Closes #957 — AI-2813

What & why

The server's terminal hub calls refused a caller without access by returning without acting, so the remote terminal pane read a refusal as a dropped connection. kurrent-io/kcap-server#2519 makes those calls throw the session-visibility denial, which ServerConnectionService already maps to HubCallResult.Denied. The pane now gives a denied subscribe its own Refused state: "You don't have access to this session's terminal." A failed one stays Offline. The composer already reported a denied send as "you cannot message this session".

Where to look

  • RemoteTerminalViewModel treats only Denied as Refused. A retryable re-check failure, which the server sends without the denial token, stays Offline, so a later access establishment subscribes again.
  • Compatible both ways. A server without #2519 still refuses silently, and the pane behaves as before.

Verification

  • RemoteTerminalViewModelTests: a denied subscribe reads Refused with its note, a failed one reads Offline, and the existing refused-subscribe cases (stale subscribe released, later frames dropped) now expect Refused.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Remote terminal access denials are now clearly distinguished from connection failures.
    • Users receive an access-denied message when terminal access is refused.
    • Failed connections continue to display the offline status.

High-Level Assessment

Using the existing HubCallResult.Denied outcome is the appropriate approach: it distinguishes an explicit refusal without changing connection handling or requiring view changes. Other failures remain Offline.

📝 Walkthrough

Remote terminal subscriptions now expose denied access as a distinct Refused phase with an access-denied note. Other unsuccessful subscriptions remain Offline. Unit tests cover both outcomes and update denied-subscription expectations.

No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed change.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 35385

The change distinguishes access denial from connection failure without granting additional terminal access or weakening existing input controls. Subscription cleanup and later reconnection behavior remain unchanged.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to the status shown for a terminal subscription. It does not add a caller, change the target agent identifier, or expand the terminal operations available in Refused.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The client interprets a hub denial result; Refused is not an authorization grant. It displays a fixed message rather than the server-provided reason, remains outside the Live-only input gate, and disables subsequent output delivery for the denied attempt.

Explanation

Issue #957 requires distinct denied handling, client mapping to HubCallResult.Denied, and compatibility with older normal replies. The reviewed implementation adds RemoteTerminalPhase.Refused, maps denied terminal subscribes to Refused, and displays RemoteTerminalViewModel.RefusedNote. Failed subscribes remain Offline. The PR summary identifies existing ServerConnectionService denial mapping and existing denied composer handling. The tests cover denied and failed subscribes, stale membership release, and later-frame suppression. Normal outcomes remain accepted for older servers.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes implement the terminal refusal behavior required by issue #957. The tests verify the new refused state, the failed state, stale subscription cleanup, and frame suppression. No unrelated change is shown.

1. The terminal comment preserves old history ✗ Dismissed
Description
The RemoteTerminalViewModel documentation describes an older server's silent refusal instead of
stating only the current compatibility behavior. This historical wording is in the pane's public

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The type comment narrates historical server behavior by contrasting the current refusal response with an older silent refusal. Comments should describe the current compatibility requirement without change-history narration.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/RemoteTerminalViewModel.cs[19-21]

## Recommended Fix
Rewrite the comment to state that explicit denial responses produce the `Refused` phase while servers that provide no denial response leave the pane `Offline`, without describing the older behavior as historical change.

🟡 Minor · Ignore terminal dimensions after refusal. · RemoteTerminalViewModel.cs:185-193

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Ignore terminal dimensions after refusal.

TerminalDimensions frames for the agent still reach the handler after a denied subscription sets _receiving = false. The handler updates _sourceSize and resizes Surface, so a refused surface can still change size.

Suggested fix
         lane.TerminalDimensions.Where(d => d.AgentId == agentId).ObserveOn(RxSchedulers.MainThreadScheduler).Subscribe(d => {

             _sourceSize = (d.Cols, d.Rows);
             Surface?.Resize(d.Cols, d.Rows);
             this.RaisePropertyChanged(nameof(SizeNote));
