Onboarding PR 4 of 4, rebuilt on the V6 setup guide (#2332, merged): ways for people who already use Ovis to add an agent, and to open the guide again. It replaces #2330, which was built on the old step guide and its setup card. #2330's picker row, add panel, Settings list and browser regression are kept here; its card, sign-in and step-status pieces are not.

Change

  • The guide's agent tile is shared. AgentTile (and AgentTile.css) moves out of SetupGuide.tsx. It is a move only: class names are kept, and onPick, onRunning and onError became optional. An installed tile with no onPick is shown but not pickable.
  • Add another agent… is the last row of the agent picker in New workspace, New tab and New worktree.
    • It shows the agents the dialog's PC lacks, and a picker can start, as tiles.
    • Install is the one tap, and that tap is the user's consent. The official installer runs in a terminal tab while a ring turns on the tile until the PC lists the agent. Then the dialog reads the PC's agents again and picks it.
    • There's no setup card and no sign-in step: the agent asks for its sign-in when it first starts. An in-browser sign-in UI is the next PR.
    • Back keeps what was typed.
  • Settings → Agent integrations:
    • Open setup guide sits at its top. It shows only on this PC's page, and it closes Settings and opens the V6 guide (lib/setupGuide.ts).
    • Then come the PC's installed agents with their versions, then the agents it can install, as the same tiles. Install errors show in a line.
    • herdr's integrations stay below.
    • The palette's "Setup guide" points at that row. feat(onboarding): add an agent from the pickers and Settings, and reopen the setup guide #2330's separate Setup guide page, with its step status, is gone.
  • A watching device gets none of this: no Add another agent…, no Install, no Open setup guide.
  • Server, with no contract change (same installed field):
    • GET /api/agents offers an agent only when a PATH a pane's shell starts it from has it (the service PATH, or the login shell's).
    • A hit in the agent's installer folder (detect.install_dirs) has the login PATH read again (server/installed-lookup.ts): at once for a new install, then at most every 30 s while it still misses. Reads that come during a refresh wait for it.
    • The catalog's and the shell-agent locator's refreshes coalesce, queued after any read already out.
  • After Add another agent… installs one, the dialog waits with its fields off ("It is installed. Waiting for this PC to offer it here…") and reads the agents again every 10 s from each read's start, at most 70 s. Each read's outcome is taken once, so a slow, failed or stalled read never locks it and a late answer never overrides the user (src/lib/latestRead.ts, readAgainUntil).
  • A guide reopened from Settings changes no setting: it doesn't turn plan usage on, nor say it will. The mark survives a reload.
  • Dialog reads: a creation dialog's agent list applies only its latest read (lib/latestRead.ts).

Validation

  • Tests that fail first (also for the merge pass's two MEDIUMs: server/installed-lookup.test.ts, server/agents-routes.test.ts, server/shell-agent.test.ts, server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts, src/lib/latestRead.test.ts on a virtual clock, src/components/NewSessionDialog.test.tsx mounted closed→open→closed, src/lib/setupGuideFlow.test.ts):
    • AgentPicker.test.tsx: the Add row is last, opens the add flow, picks no agent, and is reachable with End then Enter.
    • agentList.test.ts.
    • latestRead.test.ts.
    • server/agents-routes.test.ts: an agent found on the login PATH counts as installed.
    • server/shell-agent.test.ts: a kind installed after a miss is found on the kept login PATH, with no new shell.
    • One assertion in the existing "concurrent callers" test now expects a kind put back to be found at once. That's the intended change.
  • bun run check fast is green on the head (0e5ab4d).
  • scripts/agent-entry-points-demo-regression.ts, rewritten for V6, passes at 1280 and 390, dark and light, on the demo transport:
    • the picker row, then the tiles of the missing agents;
    • Install asks the PC, and the demo's refusal shows on the tile and in the line;
    • Back puts the focus back on the picker;
    • Settings shows its installed agents with versions, the tiles and no Sign in;
    • Open setup guide opens the V6 guide;
    • New worktree's row;
    • a device that turns watching loses all of it, and a watching device never gets it.
  • scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts passes without the old Setup guide page.
  • Reviews:
    • omo-native-code-reviewer: CLEAR / APPROVE. It raised one MEDIUM, that an installed agent could be missing from the picker; fixed in the server as above.
    • Codex Terra 6.1, rounds 1 to 14: no HIGH or MEDIUM left. Its MEDIUMs are fixed:
      • a stale agent read overwriting the newer one;
      • Settings hiding install errors;
      • a just-installed OmO or Gajae Code hidden by the locator's 60 s kept miss (reproduced).

