fix(evals): resume browser verification after unavailable status - #30298
The test-t3-app skill told agents to stop when preview_status reported the Browser panel unavailable. That can happen when no tab exists, even though preview_open can recover without user action.
Change
Try preview_open before declaring verification blocked. Add a reproducer that resumes immediately after the skill read and unavailable status, plus an existing-tab control. The eval runner loads prior results from repository files and supports resuming without injecting a user message, with empty-prompt replay limited to ordinary top-level threads. Side-chat and subagent setups require a prompt. The two browser fixtures are Claude-only because that is the replay format we validated.
Scope and approval
The maintainer requested this fix and its reproducer. The scope remains browser verification guidance and evaluation replay.
Verification
On Opus, the old skill stopped without opening a tab in all three focused samples; the updated skill opened a tab in all three.
Both browser cases pass in full Sonnet and Opus runs, with 146 samples per model. Those runs also have model misses in pre-existing cases whose request payloads are identical to main.
All 144 pre-existing cases generate requests identical to main. The replay bounds preserve all 146 payloads from the completed full runs.
The unsupported replay assertions failed before the guard and pass afterward. vp run check:changed passes, including all 411 affected eval tests.
The original Codex model was not tested. General Codex replay output wrapping requires separate validation.
- Reuse an existing Browser tab and retry opening when status reports no tab
- Support file-backed prior tool results and resume cases without a new prompt
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The eval runner now supports file-backed tool results and resuming top-level replays without an extra user message. The change is confined to evaluation tooling, with explicit guards for unsupported replay contexts and no material production exposure in the assessed scope.

Walkthrough
The eval harness now supports loading prior tool results from repository-relative files and resuming top-level threads without adding an empty user prompt. The visual-preview instructions and eval cases cover reuse of an available tab and recovery when no tab can be automated.

Summary
Prior tool result replay and prompt resumption evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/run.test.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/README.md
Prior tool calls can load results from repository-relative files. Case filtering occurs before result files load. Empty prompts resume top-level threads without adding an empty user message; empty prompts with side-chat context or non-top-level roles are rejected. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.
The instructions call preview_open when no tab can be automated, including when status reports available: false or tabId: null. Eval cases check reuse of a usable paired tab and opening a tab when none is available.
The guidance now attempts to open a preview when no tab is available. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the skill bug and the fix, and it states that the maintainer requested the fix. It gives focused and full-run verification results and names the model and harness. It leaves out a screenshot or recording, but the change is guidance text and does not need UI evidence. It also omits the template's HTML comments, which is expected. The Scope section cites a maintainer request but does not link the triaged issue or approval comment, so the reviewer may need that link to confirm approval.

The new browser-resume cases also run on Codex. This emits the raw result, but live code-mode calls return an object: Bash returns output and exit_code, while T3 tools return content and structuredContent. Codex therefore resumes from a different transcript than it would see during the original failure. Serialize prior results using the same shape as executeCodex. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts around lines 719 - 721:
Update the custom tool-call output construction to preserve the result shape
used by executeCodex: serialize prior Bash results with output and exit_code,
and T3 tool results with content and structuredContent, rather than emitting
only valueText(block.content). Ensure resumed Codex transcripts match the shape
produced during the original tool call.
Addressed the Codex replay concern by marking the two new browser fixtures Claude-only in 2a76656. Their tool-result replay was validated through the Claude harness. Changing the general Codex serializer would broaden this browser-instruction fix and needs separate validation; the PR continues to state that the original Codex model was not tested.
Both new browser cases pass in the full Sonnet and Opus runs. Those full runs also contain model misses in pre-existing cases; all 144 pre-existing cases generate requests identical to main, so those are outside this change. The side-chat fix preserves all 146 request payloads from the completed full runs.
