Picture the viewer on the work-context requester row - #1900
A session with no work item shows a "This session" requester row in the work-context pane, and it drew a letter for any WorkOS user: the row could only build a picture from a github: id. The pane now asks /api/users/me/identity once per credential and uses the returned avatar_url when the requester is one of the viewer's ids, or when the launch names no requester (the daemon is the viewer's own). Anyone else keeps the github: fallback.
Needs kurrent-io/kcap-server#2644 to return the picture; against an older server the row keeps its letter, so the two can merge in either order.
Where to look
ServerWorkContextSource settles the viewer on any answer, a 404 included, and asks again only after a transport failure, a sign-out or an auth invalidation, so a server without the endpoint costs one request per credential.
Verification
Reader, client, source and view-model tests cover: the viewer read only when asked, a transport failure retried while a 404 settles, the identity asked once per credential and again after invalidation, and the requester row picking the viewer's picture for an own id, a merged github: id and no requester, but not for another user. dotnet publish -c Release shows no IL warnings.
A WorkOS id names no avatar, so the row read the session's requester and
showed a letter whenever the session had no work item.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The work-context read path now retrieves viewer identity and caches it for up to five minutes within the current authentication generation. The view model uses the viewer’s avatar for an absent or viewer-owned requester and clears cached viewer state on terminal results.
The client requests /api/users/me/identity. The reader can request viewer identity alongside the summary read and reports the viewer body or a failure status. Tests cover identity parsing, ownership checks, optional viewer reads, and viewer response statuses.
The source settles viewer identity for the current generation and reuses it on later reads for up to five minutes. A read that completes after the generation changes returns no viewer. Tests cover authentication invalidation, cache expiry, and generation changes during a read.
The view model uses the viewer avatar when the requester is absent or owned by the viewer. Otherwise, it resolves the avatar from the requester ID. Terminal results clear viewer state. Tests cover matching, absent, and nonmatching requesters, and signed-out reads.
The requester row can miss the viewer’s picture for an empty requester, and a slow identity lookup can delay the pane. These are localized issues that can be fixed or accepted before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a374f
The change enriches a displayed profile picture without granting additional access. A successful background account switch can leave the previous account’s identity attached to subsequent reads until refresh. Normal sign-in and rejected-credential paths invalidate the cache, limiting the concern.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: A settled viewer is bound to the app’s invalidation generation, not the effective credential used by the HTTP handler. If another account replaces the same profile’s stored token and recovery successfully adopts it after a 401, the generation does not change. Subsequent successful reads can retain the former viewer identity within the five-minute reuse window, and a session with no requester can display that viewer’s picture. Explicit sign-in invalidation and final 401 handling protect other paths; no additional server authorization is gained.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified exposure is previous-viewer identity and avatar data retained within one desktop source across its sessions. The inspected consumer uses that identity for image selection, not authorization. Credential recovery remains profile- and server-bound, so this concern does not establish arbitrary tenant access or credential disclosure.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The cross-account path requires an existing settled viewer, replacement credentials for the same profile and server, rejection of the active bearer, and successful recovery without app notification. The new cache can then attach the former viewer to reads under the replacement account. This is a conditional presentation-data isolation issue, not a demonstrated remote account takeover.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — A final viewer 401 joins the existing any-401 signed-out rule. Sign-in notification explicitly invalidates authentication, and generation fencing prevents pre-invalidation identity from settling afterward. Avatar requests remain separate from bearer-authenticated server requests.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Viewer transport and parsing failures degrade enrichment instead of settling an unusable identity. Caller cancellation propagates. These controls preserve retry and teardown behavior, but they do not detect a successful effective-account change inside recovery.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind settled viewer identity to an effective-credential or principal epoch that also advances during successful recovery. This would close the unobserved account-switch path rather than relying on freshness expiry.

