Change

Fixes #1649. On Linux with fcitx4 and Sogou Pinyin (no in-app preedit), picking a Chinese candidate with a number key in the terminal sent the digit and lost the candidate. Space worked.

A plain textarea in Chrome 155 traced the events for de + 2:

keyup d / e (the IME consumes the pinyin keys)
keydown key='2' keyCode=50 (not 229, isComposing false)
keypress charCode=22320 ('地')
input insertText '地'
keyup key='2'

Stock xterm sends a printable digit from keydown, then ignores that keypress and input as already handled. It sends Space from keypress, which is why Space worked.

The 5.5.0 patch now leaves a plain digit (no Ctrl, Alt or Meta) on Linux to its keypress and input, as Space already is:

  • A typed digit still arrives, from its keypress.
  • A picked single character arrives from the keypress charCode.
  • A picked word, which has no keypress, arrives from the input.

This is a smaller step than xterm.js PR #6037 for #6036: that PR defers every digit and Space on Linux for up to 50 ms. No code is adapted from it.

Validation

  • scripts/terminal-linux-ime-regression.ts (new, also called from scripts/ui-regression.ts) replays the recorded trace through the app's terminal and asserts the WS input frames. It covers a digit pick, a Space pick, a word pick (assumed shape: no keypress), two picks in a row, plain 12a0 and Ctrl+C. It passes with the patch. Without the patch it fails on the first case (2 instead of 地).
  • Physical check: Ubuntu 20.04 (X11), Chrome 155.0.8059.79, fcitx4 + Sogou Pinyin, a build of this branch on a local server. Digit picks in a shell pane typed 的地的地, with no digits.
  • bun run typecheck passes. bun test scripts/pages-gate.test.ts passes.
  • bun run test:unit: the same 24 failures as unmodified main on this machine (git 2.25 has no git init -b, proxy and bridge environment). One timing test, a token set: guessing it > counts guesses that arrive together, failed once and then passed 3 of 3 runs alone.
  • I did not run the full bun run test:ui.

The description includes the required Change and Validation sections. It explains the Linux IME problem, the resulting behavior, regression coverage, physical validation, passed checks, known baseline failures, and the test suite that was not run.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1649 requires Linux direct terminal input to deliver an IME candidate selected with a plain number key instead of the number. The patch defers plain Linux digit keydown handling to keypress and input, and permits the input event when the digit is awaiting those events. The regression script covers single-character picks, word picks without keypress, consecutive picks, Space, plain digits, and Ctrl+C. The script is also connected to the UI regression flow. The reported trace replay and physical check support the requested behavior.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Keep each deferred send within its completed composition.

compositionend() queues a timer that captures only start. If compositionstart() runs before that timer, it resets _compositionPosition at the same textarea offset. The callback then falls back to textarea.value.length and can send the new composition's provisional text. _sliceUnsent() advances _sentUpTo, so the later correction skips that text.

Looks good to merge. Checked the patched Terminal.ts paths:

  • A plain digit on Linux now goes out on keypress, as Space already did, so ordinary typing still sends one digit.
  • IME composition (keyCode 229) returns before the new branch, so Mozc, ibus-hangul and fcitx5 behave as before.
  • The flag is cleared at the start of keydown and on keyup, so a keydown the app's custom key handler cancels leaves it unset.
  • No path sends one insertText twice.
  • The new replay runs in the ui-regression lane.

Optional nits, none blocking:

  • Add && !this.optionsService.rawOptions.screenReaderMode to the digit branch so screen readers still announce digits. This matters mainly if this goes upstream.
  • Clear _digitAwaitsKeyPress on blur and in reset() as well.
  • Browser.isLinux also matches ChromeOS and Android. Mention in docs/terminal-input.md that only X11 Chrome was traced.
  • Label the "word" replay as an assumed shape, since no real IME trace recorded it.

CodeRabbit's compositionend timer finding is about older code in the patch, not this change. We'll track it separately.

…ut of the pane (#1850)

## What it does
Dictation into the terminal in Safari (Mac, iPad and iPhone) now types
the corrected phrase once. Before, it either lost the phrase or typed
every draft of it ("thi", "this", "this is", ...) ahead of the final
one. Several related input paths are now safe too:
- A SwiftKey re-composition of a word already sent no longer types the
word twice.
- With the key bar's Ctrl held, a Korean syllable still being typed in
Safari is typed before the chord or key-bar key. Before, the chord took
its place and the syllable was lost.
- Text dictated where it may not go stays out of the pane. A phrase
dictated while the pane is view-only is not typed later. One dictated
while the pane is not ready waits in the held input until you send or
discard it. A pane switch mid-dictation drops it.

