Part of #1133 — AI-3159

What & why

The app attaches to its daemon by name, so a daemon installed under another profile can keep serving another server. Home then said "Not connected to the server. Sign in again to reconnect." and offered Sign in, which cannot move the daemon. It now says which server the daemon is running for, and the lifecycle controller compares the attached daemon's name, server and reported profile with the app's own resolution: an idle mismatch is offered the ordinary Replace, a busy one is reported until its agents finish, and under a KCAP_URL launch or with auto actions closed it is reported with the command that fixes it.

This is the attach identity check from the design; the Settings Switch flow follows separately.

Where to look

The expected identity is the graph's own resolution, never a re-read of active_profile, so an external selection change reports a mismatch rather than moving the daemon. A daemon that reports no profile is judged on name and server only.

Verification

Controller tests cover a server mismatch and a profile-only mismatch offered Replace, a busy daemon reported without an offer, the report-only cases, an older daemon reporting no profile, and a repeated attach not reporting twice. Home tests cover the new notice replacing the sign-in path.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Detects local daemons connected to a different server, profile, or app identity.
    • Shows clearer, host-specific mismatch notices and manual repair guidance.
    • Offers daemon replacement when safe; busy or unavailable daemons require manual repair.
    • Prevents misleading sign-in prompts when a daemon is connected elsewhere.
    • Defers replacement while agents are active and cancels pending replacement if new agents start.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevents repeated reporting of the same daemon mismatch.
    • Correctly accepts daemons whose reported identity matches the app configuration.

📝 Walkthrough

The app validates attached daemon server, profile, and name identity. It reports mismatches and offers or documents repair based on daemon state. The home view model detects local daemons serving another server and changes notices and sign-in visibility.

Changes: Attached daemon identity handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Identity validation and repair contracts
src/Capacitor.App/Services/AttachedIdentity.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/DaemonLifecycleControllerTests.cs
The app compares daemon server, profile, and name values. It generates platform-specific manual repair commands and tests URL comparison, matching identities, and shell-safe quoting.
Attached daemon lifecycle handling
src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/DaemonLifecycleControllerTests.cs
The lifecycle controller caches daemon identity, reports mismatches once, defers replacement while agents are active, cancels replacement when agents start, and rechecks deferred mismatches. Tests cover reconnects, busy agents, cancellation, manual repair, and harness server defaults.
Local foreign-server notice
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/HomeViewModel.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/HomeViewModelTests.cs
For local selections, the home view model detects a daemon serving another server, displays a specific notice, hides sign-in, and disables the start command. Tests cover connecting and connected states.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 71642

The identity check, repair prompts, and repair commands look sound. One known issue remains open: when the app is signed out, the home screen may hide the notice that the local daemon serves another server and show a sign-in action that does not help. A misplaced test comment also needs cleanup. Neither issue blocks merging, but the owner should confirm the home-screen behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 66e87

Replacement remains pinned to the app’s chosen identity and requires confirmation. However, a reconnect during repair preparation can separate that confirmation from the daemon identity that originally justified replacement. The potential impact is localized to the named daemon and its running work.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The identity-triggered repair does not preserve its original attach generation through asynchronous status queries and prompt preparation. A reconnect after the gated generation check can therefore leave an old mismatch authorizing a repair prompt for a different daemon incarnation. Confirmation only rejects transitions occurring after its own generation capture. User approval and pinned replacement identity limit the exposure, but unnecessary replacement can compromise failure containment for work on the newly attached daemon. This is newly reachable through automatic mismatch handling; the replacement executor itself predates the PR.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly evidenced mutation scope is the named local daemon under the app’s resolved profile and server. The relevant failure-containment exposure is replacement of that daemon and interruption of its work, rather than demonstrated remote or tenant-wide authority expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Reported daemon identity influences comparison and notices; replacement arguments instead use the app-resolved identity. Automatic execution passes structured arguments to the process runner. Manual instructions sanitize the service name and apply shell-specific quoting to profile values.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The production client publishes the initial snapshot before Connected, and the composition root starts the lifecycle controller before the client. These controls counter an initial stale-snapshot concern, but do not bind later asynchronous repair preparation to the original attach generation.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Share one identity state with Home
  • ➕ Keeps mismatch reporting and Home's notice based on one comparison.
  • ➖ Couples Home to lifecycle timing and complicates its local-versus-remote notice behavior.

