the list fails or returns partial errors.
  • It replaces the scope, so pull requests that are gone from the listing are dropped.

A regression in any of these paths makes # show stale data or a wrong error state. Add an it.effect that uses a stub PullRequestService.PullRequestService layer and the memory KeyValueStore, as MentionIndexThreadSyncer.test.ts does. The coding guidelines say: "Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior."

Capture the disk value before the gated read pauses.

The gated get reads disk.get(key) only after Deferred.await(allowRead) resumes. By then, replaceScope has written the newer blob into the same disk map. The read returns that newer blob. The test then passes even when the newer-scope guard in loadScope is removed, so it does not exercise the stale-read race it names.

Read the value before the gate, and return the captured value after it. With the guard removed, the stale blob can overwrite the newer scope and fail the ["#2"] assertion.

Use the Select primitive instead of a styled raw <select>.

The project picker restyles a raw <select> with border and background classes to look like a select control. SettingsPanels.tsx already uses the Select, SelectTrigger, SelectPopup, and SelectItem primitives for the same purpose. Switch to those primitives so the control matches the other settings dropdowns.

As per path instructions, apps/web/src/**/*.{tsx,css} must follow docs/internals/web-ui.md. As per coding guidelines, "Don't style a raw <button>, <input>, <select>, or <textarea> to look like a control a primitive provides."

Remove the scoped @ assertions that repeat the shared test.

apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts delegates scoped @kind: handling to detectAtMentionTrigger in packages/shared. packages/shared/src/composerTrigger.test.ts already asserts @jira:, @file:, @thread:, @pr:, @issue:, bare @, and #. The same cases now run again in this file.

Keep only the behavior that is specific to the web function: the hash kind for # tokens at lines 282-293. Delete the duplicated assertions, or reduce them to one @ delegation check.

As per path instructions, "Hold changed tests to the rules in docs/internals/testing.md". As per coding guidelines, "Test at one layer: the lowest one that fails on main. Do not repeat the case in a wrapper test, at each call site, or in web and mobile copies of the same logic."

apps/server/src/mention/MentionIndexMcpClient.ts: 1

35-40: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Replace the plain Error subclass with a Schema.TaggedError that carries structured, bounded attributes.

MentionIndexMcpError extends Error. The session interfaces type every failure as Error (Lines 62-66, 79). The syncers then copy failure.message into persisted scope detail and send it to clients. That message can contain raw JSON-RPC error text from an external MCP server, or a child-process error. This breaks the error rules: failures must be Schema.TaggedError classes with structured attributes, and the message must be "never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect."

Define tagged errors with these attributes:

  • server name
  • operation (initialize, tools/list, tools/call, spawn, http)
  • a normalized reason (timeout, missing-tool, binary-not-found, rpc-error, http-status)
  • cause

Build the user-facing detail from those attributes only.
As per coding guidelines: "Failures are Schema.TaggedError classes with structured attributes... The message is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect."

Use indexed pull-request results on mobile.

useComposerPullRequestSearch reads the live pull-request list for @pr: and #. If that listing fails after an index has synced, mobile cannot show the persisted pull requests. The web composer reads those indexed hits. Use the mention index for mobile pull-request suggestions, with the existing exact-number lookup as a fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Include the issue host in IssueContextRecord.contextId.

parseGitHubIssueUrl accepts GitHub Enterprise-style hosts and preserves each host in the record URL, but issueContextRecord identifies issues only by repository and number. When one paste contains the same issue on two accepted hosts, the external-link maps retain only the last record. Both chips then use that record's URL, so the first host can be sent to the provider as the second host's issue URL.

Reuse MentionIndexSettings in ServerSettingsPatch.

The inline mentionIndex patch struct repeats the field definitions and limits from MentionIndexJiraSettings, MentionIndexFigmaProjectRef, and MentionIndexFigmaSettings. The two copies match today. The stored schemas have no decoding defaults, so reusing MentionIndexSettings keeps decoding behavior the same. If one copy changes, the patch and the stored schema can diverge without a type error.

Addressed the outside-diff items from the latest CodeRabbit review in 0652734895:

  • Mobile @pr:/#: when Labs mention-index is on, mobile uses the pull-request mention index (plus exact-number detail fallback); classic live list stays for Labs off.
  • Figma a11y status: loading empty @figma: now announces “Finding Figma designs...”.
  • Issue contextId host: scoped like Jira (host:repo#n); regression for two hosts with the same issue number.

The two inline minors (useComposerContextImport pending-answer paste, Figma Flow.v2 punctuation) were already fixed earlier and remain resolved.

Use the Select primitive instead of a styled raw <select>.

The Team picker styles a raw <select> with border, background and height classes to look like a control. Select, SelectTrigger and SelectPopup already provide this control, and SettingsPanels.tsx uses them. Use the primitive so the look and behavior match the rest of Settings.

As per path instructions: "Use controls from components/ui rather than styling raw form elements to imitate them."

Reuse MentionIndexSettings for the mentionIndex patch field.

The patch struct repeats MentionIndexJiraSettings, MentionIndexFigmaProjectRef, and MentionIndexFigmaSettings field by field. Every field in those schemas is already optional, so MentionIndexSettings accepts the same shapes. If a later change updates a bound in only one copy, the settings schema and the patch schema will disagree, and a patch can then write values that ServerSettings decoding rejects.

63-81: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Use a typed error instead of raw Error in the MCP session channel.

listTools, callTool, and withSession fail with plain Error. Their messages carry remote MCP error text and stringified causes. Through synced.failure.message, the syncers persist that text with markError and send it to the UI. This conflicts with the repository rule: failures are Schema.TaggedError classes, and the message is "fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect".

