What & why

Dragging a text selection past the top or bottom of the chat scrolls the transcript and the selection grows. The selection still cannot cross from one message into the next: each message is its own text view.

Where to look

While the button is held in the 28px edge band, the chat steps and the selection in the view under the pointer extends.

Verification

The app project builds. There is no automated drag-past-the-edge test.

  • Drag a selection past the top of the chat. The transcript scrolls up and the selection grows.
  • Drag past the bottom. It scrolls down and the selection grows.
  • The selection still stops at the message boundary.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added drag-to-select support for chat Markdown content.
    • Selection now extends as the pointer moves, including automatic scrolling near the top or bottom edges.
    • Text-box interactions are excluded from Markdown selection behavior.
    • Selection state is cleared when selection ends or the displayed content changes.

The pointer can sit on the viewport edge while the selection is still inside one message. Scrolling under it extends that message's selection.

📝 Walkthrough

ChatTabView now tracks Markdown selection drags. Near viewport edges, it scrolls the chat list and continues selection. Drag state resets on release, data-context changes, and visual-tree detachment.

Changes: Markdown drag selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Markdown selection extension
src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkViewSelection.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs
MarkViewSelection extends selection from viewer coordinates and reports active selection. MarkdownView forwards these operations for MarkdownViewer content.
Chat drag handling and edge scrolling

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 11c0c

The drag-selection flow has no concrete current-head merge risk; normal releases and message ownership are handled correctly.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1313c

The change remains within chat selection and scrolling. However, removing the view does not stop pending drag-scroll work, and its fallback can recurse indefinitely. Whether this can terminate the app depends on callback timing. No new execution, clipboard-write, or cross-session authority was identified in the inspected path.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Drag-scroll work is not cancelled on visual detachment. If a pending frame executes after detachment while selection remains active near an edge, the no-TopLevel fallback repeatedly calls QueueEdgeScroll and StepEdgeScroll synchronously, including at a clamped scroll boundary. This can exhaust the UI call stack and escape the intended view-local failure boundary. Actual post-detachment callback delivery remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported failure scope is the local desktop UI process. The conditional recursion requires active drag state and a lifecycle or scheduling transition; displayed Markdown alone is not shown to trigger it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected new call chain changes scroll position and selection focus. It does not call the separate clipboard-copy or link-command paths, so those existing capabilities are not newly granted through selection extension.

Auto-scroll chat during text-selection drags

✨ Enhancement 🕐 20-40 Minutes

AI Description

• Scroll the chat when a selection drag reaches the top or bottom viewport edge.
• Extend the active message’s selection as the transcript moves, without requiring pointer movement.
• Keep selection within its message; automated edge-drag coverage is not included.

High-Level Assessment

The existing selection is owned by each MarkdownViewer, so scrolling the chat alone cannot advance it while the pointer is stationary. Frame-driven scrolling paired with an explicit selection extension fits that boundary without introducing cross-message selection or synthetic pointer events.

Drive edge scrolling during selection drags

• Tracks held-button drags over chat markdown and scrolls in 18-pixel steps while the pointer remains in a 28-pixel edge band. Each step extends selection in the tracked view; drag state resets on release or data-context change.

MarkViewSelection.csExtend MarkView selection without pointer movement +11/-0

Extend MarkView selection without pointer movement

• Adds an entry point that translates a viewer-relative point into the selection layer and moves the focus to a hit-tested or nearest text position when an anchor exists.

MarkdownView.csExpose selection extension to the chat view +4/-0

Expose selection extension to the chat view

• Adds an internal forwarding method for extending markdown selection, guarded so it runs only when the markdown viewer is the active content.

Action required

1. Changing tabs during a drag can crash the app ✓ Resolved
Description
QueueEdgeScroll calls StepEdgeScroll synchronously when the view has no top-level window, but
StepEdgeScroll calls QueueEdgeScroll again while the pointer remains in the edge band. If a
queued animation frame runs after the chat view is detached mid-drag, _dragSelecting remains true
and the calls recurse until the stack overflows.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R417-419]

+        if (TopLevel.GetTopLevel(this) is not { } top) {
+            StepEdgeScroll();
+            return;
Relevance

●● Moderate

The detached-view recursion risk is plausible, but no closely matching accepted or rejected
precedent was found.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Detaching the view does not clear _dragSelecting; a pending callback still enters
StepEdgeScroll, whose final call re-enters QueueEdgeScroll. Once detached, the new no-top-level
branch makes that cycle synchronous.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An animation frame queued during a drag can run after the chat view is detached. Without a top-level window, the edge-scroll fallback and its requeue call recurse synchronously.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[110-118]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[415-447]

## Recommended Fix
Do not call `StepEdgeScroll` synchronously when there is no top-level window. Clear the active drag state on detach so pending frame callbacks cannot continue the loop.