Left as LOW:

  • The palette's "Setup guide" entry is still searchable on a remote PC's page or a watching device, where it lands on the page without the row.
  • Tapping the ring to watch the install closes the dialog, so the new agent isn't picked by itself.
  • A failed Check again in Settings replaces every tile, including one whose install is running.
  • AgentSetupCard is unused since feat(setup): a first-run setup guide on a fresh install #2332. It stays for the in-browser sign-in PR.

…pen the setup guide

Rebuilds #2330 on the V6 setup guide (#2332). The guide's agent tile moves
into AgentTile (move only, class names kept) and is shared:

- New workspace, New tab and New worktree: the agent picker ends with "Add
another agent…", which shows the agents the PC lacks and a picker can
start as tiles; Install is the one tap, the ring turns until the PC lists
the agent, then the dialog picks it. No setup card, no sign-in step.
- Settings → Agent integrations: "Open setup guide" at its top (this PC
only), then the PC's installed agents with versions and the ones it can
  install as the same tiles.
- A watching device gets none of it.

GET /api/agents now also asks the install catalog's PATH lookup (service,
then login shell) when the service PATH misses, and the shell-agent locator
looks a missed kind up again on its kept login PATH, so an agent a tile just
installed is offered by the picker (no contract change). A creation
dialog's agent list applies only its latest read (latestRead).

Builds on #2330: its picker row, add panel, Settings list and regression.

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved detection of agents installed outside the app’s usual search path.
    • Watching devices no longer show agent installation or setup-guide actions.

The pull request adds agent installation entry points to workspace and worktree creation dialogs and Settings. It shares installation UI with the setup guide, expands installed-agent discovery, and adds regression coverage for these flows and watch-mode behavior.

Changes: Agent installation and discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent catalog and installed-state discovery
server/agents-routes.ts, server/index.ts, server/shell-agent.ts, src/lib/agentList.ts, related tests
The agents route can check catalog binaries, and ShellAgentLocator retains and rechecks the login-shell PATH. Catalog helpers group agent rows and filter installable agents supported by the picker.
Shared agent installation panel and tile
src/components/AddAgentPanel.*, src/components/AgentTile.*, src/components/SetupGuide.*, src/lib/i18n/*
AddAgentPanel fetches the catalog and presents addable agents through the shared AgentTile. The setup guide now imports that tile. Installation status, styles, and setup translations are updated.
Agent picker and creation-dialog flows
src/components/AgentPicker.*, src/components/NewSessionDialog.tsx, src/components/WorktreeDialog.tsx, src/components/Sidebar.tsx, src/App.tsx, src/lib/latestRead.*, src/lib/i18n/workspace.*
The picker gains an Add another agent row. Creation dialogs open the install panel, refresh the agent list after installation, and select the agent when available. The dialogs also handle stale reads, focus return, pane navigation, and watch mode.
Settings agent catalog and setup-guide access
src/components/AgentCatalogSettings.*, src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/lib/i18n/settings.*, src/lib/i18n/paletteSettings.ts, related tests
Settings displays installed and installable agents and adds an Open setup guide action. Install controls and the guide action are hidden in watch mode. Settings search labels and regression checks are updated.
Entry-point regression and documentation
scripts/agent-entry-points-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, docs/development.md, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/*
A browser regression script checks the flows across viewport sizes, themes, and watch-mode transitions. CI runs it, and the documentation describes the entry points.

Exercise a successful install in both creation dialogs.

The new regression always receives HTTP 409 from the demo installer, so it never reaches AgentTile's successful-install callback. Add a successful demo install case and assert that both NewSessionDialog and WorktreeDialog close the add panel, refresh the agent list, and select the newly installed agent. Without these assertions, a regression in that flow can pass because the current test covers only refusal handling.

