What & why

Adds kcap setup --local: on a fresh Mac it downloads the signed local-edition bundle of the CLI's own version, installs and starts the server unit fenced, and commits it as the active profile's server (None stamp). It then continues with the usual harness, daemon and import steps. --json emits the same progress as JSON lines for the desktop wizard. A cancelled or failed setup leaves a complete installation or none; an interrupted one is finished or undone from the lifecycle journal on the next run.

Where to look

  • LocalInstaller/LocalSetupCommit/LocalSetupRollback/LocalSetupRecovery: the order the server's fence contract needs (commit decision journaled first; journal cleared only after a 200 /auth/config without Kcap-Installation: pending).
  • The launchd label is per user while roots are per KCAP_LOCAL_ROOT, so the unit is only ever touched when its owner root is proven to be this one.

Verification

  • On this Mac with bundle 1.3.0-beta.10: --json committed in 38 s, terminal in 35 s; after each, /auth/config 200 without the pending header, journal gone, profile http://localhost:9473 + None; a rerun reused it in <1 s with no download.
  • Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit 7165 passed, Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit 4754 passed, 0 failed; AOT publish prints no IL warnings.
  • KCAP_LOCAL_SETUP_CHECK=1: SIGTERM mid-download ends failed/cancelled, exit 130, nothing left behind.

Rollback eligibility ends when the committing write is attempted, not when
it returns: a throw there may follow a landed rename, so nothing is deleted.

The restart fallback now stops only a unit proven to be this root's, under the unit lock.

Nothing is touched until the entry passes validation, and the profile is published to the recorded config_dir, never the current one.

A foreign server on the same port answers unfenced, so it would otherwise prove the lift and receive the profile.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds kcap setup --local for local server installation and reuse. The workflow includes signed bundle verification, durable installation state, recovery and rollback, terminal and JSON Lines output, and setup documentation.

Changes: Local edition setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Journal and durable publication
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalEdition/*, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Config/*, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Auth/*, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/ServiceFiles.cs
Journal entries represent server startup as Allow, Fenced, or Deny. Durable directory creation, configuration publication, and service-file writes include flushes, directory syncing, and fault points. OnlyServer checks profile URLs at commit.
Bundle retrieval and extraction
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Http/LocalBundleClient.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalEdition/LocalBundleManifest.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalBundleUnpacker.cs, test/*/LocalBundle*Tests.cs
The bundle client retrieves bounded manifests and archives. Manifest verification checks signatures and metadata. Extraction rejects unsafe paths and links and requires a root-level kcap-server.
Preflight and unit ownership
src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/*, related tests
Preflight checks platform, socket paths, profiles, and installation state. Unit ownership readings and a per-user lock support checks across installation roots.
Install, reuse, and recovery
src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalInstaller.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalSetup*.cs, related tests
The installer stages and starts a bundle, checks server responses, and commits registry and profile state. The implementation also handles reuse, rollback, and journal-based recovery.
Command, cancellation, and documentation
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/*LocalSetup*, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/InteractiveLifetime.cs, README.md, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Resources/help-setup.txt
Setup parses --local options and supports terminal prompts or JSON Lines. Deferred interrupt handling supports cancellation. Successful local setup supplies the local server URL and updates next-step output. Documentation describes platform limits, required answers, JSON output, and bundle overrides.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 05acf

No identified issue currently blocks merging local setup after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05acf

The installation has substantial recovery and ownership safeguards, and downloaded code is verified before execution. Its security model explicitly requires a single-user machine. Remaining uncertainty concerns the bundled server’s runtime enforcement and behavior under real service-manager failures.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is the installing user’s service, installation directories, registry, and selected profile. The terminal continuation makes that endpoint authoritative for subsequent setup; no system-wide privilege elevation or cross-tenant deployment change was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Archive extraction rejects escaping paths and unsupported entry types, copies only previously extracted hard-link targets, defers symlink creation, verifies resolved symlink confinement, and restricts extracted Unix permissions to the owner.
  • observed — Installation probes bypass proxies and refuse redirects. However, readiness and pending-state responses are public semantic checks, not authenticated installation identity; the temporary port checks do not reserve the listener through startup. This limitation must be interpreted within the explicitly single-user deployment model.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation before the commit decision invokes rollback; after the decision, commit and recovery proceed without the caller’s cancellation token. Failures preserve the journal, and restart requires proof that the service belongs to the installation root.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before broadening support to shared machines or mutually untrusted local processes, bind responder acceptance to installation-specific identity rather than the public pending header, and validate the protocol with a real competing listener and interrupted startup.