Recommendation: Keep the separate checks: the controller needs name, server, profile, and agent activity to decide on replacement, while Home only needs a selection-aware server notice. Both use the existing server-identity comparison semantics.

Action required

1. Pending launches are offered replacement ✗ Dismissed
Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync decides whether the daemon is busy from ActiveAgents, which remains
zero while a launch is admitted or pending but has not appeared in the agents list. In that state
the controller offers Replace and its consent check also treats the daemon as idle, rather than
waiting for the launch to finish.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[840]

+            var busy     = daemon.ActiveAgents > 0;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Busy-state race findings are consistently accepted when pending work can bypass lifecycle safety
checks.

PR-#1655
PR-#1624

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
ActiveAgents counts only published starting or running agents, whereas the status payload supplies
a separate Busy observation that includes admitted and pending launches. The new offer,
idle-snapshot trigger, and consent recheck all use the narrower count.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The identity repair treats a daemon with an admitted or pending launch as idle because those launches are absent from `ActiveAgents`.

- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[595-600]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[834-861]
## Recommended Fix
Keep the latest full status snapshot and use its `Busy` value, with an appropriate compatibility fallback for older daemons, consistently for the initial offer, the idle transition, and the post-consent check. Add a test with `Busy == true` and `ActiveAgents == 0`.

2. New agents can be stopped by repair ✗ Dismissed
Description
ConfirmAndReplaceAsync checks the cached active-agent count only before entering the asynchronous
mutation lane. If an agent starts after that check, the ordinary verified-replace path has no
admission fence or second agent check and can stop its daemon.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[R595-599]

+        if (requireIdle && _latestActiveAgents > 0) {
+            _surface.Status("Agents started on the daemon while the prompt was open — canceled, nothing changed.");
+ // Offered again once they finish.
+            lock (_lock) _mismatchWaitsForIdle = true;
+            return;
Relevance

●●● Strong

A second admission check is needed after asynchronous gating; recent lifecycle precedent accepts
stale-state rechecks.

PR-#1363

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new guard precedes profile resolution and mutation dispatch. The replace ownership matrix clears
a loaded label without the active-agent fence used by the separate retire path.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[595-602]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/ServiceVerify.cs[1175-1200]

3. Identity repair can race another operation ✓ Resolved
Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync calls ConfirmAndReplaceAsync without acquiring the controller’s
operation gate, although that method acquires no gate itself. A Start action or startup decision can
therefore proceed while the identity prompt is open, and shutdown’s gate-based quiescence does not
wait for this replacement.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[R840-843]

+            _surface.Attention(mismatch);
+            var terminalPath = await _probe.TerminalPathAsync(_lifetime.Token).ConfigureAwait(false);
+            await ConfirmAndReplaceAsync(
+ new LifecyclePrompt(LifecyclePrompt.KindRepair, null, null, terminalPath is null, TakeoverDisclosure), _lifetime.Token)
Relevance

●●● Strong

The replacement mutation bypasses the controller gate, allowing concurrent lifecycle operations and
incomplete shutdown quiescence.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
StartActionAsync acquires _gate before its repair path, but the new caller does not.

4. Busy daemons never receive the promised offer ✓ Resolved
Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync records the mismatch before returning from its active-agents branch,
but it is triggered only by a Connected attach status. When those agents finish, snapshots do not
rerun the check, and even a later attach with the same identity is suppressed by the recorded
mismatch.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[R834-837]

+            if (daemon.ActiveAgents > 0) {
+                var agents = daemon.ActiveAgents == 1 ? "its running agent finishes" : $"its {daemon.ActiveAgents} running agents finish";
+                _surface.Attention($"{mismatch} The app offers to replace it once {agents}.");
+                return;
Relevance

●●● Strong

The promised post-agent replacement is not retriggered when snapshots update or active-agent counts
change.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The Connected handler is the only call site. Snapshot handling updates cached fields without
invoking the check, while the dedupe key contains only the identity-mismatch sentence, not agent
count.

