Closes #1412 — AI-3648

What & why

By default Grok runs the hooks that Claude Code's and Cursor's configs declare, and hands them Grok's payload. With kcap set up for either vendor, kcap hook --claude / --cursor fire on every Grok event. They stamp that vendor as active, and on UserPromptSubmit/Stop they post to the server for up to 30 s, exiting 1 when it is unreachable. Any kcap hook other than --grok now returns 0 when GROK_HOOK_EVENT is set and the payload's camelCase hookEventName names that same event. Otherwise stdin is put back untouched.

Where to look

The payload check exists because a session started beneath a Grok hook inherits GROK_HOOK_EVENT; an env-only check would silence that session's own hooks, and would break Codex's required {"continue":true}. --grok is excluded ahead of the Grok harness landing.

Verification

  • ForeignHookUnderGrokTests (real binary), 6/6:
    • a Grok payload with --claude/--cursor gives exit 0, empty stdout and an empty config dir
    • controls without the variable stamp the vendor
    • inherited variable + Claude payload still stamps; + Codex payload still answers "continue":true
  • The Grok-payload cases failed before the fix, and the nested cases failed against an env-only guard.
  • GrokHookEnvironmentTests 9/9; changing the check to is not null fails the empty-value case.
  • dotnet publish -c Release: no IL2xxx/IL3xxx warnings.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hooks from other supported tools are now recognized when invoked by Grok and can exit cleanly without creating vendor activity records.
    • Hooks belonging to the supported tool continue to run normally, even when the Grok event setting is present.

Grok runs the hooks Claude Code's and Cursor's configs declare, with its own
payload; left alone they stamp that vendor active and post for up to 30 s.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI checks GROK_HOOK_EVENT and the hook payload before normal handling of non-Grok hook commands. It exits with code 0 for a matching Grok payload. Otherwise, it restores stdin and continues normal hook processing.

Changes: Grok Hook Guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect Grok hook payloads
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Harness/Grok/GrokHookEnvironment.cs
A public helper checks whether GROK_HOOK_EVENT is set and whether the payload's hookEventName matches its value. Invalid JSON and missing or empty event values do not match.
Skip matching payloads
src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs
When a non-Grok hook command runs in a Grok hook environment, the CLI reads stdin. It returns 0 for a matching Grok payload. Otherwise, it restores stdin for normal hook handling.
Verify hook behavior
test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Harness/Grok/GrokHookEnvironmentTests.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs
Unit tests cover environment and payload matching. Integration tests cover Claude and Cursor behavior with and without the variable, plus Claude and Codex hooks with inherited Grok variables.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~15 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a78c5

Matching Grok payloads are skipped, while other payloads continue to their vendor hooks. No merge-blocking issue remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a78c5

The guard prevents Grok events from being recorded as another vendor’s activity without granting additional authority. Normal nested Claude and Codex payloads retain their existing behavior. Interrupted-input handling and recovery after repeated skipped events remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed exposure is suppression of processing for a local hook invocation whose environment and stdin match the classifier. That branch does not resolve profiles, obtain credentials, post data, or invoke vendor handlers. External server authorization and deployment exposure were not established by this review.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller controlling both environment and stdin can forge a matching pair and suppress vendor processing. This is routing classification, not authenticated vendor identity. No introduced authorization bypass was established: selected vendors already permit caller-controlled KCAP_SKIP no-ops, and spool delivery retains its authentication checks.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The successful no-op prevents reaching vendor lifecycle work rather than admitting input past a control. On the continuing spool-delivery path, unusable URLs and lapsed authentication still block delivery; the guard does not modify those checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Skipped invocations bypass retention reaping as well as delivery. Continuing invocations retain the existing bounded, authentication-gated drain and per-session ordering logic. Evidence does not establish an independent cleanup schedule when only matching skipped hooks occur.

Explanation

Issue #1412 requires a non-Grok hook to return 0 before it reads stdin when GROK_HOOK_EVENT is set. Program.cs reads all stdin in ReadToEndAsync() before it checks hookEventName. The tests prove the matching-payload case, but they do not satisfy the issue's explicit no-read requirement.

Resolution

Make the non-Grok hook return 0 before reading stdin when GROK_HOOK_EVENT is non-empty, or update #1412 to explicitly accept the payload-aware behavior and its stdin read. Preserve the required nested Claude and Codex behavior if the payload-aware exception remains required.

AI Description

• Prevent Grok-triggered hooks for other vendors from recording incorrect sessions or contacting the
server.
• Preserve normal vendor hooks and future --grok hooks; verify both paths with unit and process
tests.

High-Level Assessment

Keep the guard at the CLI entrypoint: it prevents config, input, and hook side effects before they begin. Guarding individual vendor handlers would duplicate the check and run unnecessary startup work; changing Grok's treatment of other vendors' configured hooks is outside this CLI's control.