Remediation recommended

2. Fallback text selections stop growing ✗ Dismissed
Description
MarkdownView.ExtendSelection forwards the stationary pointer position only when its content is a
MarkdownViewer. When deeply nested text is rendered through the existing SelectableTextBlock
fallback, the chat can edge-scroll beneath the pointer, but this extension call does not advance
that message’s selection.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs[R65-66]

+    internal void ExtendSelection(Point pointInView) {
+        if (Content is MarkdownViewer) MarkViewSelection.Extend(_viewer, pointInView);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent precedent explicitly accepted routing selection operations to deep-nesting
SelectableTextBlock fallbacks.

PR-#1588

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Render substitutes a SelectableTextBlock for deeply nested text, while ExtendSelection does
nothing for that content type. The chat’s edge-scroll loop calls ExtendSelection without another
path to advance the fallback selection.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs[89-100]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[428-446]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A Markdown message rendered as fallback selectable text receives edge-scroll calls, but its selection is not advanced while the pointer stays still.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs[65-67]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs[89-100]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[444-445]

## Recommended Fix
Add an extension path for the fallback `SelectableTextBlock`, or route its drag through a supported selection mechanism, so scrolling beneath a stationary pointer advances the selection in either rendering mode.

3. Plain-text chat rows do not edge-scroll ✗ Dismissed
Description
OnSelectionDrag starts a drag only when the event source is within a MarkdownView, unless a
Markdown drag was already active. Selections begun in the chat’s standalone SelectableTextBlock
rows, including shell commands and tool details, therefore never enter the new edge-scroll loop.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R403-405]

+        if (e.Source is not Visual visual) return;
+        var view = visual.GetSelfAndVisualAncestors().OfType<MarkdownView>().FirstOrDefault();
+        if (view is null && !_dragSelecting) return;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent precedent accepts fixes ensuring SelectableTextBlock fallbacks fully support text selection
behavior.

PR-#1588

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The chat templates contain selectable shell-command, output and tool-detail controls outside any
MarkdownView. For a drag starting in one of them, the new handler returns before setting
_dragSelecting or queuing a scroll.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[145-204]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[396-411]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The drag handler ignores selections that start in standalone selectable text rows because those controls have no Markdown ancestor.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[396-411]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[145-204]

## Recommended Fix
Recognize eligible standalone `SelectableTextBlock` drag starts as well as Markdown drag starts, and connect their selection behavior to the edge-scroll path without allowing selection to cross rows.

Informational

4. Button drags stop new messages following ✓ Resolved
Description
OnSelectionDrag sets _followTail to false for any left-button move over a MarkdownView,
without checking whether a text selection began. A slight move while pressing a link or code-block
button leaves that flag off after release, so subsequent messages do not scroll into view until the
reader returns to the bottom.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R407-408]

+        _dragSelecting = true;
+        _followTail = false;
Relevance

● Weak

A close precedent rejected changing follow-tail state during long text-selection pointer drags.

PR-#786

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new tunnel handler sees held-button moves, sets _followTail off when it finds a Markdown
ancestor, and release clears only _dragSelecting. OnScrollChanged calls ScrollToEnd only while
follow-tail is enabled.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[53-58]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[385-393]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[396-413]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Moving a held pointer over a Markdown message disables follow-tail even when the press was on an interactive control rather than selectable text.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[396-413]

## Recommended Fix
Track where the press began and disable follow-tail only after confirming a text-selection drag. Do not treat moves originating from links or buttons as selection drags.

a drag first becomes active, preserving the originating MarkdownView instead of
replacing it when crossing messages. Clear _dragView alongside _dragSelecting in
both the early reset path within OnSelectionDrag and OnSelectionDragEnded.
- Around line 428-447: Update the selection-drag lifecycle around StepEdgeScroll
and OnSelectionDragEnded so losing pointer capture or receiving a top-level
pointer release/button-state transition always clears _dragSelecting and stops
the queued edge-scroll callback. Preserve normal selection completion inside
ChatItems while ensuring the loop cannot continue after input ends outside it.

Addressed findings 1 and 4 in 11c0c4c (also gated OnSelectionDrag on MarkdownView.IsSelecting and HasSelection so button presses / non-selection moves do not disable _followTail). Findings 2 and 3 are skipped because Avalonia's SelectableTextBlock has no stationary-pointer selection extension API.