Map transport and JSON-RPC failures to tagged errors at the point of failure. Give each error a bounded stage (spawn, initialize, request, timeout, http_status) and a server name, and keep the original as cause.

As per coding guidelines: "Failures are Schema.TaggedError classes with structured attributes … The message is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause".

apps/web/src/components/chat/UserMessageContextChips.tsx:553-556
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Give the Jira, Figma, and issue chips an action that opens the URL.

These three handlers render a static ContextChip with a label only. After a message is sent, the chip replaces the link in the text. The user then cannot open the Jira issue, Figma file, or GitHub issue from the message. The pull-request chip does open its target through openPullRequest.

Render the chip as an anchor when record.url is an http(s) URL. UserMessageMentionChip already uses the render prop of ContextChip this way.

Example for the Jira chip

- <ContextChip kind="file" data-markdown-copy={context.copyMarkdown}>
+ <ContextChip
+ kind="file"
+            render={<a href={record.url} target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" />}
+            data-markdown-copy={context.copyMarkdown}
+ >
             <LinkIcon />
             <ContextChipLabel>{record.label}</ContextChipLabel>
           </ContextChip>

Apply the same change to the Figma and issue handlers. Check the protocol of record.url first and fall back to the static chip for other values.

Deduplicate repeated pull-request selections.

Selecting the same PR twice creates two records with the same URL-derived contextId. The PR selection handler appends both records, and send preparation does not deduplicate them. Mobile context validation then blocks the draft before dispatch because duplicate IDs are invalid.

Reuse the existing record in the PR selection handler.

Update the PR selection handler that calls pullRequestComposerContext to reuse
an existing record when its contextId matches the new record’s URL-derived
contextId. Check for duplicates before enforcing COMPOSER_CONTEXT_MAX_RECORDS,
and append the record only when it is not already attached.

Anchor the Jira and Figma URL patterns at the start of the string.

parseJiraBrowseUrl and parseFigmaDesignUrl have no ^ anchor. parseGitHubIssueUrl and parseGitHubPullRequestUrl do have one.

An href such as https://evil.example/r?u=https://acme.atlassian.net/browse/APP-1 passes isSafeComposerContextMarkdownHref. parseExternalComposerContextHref then reads it as the Jira issue APP-1. If the message carries a matching record, the foreign link renders as a Jira chip.

Anchor both patterns so that only hrefs that start with the provider URL match. The externalLinkContextReferences rewrite and the tests pass strings that already start with the URL, so the anchor does not change them.

Keep external Markdown links in the plain-text copy value.

Ordinary supported-provider links are now collected as context references. The web copy value replaces every collected reference with its label. When no clipboard fragment exists, the copied text uses this label-only plainText, so a link such as [PR](https://github.com/acme/app/pull/42) copies as PR and the URL is lost. Keep the source Markdown for external occurrences. Context chips keep their labels.

     resolvedContext.text,
-    (reference) => reference.label,
+    (reference) => (reference.url ? reference.source : reference.label),

Skip unmatched external links in the provider envelope.

A plain link to a supported Jira, Figma, issue, or pull-request URL with no matching record still creates an envelope entry. The entry has unavailable="true", so the model receives a false unavailable context. The link itself stays in the prompt body. Skip the envelope entry only when the link has no record, and do not mark its context ID as seen.

In the envelope loop around lookupRecord, skip an occurrence when it has a URL,
no matching record, and no entry in recordsById; add its contextId to seen only
after this check. Preserve envelope entries for matched records and non-URL
occurrences, and leave the link in the prompt body.

Upstream stack top: pingdotgg#28845 at ada1a8b

Squash of the six-PR stack onto Baton main. Redesign wins on look and structure; Baton and adopted-PR features are ported into it. Non-trivial conflict decisions:

- Shared right-panel width (pingdotgg#22256): the redesign has no per-thread resizable panel (right panel is embedded in workspace panes), so the Settings row, search entry and reset entries are removed. sharedPanelWidth stays in the contracts schema, inert.
- persistComposerContextStrip dropped, following the redesign.
- Queued-run reorder (pingdotgg#28440): web UI uses the redesign's drag handle and arrow keys over the same reorderQueuedRun command; our up/down buttons are gone. Mobile unchanged.
- Transcript view (pingdotgg#27031): ported into the redesign's turn-fold model (turnFoldStartsOpen/withTurnFoldOpen take transcriptStartsOpen). The old "interrupted run opens its fold" rule is superseded by the redesign's failed/limited rule.
- Thread details stay closed (pingdotgg#25598): ThreadPanelVisibility.inlineOpen stays optional; workspace panes pass threadDetailsOpenByDefault.
- Mention index (pingdotgg#31201): jira/figma/issue item types and the Figma card grid ported into the redesign's grouped composer menu. Classic # menu shows threads only with the mention index off.
- Usage page (pingdotgg#15902): keeps UsageExplorer and range picker; the redesign's UsageOverview is dropped.
- Settings: Authorized clients/Pairing sections from the redesign, with the multi-environment access picker kept; keybindings grouping (list.* prefix) is gone with the redesign, list.* commands get flat labels.
- Baton identity: wordmark in standalone-page header dropped (element removed upstream); brand-width probe, labels and telemetry notice kept; microphone usage string branded.
- Diff header collapse toggle is no longer disabled for pending files; GitActionsControl shows the base label inside the redesign's summary row; the native title tooltip on it was dropped for lint.
- Lint conversions of Baton code to the redesign's rules: text roles instead of raw sizes, Button/Select instead of hand-styled controls, no " · " joined strings in usage and mention labels.
- Voice/speech: VoiceTranscriptionError and speech stream decode moved to the repo's Schema.TaggedError / Effect forms.
- pnpm-lock.yaml regenerated with pnpm install.