## Why
Safari reports dictation as `insertReplacementText` edits that replace
the previous guess in place, with no composition events. Stock xterm
sent each edit as it came. The xterm 5.5.0 patch now treats a dictation
replacement at the caret like the Safari Hangul preedit it already
handles: the text waits in the editor, and the next key, paste or blur
sends it once. The patch also exposes `finishComposition()`. The
terminal (`useTerminalMount`, `useTypedKeys`) calls it to send pending
text as text before a held-modifier chord, a navigation key or a key-bar
key. It also calls it while a refused context still refuses the text:
before the role returns to interact, and into the held draft when
readiness returns.

This branch was written before `PaneTerminal.tsx` was split into hooks.
It is rebased onto current main, with its `PaneTerminal` edits moved
into `src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts` and `src/lib/useTypedKeys.ts`
unchanged in substance. In the xterm patch, main's `oscStringState`
addition and this branch's `finishComposition` now sit side by side.

Design precedent: native macOS terminals (Terminal.app and iTerm2) keep
provisional input as marked text and send only the inserted result to
the shell. Dictation and a pending Hangul syllable work the same way
here. The DESIGN.md entry under the terminal input notes names the same
precedent.

The replay sequences adapt Agent of Empires' tests (MIT, credited in
THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md). They are synthetic event replays in headless
Chrome, not a native keyboard.

### Relation to #1654
#1654 (Linux IME digit candidate) edits the same file,
`patches/@XTerm%2Fxterm@5.5.0.patch`, but a different code path: the
keydown handling of plain digits on Linux in `Terminal.ts`. This PR
changes `CompositionHelper.ts` (Safari replacement preedit) and adds the
public `finishComposition()`. Neither fix depends on the other.
Whichever merges second needs a rebase of the patch file, plus hunk
offsets regenerated with `bun patch`. The behaviours should not
conflict.

## How it was verified
- `scripts/terminal-safari-ime-regression.ts` and
`scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts` (both called from
`scripts/ui-regression.ts`) gain cases for dictation (with and without
Safari's keydown 229), SwiftKey re-compositions, and the refused
contexts (role lost mid-syllable, pane not ready with Send and with
Discard, held key-bar Ctrl chord, pane switch mid-dictation). Each case
asserts the exact WS input frames. Run through `bun run check run`
against an isolated herdr after `bun run build`:
  - iPad/iPhone replay: PASS on MacIntel, iPad and iPhone platforms.
- Safari replay: PASS (14 named cases, among them every new dictation,
SwiftKey and refused-context case).
- `scripts/ui-regression.ts`: PASS (72 suites, including both replays
above).
- The new Safari dictation case fails at the original base (nothing
sent), and both refused-dictation cases failed before the second
commit's fix. That was recorded on the original branch. Rerun here: this
branch's Safari replay, run against origin/main's code without the fix,
fails on the first dictation case (`dictation replacement commits one
corrected phrase`: the pane received nothing, `\x07` instead of `This is
a test.\x07`).
- Liveness probe (from the merge pass review): a probe refuses input
until its pong and can end between two one-second readiness polls. Text
entering the editor while input is refused now marks the refusal, so the
pong commits it to the held draft. A new Safari replay case holds the
page's ping, dictates, then releases the ping. The phrase and the next
key wait in the draft until Send. Without the fix, the case fails,
because they reach the pane (`"This is a test.a"`). With the fix it
passes.
- `bun run check fast` passed: typecheck, build, and 6380 unit tests
with 0 failures.
- Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer approved, with no HIGH findings. One
porting slip it found (a missing hook dependency) is fixed. Codex
(gpt-6-astra) found no HIGH findings.

Known limitations, unchanged from the original design and left for a
follow-up:
- If the pane's readiness comes back in the middle of a dictated phrase,
the part dictated so far goes to the held draft. Safari's later
corrections of that text are then lost.
- The held-draft step only covers Safari's replacement preedit. A Gboard
or Chrome composition that ends after readiness returns is not held in
the draft.

… the digit

With fcitx4 and Sogou Pinyin on Linux (no in-app preedit), picking a
candidate with a number key in the terminal sent the digit and lost the
candidate. Space worked.

Chrome gives the picking key its own key and keyCode in keydown (not
229), then a keypress whose charCode is the candidate and an insertText
input. Stock xterm sends a printable digit from keydown and then ignores
that keypress and input as already handled. It sends Space from
keypress, which is why Space worked.

