… xterm measured it
## Change Fixes the emoji part of #268. herdr lays out its grid with current Unicode widths. Its attach stream relies on the browser's xterm moving the cursor exactly as far as herdr does. xterm defaults to **Unicode 6** widths, which disagree on most emoji: - `🤖`, `😀`, `✅` and `🚀` take 1 cell in xterm and 2 in herdr. - `⚠️ ` and `❤️` (a symbol plus the emoji presentation selector) take 1 in xterm and 2 in herdr. - `👨👩👧` takes 3 in xterm and 2 in herdr. herdr's next cell then overwrote part of the sequence, so the 👧 vanished, which is the loss reported in #268. After each such emoji the rest of the line shifted: the next letter overlapped the emoji, and stray characters from the previous frame stayed behind. Agents print `✅⚠️ 🚀` all the time. `src/lib/terminalWidths.ts` registers a Unicode provider that matches herdr's widths. It builds on `@xterm/addon-unicode-graphemes`, which adds Unicode 15 widths and joins emoji sequences into one cell. That addon disagrees with herdr in three places, and the provider corrects each one: | | addon | herdr | correction | |---|---|---|---| | spacing marks (Thai SARA AM in `น้ำ`, Devanagari `का`) | joined into the letter's cell | a cell of their own | a spacing mark starts a new cell, as it does under Unicode 6 today | | Unicode 14 and 15 emoji (`🫠 🫡 🫨 🩷`) | 1 cell (its tables predate them) | 2 | an emoji the browser marks as emoji-presentation is handled like a known 2-cell emoji (U+1F600), so it joins sequences the same way | | invisible format characters (ZWSP, LRM, RLO, word joiner, Hangul filler) | 1 cell | 0 | joins the cell before it, like ZWNJ | The addon's providers are reached only through `terminal.unicode.register`. To get one, `herdrWidthProvider()` activates the addon on an object that only collects what it registers; the addon touches nothing else. Each code point is classified once and cached, and code points below U+034F skip the check entirely. **About the addon version.** `@xterm/addon-unicode-graphemes` exists only as 0.4.0, released together with xterm 6.0. It declares no peer dependency. It relies on `charProperties`, which xterm 5.5 already has, and the property encoding is the same in 5.5. Both the headless and the browser runs below use our `@xterm/xterm` 5.5.0. The 0.8.0 `addon-unicode11` was also tried: it still disagreed on 15 of the 62 samples (VS16, ZWJ, skin tones, keycaps, Unicode 12+). ## Validation - **herdr's widths, measured.** Each of 62 samples was printed in a herdr 0.9 pane, followed by a DSR query (`ESC[6n`). herdr's emulator answers with its cursor column. The samples were then replayed in xterm 5.5 headless. Disagreements with herdr: | xterm with | disagreements | |---|---| | Unicode 6 (today) | 17 | | `addon-unicode11` | 15 | | `addon-unicode-graphemes` | 19 | | this provider | **2** | The 2 left are `a` + U+FE0F (a VS16 after a letter that isn't emoji) and a lone combining mark at column 0. Unicode 6 gets both of these wrong today too. - `src/lib/terminalWidths.test.ts` checks 16 of those herdr answers against the provider in a real xterm `Terminal`, plus a test that `👨👩👧` stays whole in one cell with the next letter at column 2. `bun run typecheck`, `bun run build`, `bun run test:unit` (715 pass) and `generate:types --check` all pass. - **Browser** (desktop Chrome and the iOS 27 simulator), on a pane in an isolated herdr session: - `🤖ab`, `🥰ab🫠cd`, `👨👩👧x🇰🇷y` and `😀👍✅x` now line up with herdr. - The family emoji draws as a single glyph, and the closing `|` set with `ESC[36G` stays in its column. Before, the ZWJ row shifted it one column right and left a stray `d` after `🫠`. - **Cost:** on a pane printing mixed CJK, emoji-free lines as fast as flow control allows, Chrome script time over 8s went from 0.60s to 0.64s. - **Size:** the addon adds 34KB to the bundle, 15KB gzipped. Independent of #272. Both add a line to the changelog, at different places, so they merge in either order.
