What & why

Every hook-recorded muse exec session stayed active on the server. Muse documents 15 s for SessionEnd hooks, but muse exec kills the hook well inside a second (shutdown_steps.hooks_ms ≈ 570 ms), so a hook that drained the log and posted the end itself died before its POST, and because it killed the watcher first, the parent-exit backstop was gone too. The hook now writes the end payload it would have posted into the watcher directory and makes sure a watcher is running; the watcher, a detached process, claims the request by renaming it, drains the log, posts the end behind any spooled backlog, and releases the claim only once it is posted or spooled. Only a session with no log is posted directly from the hook.

Where to look

A resume between hand-over and claim must not end the resumed session: the hook marks the session resumed, a claim whose hand-over predates the mark is dropped and a successor watcher armed, and a watcher's own parent-exit end is withheld while a live Muse process is claimed for the session. The watcher retires its pid file before its last look for a request, so an end written after that look gets a watcher of its own.

Verification

dotnet run --project test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/<Class>/*": MuseHookCommandTests 51 passed, MuseSessionEndRequestTests 4, WatcherMuseEndHandoffTests 7, AgentSessionsTests 18. Reproduced live on kcap 1.3.0-beta.9 / Muse 1.4.10 with the hook wrapped in a tracing shell: SessionEnd fired, the watcher was killed, the hook never reached its exit line, muse exec returned one second later, and the session stayed active.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of Muse session endings when a watcher is active or needs to be started, helping ensure end events are delivered reliably.
    • Prevented outdated session-end events from being posted after a session resumes, and preserved valid events for processing.
    • Improved coordination when a session is active in another process, reducing the risk of duplicate or incorrect session-end events.

… hook

Under muse exec the SessionEnd hook is killed well inside a second (shutdown_steps.hooks_ms
reads ~570 ms), not the documented 15 s, so a hook that drains before posting dies before the
POST and the session stays active. The detached watcher outlives the hook; it drains and posts
the hook's own payload. Killing the watcher first also removed the parent-exit backstop.

📝 Walkthrough

Muse hooks now hand session-end payloads to watchers through request files when a log exists. Watchers claim and post these requests during shutdown. Resume markers and live process claims guide stale-request handling and successor watcher startup.

Changes: Muse Session-End Handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Store and claim session-end requests
src/Capacitor.Cli/Harness/Muse/MuseSessionEndRequest.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Harness/Muse/MuseSessionEndRequestTests.cs
Request files support writing, claiming, unclaiming, release, and deletion. Resume markers record whether a session resumed after handoff. Tests cover request state and timestamps.
Track session claimants and watcher parents
src/Capacitor.Cli/AgentSessions.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/WatcherManager.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/WatcherSpawnRequest.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/ProcessWatcherSpawner.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/AgentSessionsTests.cs
AgentSessions exposes live claimant lookup, and watcher spawning accepts an optional parent PID. WatcherManager can claim the current coding-agent process for a session.
Create requests from Muse hooks
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/Harness/MuseHookCommand.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/Harness/MuseHookCommandTests.cs
When a log exists and posting is configured, SessionEnd writes a request and ensures a watcher is running. SessionStart and rearm mark the session resumed and handle handed-off requests. Without a log, SessionEnd posts directly.
Claim and post handoffs during watcher shutdown
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/WatchCommand.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/WatcherMuseEndHandoffTests.cs
Muse watchers claim requests before or during shutdown. They post handoffs before parent-exit synthesis, release or unclaim requests based on posting outcomes, and arm successor watchers when needed.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 966a3

Session ends can arrive out of order or after a session resumes, potentially leaving session state incorrect. Resolve these handoff-ordering risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 966a3