1. Subprocess tests run without shared limits 📘 Rule violation ▣ Testability
Description
ForeignHookUnderGrokTests starts real kcap child processes but its test class has no
ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit> attribute. Running the integration suite at full parallelism can
oversubscribe the shared subprocess capacity as more tests are added.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs[15]

Evidence
The checklist requires every test class that starts real OS-level subprocesses to use
ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>. The changed test class starts a kcap process at lines 75-76 but
has no limiter attribute at its declaration.

2. Test bypasses the shared process helper 📘 Rule violation ☼ Reliability
Description
ForeignHookUnderGrokTests obtains a configured ProcessStartInfo but launches it with
Process.Start instead of using the Helpers.KcapProcess wrapper. Any lifecycle, identity, or
cleanup behavior added to that wrapper will not apply to these real kcap spawns.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs[R75-76]

+        var process = Process.Start(psi) ?? throw new InvalidOperationException("failed to start kcap");
+        _spawned.Add(process);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Shared process wrappers are expected for real child lifecycle and cleanup; direct launches bypass
that contract.

PR-#1205
PR-#415

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires real kcap binary spawns in tests to go through Helpers.KcapProcess.
Although the test uses KcapProcess.StartInfo to build startup settings, it directly calls
Process.Start and stores the raw process, so the wrapper does not launch or manage the child.

Rule 2808227: Use Helpers.KcapProcess for real kcap binary spawns in tests
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs[59-60]
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs[75-76]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The integration test starts the real kcap binary directly with `Process.Start`, bypassing the required `Helpers.KcapProcess` abstraction.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/ForeignHookUnderGrokTests.cs[59-76]

## Recommended Fix
Use the `Helpers.KcapProcess` wrapper, initialized with the test `DaemonStore`, to launch kcap and retain the wrapper's configured process lifecycle and cleanup behavior. Keep the per-test working directory and environment overrides applied through the wrapper's returned process configuration or its supported API.

3. Grok dispatch stays outside its harness 📘 Rule violation ⌂ Architecture
Description
Program.cs contains the vendor-specific Grok hook bypass condition instead of delegating that
behavior to the required vendor harness location. Future changes to Grok hook semantics must
therefore be found and maintained in the CLI composition root alongside cross-vendor dispatch code.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs[R100-103]

+// Another vendor's kcap hook run by Grok would record Grok's payload as that vendor's session.
+if (command == "hook" && !args.Contains("--grok") && GrokHookEnvironment.IsGrokHook(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable)) {
+    return 0;
+}
Evidence
The checklist requires vendor-specific harness logic to live under the appropriate
Harness/<Vendor>/ directory and assembly. The new Grok-specific --grok exclusion is embedded in
src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs, while only the environment helper is placed under Harness/Grok/.

Rule 2762984: Place vendor-specific harness code only in the correct Harness/<Vendor>/ assembly and directory
src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs[100-103]
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Harness/Grok/GrokHookEnvironment.cs[1-12]

A session started beneath a Grok hook inherits GROK_HOOK_EVENT; its own hooks
carry their vendor's payload, which never names the event as hookEventName.

Qodo findings, all declined:

  1. Subprocess limiter. test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/AssemblyInfo.cs already applies [assembly: ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>] to every test in this assembly, so a class-level attribute would add nothing.
  2. KcapProcess wrapper. KcapProcess exposes only StartInfo (it pins the daemons and config dirs) and has no launch or lifecycle wrapper. KcapProcess.StartInfo followed by Process.Start is how every real-binary test here spawns, e.g. UnusableUrlHookMatrixTests and ClaudeSessionEndHandoffTests.
  3. Grok dispatch in Program.cs. The Grok-specific logic (the variable name and the payload shape) is in Harness/Grok/GrokHookEnvironment. What stays in Program.cs is the vendor-flag gate, which has to run at the composition root, before stdin is read and before any hook prelude. The KCAP_SKIP gate right above it is written the same way.

I agree that all three findings are declined based on the repository’s actual conventions:

  • finding 1 — Subprocess tests run without shared limits: This is a false positive. test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/AssemblyInfo.cs:10 already applies [assembly: ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>] to the entire integration-test assembly, so adding the same limiter to ForeignHookUnderGrokTests would be redundant. Rule management: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2808212?state=active
  • finding 2 — Test bypasses the shared process helper: This is a false positive for this codebase. KcapProcess exposes StartInfo only (test/Capacitor.Tests.Helpers/KcapProcess.cs:18-42); it does not provide launch or lifecycle management. The same KcapProcess.StartInfo + Process.Start pattern is used by existing tests such as ClaudeSessionEndHandoffTests and UnusableUrlHookMatrixTests. Rule management: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2808227?state=active
  • finding 3 — Grok dispatch stays outside its harness: I agree this is also a false positive. Grok-specific semantics—the environment variable and hookEventName payload matching—remain in GrokHookEnvironment. Program.cs:100-108 only performs the composition-root gate, which must run before stdin consumption and hook dispatch; this parallels the existing KCAP_SKIP gate immediately above it. Rule management: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2762984?state=active

I have not dismissed them, because “declined” does not explicitly request a dismissal action. If you want them closed, ask to dismiss findings 1, 2, and 3.