…pening the guide changes no setting

The merge pass reproduced two MEDIUMs on #2413:

- An installer that adds a new folder to the login PATH left the agent
unpickable for up to 60 s. GET /api/agents now offers an agent only when
a PATH has it; a hit in the agent's installer folder has the login PATH
read again (installed-lookup.ts): at once for a new install, then at most
every 30 s while it still misses. Reads during a refresh wait for it, and
refreshes coalesce (catalogLocator and ShellAgentLocator queue one after
any read already out). After Add another agent… installs one, the dialog
waits with its fields off and reads again every 10 s from each read's
start, at most 70 s, each read's outcome taken once (latestRead.ts
readAgainUntil), so a slow, failed or stalled read never locks it and a
late answer never overrides the user.
- Reopening the guide from Settings turned a switched-off plan usage back
on. A reopened guide is marked (kept across a reload) and changes no
  setting, nor says it will.

Both MEDIUMs from the merge pass's review of 73dd12b are fixed in 0e5ab4d. Each has tests that fail first.

  1. An installer adding a new PATH folder left the agent unpickable for up to 60 s.
    • GET /api/agents now offers an agent only when a PATH has it. A hit in its installer folder has the login PATH read again: at once for a new install, then at most every 30 s while it still misses (server/installed-lookup.ts). Reads during a refresh wait for it, and refreshes coalesce.
    • The dialog now waits after an install and reads again every 10 s from each read's start, at most 70 s. Each read's outcome is taken once, so a slow, failed or stalled read never locks it and a late answer never overrides the user's pick.
    • A file found only in an installer folder that no PATH has is not offered. herdr starts the kind from the pane's shell, which wouldn't find it.
  2. Reopening the guide from Settings flipped a saved showUsage=false to true. A reopened guide now carries a mark that survives a reload. It never turns plan usage on and doesn't say it will. Only a first run does.

Reviews of this round:

  • omo-native-code-reviewer: APPROVE (on gpt-6.1-sol; the Anthropic models were rate-limited). It also found a HIGH, fixed here: the new hooks were below NewSessionDialog's if (!open) return null. A mounted closed→open→closed test now covers it.
  • Codex Terra 6.1: no HIGH or MEDIUM after 14 rounds.

bun run check fast is green (8979 pass).

Known LOW: a guide reopened from Settings under the old build and left open across the upgrade has no mark, so it can still turn usage on once.

…heck, and reads no real home

The shell-agent locator now looks a kind its last login-shell run missed up
again on the PATH that run read, so one put back is found at once, with no
new run (as a just-installed agent is); the contract test expected the old
"kept miss until the next run". Its server also read this PC's real
~/.local/bin through the default catalog detector: it now gets a detector
rooted in the test's own home.

Merging 8e16b3c (onboarding 4 of 4, replaces #2330; the maintainer delegated the per-PR look check and judges the final build on main before the release). People who already use Ovis can add an agent and reopen the guide: an 'Add another agent…' row ends the agent picker in New workspace, New tab and New worktree and shows the agents the dialog's PC lacks as the guide's tiles, installed in place on one tap (on that PC); Settings > Agent integrations lists installed agents with versions, the missing ones as install tiles, and 'Open setup guide'. The guide's AgentTile moves out of SetupGuide.tsx unchanged and is shared. GET /api/agents also uses the catalog's login-shell PATH lookup (no contract change). Full review by the merge pass, then a delta round: install only on the user's explicit tap and on the dialog's PC; auth, origin, catalog-command and concurrency gates kept; timers and listeners clean up. Two MEDIUMs were reproduced and fixed: an agent whose installer adds a new PATH directory stayed unpickable for up to 60 s (the dialog now refreshes after an install, bounded, and picked it in about 0.4 s), and reopening the guide from Settings turned a saved 'show usage' off back on (now kept). 86 tests and typecheck pass; the browser entry-points regression is kept. The API contract changes on purpose: a shell agent missed on the login PATH is now found at once when it appears on the PATH that run read (as a just-installed agent does), still with no new login shell; hits are kept until the next run. The contract test says so and now uses a test home, never the real one.

Settings → **Subscription usage** and Settings → **Agent integrations**
become one page, **Settings → Agents**, as the owner picked from the
design demo (agents-settings-demo). Part 1 of 2 for 0.4.21; in-browser
sign-in follows on top of this.

