fix(terminal): compose Hangul from an iPad hardware keyboard instead of sending each jamo - #938
Conversation
…of sending each jamo iPadOS Safari with a hardware keyboard (Magic Keyboard) reports each Hangul jamo as a printable keydown with its own keyCode (not 229) and then composes in the editor with deleteContentBackward + insertText, with no composition events. xterm sent the key on keydown and cancelled it, so the editor never composed and every jamo reached the PTY on its own (한 as ㅎㅏㄴ). Such a key is now left to the editor, and the existing Safari replacement path takes its insertion as a preedit, committed by the next other key, paste or blur. That path also accepts a two-syllable replacement (망 + ㅏ puts back 마아) and iPadOS's "iPad" platform as well as "MacIntel". scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts replays the recorded iPad order; it fails on the previous xterm patch at the first Hangul keydown and passes with this one. The macOS Safari replay still passes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… give it On Apple fonts the rows draw a two-cell glyph enlarged (glyphFit, up to 1.2x) so Hangul fills its cells. An IME's pending text is not a row: xterm draws it in its composition view at the plain font size, so the syllable being typed looked smaller than every one before it until it was committed (iPad, Magic Keyboard). adjustTerminalGlyphs now watches the composition view and gives it the row's fit: the spacing comes from xterm's own measure of the glyph (its WidthCache element), as the row's does, since a canvas measures Hangul differently on macOS WebKit. Checked on macOS WebKit and Chrome: the pending syllable's size equals the committed one's (14.45px both in WebKit; 13px both in Chrome, which needs no fit); the iPad and Safari IME replays still pass. …1325) ## Summary Holding the iOS keyboard's ⌫ in a terminal pane (direct typing) deleted one character and stopped (#862). Root cause, isolated in the iOS 27.0 simulator with plain textareas: the iOS keyboard repeats a held ⌫ only while the focused field **has text**, and not at all when the field has **`white-space: nowrap`**. Cancelling the keydown (as xterm does), opacity 0, a tiny size, z-index under the canvas or an opaque element over the field made no difference. xterm's helper textarea fails both conditions: typed keys are sent on keydown and cancelled (so nothing lands in it), xterm empties it after Backspace/Enter/^C/blur, and xterm.css gives it `nowrap`. Fix (iPhone and iPad only, `src/lib/deleteRepeat.ts` + `PaneTerminal.tsx`): keep one space in an otherwise empty helper textarea, refilled from capturing `focus`/`keydown`/`input` listeners registered after xterm's own (a bubbling listener never runs: xterm stops propagation in the capture phase at the target), and set the textarea to `pre-wrap`. xterm still sends each ⌫ as DEL and cancels its edit, so the space is never deleted and never reaches the pane; compositions start after it (`compositionstart` uses the field's length), and a field that already holds text is never touched. Design reference: this is a WebKit input-field workaround, not a pattern copied from another app. Native iOS terminals (Blink, Termius, a-Shell) implement `UIKeyInput` themselves, so the question does not arise for them; stock xterm.js in iOS Safari has the same defect. ## Verification - iOS 27.0 simulator (iPhone 18 Pro), Safari, on-screen keyboard driven with AXe touch down/up, owned raw-mode PTY capture in an isolated herdr test session: - 3 s hold of ⌫: **1 DEL before, 24 DELs after** (English keyboard); Korean keyboard after the fix: 18 DELs in 2 s. - Typed text, Space, double Space and Enter reach the PTY unchanged (`h i ␠ ␠ z \r`), no stray space. - Korean typing is unchanged by this PR (see below). - The input line was already fine (a plain field: a held ⌫ empties it locally). - `scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts` gains two steps: outside iOS the helper textarea stays empty and `nowrap`; under an iPhone user agent it keeps one space before the caret and `pre-wrap` through Backspace, typing and Enter, and only the typed keys (`DEL DEL DEL a b \r`) reach the pane. Fails on main, passes