- The 5.5.0 patch leaves a plain digit on Linux to its keypress and
input, as Space already is. A typed digit still comes from keypress.
- scripts/terminal-linux-ime-regression.ts replays the recorded Chrome
trace. It fails without the patch and runs in the UI regression.
- docs/terminal-input.md records the trace and xterm.js #6036 / #6037.

Ported this PR onto main's current xterm patch and pushed the result as 8fe590af8.

  • Main's 9d80e8e04 patch rewrite keeps Safari dictation/replacement composition in CompositionHelper.ts; this PR's Linux digit-candidate fix remains in the independent Terminal.ts keydown/input path.
  • Added the screen-reader guard and clear the deferred-digit flag on blur, reset and keyup so it cannot leak into a later event.
  • Replaced polling in the browser replay with exact WebSocket events.

Verification:

  • Current-main production with this PR's replay fails as expected: '2\x07' !== '地\x07'.
  • Rebased branch replay passes: PASS Linux IME trace replay: digit and Space candidate picks, word picks, plain digits.
  • bun install --frozen-lockfile reapplies the regenerated xterm patch cleanly.
  • bun run check fast: exit 0; 6,716 passed, 0 failed, 13 skipped. Typecheck and build passed.
  • Main advanced during the one permitted push to 718f0e087; that commit touches only the Mac app/install files, does not overlap this PR, and GitHub reports the pushed head mergeable.

Review prepared with a code-review agent and checked against the code. The merge decision stays with the maintainer's merge pass.

Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED. This is an outside-contributor PR, and the maintainer approved merging it in this pass. The ext-pr-review lane verified it, resolved the xterm patch conflict and added two commits; its comment is above.

Lane Verdict
Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) APPROVE
Code review (omo-native-code-reviewer) PASS

On Linux, picking a candidate in the IME with a digit key now sends the chosen character instead of the digit.

  • The xterm patch re-applies cleanly with bun install --frozen-lockfile.
  • Keys that are still composing never reach the new branch, so composing text in other languages is unaffected.
  • Ctrl, Alt and Meta digits, and screen-reader mode, are excluded. So are macOS and Windows.
  • The replay test fails at terminal-linux-ime-regression.ts:82 with the fix disabled. It waits on exact WebSocket events, with no fixed sleeps.

MEDIUM follow-up: xterm's Linux check reads navigator.platform, which also matches ChromeOS and Android. Hardware-keyboard digits there now take the new path. They send the same characters, so nothing visible changes, but a note in docs/terminal-input.md would cover it.

CodeRabbit did not review this PR (rate-limited or skipped). The reviews above stand in for it.

) (#2335)

## Change

Closes #1617. Targets 0.4.20 (the owner moved it in from 0.4.21). This
upgrades xterm.js from 5.5.0 to 6.0.0, so a terminal draws only whole
frames: xterm 6 honours synchronized output (DEC mode 2026,
xtermjs/xterm.js#5453). Ovis's xterm source patch is ported to 6.0.0. It
follows #2331 (merged), whose regression script measured the problem;
this PR makes that script assert zero half-drawn frames.

**Why:** herdr sends every frame it draws inside `CSI ? 2026 h` … `l`,
and large frames reach the browser split over several WebSocket frames.
xterm 5.5 ignored the brackets and painted whatever it had parsed so
far: the top half of the new frame over the bottom half of the old one.
The owner saw this while agents stream, most of all with Korean text.

| `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts`, real pane, 162x53 |
renders | mixed (two frames at once) | drawn inside an open block |
|---|---|---|---|
| xterm 5.5.0 (main), 3 runs | 128 / 108 / 110 | **46 / 26 / 28** | 46 /
26 / 28 |
| xterm 6.0.0 (this PR), 3 runs | 82 / 82 / 82 | **0 / 0 / 0** | 0 / 0 /
0 |

In every run, all 62 of herdr's blocks reached the browser intact, and
59-62 of them were split over WebSocket frames. 6.0 also renders fewer
times (82 against 108-128), because it skips the intermediate paints.