High-Level Assessment

Keep the shared, journal-driven installer: it gives terminal and desktop clients the same transaction and preserves the server's fencing contract. A separate installer process or independent JSON implementation would duplicate recovery and ownership decisions without improving the commit boundary.

1. Ordinary config writes now force disk sync ✗ Dismissed
Description
ConfigMutator.Publish calls stream.Flush(flushToDisk: true) even when its durable argument is
false. Ordinary config mutations use that default, so every such write now incurs a forced disk
flush despite not requesting durable publication.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Config/ConfigMutator.cs[R138-139]

+                if (durable) FaultPoints.Hit($"flush:{path}");
+                stream.Flush(flushToDisk: true);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Durability-sensitive config changes are accepted, and this unconditional disk flush clearly imposes
avoidable cost on ordinary writes.

PR-#1524

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new flush lies outside the durable condition, while the ordinary mutation overload calls
Publish without enabling durability.

## Issue description
The new durable-publication path forces a disk sync for ordinary config mutations too.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Config/ConfigMutator.cs[131-140]
## Recommended Fix
Condition the flush-to-disk call on `durable`. Keep normal stream disposal for non-durable writes, and cover both publication modes in tests.

2. Rerun refuses a local profile written as 127.0.0.1 ✓ Resolved
Description
CommitPrecondition.OnlyServer uses ServerIdentity.SameServer, which compares host and path
exactly. The preflight's CheckProfiles, by contrast, uses LocalEndpoints.Classify, which treats
localhost, 127.0.0.1 and [::1] on the active port as the same local installation. On a reuse
run, a profile that names the installation as http://127.0.0.1:<port> (or with a path) passes
preflight. The server is then started and probed, and PublishProfileAsync fails with "profile '…'
points at http://127.0.0.1:…; local setup needs every profile on http://localhost:…", because the
precondition is checked against the config before the mutation is applied. The same mismatch would
hit a roll-forward of a committing journal if such a profile appeared after the preflight.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Auth/CommitPrecondition.cs[R23-26]

+    public sealed record OnlyServer(string Url) : CommitPrecondition {
+        internal override void Check(ProfileConfig config, string profile) {
+            foreach (var (name, other) in config.Profiles) {
+                if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(other.ServerUrl) || ServerIdentity.SameServer(other.ServerUrl, Url)) continue;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent auth precedents accept server-binding mismatches; this preflight and commit identity
inconsistency is a concrete rerun failure.

PR-#387

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The preflight accepts a profile when Classify returns Local. Classify matches only on a
loopback host and the active port, so every loopback spelling and any path count as the local
installation. OnlyServer instead uses SameServer, which canonicalizes to
scheme://host:port/path and compares ordinally, so 127.0.0.1 and localhost do not match.
CommitBoundary runs Precondition.Check on the current config before ConfigMutation, so even
the active profile being repointed is refused. ReuseAsync calls PublishProfileAsync with
existing.ServerUrl (the canonical localhost URL) only after the server has been started and
probed.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The preflight (`LocalPreflight.CheckProfiles`) treats any loopback spelling (`localhost`, `127.0.0.1`, `[::1]`) on the active installation's port as the local installation. The commit precondition `CommitPrecondition.OnlyServer` uses `ServerIdentity.SameServer`, which compares host and path exactly. A profile that passes the preflight can therefore be refused at commit time, after the server has already been started.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Auth/CommitPrecondition.cs[23-31]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalPreflight.cs[118-127]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalSetupCommit.cs[83-95]

## Recommended Fix
Make both checks use the same equivalence. Either canonicalize every profile URL through `LocalEndpoints.Canonicalize` before `OnlyServer` compares it (for example, pass a canonicalizing function or the `LocalEndpoints` into the precondition), or make `CheckProfiles` require `ServerIdentity.SameServer(profile.ServerUrl, active.ServerUrl)` so the refusal happens in the preflight, before anything is started. Add a test where the reuse path has a profile spelled `http://127.0.0.1:<port>`.

3. A setup comment keeps a step label ✓ Resolved
Description
The XML summary for LocalSetupTerminal calls the implementation “Step 1” and describes the flow by
that plan number. Because the setup pipeline can evolve independently of the numbered plan,
maintainers may treat the label as a contract and follow outdated sequencing when changing the
terminal arm.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/LocalSetupTerminal.cs[R7-8]

+/// <summary>Step 1 of <c>kcap setup --local</c> in a terminal: the preflight, the two answers, then the install
+/// rendered as status lines.</summary>
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent review accepted removing process-step labels from comments because sequencing references
become stale as flows evolve.

PR-#765

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist prohibits time-sensitive or process-reference metadata such as task or phase labels in
code comments. The added XML summary explicitly labels this implementation as “Step 1” rather than
describing only its current behavior.