5. Valid daemons are offered replacement ✗ Dismissed
Description
AttachedIdentity.Mismatch compares the daemon’s reported, sanitized service name with the app’s
unsanitized resolved name. A configured name such as My Laptop attaches through its sanitized
socket but is reported as a mismatch, so each fresh app session can offer to replace a correctly
installed daemon.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/AttachedIdentity.cs[R21-23]

+        if (!string.Equals(daemon.Name, expectedName, StringComparison.Ordinal)) {
+            actual.Add($"name {daemon.Name}");
+            expected.Add($"name {expectedName}");
Relevance

●●● Strong

Raw and sanitized daemon names can differ while referring to the same valid installed daemon.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
CreateResolved retains the raw resolved name; service installation sanitizes it and systemd passes
that service ID as --name. The daemon reports the resulting config.Name, while socket paths are
also sanitized, so attachment can succeed despite the raw-name comparison failing.

6. The repair command fails on Linux ✓ Resolved
Description
ManualRepair always includes --verify in the command offered when the app cannot replace the
daemon itself. On Linux, service installation explicitly rejects that flag before installing
anything, leaving users in the report-only path with a command that cannot perform the repair.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/AttachedIdentity.cs[R30-32]

+ public static string ManualRepair(string daemonName, string? profile) =>
+        $"To fix it, run `kcap daemon service install --replace --verify --name {daemonName} --profile {profile ?? "<profile>"}` "
+      + "in a shell where KCAP_URL is unset, then restart the app.";
Relevance

Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync starts a second check when it sees that _latestBusy has become false,

8. Attach comment narrates profile history ✓ Resolved
Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync explains the mismatch through a daemon installed under a profile that
was “since switched away from,” rather than describing only the current identity condition. This
change-history wording can become stale while the attach and repair logic remains active, misleading
maintainers about why the mismatch exists.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[R838-841]

+ /// The app attaches by daemon name, so the daemon behind it can be serving another server or profile,
+ /// typically one installed under a profile since switched away from. The expected identity is the
+ /// graph's own resolution, never a re-read of the active profile, so an external selection change

9. Override-launched apps stay mismatched ✗ Dismissed
Description
ManualRepair tells users to unset KCAP_URL only in the shell running the install command, then
restart the app. If the app is launched again with its KCAP_URL override, it still expects that
override's server, while the newly installed daemon resolves the chosen profile's server, so the
prescribed repair leaves the mismatch in place.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/AttachedIdentity.cs[59]

+        return $"To fix it, run {commands}{placeholder} in {(windows ? "PowerShell" : "a shell")} where KCAP_URL is unset, then restart the app.";
Relevance

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
KCAP_URL takes precedence over profile selection and produces a resolution with no profile name.

10. An unrelated warning can disappear ✓ Resolved
Description
withdrawLifecycleAttention checks the current attention value and publishes null in separate
operations. If the mutation-outcome consumer publishes a different attention message between them,
withdrawal erases that new message even though it did not come from the identity check.
Code

Evidence
The new callback reads lifecycleAttention.Value before calling OnNext(null). The same surface is
passed to the independent mutation-outcome consumer, whose outcome branches call Attention,
allowing another message to arrive between those operations.

