AI-3823 — no GitHub issue

What & why

A markdown link inside bold or italic opens. A link also opens while the agent is working: the chat does not jump to the end between the press and the release, which was swallowing the click.

Where to look

Chat markdown hoists the link out of the emphasis. Follow-tail does not scroll while the primary button is down.

Verification

ChatLinkHoistTests passed: a bold link is a real hyperlink and the click records the URL.

  • Click a bold link and a bare URL. Both open.
  • Do that again while a long command is running. Both still open, and the view does not jump away under the click.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Chat markdown now supports clickable links within formatted text, including bracketed links, autolinks, and bare URLs.
    • Chat content uses dedicated markdown rendering for improved link interaction.
    • Emphasized image placeholders retain their text and formatting.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Follow-tail scrolling no longer interrupts an active pointer press.
    • Follow-tail recovery now works reliably after pointer release, capture loss, or secondary pointer interaction.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for formatted links, image placeholders, and follow-tail scrolling behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

The chat Markdown flavor now uses a link-hoisting pipeline. ChatTabView defers follow-tail scrolling during active primary pointer presses and resumes it after valid completion events.

Changes: Chat Markdown Links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and verify chat link rendering
src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs, src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/LinkHoister.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Views/MarkdownView.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatLinkHoistTests.cs
The chat flavor selects ChatPipeline.Instance. The pipeline converts autolinks and hoists non-image links. UI tests verify clickable links and emphasized image placeholders.

Follow-Tail Pointer Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track pointer presses and guard follow-tail scrolling
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatTabViewSmokeTests.cs
The view tracks primary pointer presses, clears state during lifecycle changes, and defers follow-tail scrolling until release, capture loss, or window deactivation. Smoke tests cover transcript growth and pointer completion cases.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

Suggested reviewers: alexeyzimarev, realtonyyoung

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to efc15

The change is mergeable, with focused lifecycle tests recommended to protect follow-tail behavior during deactivation and visual-tree detachment.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to efc15

The change makes more chat links interactive while retaining user-triggered opening and the existing URL restrictions. No security bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty is limited to unusual URL handling and rendering failure paths.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is interaction with agent-authored URLs in the desktop client. Newly activated links inherit the existing ability to open arbitrary absolute HTTP, HTTPS, and mailto destinations; they do not gain a new scheme allowance or opener authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The examined path from chat Markdown through hyperlink activation to the production opener did not establish a policy bypass. The harness's direct URL collector is test-only and does not demonstrate a production network sink or identity transition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Policy checks occur both before creating a clickable hyperlink and immediately before external opening. Nonpermitted schemes remain nonclickable, and nested links do not create an independent inner hyperlink while an outer link scope is active. These controls predate this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing opening boundary catches opener failures rather than propagating them into the window. The pointer-scroll change does not synthesize link activation, and deferred work is guarded against acting on a replaced or detached chat context.

MarkView only activates a hyperlink that is a direct inline of its text block. Follow-tail must not scroll between press and release, or the click is read as a drag.

Make emphasized chat links clickable during live updates

🐞 Bug fix 🧪 Tests 🕐 20-40 Minutes

AI Description

• Hoist chat links out of emphasis so MarkView can activate them without losing formatting.
• Pause follow-tail scrolling during a primary-button press so live updates cannot swallow the
 click.
• Add a UI test confirming that a bold link opens its URL.

High-Level Assessment

A separate chat pipeline reuses the existing link hoister without applying GitHub-specific processing to chat. Guarding follow-tail during the press directly addresses the pointer movement that prevents activation.

Remediation recommended

1. Emphasized chat image labels lose styling ✓ Resolved
Description
ChatPipeline hoists image link nodes with children out of their emphasis, while the chat image
renderer writes a plain placeholder run without rendering those children. For **![badge](url)**,
the visible placeholder therefore moves outside the bold span rather than retaining its previous
formatting.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[22]

+                if (leaf.Inline is { } root) LinkHoister.Hoist(root);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Clear renderer mismatch; hoisting image labels without rendering children loses existing emphasis
styling.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new pass applies the hoister to chat images. The hoister lifts an image with label children and
wraps only those children in copied emphasis, but the chat renderer ignores them and writes its
placeholder as a bare run.

## Issue description
Hoisting chat images removes the emphasis that styled their visible placeholder text.

## Recommended Fix
Exclude images from the chat hoist while continuing to hoist ordinary links, and test the rendered formatting of an emphasized chat image placeholder.