Rule 2897915: Avoid time-sensitive or process-reference metadata in code comments

4. The live test uses an unsafe raw PID ✗ Dismissed
Description
SetupLocalCancelLiveTests extracts kcap.Id and passes the integer to a helper that launches
/bin/kill with that PID. The TERM and KILL checks therefore use raw PID-based process control
instead of capturing and waiting through PidIdentity, leaving the test exposed to PID ownership
and reuse ambiguity.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[R68-73]

+                await Signal(kcap.Id, "TERM");
+
+                while (await kcap.StandardOutput.ReadLineAsync(exit.Token) is { } line) lines.Add(line);
+                await kcap.WaitForExitAsync(exit.Token);
+            } finally {
+                if (!kcap.HasExited) await Signal(kcap.Id, "KILL");
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent process-test precedents accepted replacing raw PID checks with identity-aware process
handling due to PID reuse risk.

PR-#841
PR-#1356

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist forbids direct PID-based liveness or termination handling and requires PidIdentity
capture and identity-aware waits. The changed test passes kcap.Id to Signal, which formats the
raw integer into /bin/kill arguments for TERM and KILL.

Rule 2807091: Tests must use PidIdentity helpers instead of directly asserting on raw PIDs
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[68-74]
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[99-101]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The live integration test controls the child process by passing its bare integer PID to a separately spawned kill command, bypassing the PidIdentity ownership and liveness abstraction.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[54-74]
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[99-102]

## Recommended Fix
Capture the started process with `Helpers.PidIdentity.Capture` while it is alive and use the approved identity-aware process-control or termination helper for signaling and exit checks. Do not transport `Process.Id` as a bare integer to raw PID liveness or termination logic.

5. A server name after --local is silently ignored ✓ Resolved
Description
LocalSetupArgs.Parse checks only rest[0] for a positional server name, leaving names after flags
unvalidated. With commands such as kcap setup --local --single-user acme or `kcap setup --local
--yes example-tenant, parsing succeeds, HandleAsync` also misses the name, and setup proceeds
against a new local server without telling the user the name was ignored.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/LocalSetupArgs.cs[R17-18]

+        if (rest.Length > 0 && !rest[0].StartsWith('-'))
+            return Refuse($"'{rest[0]}' names a server, and --local sets up its own on this machine. Drop one of them.");
Relevance

●●● Strong

A recent parser precedent accepted rejecting positional names regardless of argument ordering to
prevent silently ignored server arguments.

PR-#1005

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The parser checks rest[0] for a positional name, while its subsequent loop rejects only listed
conflicting flags. After parsing succeeds, SetupCommand enters the local installation branch;
because its tenant detection also looks only at the first argument, a name after --single-user or
--yes is neither used nor reported.

## Issue description
Terminal local setup accepts and silently ignores a positional server name placed after a flag, then proceeds with a local installation.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/LocalSetupArgs.cs[14-36]

## Recommended Fix
Validate every argument against the accepted local flags and flags passed through to later setup steps. Skip values belonging to known value-taking flags, such as `--plugin-scope` and `--default-visibility`, but reject any other non-flag argument regardless of position using the existing positional-name error message. Add tests for `setup --local --single-user acme` and `setup --local --yes example-tenant`.

6. Live tests oversubscribe subprocesses 📘 Rule violation ▣ Testability
Description
SetupLocalCancelLiveTests starts the real kcap process and additional system processes but
declares only NotInParallel, not ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>. Running this test alongside
other process-heavy tests bypasses the shared subprocess pool and allows unrestricted concurrent
child-process work.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[R19-20]

+[NotInParallel(nameof(SetupLocalCancelLiveTests))]
+public class SetupLocalCancelLiveTests {
Relevance

● Weak

A recent integration-test finding requiring ParallelLimiter for subprocesses was explicitly rejected
by the team.

PR-#1413

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires every test class that starts real subprocesses to use
[ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>]. The changed class starts kcap, kill, id, and launchctl
processes but has only [NotInParallel].

Rule 2808212: Use ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit> for test classes that spawn real subprocesses

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[54-54]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The integration test launches real child processes but is not enrolled in the shared subprocess limiter; `NotInParallel` does not provide the required cross-class process limit.

7. The live test creates an unmanaged temp root 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
Description
SetupLocalCancelLiveTests creates a random directory directly under /tmp and later deletes it
with Directory.Delete instead of using its injected TempDir. When the opt-in integration test
runs, this temporary state is outside the helper’s lifecycle and cleanup guarantees.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[R37-38]

+        var root = Path.Combine("/tmp", "kls-" + Guid.NewGuid().ToString("N")[..6]);
+        Directory.CreateDirectory(root);
Relevance

● Weak

A recent matching TempDir-rule finding against direct temporary filesystem management was rejected.