11. Reconnecting shows a misleading sign-in ✓ Resolved
Description
The SignInVisible predicate excludes a foreign daemon only from its disconnected-availability
branch, not from its catch-up-timeout branch. If a previously identified foreign daemon stays in
Connecting for the catch-up interval, its retained snapshot still identifies the other server, but
the timeout shows the generic sign-in notice and button.
Code

PR-#929

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Foreign identity comes from snapshots, while the new sign-in guard covers only the final
alternative. A Connecting status selects the busy notice, whose timer converts it to the lost-server

12. Matching daemons keep a mismatch warning ✓ Resolved
Description
CheckAttachedIdentityAsync can reset _reportedMismatch to null after a detached, superseded
offer without clearing _identityReport, and its next check treats a matching identity as already
reported. If the app then reconnects to a matching daemon, the check returns before publishing null
and the main window restores the old warning.
Code

13. The tray keeps warning after a repair ✓ Resolved
Description
Report sends the mismatch to both _identityReport and lifecycle attention, but the
matching-identity branch clears only _identityReport. After a repair or reconnect resolves the
mismatch, the tray's retained lifecycle attention still puts it in the Attention state and displays
the old repair message until another attention message replaces it.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[R858-860]

+            if (mismatch is null) {

14. Daemon repair flags stay undocumented ✗ Dismissed
Description
The new manual-repair path exposes --replace, --verify, --name, and --profile commands, but

16. The mismatch banner is wiped as soon as it appears ✗ Dismissed
Description
OnAttachStatus calls CheckAttachedIdentityAsync synchronously on Connected. The profile resolver
is Task.FromResult and _latestDaemon is already set, so _surface.Attention(...) runs inside
the controller's Status callback, before MainWindowViewModel gets the same Connected.
MainWindowViewModel has its own status.Where(Connected).Subscribe(_ => StartMessage = null), and
both go through the main-thread dispatcher in that order. So for any live attach or reconnect, the
mismatch line and its repair command are posted to the launcher banner and then cleared right away.
The report-only cases (a KCAP_URL launch, auto actions closed, Linux) and the busy 'offers to
replace once agents finish' notice are left with no visible text in the main window. Only the tray
tooltip still shows it.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[215]

+        if (status.State == AttachState.Connected) _ = CheckAttachedIdentityAsync();
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedent flags lifecycle messages being overwritten or cleared by subsequent status
handling.

PR-#766
PR-#929

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The controller subscribes to service.Status before the main window does (App.axaml.cs runs
lifecycle.Start() before service.Start()), so the subject delivers Connected to it first. Its
check runs synchronously up to Attention because the resolver is `() =>
Task.FromResult(ValidProfileName(profile)). LifecycleSurface.Attention` calls
lifecycleAttention.OnNext directly. BindStartMessage posts that value to the main thread. Then
MainWindowViewModel's own observer receives Connected (also ObserveOn(MainThreadScheduler)) and
posts StartMessage = null after it. Other Connected-path attentions survive only because they come
after an async CLI status query.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
On a live Connected transition, `DaemonLifecycleController.CheckAttachedIdentityAsync` sends its `Attention` message synchronously from inside the Status callback. The main window's `status.Where(Connected).Subscribe(_ => StartMessage = null)` is posted to the main thread after it, so the mismatch banner and its repair command are erased.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[215-215]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[838-860]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/MainWindowViewModel.cs[555-557]

## Recommended Fix
Make sure the identity attention lands after the Connected clear. One option is to start the check with `_ = Task.Run(() => CheckAttachedIdentityAsync())`, or `await Task.Yield()` at the top of the method, so it runs after the status fan-out. A more robust option is to post the mismatch to the main thread after the clear, or keep the clear in MainWindowViewModel from erasing an identity attention emitted for the same attach. Add a test that wires a MainWindowViewModel to a controller and checks that the mismatch text survives a Connected transition.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Prioritize the foreign-server notice over expired sign-in for the local daemon.

If the attached daemon serves another server while the app lane is SignedOut, signInExpired makes NoticeFor return SignInExpiredNotice before this branch. Line 697 also shows Sign in because t.Expired bypasses t.Foreign. Signing in cannot change the daemon’s server. Show the mismatch notice and hide the local Sign in action for this combined state; retain the existing sign-in behavior for a remote selection.