here. Chromium cannot repeat an iOS key, so the repeat itself was measured only in the simulator. - `scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts` (the #938 iPad hardware-keyboard Hangul replay) passes unchanged, and also with `maxTouchPoints` forced to 5 so the space is active (run ad hoc, not committed). - `src/lib/deleteRepeat.test.ts`; `bun run check fast` passes. ## Limits / please review - Measured only in the iOS 27.0 simulator; the reporter used Chrome on iOS 27 (same WebKit, the CriOS user agent hits the same branch). Chrome for iOS could not be installed in the simulator. - The iPad **hardware-keyboard** Hangul path is covered by the recorded replay only: with `pre-wrap`, text the editor leaves in the one-cell-wide field wraps instead of overflowing; I did not exercise that on a real iPad. - The issue's "(or any key)": on the iOS soft keyboard only ⌫ auto-repeats; the key bar's keys repeat since #965. - Separate finding, not changed here: on main, the iPhone soft Korean keyboard in direct typing sends each jamo separately (`ㅎㅏㄴㄱㅡㄹ` for 한글). iOS sends keydown key=jamo keyCode 0, then deleteContentBackward + insertText with no composition events; the #938 replacement path in the xterm patch is gated to iPad/Mac Safari, so iPhone is excluded. A plain textarea composes 한글 correctly. Worth its own issue. Fixes #862 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tead of sending each jamo (#1327) ## Summary In direct typing (the default on phones since #1163), an iPhone's on-screen Korean keyboard sent each jamo to the pane on its own: 한글 arrived as `ㅎㅏㄴㄱㅡㄹ`, and after English as `abcㅎㅏㄴㄱㅡㄹ`. Found while testing #432 on WebKit. #432 itself is macOS Safari; this is the iPhone counterpart of the same family (Hangul breaking in the terminal on Apple WebKit), so this PR is `Refs #432`, not a fix for it. Root cause, from events logged in a plain textarea on the same keyboard: the iPhone keyboard sends each jamo as a `keydown` with `keyCode` 0 and the jamo as `key`, then edits the field with `deleteContentBackward` + `insertText` and **no composition events**. That is the sequence the iPad hardware keyboard sends, which #938 handles in the xterm patch (`CompositionHelper.passHangulKey` / `beforeinput`), but that path was gated to `isMac || isIpad`. On an iPhone, xterm sent the jamo on keydown and cancelled the editor's edit. The fix adds `isIphone` (xterm's own `navigator.platform === 'iPhone'`) to both gates. Nothing else in the patch changes. Design reference: the editor-composes, terminal-commits-on-next-key model is the one #938 already uses for iPadOS; no new mechanism. ## Verification - iOS 27.0 simulator (iPhone 18 Pro), Safari, on-screen Korean 2-set keyboard tapped with AXe, owned raw-mode PTY in an isolated herdr test session. Bytes received by the PTY: | Typed | main | this PR | | --- | --- | --- | | 한글 Space | `ㅎ ㅏ ㄴ ㄱ ㅡ ㄹ ␠` | `한 글 ␠` | | abc, switch to 한국어, 한글 Space | `a b c ㅎ ㅏ ㄴ ㄱ ㅡ ㄹ ␠` | `a b c 한 글␠` | | 한 ⌫ Space | | `하␠` | | 한 ⌫⌫⌫⌫ Space | | `DEL ␠` (three edit the syllable, the fourth deletes in the pane) | | ㄱㅏㅂㅅㅏ Space (final consonant moves on) | | `갑사 ␠` | | 한 Enter | | `한\r` | | 한 Space, then hold ⌫ 3 s | | `한 ␠` + 23 DEL (with #1325) | - `scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts` now also replays the trace under an iPhone user agent and `navigator.platform = "iPhone"` with `keyCode` 0 (in its own context, so #1325's kept space is active too). Without the patch change it fails with `actual: "abcㅎㅏㄴ"`; with it, MacIntel, iPad and iPhone pass. - Patch regenerated with `bun patch --commit` (the stray `.bun-tag` entry it adds was removed) and checked with a clean `bun install --frozen-lockfile`. - `bun run check fast` passes. ## Limits - Simulator only; Chrome for iOS (same WebKit, `CriOS` user agent, which xterm's `isSafari` accepts) could not be installed in it. - The iPad simulator's on-screen keyboard already composed correctly (`abc한글 `), and its hardware-keyboard path is untouched. - #432 (macOS Safari, physical Korean IME) could not be driven natively from this setup: synthetic keystrokes need an Accessibility grant and safaridriver needs remote automation enabled (admin), neither available