feat(web,mobile): a Transcript view setting opens finished turns and rows - #27031
A finished turn folds its work behind Worked for …, consecutive tool calls fold under a summary such as Ran 4 commands, and on web superseded attempts fold away too. Inside those groups, each row's thinking text and tool output also starts closed. To read what an agent did across a thread, you open each of these by hand every time you open the thread, and there's no way to change the default. That's the request in Ideas discussion #12149 ("Setting to keep thinking and tool activity expanded by default"), which #14347 was closed as a duplicate of.
To reproduce on main: open any settled thread whose turns used tools. You only see the prompts, the Worked for headers and the final answers.
Change
Settings → Chat → Transcript view has three levels; mobile has the same choice under Settings → Chat. On web and desktop, a thread's menu (the title dropdown and the sidebar's right-click menu) also has a Transcript view submenu with the same three levels and the current one checked. It's a per-device client setting (transcriptView in ClientSettingsSchema, mobile preferences on mobile), so nothing new goes to the server. The submenu changes that same device-wide setting rather than a per-thread one, and it works on read-only connections because it doesn't change the thread.
Normal (default): today's behavior.
Thinking: every turn fold, tool group, and subagent group starts open, and on web every superseded-attempt fold too. Rows inside stay collapsed to one line.
Verbose: everything Thinking opens, plus each work row's own details: a thinking row's full text, and a tool call's command and output.
Every header and row still works, so you can fold any single turn, group, or row by hand. Message-level folds, such as a long prompt or an automation prompt, are unchanged.
Two more details:
In Normal, opening a group that holds only thinking rows still shows their full text as one trace. Above Normal, each thought in such a group is its own row: collapsed in Thinking, open in Verbose.
A row that can't fold never starts open, such as a mobile notification that navigates to its child thread.
Open-disclosure state already exists at two levels. Folds and groups use Sets in MessagesTimeline and a turn Set plus a tool-group record in the mobile feed. Rows use a shared expandedEntries Set on web and an expandedWorkRows record on mobile.
Instead of adding parallel "collapsed" state, both levels now hold the ids flipped away from the view's default. disclosureOpen(set, id, startsOpen) replaces each set.has(id). withDisclosureOpen replaces the places that force a fold open: find, citation jump, interrupted run, and mobile jump-to-message. transcriptFoldsStartOpen(view) and transcriptRowsStartOpen(view) say what each level opens. All four live in @t3tools/client-runtime/work-log/disclosure, shared by web and mobile. In Normal view both defaults are false, so the helpers reduce to the old has/add and nothing changes.
Edges that needed explicit handling:
Changing the view clears every flip, so the whole transcript follows the new default instead of inverting what you had toggled.
The render that clears the folds hands the cleared values straight to derivation, so rows are derived once.
Web rows keep local state, so a view change also starts a fresh row-state object and remounts tool lists and standalone rows (they're keyed by view).
A thread's remembered position and folds (rememberTimelinePosition) record the view they were saved under. Under any other view the thread opens fresh, because a scroll offset from another layout points at the wrong place.
Standalone rows. A tool row outside a group used to keep its open state only while mounted. In Verbose it now keeps its flip in the timeline's row state, so a row you closed stays closed when it scrolls away and back. In Normal and Thinking these rows behave as today.
A newer run closes the previous run's fold in Normal view, whether an interrupt or you opened it (existing behavior). Thinking and Verbose skip that step, so a fold you closed stays closed.
Sizing. A web tool group grows its scroll box for rows you open by hand, as today. In Verbose every row is open, so the box keeps its normal capped height and scrolls inside instead of becoming a scroller taller than the window. On mobile, fixed row heights count only rows that can expand.
Mobile lone tool calls already sync their details into their group so they survive a second call joining. Above Normal the group is open anyway, so that sync is skipped.
The user guide's activity log page (docs/user/activity-log.md) gets one paragraph on the three levels and where to set them.
Costs, by design. In Verbose, an open tool row loads its output as it renders, which is what happens today when you open one by hand. A fold over a very large finished turn loads that turn's deferred history when it opens, and above Normal that happens as it scrolls into view. Each of these is the same work as opening every item yourself. The lists stay virtualized, and tool groups keep their capped height.
Scope and approval
#12149 has six upvotes and several +1s but no maintainer direction yet, so this PR doesn't have the approval CONTRIBUTING asks for on features. I'm proposing it as a focused configuration option for an established capability. Today you can open every fold, group and row by hand. This option changes which state they start in, and above Normal it skips the newer-run auto-collapse so a fold you closed stays closed. It adds no timeline rows or content, and Normal keeps today's behavior and stays the default.
The levels follow the Normal / Thinking / Verbose suggestion in #12149, with these differences from what's proposed there:
The setting is global per device rather than per thread.
The thread-menu submenu sets the same device-wide value as Settings, so you can change levels while reading a thread instead of leaving it. It shares the setting's labels and state and adds no other behavior. If the maintainers would rather keep the choice in Settings only, the submenu comes out cleanly: it lives in threadActionMenu.logic.ts, its two menu handlers, and one icon.
