Change

The server answers uncompressed. A conversation page is JSON of up to a few megabytes (tool inputs and trimmed outputs), fetched on every session switch and polled every 2 s while it changes, and the app's script is 1.2 MB. On a slow link — a relayed Tailscale connection, a phone — those bytes are most of a session switch.

server/compress.ts wraps the fetch handler's answer: a finished 200 of a text type (JSON, HTML, CSS, JS, SVG, plain text), for a request that accepts gzip, from 1 KB up, is gzipped (content-encoding: gzip, vary: accept-encoding, ETag kept). Untouched: the event stream (SSE), WebSocket upgrades, 304s, images, fs/file (it streams, any size), attachments, range answers and anything already encoded. Static bundles are the same bytes on every load, so their gzip is kept by content hash (32 entries).

The machine relay is not affected: it copies an allowlist of headers and the decoded body. The notification-startup probe's own proxy now asks for identity: Bun's fetch adds gzip to a missing accept-encoding, unzips the body and keeps the header, so the browser behind the probe would unzip twice.

Validation

  • server/compress.test.ts: gzips a large JSON answer and keeps its headers; leaves identity, small bodies, SSE, images, 304, fs/file and an absent response alone.
  • bun run generate:types --check, bun run typecheck, bun run build pass. bun run test:unit: 1929 pass, 1 fail (voice transcribe > streams deltas and the done text from a split SSE answer), which fails the same way on main here. bun run test:ui: passes (87 PASS).

A conversation page is uncompressed JSON of up to a few megabytes, fetched on every session
switch and polled every 2 s while it changes. Over a slow link (3 Mbit/s, 150 ms: a relayed
Tailscale connection or a phone) a switch to a 2.1 MB session took 7.5 s; gzipped (0.51 MB) it
took 3.2 s. The app's script goes from 1.2 MB to 0.38 MB on first load.

server/compress.ts wraps the fetch handler's answer: only a finished 200 of a text type, for a
request that accepts gzip, from 1 KB up. The event stream, WebSocket upgrades, 304s, images,
`fs/file` (streamed, any size), attachments, ranges and anything already encoded pass untouched.
Static bundles are the same bytes on every load, so their gzip is kept by content hash.

The notification-startup probe's proxy now asks the server for identity: Bun's fetch adds gzip to
a missing accept-encoding, unzips the body and keeps the header, so the browser would unzip twice.
The machine relay is not affected: it copies an allowlist of headers and the decoded body.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Large JSON and text responses are now gzip-compressed when supported by the browser, reducing transfer sizes and potentially speeding up loading.
    • Responses identify when their content may vary by compression support, and unchanged-response checks work across compressed and uncompressed versions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Small responses, event streams, attachments, range responses, and already-encoded content remain uncompressed.

Walkthrough

The server now gzip-compresses eligible responses when requests accept gzip. The fetch handler applies compression, and conversation ETags use weak validators. The startup regression proxy requests identity encoding.

Changes

Response compression

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compression rules and validation
server/compress.ts, server/compress.test.ts
compressResponse negotiates gzip, filters responses, and compresses eligible bodies of at least 1,024 bytes. It caches some gzip output, sets Vary and Content-Encoding, removes Content-Length, and weakens strong ETags. Tests cover negotiation, compression, cache behavior, and responses that remain unchanged.
Request-boundary wiring and related updates
server/index.ts, server/codex.contract.test.ts, scripts/notification-startup-regression.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The fetch handler passes route responses to compressResponse. Conversation ETags use weak validators, and the contract test expects a weak ETag. The regression proxy sets accept-encoding to identity. The changelog describes gzip responses.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85d82

The remaining gap is in cache test coverage, not a demonstrated failure of compressed responses. The change is mergeable with a targeted test follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85d82

The inspected access controls remain in place, and no introduced security weakness was established. The main uncertainty is resource and cancellation behavior during interrupted requests, together with deployment-specific exposure.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed representation behavior reaches eligible local responses and authorized machine-proxy responses returned by the same server. Public static files can also trigger compression. The inspected paths do not add arbitrary remote targets or new credentials; machine targets and outbound authentication remain selected by the existing proxy.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced authorization bypass or cross-response data substitution was established in the inspected paths. Cached entries contain only content-addressed gzip bytes, while current-response headers are cloned separately and API bodies bypass retention. This conclusion does not establish the absence of deployment-specific compression side channels.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing session and device cookies use HttpOnly and SameSite=Strict. The machine proxy enforces origin restrictions and uses an explicit outbound header set with the selected machine token; its reconstructed ordinary responses do not forward remote cookies or encoding headers. These controls predate this PR and remain relevant counterevidence to expanded cross-origin exposure.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The helper excludes filesystem file responses, SSE, attachments, ranged responses and already encoded responses. These exclusions preserve existing stream containment paths. Ordinary remote machine bodies retain their existing request, revocation and timeout cancellation controls before local compression begins.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For resource-containment-sensitive deployments, consider an explicit cancellation policy and compression work budget. The retained-byte cap does not bound the full input buffer or synchronous gzip work, so interrupted-request and peak-load behavior should be validated independently of cache retention.