over SSH. So #432 stays open. Refs #432 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… say Safari (#2302) (#2307) Closes #2302 ## Problem In the Ovis iOS app, Korean typed in the terminal with the iPhone's on-screen 2-set keyboard reached the pane one jamo at a time: `안녕` arrived as `ㅇㅏㄴㄴㅕㅇ`. The maintainer saw it in a Letta pane as broken, partly repeated text. ## Cause The xterm patch only composes Hangul from this keyboard (`CompositionHelper.passHangulKey` / `beforeinput`, from #938 and #1327) when xterm's `isSafari` is true, and `isSafari` looks for `Safari` in the user agent. The app's WKWebView reports `… AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/15E148`, with no `Version/` and no `Safari/`, so the composing path stayed off. Each jamo then went out on its keypress while iOS was still composing the syllable in the field. The Mac app already appends `Safari/…` to its user agent (`app/mac/Sources/OvisMac/WebPage.swift`); the iOS app does not. ## Fix Both gates now use `isAppleWebKit`: a Mac, iPad or iPhone page that is Safari, or that reports `AppleWebKit/` and is not Chrome or Android. Nothing changes in the apps themselves, so installed iOS apps get the fix with the PC's Ovis update. This follows how Safari already behaves; no other app's design is involved. ## Evidence Recorded on eamac's iOS 27.0 simulator (iPhone 18 Pro) against an isolated test herdr session with `scripts/terminal-ime-diagnostic.ts`. WebDriverAgent tapped ㅇ ㅏ ㄴ ㄴ ㅕ ㅇ Space on the on-screen Korean keyboard; the bytes below are what reached the owned raw-mode PTY. | Surface | Before (main) | After (this branch) | |---|---|---| | Safari tab | `안녕 ` | (unchanged path) | | Home Screen web app | `안녕 ` | (unchanged path) | | Ovis iOS app (Debug build of main) | `ㅇㅏㄴㄴㅕㅇ ` | `안녕 `, typed slowly and fast | With the fix, the iOS app also sends `하 ` (Backspace inside 한), `한\x1b` (the key bar's Esc after a syllable), `글\r` (Return) and `ab ` (English). The DOM event sequence is the same in all three surfaces; only the user agent differs. - `scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts` now also runs under the app's recorded user agent ("iPhone app"). Before the fix it failed with `'ㅎㅏㄴ\x07' !== '한\x07'`; after it passes, with every earlier case (iPad, MacIntel, iPhone Safari: dictation, SwiftKey, key bar, blur, pane switch). - `terminal-safari-ime-regression.ts`, `terminal-composition-regression.ts` and `terminal-linux-ime-regression.ts` pass. - `bun run check fast`: workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck, build, unit tests (8398 pass, 0 fail). ## Scope and limits - Android and Chrome on a Mac, Linux or Windows are excluded by the same test (`chrome|android`), so their paths do not change. I did not run an Android device in this lane. - On a Mac, WebKit web views that leave `Safari` out of their user agent now take Safari's Hangul path too, which matches the editor they run on. - The changelog entry is in `changelog.d/ios-app-hangul-composition.md`. ## Reviews - Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh: APPROVE, no findings. It ran 593 handler-level assertions across 19 user agent and platform pairs: desktop Chromium, Electron, Firefox and Android keep their old behaviour, and the recorded app sequence sends `안녕 `. Its sandbox could not start Chromium, so it ran no browser itself; the replay runs above cover that. - omo-native-code-reviewer: APPROVE, no CRITICAL, HIGH or MEDIUM. It put the old Safari-only check back and saw the new case fail (`'ㅎㅏㄴ\x07' !== '한\x07'`), then saw it pass with the fix. LOW findings, left as they are: - The check reads `navigator.userAgent` in `CompositionHelper` rather than in `common/Platform.ts`. Under Node the platform is `node`, so nothing changes there. - A Mac Electron app whose user agent drops the Chrome token now enters the path. Chromium's Korean input sends `keyCode` 229 with `isComposing`, and both gates already return early for that, so its bytes do not change (traced in the code, not run). - No replay case covers a Mac WebKit web view without `Safari` in its user agent. The Ovis Mac app adds `Safari/` itself. - The docs sentence that claimed too much was fixed in this PR.