2. Emphasized automatic links stay unclickable ✓ Resolved
Description
ChatPipeline calls LinkHoister.Hoist, but that helper collects only LinkInline nodes and
leaves AutolinkInline nodes inside emphasis. When chat contains **<https://example.com>**, the
renderer produces a hyperlink beneath the emphasis rather than as a direct paragraph inline, so the
new chat-link behavior does not cover it.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/ChatPipeline.cs[22]

+                if (leaf.Inline is { } root) LinkHoister.Hoist(root);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Clear edge-case correctness bug; autolinks should receive the same direct-inline hoisting as regular
links.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new chat pass calls a hoister that collects only link nodes. The GitHub pass explicitly converts
autolinks to link nodes before invoking the same hoister, and the chat renderer otherwise writes the
autolink hyperlink in its existing inline position.

- src/Capacitor.App/GitHubHtml/InlinePass.cs[23-38]
## Recommended Fix
Convert chat autolinks to link nodes before hoisting, preserving their URL and displayed text, and add a chat click test for an emphasized angle-bracket URL.

3. Chat can remain short of the latest message ✓ Resolved
Description
OnScrollChanged skips ScrollToEnd() while _primaryDown is true, but OnReaderGesture only
clears the flag on release and does not catch up. If the transcript grows during a press and nothing
changes its scroll extent after release, follow-tail remains enabled while the viewport stays above
the end until another scroll change.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[409]

+        if (_followTail && !atBottom && !_primaryDown) scroll.ScrollToEnd();
Relevance

●●● Strong

Release should restore follow-tail immediately; otherwise the transcript can remain visibly behind
without another extent change.

PR-#1640

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The scroll-change handler retains _followTail but now suppresses its only ScrollToEnd() call
during a press. The release handler clears _primaryDown without scheduling another scroll.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[131-135]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[394-409]

Agent prompt

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[131-135]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[403-409]
## Recommended Fix
Record when a tail scroll was deferred and, after the release click has completed, scroll to the end if follow-tail is still enabled and no reader selection or gesture has taken ownership.

4. Releasing outside chat can stop auto-follow ✓ Resolved
Description
_primaryDown is cleared by a pointer-release handler registered only on ChatItems, with no
matching release or cancellation handling outside the list. If a press begins on uncaptured chat
content and the pointer is released outside the list, subsequent scroll changes keep skipping
ScrollToEnd() because the flag remains true.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R132-135]

+        if (e.RoutedEvent == PointerPressedEvent)
+            _primaryDown = e is PointerPressedEventArgs pressed && pressed.GetCurrentPoint(ChatItems).Properties.IsLeftButtonPressed;
+        else if (e.RoutedEvent == PointerReleasedEvent)
+            _primaryDown = false;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Pointer gesture state needs release or capture-loss cleanup; analogous gesture-state fixes were
accepted recently.

PR-#1640

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new flag is set on a list press and gates every follow-tail scroll. Its release handler is
attached only to the list; the other explicit resets occur only on data-context change or
detachment, leaving an outside release without a reset.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[55-61]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[103-123]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[131-135]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The press flag can remain set after a pointer release outside the chat list, indefinitely suppressing follow-tail scrolling.
## Fix Focus Areas

- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[131-135]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[403-409]

tracks the active primary pointer rather than being overwritten by unrelated
presses or releases. In the PointerPressedEvent branch, record the primary
pointer identity when the left button is pressed; in the PointerReleasedEvent
branch, clear _primaryDown only when that same pointer is released, preserving
follow-tail suppression while the primary press remains active.
- Around line 132-135: The pointer state handling around PointerPressedEvent and
PointerReleasedEvent must also reset _primaryDown when pointer capture is lost
or cancelled. Add the applicable PointerCaptureLostEvent handling on ChatItems,
or on the control that owns capture, while preserving the existing press and
release behavior so OnScrollChanged can resume follow-tail scrolling.
- Line 409: Update OnReaderGesture to capture primary-button release before
clearing _primaryDown, then queue a guarded follow-tail scroll via a new
QueueFollowTailAfterRelease method. In OnScrollChanged, preserve _followTail for
extent-only changes while the primary button is pressed, and retain the existing
immediate scroll behavior otherwise.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add focused smoke cases for deactivation and detachment.

Follow_tail_resumes_after_a_primary_press covers release and capture loss, but not the separate Window.Deactivated and OnDetachedFromVisualTree branches. A stale _primaryPointer keeps PrimaryDown true, so later extent growth sets _tailDeferred instead of scrolling to the tail. Use LoseKeyboardFocus and a window content detach/reattach to cover these lifecycle paths, then append rows and assert that follow-tail resumes.
