Closes #1761 — AI-4121

What & why

The desktop app's pack ID (KurrentCapacitor → kcap), bundle ID and Windows notification AUMID (io.kurrent.capacitor → io.kurrent.kcap) and the Linux .deb (kurrent-capacitor → kcap-desktop) move to the kcap names, and the release stops writing the Kurrent-Capacitor-* download aliases. These IDs are what an installed app updates and registers under, so they can only change while no installed copies exist — before the app is announced. With no legacy installs, the Kurrent Capacitor.app → kcap.app migration path goes too.

Where to look

  • Rollout: clear R2 desktop/*/ so the feed holds only kcap packages (a leftover baseline under another pack ID is now discarded, so packing is safe either way), release, then repoint kcap-web's /download/mac (today → Kurrent-Capacitor-osx-arm64.dmg) to kcap-osx-arm64.dmg.
  • Existing internal beta installs do not auto-update and the new DMG refuses to replace them; delete and reinstall.
  • The .deb is kcap-desktop rather than kcap so its /usr/bin link cannot shadow the CLI.

Verification

  • dotnet build Capacitor.slnx: 0 errors, 0 warnings.
  • scripts/{desktop-baseline,verify-desktop-immutables,install-windows-setup,promote-desktop-aliases}.test.sh: ok.
  • Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit: 3974 passed, 1 failed (UiScaleTests, local Norwegian decimal-comma locale, unrelated).
  • Not run locally: packed bundles and build-deb.test.sh (needs dpkg) — CI's desktop jobs are the first end-to-end check.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Desktop applications now use the kcap name across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
    • macOS installation updates preserve the app’s current Applications-folder location and provide clearer recovery and integration-refresh behavior.
    • Windows installs now use the per-user kcap directory.
    • Linux packages install as kcap-desktop.
  • Documentation

    • Updated upgrade and installation guidance for macOS and Windows.
    • Configuration, data, worktree, and branch-prefix locations remain unchanged.
  • Distribution

    • Release packages and installer aliases now use kcap naming; legacy aliases are no longer published.

Pack ID, bundle ID and notification ID move off the Capacitor names while no
installed copy exists to strand: each of them is what an installed app updates or
registers under, so changing one later would orphan every install.

📝 Walkthrough

The desktop app, package artifacts, installation paths, and CLI discovery now use the kcap identity. macOS installation planning no longer handles the former app name. Release workflows and tests use the updated identifiers and artifact names.

Change: Other

Suggested reviewers: nortonandreev, w1am, lougarou

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a7041

This change renames the desktop app identity to kcap across installation, packaging and CLI discovery. Internal beta installs under the old identity must be reinstalled by hand, as the PR states. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a7041

The inspected changes consistently adopt the kcap identity and retain existing installation and publication safeguards. No introduced security vulnerability was established. The remaining risk is the launch cutover: legacy installations require reinstall, and download routing and release-storage cleanup must be coordinated outside this repository.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change affects installed desktop copies and consumers of the shared platform release channels. Publishing remains under the existing release credentials; the inspected workflow change does not add credential authority. Distribution mistakes could affect a channel's users rather than only one local installation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Windows changes substitute fixed identity strings without changing the inspected input controls. Notification text remains XML-escaped and action tags are checked against pending actions. Single-instance ownership remains based on a normalized executable-path hash in the Local kernel-object namespace, with abandoned-owner recovery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A downloaded baseline with a non-kcap nuspec ID is discarded before packing, allowing a full-only release instead of an old-identity delta. Publication also retains fail-closed fetch handling and byte-equality checks for existing immutable objects. These controls do not establish that external redirects or stored legacy feeds have been cleaned up.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an explicit cutover checklist to verify release-storage cleanup, publication of the intended kcap installer, redirect alignment, and the reinstall path for any legacy beta users before announcing the release.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1761 requires the desktop identity rename, removal of legacy aliases, and removal of the legacy macOS migration path. The reviewed changes set the Velopack package ID to kcap, set the bundle ID and Windows notification AUMID to io.kurrent.kcap, publish only kcap aliases, and remove legacy Kurrent Capacitor.app detection and migration. The changes include focused packaging and unit-test updates. R2 cleanup and the external download redirect are rollout actions, not coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1761. Workflow, package, installation-path, application-identity, migration, documentation, and test updates support the desktop rebrand. The Debian package rename and baseline handling support consistent release identity and packaging. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Keep legacy installation identities
  • ➕ Existing beta installations could continue updating without a reinstall.
  • ➖ The public app would retain Capacitor-era package, bundle, and notification identifiers indefinitely.
2. Migrate beta installations explicitly
  • ➕ Beta users could retain a supported upgrade path to the new identity.
  • ➖ Cross-identity updates and platform registration would add substantial release and installer complexity.