) (#2335) ## Change Closes #1617. Targets 0.4.20 (the owner moved it in from 0.4.21). This upgrades xterm.js from 5.5.0 to 6.0.0, so a terminal draws only whole frames: xterm 6 honours synchronized output (DEC mode 2026, xtermjs/xterm.js#5453). Ovis's xterm source patch is ported to 6.0.0. It follows #2331 (merged), whose regression script measured the problem; this PR makes that script assert zero half-drawn frames. **Why:** herdr sends every frame it draws inside `CSI ? 2026 h` … `l`, and large frames reach the browser split over several WebSocket frames. xterm 5.5 ignored the brackets and painted whatever it had parsed so far: the top half of the new frame over the bottom half of the old one. The owner saw this while agents stream, most of all with Korean text. | `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts`, real pane, 162x53 | renders | mixed (two frames at once) | drawn inside an open block | |---|---|---|---| | xterm 5.5.0 (main), 3 runs | 128 / 108 / 110 | **46 / 26 / 28** | 46 / 26 / 28 | | xterm 6.0.0 (this PR), 3 runs | 82 / 82 / 82 | **0 / 0 / 0** | 0 / 0 / 0 | In every run, all 62 of herdr's blocks reached the browser intact, and 59-62 of them were split over WebSocket frames. 6.0 also renders fewer times (82 against 108-128), because it skips the intermediate paints. ## What changed - **Pins:** - `@xterm/xterm` 6.0.0, `@xterm/addon-fit` 0.11.0 (was `^0.10.0`) and `@xterm/addon-web-links` 0.12.0 (was 0.11.0). All three were released with 6.0.0 on 2025-12-22. - `@xterm/addon-unicode-graphemes` 0.4.0 is unchanged; it was already the 6.0 release. - **The patch** (`patches/@XTerm%2Fxterm@6.0.0.patch`, which replaces the 5.5.0 one): - The same 12 files, moved to 6.0's layout: `browser/Terminal.ts` is now `CoreBrowserTerminal.ts`, the `Types.d.ts` files are `Types.ts`, and 6.0 uses VS Code's lifecycle names (`_register`, `addDisposableListener`, `Emitter`). - 3 of 34 hunks needed hand-porting: - **Textarea blur:** ported to the new listener. - **`_finalizeComposition`:** ours replaces 6.0's. 6.0's only change there was its duplicate-input fix (#5024), slicing to a new composition's start, and our send already does that. - **DPR monitor disposal:** dropped, because 6.0 already registers it. - The key, keypress, keyup, input, paste, blur and focus handlers the patch touches are unchanged in 6.0 apart from one `scrollToBottom(true)`, so the IME paths are carried over as they were: - Safari/WebKit Hangul preedit, including the iOS app's WKWebView gate (#2307). - Dictation, the Gboard Backspace reset, the Linux digit candidate (#1654), the long-composition view (#2031) and #938/#1327. - Paste order, input reset, textarea placement and `oscStringState`. - **New hunk, `CoreMouseService.ts`:** keeps one wheel report per row of a trackpad's travel, as 5.5 counted it. 6.0 scales a pixel delta under 50 px by 0.3, which made scrolling a mouse-reporting program, herdr's history included, 3.3 times slower on a trackpad. - **New hunk, `Keyboard.ts`:** keeps Alt/Option+Left/Right as 5.5 sent them (`ESC b`/`ESC f` on a Mac, Ctrl's sequence elsewhere). 6.0 dropped that mapping (#5346), and docs/terminal-input.md promises Option+arrow moves by word. - **Building xterm's source:** `scripts/build-xterm.ts` and the Vite aliases resolve 6.0's `vs/*` sources and its `vs/nls` stub, and use xterm's own `useUnknownInCatchVariables: false` for them. The browser scripts that bundle xterm with `Bun.build` (`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`, `chat-history-browser-qa.ts`) now share one plugin, `xtermSourcePlugin`, with the same resolution. `terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` had resolved only `browser/` and `common/`, through a second `plugins` key; the lane caught it. - **Tests:** - `scripts/terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`: 5.5 threw "dimensions" from a terminal disposed at once, and 6.0 does not, so both modes now assert no error. - `scripts/xterm-parser-state.test.ts` pins 6.0.0. The parser fields and states the OSC accessor reads are unchanged, and that test checks them. - `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts` now asserts 0 mixed renders and 0 renders drawn inside an open block. - **Docs and comments:** updated where the version mattered. `THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md` adds Microsoft's copyright for the `vs/base` code 6.0 bundles (MIT). ## 6.0 changes checked against Ovis - **#5263** (the helper textarea is read-only while `disableStdin`): Ovis sets `disableStdin` only where input is dropped anyway (observing, held, ended, unsupported). Drafts come from `onData`, which never fires then. A phone keyboard no longer opens on such a pane, which matches "an observer never types". - **#5096** (new viewport and scrollbar): we keep `scrollback: 0`, and fit 0.11 reserves no scrollbar width at `scrollback: 0`. Our `::-webkit-scrollbar` rule is now inert. - **#5462** (removed options): Ovis uses none of them. `_oscLinkService` (the OSC 8 lookup in `terminalFold.ts`) still exists. - **Mode 2026 left open:** every new stream resets xterm first, so mode 2026 never carries over. A pane switch calls `term.reset()`, and an attach or watch writes `ESC c` in stream order. The cached-tab path is