Thanks for this. I reviewed 6a08054 in full (there was no earlier maintainer review of this PR), merged it locally onto main at v0.4.2 (b82584d), and measured what it changes on real answers. This is a comment, not a request for changes.

Merge state

  • It merges cleanly with v0.4.2; GitHub shows the branch one commit behind.
  • "Fast checks" and "Integration and browser" have not run on this head. Only CodeRabbit ran, and its thread on server/compress.ts:17 is still open.

What the numbers say

All numbers are from this desktop (Ryzen 9 5950X, Bun 1.4.2). I took three real Claude transcripts and one real Codex rollout from this PC, read them through transcriptPage from this branch (the function /api/pane/conversation answers with), and gzipped them with Bun.gzipSync(level 6) as compress.ts does. I also used the bundle that bun run build produced on the merged tree.

Answer Plain gzip Ratio gzip time (median of 7)
Claude conversation page, 1 MB transcript 189 KB 54 KB 0.28 1.5 ms
Claude conversation page, 30 MB transcript 618 KB 171 KB 0.28 5.4 ms
Claude conversation page, 34 MB transcript 341 KB 100 KB 0.29 4.1 ms
Codex conversation page, 37 MB rollout 736 KB 175 KB 0.24 5.2 ms
index-*.js 1,130 KB 353 KB 0.31 11.3 ms (once, then kept by hash)
index-*.css 202 KB 41 KB 0.20 1.6 ms
  • Size: the CHANGELOG's "about a quarter" for a conversation page and "about a third" for the script both hold.
  • Loopback: I served the same bodies from a small Bun.serve with and without compressResponse and fetched each one 7 times with curl --compressed. It is slightly slower with the PR: 2.9-3.1 ms against 1.3-1.7 ms for a 630-750 KB page, and 4.6 ms against 1.5 ms for the bundle through the real createServer. On a LAN or loopback this PR costs a little and gains nothing visible.
  • Slow link: at 2 Mbit/s a 618 KB page takes about 2.5 s to transfer, and its 171 KB gzipped form about 0.7 s. With curl --limit-rate 250K, the bundle went from 3.8 s to 1.15 s. The "about twice as fast" in the CHANGELOG is plausible for a relayed Tailscale link, but I did not measure one.
  • Remote PC: I did not measure through a real remote bridge; no remote PC was available here. From the code: the machine proxy (server/machine-api.ts, non-file paths) reads the remote answer through fetch, which decodes it, and rebuilds the headers without content-encoding. So nothing is encoded twice, and this server gzips the proxied answer for the browser at once. The SSH hop between this server and the remote PC is compressed only once the remote bridge itself runs this code, which needs a new remote bundle (REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION).

In short, this is neither a bug fix nor something required. It helps a phone or a relayed link noticeably and costs a few milliseconds of CPU per answer everywhere else. Whether that trade is wanted is the owner's call.

Checked against the real server

I ran createServer from the merged tree (no herdr reachable, so only static files and /api/health answer) next to one from v0.4.2, and probed both with curl:

  • The WebSocket upgrade still answers 101 Switching Protocols on /ws with Accept-Encoding: gzip.
  • woff2 fonts and other non-text types are untouched. /api/fs/file and the machine proxy's /fs/file are skipped by path, and the SSE stream (/api/machines/events) by type.
  • Error answers (any status but 200) pass unchanged.

Findings

No High or Medium. Lows, each confirmed as stated:

  1. A range request for a static file with Accept-Encoding: gzip gets the whole file (server/compress.ts:24). serveStatic returns a Bun.file response, and Bun applies the Range header only after fetch returns, so compressResponse sees a plain 200 with no content-range. Measured on /assets/index-*.js with Range: bytes=0-99: v0.4.2 answers 206 with 100 bytes, this branch answers 200 with the whole gzipped file (361,684 bytes). The file's header comment says a range answer passes untouched, which holds for /api/fs/file but not for static files. Fix: return early when the request has a Range header.
  2. gzip;q=0 still gets gzip (server/compress.ts:17). /\bgzip\b/ matches any mention of gzip. Measured: Accept-Encoding: gzip;q=0, identity gets Content-Encoding: gzip. No browser sends this, so it does not matter in practice. CodeRabbit's open thread is the same point.
  3. HEAD describes a different representation than GET (server/compress.ts:21). HEAD with Accept-Encoding: gzip answers the plain content-length: 1156656 and no Vary, while GET answers gzip.
  4. The plain variant carries no Vary: accept-encoding (server/compress.ts:21, the early return). A shared cache in front of the server (a reverse proxy, as docs/guide.md describes) could store the plain answer for everyone. That direction is harmless, since every client accepts identity, but Vary belongs on both variants.
  5. The conversation's strong ETag is shared by the gzip and plain bodies (kept at server/compress.ts:28). The chat's 304 path works because the client compares the version, not bytes. A weak W/ validator would be the strict form. Low, no visible effect.
  6. CPU and memory, as a note rather than a defect. Bun.gzipSync runs on the event loop that also carries terminal output and ACKs: 1.5-5.4 ms per real conversation page here, more on a slower PC or a Raspberry Pi, and once per changed page per poll. The kept cache holds up to 32 gzipped bodies with no byte cap; with real pages that is a few MB. Static files are now read whole into memory and hashed on every request, where Bun used to send them from the file.
  7. CHANGELOG entry lands in a released section. v0.4.2 was cut after this branch, and its ## [0.4.2] heading now sits between ## [Unreleased] and this entry. Git merges the two without a conflict, and the entry lands under ## [0.4.2] → ### Changed (line 33 of the merged file), a release that does not contain it. It needs to move under ## [Unreleased]. It also has no PR link or credit; the convention is ([#615](https://github.com/devswha/herdr-web-ui/pull/615) by @Haeminway1).

What I ran

On the merged tree (b82584d + 6a08054):

  • bun run check fast (generated types, typecheck, build, unit suite): passed. Output: exit 0.
  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/compress.test.ts: 2 pass. It was run by the Codex pass; it is also part of the unit suite above.
  • bun run check run bun scripts/ui-regression.ts (it includes the notification-startup-regression this PR changes): 85 PASS lines, 0 failures, exit 0. The browser took gzipped answers from this branch's server for the whole run, including notification startup: real worker messages retain the newest pane before App subscribes.
  • An adversarial review pass with another agent (Codex) over the diff. Its findings are 2-5 above; I confirmed each one on the running server. I rated its Medium on synchronous compression as a note (point 6) after measuring real pages at 1.5-5.4 ms rather than its synthetic 2 MiB body at 31 ms.

For the owner to decide

  • Whether gzip is wanted at all, given the numbers: a clear gain on a slow link, a few ms more per answer on loopback.
  • If it is wanted: whether point 1 (ranges) should be fixed before a merge, and whether a remote bundle bump should carry it to remote bridges.

…ed answer

- Accept-Encoding qualities are read: gzip;q=0 (or *;q=0) refuses gzip.
- Only static bundles keep their gzip, keyed by SHA-256 within an 8 MB
budget; an /api answer is never kept, so two answers whose Bun.hash
collide can no longer swap bodies.
- Vary: accept-encoding goes on the plain answer, HEAD and 304 too.
- The conversation ETag is weak (W/"v"): the gzipped and plain bodies are
different bytes. If-None-Match is compared without the W/ prefix.
- CHANGELOG: link the PR and credit the author.

Comment thread server/index.ts Resolved
A lazily read static file can reject in response.arrayBuffer() after the
route answered; compressResponse now returns errorResponse(error) instead of
letting fetch reject into Bun's default error. Found by CodeRabbit.

42-51: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise the actual gzip-cache key.

compressResponse does not keep /api/ gzip results, and gzipOf keys kept results with Bun.CryptoHasher("sha256"). Therefore, the Bun.hash spy cannot force a collision, and this test does not exercise the gzip cache. Replace it with a static-asset test for distinct bodies. The replacement checks cache separation, not a hash collision, because the two bodies have different SHA-256 keys.

## Change

Release 0.4.6, from main at 2ae281d (24 PRs since v0.4.5: #615,
#693-#748).

- `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`: 0.4.6.
- CHANGELOG: `[Unreleased]` becomes `[0.4.6] - 2026-10-11`. #615's entry
moves out of the 0.4.2 section, where its branch's merge left it. #697
and #695 get their links and credits. A Maintenance section covers #738,
#733 and #696. The compare links are fixed.
- `release-summaries.json`: 0.4.6 in en/ko/ja/zh (5 new, 3 improved, 5
fixed).
- `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 24 -> 25. Bridge routes were added since
v0.4.5 (plugin actions, integrations, pane
split/zoom/swap/resize/clear/move/focus, tab move, find, layout ratio,
agent rename), so `remote-v25` is published before the app release.

## Validation

- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.6` renders the summaries and the
full changelog.
- `bun run typecheck` and `bun run test:unit` pass: 2459 tests, 0 fail.