The handoff improves delivery when the hook is terminated early, but interruption of the background process can strand a pending session-end request. Normal delivery failures have cleanup paths; abandoned ownership does not have an established recovery path. No new cross-account access path was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new durable handoff has an incomplete recovery lifecycle. Claiming removes the canonical request by renaming it to an owner-specific file. Owner termination before posting or spooling, or a read failure after rename, leaves that request outside later canonical claim lookups. Normal delivery failures can unclaim the request, but the retiring watcher then exits without scheduling another consumer. Thus the hook can successfully transfer ownership without an established path to eventual completion. This introduces an unrecovered ownership state despite improving the earlier hook-termination failure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated change affects local Muse session lifecycle delivery using the configured server context. Tampering with the new request input requires filesystem access to its location. The inspected flow fixes the outbound route and watcher session identity; cross-account or server-wide authority expansion was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The handoff adds another filesystem input before authenticated delivery, but local payload replay already existed through the unchanged lifecycle spool. Likewise, the direct watch command's permissive session-ID handling predates this PR. These facts are counterevidence to treating local request tampering or direct CLI invocation alone as a newly introduced privilege boundary bypass; protection of a separately configured watcher directory remains unestablished.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Resume markers protect session-run ownership when successfully written and read. Marker write failures are ignored, and read failures are interpreted as no resume; stale-end suppression therefore remains best-effort rather than a fail-closed ownership guarantee. No security consequence of that lifecycle misclassification was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define owner-incarnation-aware recovery for abandoned claims and an explicit retry trigger for returned requests. Recovery should preserve the original end identity, reapply resume invalidation, and account for a POST that succeeded before its owner terminated.

Hand Muse session ends to the watcher for reliable posting

🐞 Bug fix 🧪 Tests 🕐 40+ Minutes

AI Description

• Hand Muse SessionEnd payloads to live watchers before muse exec terminates the hook.
• Let watchers drain and post those payloads; retain hook-side posting when no watcher is alive.
• Clear stale requests when rearming watchers and test the handoff and fallback paths.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Spawn a dedicated end-posting process
  • ➕ Could handle session ends independently of watcher liveness.
  • ➖ Adds another process and requires coordination with the watcher's final drain and parent-exit POST.

Recommendation: Use the existing detached watcher as the handoff owner: it already knows when the final drain is complete and can replace its synthesized parent-exit end with the hook's payload. Keep the hook-side fallback for sessions without a live watcher rather than introducing a second background process.

Action required

1. Delayed starts reopen Muse sessions ✓ Resolved
Description
PostHandedSessionEndAsync posts the handed Muse end directly, bypassing PostInOrderAsync and the
lifecycle drain that keep an end behind spooled starts and transcript tails. If a session-start or
earlier transcript work is still pending, the end can reach kcap-server first; a later replayed
start then clears the terminal state and makes the session active again.
Code

PR-#1184

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
PostInOrderAsync checks spool.HasBacklog(sessionId) and appends an event instead of posting it
when earlier events are waiting, keeping a stranded session-start ahead of the end. The shared drain
orders start, transcript, then end, and the former SessionEnd hook used PostInOrderAsync; the new
watcher path instead makes an independent HTTP POST without checking that backlog. The server
appends a late start and clears terminal state when folding it, explaining how delivery in the wrong
order can reactivate the session.

## Recommended Fix
Route handed ends through ordered lifecycle delivery rather than posting them independently. Before attempting delivery, check the session's `HookSpool` backlog and pending transcript work; queue the end behind that work using the `session-end/muse` route, or drain the earlier work in order before posting it, as `MuseHookCommand.PostInOrderAsync` does for spooled events.

2. Session ends vanish during watcher exit ✓ Resolved
Description
HandleSessionEnd checks IsWatcherAlive and writes the request without coordinating with the
watcher's exit, then returns without posting. If the watcher passes its final request read and exits
between that check and the write, no process consumes the request or sends the end.

3. Outages strand Muse sessions ✓ Resolved
Description
WatchCommand deletes the handed Muse session-end request after PostHandedSessionEndAsync, even
though PostSessionEndPayloadAsync returns normally after HTTP errors, timeouts, or exceptions
without spooling the payload. If delivery fails because of a server outage or credential problem,
the hook has already returned and the only persisted end is removed, leaving no retry for the
SessionEnded event that closes the server-side session.

PR-#609
PR-#1366

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The hook writes a handed request instead of posting the end, and the watcher deletes that request
after calling a POST helper that logs non-success responses and catches delivery exceptions without
reporting failure. The former hook path used PostInOrderAsync/PostOrSpoolAsync to retain failed
lifecycle POSTs in HookSpool, but the watcher does not use that spool. The server records the
terminal event only when its Muse end handler runs, and its session projector sets terminal status
when processing that event.