bounded by xterm's 1 s safety timeout. A late joiner gets the last 2026 switch from `ReplayBuffer`. - **xtermjs/xterm.js#5801** (ED2 inside a 2026 block moves the viewport): this cannot happen here. I checked it with a real Claude Code 2.1.311 answer in Korean, plus a resize, on this branch. Across 238 blocks only one `ESC [2J` reached the browser, herdr's own first draw, because herdr re-renders the pane rather than passing Claude Code's erases on. xterm's viewport never had anything to scroll: its scroll range and scroll position stayed 0 on every render, since we keep `scrollback: 0`. The settled screen matched herdr's `pane.read` row for row, 14 Hangul rows included. - modifyOtherKeys: still not supported by 6.0, so `PaneTerminal` keeps sending Ctrl+Enter itself, as before. ## Evidence - `bun run check fast`: green on this head (8,566 unit tests pass, 0 fail). - **The browser lane** (IME, paste, OSC 52 replay, late join and every terminal script): CI's browser regression jobs run it on this head. A full local run is under way, and its result will follow in a comment. - Earlier local runs caught two problems, both fixed here: `terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` could not resolve 6.0's `vs/` sources, and `ui-contexts` failed on the usage-row race. - On this head, `terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`, `chat-history-browser-qa.ts`, `terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`, `omo-question-wheel-regression.ts`, `ui-regression.ts` and `ui-contexts-regression.ts` pass locally. - **Changelog:** `changelog.d/xterm-6-whole-frames.md`. - **Device checks with native input**, main (`4485f4d6`, xterm 5.5) against this branch (`e3c33e32`). The later commits change only the wheel factor, tests and comments. | Surface | Typed | main | this branch | |---|---|---|---| | Mac Safari 27.0.1, Korean 2-set, native HID keys (test Mac) | `abc` 한글 Space 안녕하세요 Return, then 한 Backspace Return | exact, 30 bytes | exact, 30 bytes | | Mac Safari, Option+Left / Option+Right | | `ESC b` `ESC f` | `ESC b` `ESC f` | | iOS 27 simulator Safari, on-screen Korean keyboard (WebDriverAgent taps) | ㅇㅏㄴㄴㅕㅇ Space, 한 Backspace, Return, slow and unpaced | exact, 22 bytes | exact, 22 bytes | | Ovis iOS app (Debug build, WKWebView without a Safari token, #2307) | same | exact, 22 bytes | exact, 22 bytes | | Windows 11 VM, Chromium 153, Microsoft Korean IME through `SendInput` | 한 Backspace Return | `하\r` | `하\r` | | same | `abc` 한글 Space 안녕하세요 Return | identical bytes on both, with one extra DEL after Return on both (the test driver timed out at the same Return, so it may be the driver; not from this change) | same | Faster native typing than about one key per 0.75 s could not be driven reliably on the simulator. - **Windows CI steps in the VM** (`windows-install.test.ps1`, preflight, frozen install, build, the Windows test set, `windows-terminal-browser-qa.ts`): 7 of 7 pass on both main and this branch (45 tests pass, 1 skipped). ## Reviews - **omo-native-code-reviewer:** APPROVE; no CRITICAL or HIGH. - **M1, fixed:** 6.0's trackpad scaling. The patch now keeps one report per row, and `omo-question-wheel-regression.ts` gained a case that sends 12 untrusted pixel wheels of 0.55 rows and expects 6 reports; with 6.0's scaling it gets 2. - **Fixed LOWs:** an Alt+ArrowLeft assertion in `terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`, so the kept mapping cannot silently drop again; and three comments. - **Not changed:** - **L1:** the read-only textarea is checked by reasoning; the device runs above typed only on panes that take input. - **L2:** a stream that stops inside a block now shows its half frame after xterm's 1 s timeout instead of at once. Every pane switch, attach and watch resets the terminal first, so this applies only to a cached tab's re-attach. - **Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, fast, xhigh):** APPROVE on the upgrade, with no findings at any severity. It compared every hunk; typecheck passed, and 2,571 targeted tests pass. - **Codex on the follow-ups** (the wheel hunk, the shared plugin, the test changes): REQUEST CHANGES, both fixed, then APPROVE with no findings. - **MEDIUM:** the Alt+ArrowLeft expectation now follows the page's platform (`ESC b` on a Mac), as xterm decides. - **LOW:** the dispose test again proves the deferral defers. With both modes now expecting no errors, the deferred case asserts the terminal is still alive after xterm's queued frames, and disposed only after the following task. - Codex checked that removing the Alt mapping, or disposing immediately, after the frame only, or not at all, makes those tests fail. - **CodeRabbit on #2331:** one nitpick. The harness should compare acked flow identities, not only counts. Done here. ## Also in this PR - `test(usage): …`: `checkUsageSignInAgain` (from #2309) counted Settings' account rows right after opening the page, before `/api/usage` had drawn them. It failed in 2 of 3 browser-lane runs on this branch and passed once on main. It now waits for the rows. - The browser lane's `ui-regression.ts` fails when TMPDIR is under `$HOME`, because the folder picker shows the path as `~/…`. This is a test assumption, not touched here; the lane was run with TMPDIR under `/tmp`.