PR-#974

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires tests that need throwaway directories to use TempDir and prohibits direct
temporary-root creation and cleanup. The changed test constructs /tmp/kls-... directly and deletes
it manually.

Rule 2767472: Use TempDir helper for all temporary filesystem state in tests
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[36-38]

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[25-87]

## Recommended Fix
Construct the test root through the injected `TempDir` property and its helper methods, using a resolved child path if the socket-length constraint requires it. Remove the manual `Directory.CreateDirectory` and recursive delete so TempDir owns cleanup.

8. Tests bypass managed temp cleanup 📘 Rule violation ▣ Testability
Description
LocalBundleClientTests constructs new TempDir() inside seven test methods instead of receiving
the framework-managed [TempDir] property. Each test owns and disposes its directory locally,
bypassing the required injected lifecycle for TUnit test classes.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Http/LocalBundleClientTests.cs[100]

+        using var tmp = new TempDir();
Relevance

● Weak

A recent matching TempDir-rule finding was rejected despite manually managed temporary filesystem
state.

PR-#974

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires TUnit test classes that use temporary directories to declare a public
required [TempDir] property and forbids manually managed TempDir instances. The changed tests
create local TempDir instances at lines 100, 114, 125, 137, 149, 161, and 171.

Rule 2808173: Use injected [TempDir] public required property in test classes
test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Http/LocalBundleClientTests.cs[98-171]

Agent prompt

9. The live test bypasses kcap control 📘 Rule violation ☼ Reliability
Description
SetupLocalCancelLiveTests obtains a ProcessStartInfo from KcapProcess.StartInfo but then calls
Process.Start directly instead of constructing and starting Helpers.KcapProcess with the daemon
store. The real kcap child therefore bypasses the wrapper that centralizes its launch configuration
and lifecycle handling.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Integration/LocalEdition/SetupLocalCancelLiveTests.cs[R45-54]

+            var psi = KcapProcess.StartInfo(Daemons.Store, new ConfigRoot(Tmp.CreateDir("config")),

+            psi.Environment["HOME"]                         = Tmp.CreateDir("home");
+            psi.Environment[LocalRoot.EnvVar]               = root;
+            psi.Environment[LocalBundleClient.BaseUrlEnvVar] = bundles.Url;
+            psi.Environment[LocalBundleClient.VersionEnvVar] = "1.3.0-beta.10";
+            psi.Environment["KCAP_TELEMETRY"]               = "0";

PR-#1413
PR-#1537

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires real kcap binary spawns in tests to go through Helpers.KcapProcess

the returned start info with Process.Start(psi) directly.

Rule 2808227: Use Helpers.KcapProcess for real kcap binary spawns in tests

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalEdition/ServerStart.cs:
- Around line 7-16: Reorder the ServerStart enum so Deny is its zero value,
followed by Allow and Fenced. Keep the member names unchanged so the name-based
mapping in LocalStateFiles.ToJournal and FromJournal remains intact.

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs:
- Around line 2486-2517: Update InteractiveLifetime.ExitNow to write the
cursor-restoration escape to stderr instead of stdout, keeping setup --local
--json stdout limited to JSON lines.

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.Cli/LocalEdition/LocalPreflight.cs:
- Around line 172-174: Update ResolvedDirectory to check the result of
CanonicalPath.TryResolve and reject resolution failure or an empty resolved path
before using it to build the return value; use the existing UnsafeRoot refusal
path for the failure.

Review comments at
@test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Auth/OnlyServerPreconditionTests.cs:
- Around line 30-38: Update
`OnlyServer_admits_a_loopback_spelling_of_the_same_server` to assert the
intended outcome directly instead of branching on `ServerIdentity.SameServer`;
rename it to reflect that the numeric loopback spelling is refused, and assert
`CommitPreconditionFailedException`. Set `Local` to the canonical localhost form
if needed so the other tests cover production spelling.

The preflight already accepts 127.0.0.1 and [::1] for the active origin; the
commit precondition compared literally, so a config preflight passed always
ended commit_failed. The target profile is rewritten to the canonical URL.

Recovery ignores a cancellation and commits; the reuse pass that follows
observed the cancelled token and reported cancelled with no committed line.

Only the first token was checked, so --local --single-user acme passed. The
values of the pass-through flags that take one are skipped.

A running line's frame timer kept drawing to the global AnsiConsole after its
test, into a later test that captures Spectre output and expects none.

The local edition has no Windows unit yet; its modes and symlinks fail there by design.