If the maintainers would rather settle the shape in #12149 first, that's reasonable.
All evidence comes from the posted commit. Before / after (web, same settled thread, 1440×900 @2x, headless Chromium against an isolated dev server with a copied database):
Before (main)
Normal (unchanged)
Thinking
Verbose
Thread menu → Transcript view
Choosing Thinking there
Settings → Chat before
Settings → Chat after
Verbose further down the same turn shows more tool output:
In Verbose, a single turn can still be folded:
The screenshot thread is a copy of a real thread. In the isolated copy, I reworded its two prompts and removed one command whose output was a private local file; the before and after shots both use that same copy.
A 28-second recording goes Normal → Thinking → Verbose from Settings. It folds one thinking row and then the whole turn by hand, and switches back to Normal from the thread menu:
web-transcript-view.mp4
Tests. The web and mobile tests below fail against main's implementation and pass with this change.
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts: the Worked-for fold case now also asserts three things. Thinking with no flips equals Normal with every disclosure opened. A flipped turn or group closes. Verbose derives the same folds as Thinking. The superseded-attempt case gains Thinking assertions.
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx has six tests:
Thinking opens finished turns, keeps a fold the user closes, and starts over when the view changes.
Find reveals a match inside a fold the user closed.
Remembered folds restore only under the view they were saved in.
Verbose opens each row, keeps the row the user closes, and resets for Thinking.
A thinking-only group stays as foldable rows above Normal.
A standalone row closed in Verbose stays closed after its turn folds and reopens.
apps/web/src/components/threadActionMenu.logic.test.ts: the menu offers the three levels with the current one checked, and they stay enabled on read-only connections. The parser maps only real level ids.
apps/web/src/hooks/useThreadActionMenu.test.ts: choosing Verbose from the title menu updates the device setting even when the connection can't change threads.
apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts: the same derivation case for the mobile feed, plus Verbose matching Thinking there.
packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/disclosure.test.ts: unit tests for the helpers.
The tests above catch each of these mutations:
web or mobile derivation ignoring the view;
flips kept across a view change;
a closed fold reopening when a newer run starts;
find not forcing its fold open;
remembered disclosures restoring under either view;
web rows ignoring Verbose;
tool lists keeping rows' local state across a view change;
thinking-only groups opening as one trace above Normal;
standalone rows forgetting a Verbose flip;
the menu treating Transcript view as a thread change, which would block it on read-only connections.
vp run check:changed upstream/main passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck of 36 affected packages, tests beside the changes, and React Compiler. The apps/web build and vp run build:desktop both succeed. Their only warnings are the existing chunk-size note and dependency warnings (effectimport.meta, dbus-nextx11).
Not checked:
Mobile UI. I couldn't run the mobile app or capture mobile screenshots. Mobile derivation is tested and mobile typechecks. The mobile row-level paths have no test: expandedWorkRows defaults, rows that can't fold, thinking-only groups and fixed heights in thread-work-log.tsx, plus the ThreadFeed view-change reset, jump-to-message, newer and interrupted runs, and the lone-row sync.
The Verbose tool-group height is checked only in the screenshots, not by a test.
A running turn in Thinking or Verbose. The live tool group and its rows start open while streaming; that isn't captured or tested.
Other web auto-open paths above Normal: the citation jump, the interrupted run, and find revealing a match in a superseded attempt. Find in a turn fold is tested.
The desktop app wasn't launched. It renders the same web timeline and persists the whole client settings schema, so the new key rides along without desktop changes. Desktop shows thread menus natively, and Electron renders checked items as checkboxes; I didn't see that menu on screen.
The sidebar's right-click menu uses the same menu model and handles the choice the same way as the title menu, but only the title menu's handler is tested.
Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running inside T3 Code. GPT-6-Astra (max) reviewed it via T3 Code and found three issues:
Thinking opened thinking-only groups as one trace.
Standalone rows forgot a fold made in Verbose.
Mobile notification rows opened when they can't fold.
A Claude review workflow found two more: Verbose tool groups growing taller than the window, and a remembered scroll offset being reused under another view. All five are fixed above. A final GPT-6-Astra pass over the thread-menu submenu found no defects.

…rows
Finished turns fold their work behind "Worked for", tool calls group under a
summary, superseded attempts fold away on web, and each row's thinking text
and tool output starts closed, so reading what an agent did means opening
each one by hand. Settings → Chat → Transcript view picks Normal (today's
behavior), Thinking (every turn, tool group, subagent group and superseded
attempt starts open) or Verbose (each row's details open too), on web,
desktop and mobile. On web and desktop the thread menu offers the same
choice.
Disclosure state now holds the ids flipped away from the view's default, so
manual toggles and the find, citation, interrupt and jump-to-message
auto-open paths all go through shared helpers, and anything can still be
closed by hand. Changing the view clears the flips, and a thread remembered
under another view opens fresh.