## What changed

- **Pins:**
- `@xterm/xterm` 6.0.0, `@xterm/addon-fit` 0.11.0 (was `^0.10.0`) and
`@xterm/addon-web-links` 0.12.0 (was 0.11.0). All three were released
with 6.0.0 on 2025-12-22.
- `@xterm/addon-unicode-graphemes` 0.4.0 is unchanged; it was already
the 6.0 release.
- **The patch** (`patches/@XTerm%2Fxterm@6.0.0.patch`, which replaces
the 5.5.0 one):
- The same 12 files, moved to 6.0's layout: `browser/Terminal.ts` is now
`CoreBrowserTerminal.ts`, the `Types.d.ts` files are `Types.ts`, and 6.0
uses VS Code's lifecycle names (`_register`, `addDisposableListener`,
`Emitter`).
  - 3 of 34 hunks needed hand-porting:
    - **Textarea blur:** ported to the new listener.
- **`_finalizeComposition`:** ours replaces 6.0's. 6.0's only change
there was its duplicate-input fix (#5024), slicing to a new
composition's start, and our send already does that.
- **DPR monitor disposal:** dropped, because 6.0 already registers it.
- The key, keypress, keyup, input, paste, blur and focus handlers the
patch touches are unchanged in 6.0 apart from one
`scrollToBottom(true)`, so the IME paths are carried over as they were:
- Safari/WebKit Hangul preedit, including the iOS app's WKWebView gate
(#2307).
- Dictation, the Gboard Backspace reset, the Linux digit candidate
(#1654), the long-composition view (#2031) and #938/#1327.
    - Paste order, input reset, textarea placement and `oscStringState`.
- **New hunk, `CoreMouseService.ts`:** keeps one wheel report per row of
a trackpad's travel, as 5.5 counted it. 6.0 scales a pixel delta under
50 px by 0.3, which made scrolling a mouse-reporting program, herdr's
history included, 3.3 times slower on a trackpad.
- **New hunk, `Keyboard.ts`:** keeps Alt/Option+Left/Right as 5.5 sent
them (`ESC b`/`ESC f` on a Mac, Ctrl's sequence elsewhere). 6.0 dropped
that mapping (#5346), and docs/terminal-input.md promises Option+arrow
moves by word.
- **Building xterm's source:** `scripts/build-xterm.ts` and the Vite
aliases resolve 6.0's `vs/*` sources and its `vs/nls` stub, and use
xterm's own `useUnknownInCatchVariables: false` for them. The browser
scripts that bundle xterm with `Bun.build`
(`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`, `chat-history-browser-qa.ts`) now
share one plugin, `xtermSourcePlugin`, with the same resolution.
`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` had resolved only `browser/` and
`common/`, through a second `plugins` key; the lane caught it.
- **Tests:**
- `scripts/terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`: 5.5 threw "dimensions" from
a terminal disposed at once, and 6.0 does not, so both modes now assert
no error.
- `scripts/xterm-parser-state.test.ts` pins 6.0.0. The parser fields and
states the OSC accessor reads are unchanged, and that test checks them.
- `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts` now asserts 0 mixed
renders and 0 renders drawn inside an open block.
- **Docs and comments:** updated where the version mattered.
`THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md` adds Microsoft's copyright for the `vs/base`
code 6.0 bundles (MIT).

## 6.0 changes checked against Ovis

- **#5263** (the helper textarea is read-only while `disableStdin`):
Ovis sets `disableStdin` only where input is dropped anyway (observing,
held, ended, unsupported). Drafts come from `onData`, which never fires
then. A phone keyboard no longer opens on such a pane, which matches "an
observer never types".
- **#5096** (new viewport and scrollbar): we keep `scrollback: 0`, and
fit 0.11 reserves no scrollbar width at `scrollback: 0`. Our
`::-webkit-scrollbar` rule is now inert.
- **#5462** (removed options): Ovis uses none of them. `_oscLinkService`
(the OSC 8 lookup in `terminalFold.ts`) still exists.
- **Mode 2026 left open:** every new stream resets xterm first, so mode
2026 never carries over. A pane switch calls `term.reset()`, and an
attach or watch writes `ESC c` in stream order. The cached-tab path is
bounded by xterm's 1 s safety timeout. A late joiner gets the last 2026
switch from `ReplayBuffer`.
- **xtermjs/xterm.js#5801** (ED2 inside a 2026 block moves the
viewport): this cannot happen here. I checked it with a real Claude Code
2.1.311 answer in Korean, plus a resize, on this branch. Across 238
blocks only one `ESC [2J` reached the browser, herdr's own first draw,
because herdr re-renders the pane rather than passing Claude Code's
erases on. xterm's viewport never had anything to scroll: its scroll
range and scroll position stayed 0 on every render, since we keep
`scrollback: 0`. The settled screen matched herdr's `pane.read` row for
row, 14 Hangul rows included.
- modifyOtherKeys: still not supported by 6.0, so `PaneTerminal` keeps
sending Ctrl+Enter itself, as before.

