Summary

A LazyCodex role that inherits its model (no root model pin) but pins model_reasoning_effort could not change or clear that effort. On the omo tab the row's model draft is empty, so picking Inherit effort or another level never enabled Save, and PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} required a model anyway. The only way out was to pin a model the user did not want. This resolves the open Codex review finding on #6960 (r4243110906).

The PUT contract is now explicit:

model effort Role file omo.jsonc [codex].agents.<role>
string omitted model set, effort kept (unchanged) model set, reasoning kept
string level / null model set, effort set / removed (unchanged) model set, reasoning set / removed
omitted level model pin untouched (an inherited role stays inherited), effort set model untouched, reasoning set; an absent entry gets { "reasoning": ... }
omitted null model pin untouched, effort removed model untouched, reasoning removed; no entry is created
omitted omitted 400 empty_update, neither file read untouched
null / non-string / empty any 400 invalid_model (a save never removes a model pin) untouched

The response echoes model only when the request sent one, as it already did for effort. LazyCodex declares both model and reasoning optional in its agent schema, so a reasoning-only entry is valid there.

In the dashboard, a row without a model pin enables Save as soon as its effort changes and sends { "effort": ... } alone. The omo.jsonc mirror retry also works for those rows, including a null clear, through pending or failed reloads, and a later model pick or Auto-assign Apply still carries the outstanding effort. The Current column shows the effort next to No model pin. The success notice reuses the existing string with that label, so no locale keys were added. The commented-omo.jsonc notice no longer tells users to set [codex].agents.{role}.model by hand, because for an effort-only save that would add a pin. It now names [codex].agents.{role} in all 11 locales.

Existing clients are unchanged: a model-only PUT, Auto-assign Apply (model plus optional effort), and ocx agent roles set all still send a model.

English docs (guides/integrations.md), structure/subagents.md, and structure/clients/integrations.md (edited in place, still 599/600 lines) describe the new contract. Translated guides are handled separately.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck passed. cd gui && bun x tsc -b passed. bun run lint:gui passed. bun run structure:check passed. bun run privacy:scan passed.
  • Focused tests: bun test tests/server/codex-agent-role-routes.test.ts tests/routing/codex-agent-role-models.test.ts tests/clients/omo-role-models.test.ts tests/server/codex-role-auto-assign-routes.test.ts tests/cli/cli-headless-parity.test.ts gave 174 pass / 0 fail. cd gui && bun test --isolate tests/lazycodex-role-models.test.tsx tests/lazycodex-role-auto-assign.test.tsx gave 38 pass / 0 fail. cd gui && bun test --isolate tests/i18n-locales.test.ts tests/locale-parity.test.ts tests/integrations-surfaces.test.tsx gave 79 pass / 0 fail.
  • The 10 new GUI tests fail on the previous component and pass on the new one. The 28 existing GUI tests pass on both.
  • Changed-file selection: bun test --isolate --changed=8eb1fc3de3 (the origin/dev merge base, run directly from the repo root with the preload sandbox) gave 8142 pass / 32 skip / 0 fail across 356 files. I ran it directly because bun run test:changed sat queued behind other worktrees' full-suite runs holding the user test lock. The full bun run test was not run locally for the same reason, so that coverage is left to CI.
  • End-to-end: on an isolated OPENCODEX_HOME/CODEX_HOME/HOME and a separate port, PUT {"effort":"low"} on a model-inheriting role wrote only model_reasoning_effort to the role file and { "reasoning": "low" } to omo.jsonc. The dashboard flow in the screenshot did the same.

…inning a model

A LazyCodex role with no root model pin but a pinned model_reasoning_effort could not
change or clear that effort: the dashboard Save needed a non-empty model draft and
PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} required a model.

PUT now treats model as optional. An omitted model leaves the role file's pin (or its
absence) and the omo.jsonc model untouched; an omitted effort keeps the effort; a null
effort clears it. A null model stays 400 invalid_model and a body with neither key is
400 empty_update. The omo.jsonc mirror changes only reasoning for an effort-only save
and creates an absent entry only to hold one. The dashboard enables Save for an effort
change on a row without a pin, sends {effort} alone, keeps the mirror retry for set and
clear, and shows the effort next to the No model pin label. The commented-omo.jsonc
notice no longer tells users to set .model by hand.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Codex role updates now allow reasoning effort to change without a model value. The API and role-file writers preserve model pins or inheritance when model is omitted. The GUI supports effort-only saves and retains effort across mirror retries. Documentation and tests cover these changes.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md dev-only path; actor @lidge-jun, admin), merged as a0191a1; head a7b00ac695 bound with --match-head-commit, no unresolved threads (CodeRabbit r4245538492 folded). Exact-head CI: all four test shards, catalog async contracts on three OSes, typecheck/gates, structure, storage, docker, npm-global, keyring, docs build and enforce-target passed. Author verification: bun test --changed 8,142 pass / 32 skip / 0 fail, typecheck, gui tsc -b, lint:gui, structure:check, privacy:scan 0; independent GPT-6.1-Sol high review PASS (builder Claude). Translated guides follow in #6976, which also narrows the English omo.jsonc sentence (an entry is created only when a LazyCodex-supported level is stored).

Mirror #6975's English role-models text in the fr, ja, ko, ru, tr, zh-cn
and zh-tw guides: a row without a model pin can save an effort alone,
omitting model keeps the role-file pin and the omo.jsonc model, a missing
omo.jsonc entry gets reasoning only when a supported level is stored, a
null model is refused with 400 invalid_model, an empty update with 400
empty_update, and ocx agent roles set always takes a model.

#6975's English said a role without an omo.jsonc entry always gets one
holding only reasoning. writeOmoRoleModel only creates it when a level
LazyCodex supports is saved (none is written as off); for such a role a
clear or ultra adds no entry. The translations already say this.

… guides (#6976)

Documents the effort-only role save from #6975 in the fr, ja, ko, ru, tr, zh-cn and zh-tw integrations guides: a row without a model pin can save an effort on its own, omitting model keeps the pins, a null model is refused with 400 invalid_model and an empty update with 400 empty_update, and ocx agent roles set always takes a model.

The English guide's omo.jsonc sentence is narrowed to match writeOmoRoleModel: a role without an omo.jsonc entry gets a reasoning-only entry only when a LazyCodex-supported effort is saved, and for such a role a clear or ultra adds no entry.