Explanation
Issue #1899 requires the "This session" requester row to show the viewer's picture when the requester is the viewer. The issue names GET /api/users/me/identity and its avatar_url as the source. The client side is implemented: WorkContextClient.GetViewerIdentityAsync requests the route. ViewerIdentityDto carries UserId, AvatarUrl, and Ids, and Owns matches the viewer's IDs, including a bare numeric ID treated as github:<id>. WorkContextReader reads the viewer when asked. ServerWorkContextSource settles the viewer per credential. In WorkContextViewModel.Projections.cs, ResolveRequesterAvatar uses _viewer.AvatarUrl when the requester is absent or owned by the viewer. Any other requester keeps the github: fallback, and a WorkOS-only non-viewer requester gets no picture. ApplyReady and ForgetViewer keep the avatar current. Tests cover route parsing, ownership, reader outcomes, source reuse and invalidation, and requester avatar selection. The picture only appears when the server returns avatar_url. That depends on kurrent-io/kcap-server#2644, which is outside this repository. The client-side requirements are met.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support the viewer avatar feature or its correctness. The channel method, client route, reader overload, identity DTO, JSON registration, and view-model avatar selection implement the requested behavior. The source cache, five-minute lifetime, generation scoping, and optional TimeProvider keep the viewer identity fresh and limit requests to one per credential, as the PR description states. The reader change that maps a viewer-only 401 to SignedOut supports auth invalidation. ApplyTerminal calling ForgetViewer prevents a stale viewer avatar after a terminal state. The tests cover these paths. No unrelated behavior was found in the reviewed changes.

Show the viewer’s avatar on the work-context requester row
✨ Enhancement🧪 Tests🕐 20-40 Minutes
AI Description
• Show the viewer’s avatar for their own or unnamed session requester, including merged identities.
• Preserve GitHub avatar fallback for other requesters and compatibility with older servers.
• Cache identity per credential, retry transport failures, and cover the behavior across client,
source, and UI tests.
Keep identity retrieval in the existing work-context read path: it reuses authenticated HTTP handling and gives the source control over per-credential caching and retries. A separate application-wide identity service would add lifecycle wiring for a single requester-row consumer.

1. A new account can show the old avatar✓ Resolved
Description
ApplyReady replaces _viewer only when the read supplies a non-null identity; terminal reads also
leave the previous value in the view-model. After a sign-out and another sign-in, a ready read with
no viewer can resolve a requesterless session against the previous account’s avatar.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The view-model retains the previous account's identity through terminal reads and can reuse its avatar after authentication changes.

- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/WorkContextViewModel.cs[411-440]
## Recommended Fix
Clear the stored viewer and recompute the requester avatar when authentication becomes invalid or a signed-out read applies. Ensure a later ready read without an identity cannot reuse the former account's viewer.

2. An old account’s avatar can return✓ Resolved
Description
ReadAsync stores a completed viewer result without checking whether authentication was invalidated
while the request was in flight. A read started under the previous credential can complete after
InvalidateAuthentication(), repopulate _viewer, and cause later sessions to skip the identity
request for the new credential.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
An identity read started before authentication invalidation can restore the previous viewer after invalidation.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ServerWorkContextSource.cs[21-49]
## Recommended Fix
Capture an authentication generation when starting the read, and store or return its viewer only if that generation is still current. Advance the generation when forgetting the viewer, including on sign-out.
ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools
3. Identity sign-outs remain cached✓ Resolved
Description
WorkContextReader.ReadAsync omits the viewer request’s HTTP status from its final-401 check and
sets ViewerFailed only for status zero. When the authorized identity route returns 401 while the
concurrent work-context requests succeed, ServerWorkContextSource receives Ready, settles a null
viewer, and neither retires the authenticated client nor requests identity again until
authentication is explicitly invalidated.
Omitting an identity request’s 401 from sign-out classification is a direct authentication-state
correctness bug.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The identity route requires authorization, and the viewer outcome retains its HTTP status, but the
reader excludes that status from the final-401 check. The source’s sign-out path runs only when the
reader returns SignedOut, so a nonzero viewer status instead produces a settled ready read with a
null viewer.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A final 401 from the authorized identity route is treated as a settled, ready read with an empty viewer instead of signing the read out.

- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/WorkItems/WorkContextReader.cs[76-79]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ServerWorkContextSource.cs[28-36]
## Recommended Fix
Include the viewer outcome in the reader’s final-401 classification before constructing a ready read, so the existing source sign-out path retires the client and clears the viewer cache. Keep the intentional 404 fallback for older servers, and test a viewer-only 401.
ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools
4. A malformed identity response blocks retry✓ Resolved
Description
ViewerFailed treats only status zero as an unanswered request, even when a successful HTTP
response could not be parsed into a viewer body. A bodyless or malformed 2xx identity response
therefore makes ServerWorkContextSource settle a null viewer and skip later identity requests for
that credential.
Malformed successful responses should not permanently settle retryable identity state; this is a
deterministic reliability fix.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The client can preserve a 2xx status while returning a null body; the reader's status-zero test
misses that unsuccessful outcome, which the source then caches as settled.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A successful HTTP status with no parsed identity body is cached as a settled viewer lookup.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/WorkItems/WorkContextReader.cs[76-79]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ServerWorkContextSource.cs[33-35]
## Recommended Fix

5. A rebuilt pane loses its cached avatar✓ Resolved
Description
ServerWorkContextSource.ReadAsync adds _viewer to its return value only after
LastReads.RecordAsync has cached the unmodified read. Once the initial lookup has settled,
subsequent reads omit the viewer request and replace the session cache with Viewer = null, so a
rebuilt pane lacks the avatar until its fresh read succeeds.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The source returns a viewer-enriched read but caches the original read without the viewer.
## Fix Focus Areas

7. Historical owners lose their photo✓ Resolved
Description
ViewerIdentityDto.Owns compares requester IDs without the normalization that kcap-server applies
to legacy bare-numeric GitHub IDs. When a requester is "5" and the identity response contains its

Reject viewer results from retired credentials
When InvalidateAuthentication() runs while a work-context read is in flight, AuthenticatedServerReads allows the retired lease's borrower to finish, but this block publishes its viewer without checking the authentication generation. If a new-credential read finishes first and the old read finishes afterward, the old identity overwrites _viewer and leaves _viewerSettled true, so subsequent sessions can indefinitely display the previous account's avatar without querying the current identity; guard this update with the credential generation or otherwise serialize the identity read.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Include the viewer request in 401 classification
When the identity request is the only concurrent request to receive a final 401—for example, when the credential expires between responses—the preceding signed-out check ignores viewer, and this expression marks the result as settled rather than failed. ServerWorkContextSource therefore returns Ready, retains the authenticated client, and permanently caches an empty viewer for that credential instead of following the documented behavior that any final 401 signs the read out; include viewer.StatusCode in the 401 classification.

Bound the viewer identity lookup with its own deadline.
The viewer lookup is awaited after the assignments, summary, item, and topology reads complete. A slow /api/users/me/identity response therefore holds the work-context read open, even when the other reads have finished. The request has no deadline shorter than the HTTP client default of 100 seconds, so the pane can stay pending for that long. Give the viewer lookup a shorter, separate deadline. A timeout then returns a failed viewer outcome, which already sets ViewerFailed. Caller cancellation and the existing 401 check still apply.

Closes #1899 — AI-4364
What & why
A session with no work item shows a "This session" requester row in the work-context pane, and it drew a letter for any WorkOS user: the row could only build a picture from a
github:id. The pane now asks/api/users/me/identityonce per credential and uses the returnedavatar_urlwhen the requester is one of the viewer's ids, or when the launch names no requester (the daemon is the viewer's own). Anyone else keeps thegithub:fallback.Needs kurrent-io/kcap-server#2644 to return the picture; against an older server the row keeps its letter, so the two can merge in either order.
Where to look
ServerWorkContextSourcesettles the viewer on any answer, a 404 included, and asks again only after a transport failure, a sign-out or an auth invalidation, so a server without the endpoint costs one request per credential.Verification
Reader, client, source and view-model tests cover: the viewer read only when asked, a transport failure retried while a 404 settles, the identity asked once per credential and again after invalidation, and the requester row picking the viewer's picture for an own id, a merged
github:id and no requester, but not for another user.dotnet publish -c Releaseshows no IL warnings.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