9. Stalled watchers can post a second end ✓ Resolved
Description
HandleSessionEnd now runs InlineDrainAsync without first stopping a watcher that
IsWatcherAlive considers stale. If that process resumes and later completes its parent-exit path,
it can synthesize its own end after the hook has posted one.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/Harness/MuseHookCommand.cs[250]

Watcher liveness includes heartbeat freshness, so a running process can fail the hook's probe. The

10. A test file contains two primary types ✓ Resolved
Description
WatcherCrewEndDecisionTests.cs now declares both WatcherCrewEndDecisionTests and the public

11. Muse hook stays outside vendor folder 📘 Rule violation ⌂ Architecture
Description
The changed MuseHookCommand keeps Muse-specific session-start and session-end handoff logic under

The watcher posts a handed end behind the session's spool backlog and spools it on failure,
deleting the request only once it is posted or spooled. It retires its pid file before its last
look for a request, and the hook re-checks the pid file after writing one, so an end written
after that look is posted by the hook. A watcher the hook will not hand to is killed before the
inline drain, so it cannot post a second end later.

Qodo cross-repo findings 2 and 3 (a handed end overtaking spooled starts; an outage dropping the only copy) are addressed in 988f4fb: the watcher posts a handed end through AgentHookPoster.PostOrSpoolAsync behind the session's HookSpool backlog, spools it on a transient failure or lapsed auth, and deletes the request only once it is posted or spooled.

The descriptions match finding 1 (ordered delivery) and finding 3 (durable spooling), not finding 2. The catalog already marks findings 1 and 3 as implemented; finding 2 covers the separate watcher-exit race and is also marked implemented. Please confirm whether you intended findings 1 and 3.

The hook hands an end to any watcher whose pid file is live, including one still connecting,
so that watcher's early exit has to take its last look for a request as well.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A watcher leaving as the hook writes could otherwise read the request on its way out while the
hook, finding no pid file, posted it too. Renaming the request is the one step only one of them
can win. A claim whose post neither lands nor spools stays on disk and the watcher falls back to
its parent-exit synthesis; a watcher stopped before it connected drains the log inline first.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A hook that claimed the end and was then killed mid-drain took the only copy with it, so a
session with a log is always handed to a watcher: the one alive, or one armed for it. A stale
request found while re-arming is discarded through the same claim, so a watcher already leaving
with it keeps it.

…annot spool

Re-arming marks the session resumed, so a watcher holding a claim taken before that moment
releases it instead of ending the session's new life. An end that neither posts nor spools is
tried once more the way a parent exit is posted, which needs no spool.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A claim is a rename, so a watcher that could neither post nor spool it renames it back,
unless a newer request has since been handed over; the parent-exit post now reports whether
the server took the end.

A resumed run's hooks claim its process, so the watcher that followed the old process asks
for a live claimant before posting its own exit as the session's end, and hands the claimant
to the successor it arms; a re-arm now puts back an end handed over after the resume mark.

Keep a failed handoff behind the session backlog.

If HookSpool.HasBacklog(sessionId) is true and Append fails, PostHandedSessionEndAsync returns Failed. This direct fallback can then POST session-end before a spooled session-start. A successful fallback also releases the only handoff request. Do not use the direct POST while a backlog exists; retain or unclaim the request for ordered retry.

PostHandedSessionEndAsync checks ResumedSince once, then calls PostOrSpoolAsync. Rearm can write the resume marker after that check while delivery is pending. The watcher can then post or spool the earlier run's end after the session resumes.

Coordinate the resume marker with the handoff claim/post, or make the server reject handed ends from before the current run.

Qodo findings 10 and 11:

  • 10 (two primary types in one test file): fixed in 966a356, WatcherMuseEndHandoffTests now has its own file.
  • 11 (Muse hook outside Harness/Muse/): declined for this change. Every vendor's hook command lives in Commands/Harness/ (Capacitor.Cli.Commands.Harness is one of the namespaces CLAUDE.md lists as following the layout), and MuseHookCommand was already there before this PR; the Muse-specific type this PR adds, MuseSessionEndRequest, is under Harness/Muse/. Moving the hook commands is a layout change for all vendors, not part of a session-end fix.

Understood:

  • finding 10 is addressed by commit 966a3561, which moves WatcherMuseEndHandoffTests into its own file.
  • finding 11 is intentionally retained: vendor hook commands consistently live under Commands/Harness/, and this PR already places the new Muse-specific helper under Harness/Muse/. The placement rule can be updated or disabled here: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2762984?state=active

The findings catalog still shows both as open; I have not changed their statuses.

The direct parent-exit post bypasses the spool, so it runs only when the session has no