Recommendation: Use the PR's coordinated identity change before launch. With no supported installed population to migrate, a beta reinstall is a smaller cost than retaining legacy identifiers or building a cross-identity migration. Clear the old R2 delta baselines before release and repoint the macOS download redirect after the new artifact is published.

Action required

1. Mac downloads serve stale builds ✗ Dismissed
Description
The release workflow promotes only kcap DMG aliases without clearing the old R2 desktop feeds,
while kcap-web’s /download/mac redirect still checks only Kurrent-Capacitor-* aliases. On the
first release under the new names, stale KurrentCapacitor feed metadata can remain available, and
visitors following desktop download links can receive an old build if an alias remains or a 404 if
neither does.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed workflow uploads the merged feed and copies only the new kcap aliases; it does not
clear the old R2 desktop feeds. The kcap-web Worker checks only the old aliases, and the signup tour
links to its /download/mac route. The release checklist calls for clearing the old feeds before
the first new-package-ID release and updating the public macOS redirect, but repository search found
no feed-clearing operation or kurrent.io/download/mac update.

## Issue description
The first `kcap` release can leave stale R2 desktop feed metadata in place while the public macOS download route still targets the old DMG aliases.

## Fix Focus Areas
- .github/workflows/release.yml[1023-1026]
- /cross_repos/kcap-web/src/server/downloads.ts[33-36]

## Recommended Fix
Add a pre-release operation, or a release gate enforced by the workflow, to clear `desktop/osx-arm64/` and `desktop/win-x64/` before the first `kcap` release. Update kcap-web’s macOS redirect to use the published `kcap-osx-arm64.dmg` artifact and coordinate its deployment with that release, or keep publishing the old aliases until the Worker has switched.

2. A missed feed cleanup breaks or corrupts the next release ✓ Resolved
Description
The pack ID changes to kcap, but the Fetch the delta baseline step and
scripts/desktop-baseline.sh still keep any *-full.nupkg in R2 without checking its nuspec
<id>. So unless someone first clears R2 desktop/osx-arm64/ and desktop/win-x64/ by hand, `vpk
pack --packId kcap gets a KurrentCapacitor` baseline. The only protection is a manual merge-order
step in the PR description; if it is missed, the next release fails at pack time or publishes a
delta against a different package ID into the live feed.

## Issue description
The delta baseline step accepts a full package from R2 without checking its package ID. After the rename to `kcap`, a leftover `KurrentCapacitor` package becomes the baseline unless R2 was cleared by hand.

## Fix Focus Areas

## Recommended Fix
Pass the expected pack ID to desktop-baseline.sh (or hard-code `kcap`). Read `<id>` from the nuspec, and if it does not match, delete the package and pack full-only (or fail with a clear error). Add a case to desktop-baseline.test.sh.

3. Beta users cannot reinstall from the new disk image ✗ Dismissed
Description
ReadVersion rejects earlier beta kcap.app bundles with CFBundleIdentifier
io.kurrent.capacitor, so Inspect classifies an existing /Applications/kcap.app as unverified
instead of a prior install. When a beta user opens the new DMG to reinstall, the existing-target
check blocks replacement with a message suggesting their own app is unrelated, while the Conflicts
path may instead offer ~/Applications and leave two copies.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationsMover.cs[R146-147]

+            return Value("CFBundleIdentifier") == "io.kurrent.kcap"
                ? Value("CFBundleVersion") ?? Value("CFBundleShortVersionString") : null;
Relevance

●● Moderate

Compatibility behavior conflicts with the stated no-legacy-install policy, but the reinstall path
makes the impact plausible.

PR-#1727

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Earlier beta releases packaged kcap.app with the io.kurrent.capacitor bundle ID, and the release
pipeline already used publish/kcap.app. The new identifier check makes ReadVersion return null
for that installed bundle; because the target exists, Inspect then returns Blocked. The PR
description also says beta installs will not auto-update and must be reinstalled, making this check
relevant to the stated upgrade path.

## Recommended Fix
When identifying an existing replacement target, accept a `kcap.app` with the old `io.kurrent.capacitor` bundle ID and a `kcap-desktop` executable, so the plan can be `Update` rather than `Blocked`. Continue requiring `io.kurrent.kcap` for the incoming bundle, and add a test covering replacement of a same-name beta bundle with the old ID. If replacing beta installs is not intended, instead give affected users a specific `Blocked` message telling them to delete the old copy and reinstall.