…#757)

Closes #434, Closes #530

Supersedes #730, #689

## Change

Two chat features from outside contributors, rebased onto `main` after
0.4.6, with each contributor kept as the commit author:

- **SendUserFile files as openable links** (#730 by @bluzername). The
chat no longer shows a `SendUserFile` call's raw JSON. It shows the
caption and opens each file in the existing file viewer, the same way
any other tool's `file_path` opens. There is no new route and no new
access rule. CodeRabbit's review finding is fixed: rows are keyed by
position, so a path listed twice no longer gives React a duplicate key.
- **The conversation is read when its transcript changes, not every 2
s** (#689 by @zerodice0). The bridge advertises `conversation-watch`. A
visible Chat asks for `conversation-changed` pushes on its existing
WebSocket (`server/conversation-monitor.ts`: one 250 ms stat loop per
watched pane, no turn parsing). The client
(`src/lib/conversationRefresh.ts`) reads at most once every 2 s from
pushes, with a 10 s backstop. Without pushes it falls back to the old 2
s poll. That covers an older bridge or a released pane. The demo
transport (`site/demo/transport.ts`) answers the new frame.

### Conflict resolution against `main`

- #615 landed first and gzips every text answer (`server/compress.ts`)
with weak ETags. So #689's conversation-only gzip negotiation
(`conversationResponse`) is dropped, along with the relay's
`content-encoding` pass-through in `server/machine-api.ts` and the tests
for both (`api.contract.test.ts` "conversation response encoding",
`machine-proxy.test.ts`). This is what #689 itself proposed if #615
landed first. The conversation endpoint keeps main's weak ETag and 304
handling.
- `server/codex.contract.test.ts` keeps main's weak-ETag assertion.

### Remote PCs

`MachineRelay` forwards client frames unchanged, so `conversation-watch`
reaches a remote bridge, and that bridge's `snapshot` decides whether
the feature is used. **`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` is deliberately not
raised (maintainer release step): the remote bundle needs a bump at
release** before remote PCs get pushes. Until then, a remote PC's bridge
(remote runtime v25) does not advertise `conversation-watch`. The client
sends it no unknown frame, and its Chat polls every 2 s as before. A new
`ws.test.ts` case covers this.

## Verification

Run on Linux x64 against an isolated herdr test session
(`HERDR_TEST_SESSION=herdr-web-ui-test-l7`), never the user's session:

- `bun run typecheck`: pass. `bun run build`: pass.
- `bun run test:unit`: 2470 pass, 8 skip, 0 fail.
- `bun test ./server/conversation-push.contract.test.ts
./server/api.contract.test.ts ./server/codex.contract.test.ts`: 119
pass, 0 fail.
- `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./src/lib/ws.test.ts
./src/lib/conversationFetch.test.ts ./src/lib/sendUserFile.test.ts
./server/machine-proxy.test.ts ./server/compress.test.ts`: pass. The new
older-bridge case in `ws.test.ts` fails when the `conversation-watch`
feature check in `HerdrSocket.attach` is removed (checked, then
restored).
- `bun scripts/chat-browser-qa.ts`: all 8 PASS, including "send refresh
preserves history and slow refreshes do not overlap".
- `bun scripts/chat-history-browser-qa.ts`: all PASS.
- Demo transport: `chat-greeting-demo-regression.ts`,
`held-rows-demo-regression.ts`, `prompt-dock-demo-regression.ts`: PASS.
- SendUserFile, real surface: a one-off Playwright check on an owned
herdr pane with a Codex rollout containing a `SendUserFile` call (two
copies of the same path plus a caption). The work row shows the caption
and two `Open <path>` links, with no raw JSON and no React key warnings.
Clicking a link opens the file viewer with the file's contents.
- `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check full` on the branch after merging
`main` (5792d71, #755): integration and browser lanes `ok`.

### Test fixes found on the way

- `conversation-push.contract.test.ts`, "releases native interest when
the owned pane ends…": failed once on CI (timed out waiting for
`pty-exit`). The bridge accepts a `conversation-watch` as soon as an
attach is recorded, before the mirrored attachment is created. A pane
closed in between answers the attach with an error, not `pty-exit`.
Reproduced locally by delaying attachment creation by 2 s: the old test
failed the same way (12 s timeout), the fixed one passes. The test now
waits for the attach to join (the mirror's `pane-geometry`) before
closing the pane. Product behaviour is unchanged.
- Following CodeRabbit's review, the same suite now keeps its omp store
under a temporary `HOME`, as `server/omp.contract.test.ts` does, instead
of writing into the real `~/.omp/agent/sessions`.

`main` (5792d71, #755) is merged in; the only conflict was
`CHANGELOG.md`.