## Change

- **One row per agent on the PC** (catalog order, `GET
/api/agent-catalog`): mark, name, version, and one state line read from
the plan-usage accounts: *Signed in · account*, *N accounts · M need
attention*, *Not signed in*, or just *Installed* where Ovis reads no
sign-in for that agent (OmO, pi, Hermes…). Nothing is guessed.
- While shut, a row offers its one missing step: **Sign in again** for
its one expired account, or **Sign in** when it has no account. Sign in
opens the existing Add account dialog already on that provider (new
`provider` preset on `UsageAccountDialog`).
- Opened, it shows the agent's accounts, with each account's glance
limit, the existing move/hide controls and Sign in again (#2309), plus
**Add account**. It also shows herdr's **Session resume** for it
(integration state, command and Copy).
- An account goes under the one installed agent whose `sign_in.provider`
it is (`src/lib/agentsPage.ts`). Everything else goes under **Other
accounts** with the hub card and the global Add account: Cursor, an
agent not on this PC, and every account while a remote PC is shown,
because accounts are read on the server's PC.
- herdr integrations no row shows: **Other agents herdr found**, then
**Not found on this PC**, each with its install command.
- **Install another agent (N)**: the setup guide's tiles (#2413), shut
until opened. **New agents**: the launch modes, always shown. **Plan
limits** closes the page: Show plan limits, then Meters show and Limit
shown on one row, then Claude's status-line switch.
- **Open setup guide** stays at the top: this PC only, never on a
watching device. A watching device also gets no Install, Sign in, Add
account or hub Edit/Remove.
- **Move, not duplicate.** `UsageSettings.tsx` and
`AgentCatalogSettings.tsx` are gone, and their code lives in
`AgentsSettings.tsx`. Old addresses and history entries naming `usage`
or `integrations` open Agents (`currentSettingsPage` in
`lib/deepLink.ts`), keeping their `section` (`accounts-<provider>`,
`guide`, `launch-modes`). The palette finds Agents by either old name,
and new palette groups exist for Plan limits and Other accounts.
- Docs and copy: docs/guide.md, DESIGN.md, the setup guide's "open this
again" line, and ja/ko/zh translations.

Design reference: the Codex app's settings list one row per connected
thing, shut until opened, and Zed lists each agent with its own settings
the same way. The rows follow the owner-approved mockup; launch modes
moved out of the rows into one always-shown group after review, so they
never depend on the catalog answering.

## Validation

- `bun run check fast`: green (9070 unit tests pass; typecheck, build,
generated types/themes).
- Fail-first unit tests: `src/lib/agentsPage.test.ts` (provider → agent
mapping, Other accounts, a remote PC, installable, integrations) and
`src/lib/deepLink.test.ts` (old `?settings=usage|integrations` land on
`agents` with their section). Both failed before the change.
- Browser regressions on the demo build, run locally, all pass:
`settings-pages-demo-regression` (every page fits 390/320 px in
en/ko/ja/zh; Agents rows, groups, Copy; a move in Codex's row keeps
Claude's place in the meters' order),
`agent-entry-points-demo-regression`, `cliproxy-settings-regression`.
`usage-regression` is updated for the page; it runs in the Integration
lane, not locally.
- The move-order assertion was seen failing with the bug put back
(`Claude keeps the first place: codex:demo-codex-home,
codex:demo-codex-work`), then passing.
- Screenshots: 1280/390 × dark/light, with the old `?settings=usage`
link landing on Agents.
- Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Terra 6.1 (fast, xhigh).
Both MEDIUM sets are fixed:
  - Moving an account in an agent row reordered other providers' meters.
  - Integration rows and launch modes vanished when the catalog failed.
  - Not-installed agents' integration commands were gone.
  - A watcher could reach hub Edit.
  - A late usage read showed "Not signed in".
  - `aria-controls` pointed at nothing while a row was shut.
  - The focus ring was hidden.

## Known limits (LOW, not fixed here)

- A link to `section=accounts-<provider>` can land before the catalog
and usage have loaded, and then focus stays on the tab. The old page had
the same race.
- Rows appear once the catalog answers, so Other accounts can move down
as it loads.

No server code changes; `shared/agent-catalog.ts` only changes a
comment.