## Evidence

- `bun run check fast`: green on this head (8,566 unit tests pass, 0
fail).
- **The browser lane** (IME, paste, OSC 52 replay, late join and every
terminal script): CI's browser regression jobs run it on this head. A
full local run is under way, and its result will follow in a comment.
- Earlier local runs caught two problems, both fixed here:
`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` could not resolve 6.0's `vs/` sources,
and `ui-contexts` failed on the usage-row race.
- On this head, `terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`,
`chat-history-browser-qa.ts`, `terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`,
`omo-question-wheel-regression.ts`, `ui-regression.ts` and
`ui-contexts-regression.ts` pass locally.
- **Changelog:** `changelog.d/xterm-6-whole-frames.md`.
- **Device checks with native input**, main (`4485f4d6`, xterm 5.5)
against this branch (`e3c33e32`). The later commits change only the
wheel factor, tests and comments.

  | Surface | Typed | main | this branch |
  |---|---|---|---|
| Mac Safari 27.0.1, Korean 2-set, native HID keys (test Mac) | `abc` 한글
Space 안녕하세요 Return, then 한 Backspace Return | exact, 30 bytes | exact,
30 bytes |
| Mac Safari, Option+Left / Option+Right | | `ESC b` `ESC f` | `ESC b`
`ESC f` |
| iOS 27 simulator Safari, on-screen Korean keyboard (WebDriverAgent
taps) | ㅇㅏㄴㄴㅕㅇ Space, 한 Backspace, Return, slow and unpaced | exact, 22
bytes | exact, 22 bytes |
| Ovis iOS app (Debug build, WKWebView without a Safari token, #2307) |
same | exact, 22 bytes | exact, 22 bytes |
| Windows 11 VM, Chromium 153, Microsoft Korean IME through `SendInput`
| 한 Backspace Return | `하\r` | `하\r` |
| same | `abc` 한글 Space 안녕하세요 Return | identical bytes on both, with one
extra DEL after Return on both (the test driver timed out at the same
Return, so it may be the driver; not from this change) | same |

Faster native typing than about one key per 0.75 s could not be driven
reliably on the simulator.
- **Windows CI steps in the VM** (`windows-install.test.ps1`, preflight,
frozen install, build, the Windows test set,
`windows-terminal-browser-qa.ts`): 7 of 7 pass on both main and this
branch (45 tests pass, 1 skipped).

## Reviews

- **omo-native-code-reviewer:** APPROVE; no CRITICAL or HIGH.
- **M1, fixed:** 6.0's trackpad scaling. The patch now keeps one report
per row, and `omo-question-wheel-regression.ts` gained a case that sends
12 untrusted pixel wheels of 0.55 rows and expects 6 reports; with 6.0's
scaling it gets 2.
- **Fixed LOWs:** an Alt+ArrowLeft assertion in
`terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`, so the kept mapping cannot
silently drop again; and three comments.
  - **Not changed:**
- **L1:** the read-only textarea is checked by reasoning; the device
runs above typed only on panes that take input.
- **L2:** a stream that stops inside a block now shows its half frame
after xterm's 1 s timeout instead of at once. Every pane switch, attach
and watch resets the terminal first, so this applies only to a cached
tab's re-attach.
- **Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, fast, xhigh):** APPROVE on the upgrade, with no
findings at any severity. It compared every hunk; typecheck passed, and
2,571 targeted tests pass.
- **Codex on the follow-ups** (the wheel hunk, the shared plugin, the
test changes): REQUEST CHANGES, both fixed, then APPROVE with no
findings.
- **MEDIUM:** the Alt+ArrowLeft expectation now follows the page's
platform (`ESC b` on a Mac), as xterm decides.
- **LOW:** the dispose test again proves the deferral defers. With both
modes now expecting no errors, the deferred case asserts the terminal is
still alive after xterm's queued frames, and disposed only after the
following task.
- Codex checked that removing the Alt mapping, or disposing immediately,
after the frame only, or not at all, makes those tests fail.
- **CodeRabbit on #2331:** one nitpick. The harness should compare acked
flow identities, not only counts. Done here.

## Also in this PR

- `test(usage): …`: `checkUsageSignInAgain` (from #2309) counted
Settings' account rows right after opening the page, before `/api/usage`
had drawn them. It failed in 2 of 3 browser-lane runs on this branch and
passed once on main. It now waits for the rows.
- The browser lane's `ui-regression.ts` fails when TMPDIR is under
`$HOME`, because the folder picker shows the path as `~/…`. This is a
test assumption, not touched here; the lane was run with TMPDIR under
`/tmp`.
