What & why

Selecting chat text holds the reading position while output arrives. Clearing the selection and returning to the bottom resumes following; sending a prompt clears the selection, scrolls to the latest turn and follows its output.

Where to look

Track selected Markdown views from input and plain-text selection changes, removing them on reuse or detachment. Frequent scroll checks inspect only selected views and respect visibility. Link presses keep the transcript still until release, including when a code-padding drag starts a selection.

Verification

  • Rendered interaction tests cover Enter and Send, selection clearing and hiding, row reuse, plain-text fallback, code-padding selection, and link clicks during incoming output.
  • Markdown rendering and selection regression suites passed.
  • NativeAOT CLI publish completed without warnings.
  • Manual selection and send checks should be repeated on this head before merging.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved text selection in Markdown chat content by preventing automatic scrolling to the latest message while selecting.
    • Follow-tail behavior pauses during active selection and resumes when selection is cleared or hidden.
    • Scrolling and wheel gestures now refresh reading-position behavior more reliably.
    • Sending a message from a scrolled-up chat clears selection, returns to the latest content, and continues following new messages.
    • Both Send button and Enter-key submission now provide consistent scrolling behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

ChatTabView coordinates Markdown selection, follow-tail behavior, scrolling gestures, and send-state changes. MarkdownView reports and clears active selections. Smoke tests cover selection clearing, hidden selections, appended content, row reuse, and sending from a scrolled position.

Changes: Chat follow-tail behavior

Track selections and control follow-tail

MarkdownView reports selection changes to ChatTabView. Visible selections block automatic end-scrolling. Clearing or hiding a selection can restore follow-tail. Gesture handling clears toggle anchors. Tests cover fallback text, row reuse, code padding, clearing, collapsing, and appended content.

A selection near the bottom is not the reader returning to the tail. Follow-tail stays off until the selection is gone.

Keep chat text selection in place while new output arrives

AI Description

• Stop follow-tail when the reader drags to select text in a chat message.
• Prevent new output from scrolling away a held selection; resume following after it clears at the
 bottom.

High-Level Assessment

Keep the fix in ChatTabView, where follow-tail is controlled. Its existing MarkdownView selection state supplies the needed signal without introducing shared selection state or changing the rendering component.

Pause follow-tail during Markdown selection

• Adds a tunneling pointer-move handler that disables follow-tail for a left-button drag originating in Markdown. Scroll changes also disable follow-tail while any realized Markdown view holds a selection, preventing an automatic jump to the end.

Remediation recommended

1. Clicks can stop new chat output scrolling ✓ Resolved
Description
OnSelectionMove sets _followTail to false for any left-button move inside a MarkdownView,
without checking whether text is being selected. A slight pointer movement while pressing a link or
code-block button can therefore stop subsequent output from following the bottom, even though the
reader neither selected text nor scrolled away.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R462-463]

+        if (!e.GetCurrentPoint(ChatItems).Properties.IsLeftButtonPressed || !OriginatesFromMarkdown(e)) return;
+        _followTail = false;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedent fixes held-button movement disabling follow-tail without confirming an active
selection.

PR-#1640

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new handler checks only the pressed button and source ancestry. The existing bubble handler
requires IsSelecting before tracking a drag and HasSelection before disabling follow-tail;
OnScrollChanged does not restore a false flag when appended content has moved the bottom below the
viewport.

PR-#1640

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Left-button movement inside any markdown control disables follow-tail even when no text selection exists.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[461-464]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[405-423]
## Recommended Fix
Remove the unconditional tunnel-side flag change or gate it on an actual non-empty selection. Keep ordinary button and link pointer movement from changing follow-tail.

2. Hidden selections block live chat scrolling ✓ Resolved
Description
SelectionHeld() counts every descendant MarkdownView, including one inside a collapsed thinking
body. If text was selected before that body was collapsed, returning to the bottom cannot re-enable
follow-tail while the hidden view retains its selection.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R466-467]

+    bool SelectionHeld() =>
+        ChatItems.GetVisualDescendants().OfType<MarkdownView>().Any(static view => view.HasSelection);
Relevance

●● Moderate

Selection persistence is accepted, but no close precedent addresses selections retained by collapsed
views.

PR-#1640

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The thinking body's IsVisible binding hides its border without removing the nested markdown view.
HasSelection reads stored selection endpoints rather than visibility, and the new scan checks that
value without a visibility condition; its result overrides the bottom check in OnScrollChanged.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkViewSelection.cs[46-50]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[394-402]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The selection scan treats markdown inside a collapsed thinking body as a held selection, preventing follow-tail from resuming.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[466-467]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[140-143]
## Recommended Fix
Restrict the scan to effectively visible markdown views so collapsing a selected thinking body does not keep its invisible selection active for follow-tail decisions.

Ensure clearing a selection without triggering OnScrollChanged enables

an active selection disables it.
- Line 463: Update OnSelectionMove so Markdown pointer movement disables
_followTail only after an actual text selection exists; keep follow-tail enabled
for left-button moves without selected text, and perform the selection check
after Markdown handles the move.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Include directly selectable chat text in SelectionHeld.

If a reader selects text in a tool-output SelectableTextBlock, this check finds no MarkdownView selection. OnSelectionMove also ignores that pointer movement. Follow-tail remains enabled, so an appended message can scroll the selected text out of view. Detect selection in directly selectable chat rows as well.