Change
On an iPad with a hardware keyboard (Magic Keyboard), Korean typed in the terminal reached the PTY one jamo at a time: 한 arrived as ㅎㅏㄴ. Typing in Chat, or in an ordinary text field, was fine.
I recorded the native event order with
scripts/terminal-ime-diagnostic.tson the iPad (iPadOS Safari 27.2 in its default desktop mode, sonavigator.platformisMacIntel). It is different from both the macOS Safari path in #524 and ordinary composition:keydownwith its own keyCode, not 229 (key: "ㅎ",keyCode: 71,isComposing: false), followed by akeypress.insertText. A changed one isdeleteContentBackwardand theninsertTextof the whole result (ㅎ → 하 → 한). There are no composition events.xterm sends a single-character
keyon keydown and cancels the event (thekeyCode >= 48 && key.length === 1branch ofevaluateKeyboardEvent). The editor never gets to compose, so every jamo is sent on its own. This change leaves such a key to the editor:
CompositionHelper.passHangulKey()matches Safari on macOS or iPad, a Hangul jamo or syllablekey, keyCode other than 229, no modifiers, and no screen reader mode. For such a key,Terminal._keyDownreturns without sending or cancelling it, and marks the keydown handled sokeypressdoesn't send it either.insertTextthen starts the existing Safari replacement preedit from fix(terminal): preserve Safari Hangul replacement input #524. That path already commits the syllable once, on the next other key, a paste, a blur or a pane reset. It now also accepts:iPadplatform as well asMacIntel.English, shortcuts, Enter, Backspace and the macOS Safari path are unchanged.
The pending syllable's size (second commit)
With composing working, the syllable being typed looked smaller than the ones before it. On Apple fonts
terminalGlyphs.ts(#272) draws a Hangul glyph in the rows up to 1.2x larger so it fills its two cells. The pending syllable is not in a row: xterm draws it in its composition view at the plain font size. On the iPad it measured 16 device px tall against 20 for the committed ones.adjustTerminalGlyphsnow watches the composition view and gives it the fit its row will give it: the sameglyphFit, with the spacing taken from xterm's own measure of the glyph (itsWidthCacheelement), as the row's is. A canvas measures Hangul differently on macOS WebKit (11.2px against xterm's 13px at 13px), so the canvas alone gave the view 15.6px instead of the row's 14.45px.Validation
New replay:
scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts(also run fromui-regression.ts) replays the recorded iPad order fornavigator.platformMacIntelandiPad. It covers:English then Hangul, with no jamo sent while composing
a two-syllable replacement
commit before Enter, Ctrl+C and Tab
commit on blur
no leak into another pane on a pane switch
the pending syllable drawn at the size of a committed one
It fails on
mainat the first Hangul keydown (the keydown is cancelled) and passes with this change. Run on macOS 27 with Chrome and with Playwright's WebKit. Without the second commit it fails in WebKit at the size check (13px against 14.452889px). In Chrome the rows need no fit for Hangul, so both are 13px there.Existing replay:

That issue is the macOS Safari English-to-Korean transition and stays separate; this is the iPad hardware-keyboard path next to it.
Thank you for #524. Its replacement path made this a small change. I'm happy to adjust the key check or the test shape if you would rather keep the iPad case separate.