Release v0.3.40: moves the Unreleased notes under 0.3.40 and bumps `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`. What's in it: - Fixes from #249, #251, #252, #263, #264, #265, #267. - The iPhone CJK and text-symbol fix (#272). - Emoji cell widths matching herdr (#273). Every changelog entry already ends with its PR link. All these PRs are by @devswha, so no credits to add. No remote bundle change: `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 9. The Windows PC part of #264 and #265 reaches a PC with the next remote bundle, as its changelog entry says.
<!-- See CONTRIBUTING.md for checks, translations, contract tests and the changelog. --> Refs #204 ## Change Settings gets two text fields, **Terminal font** (Appearance, under the terminal font size) and **Chat font** (Chat, under the chat font size). Each takes a comma-separated list in fallback order, like VS Code's `editor.fontFamily`, for example `D2Coding, "Cascadia Mono"`. - The list goes in front of the built-in fonts, never replacing them. A typo or a font missing on this device falls through to today's order, and `"Malgun Gothic"` stays last as the per-glyph Hangul fallback. Empty (the default) is exactly today's behavior. - In the terminal, the bundled `"Symbols Nerd Font Mono"` (#294) stays first and the user's list comes right after it: the icon font covers only the private use areas and never sizes a cell, so Nerd Font icons still draw when the chosen font has none. Its quote swap on load (the re-measure in `terminalGlyphs.ts`) keeps working, since the stack still names it in double quotes. - Stored per browser in the existing `herdr-web-ui:settings` record. - `sanitizeSettings` normalizes each list (`src/lib/fontFamily.ts`): a non-string becomes `""`; the text is composed to NFC, since a name copied from a macOS file name can arrive decomposed and the browser matches family names as written; `;` `{` `}` `<` `>` `\` and control characters are stripped; names are trimmed and empty ones dropped; a name CSS cannot read bare (spaces, a leading digit, a CSS-wide keyword) is double-quoted, and a quoted name stays quoted without being wrapped twice; stray quotes inside a name are removed. The 200-character cap drops whole names, so a cut never leaves an open quote. The result is idempotent. - **Terminal:** the chosen family is set on xterm only after `document.fonts.load()` settles (capped at 3s, never rejects), then `fit()` and `resize` as the font size change already did; observe mode and mirrored (fixed-grid) panes still send no resize. xterm re-measures the cell (and the DOM renderer its width cache) only when `fontFamily`/`fontSize` actually change. Setting the same value again is a no-op in xterm 5.5's `OptionsService`, so the family isn't set until the faces are there. The app uses no WebGL/Canvas addon, so there is no texture atlas to rebuild. A newer change or an unmount makes a pending load a no-op. For an installed font the load resolves at once; the wait matters for a web font. - **Chat:** the list applies to the transcript's prose only (`--font-chat` in front of `--font-ui` on `.chat-transcript`), as agreed in #204. Code blocks, inline code, work rows and paths keep `--font-mono`, and the composer is unchanged. - Works alongside #272 and #295: `terminalGlyphs.ts` measures what is drawn, so a font that already draws CJK at two cells, such as D2Coding, is left alone, and box-drawing characters are drawn to the cell whatever the font. - The fields save on blur, Enter or when the dialog closes, not on every keystroke. Saving per keystroke would sanitize away the comma or space being typed, and each terminal font change refits the grid and resizes the pane. - The built-in terminal stack moved from `PaneTerminal.tsx` to `src/lib/fontFamily.ts`, split into the icon font and the text fonts with the same names in the same order, so the composition can be unit tested. - Settings order in Appearance: terminal font size, **Terminal font**, wheel scroll speed; in Chat: chat font size, **Chat font**. - i18n entries for ko/ja/zh, DESIGN.md (Typography settings, Settings dialog) and a CHANGELOG line. Serving font files from the app for phones (part 2 of #204) is left for its own discussion, as agreed there. ## Validation - `bun run generate:types --check`: up to date - `bun run typecheck`: pass - `bun run build`: pass - `bun run test:unit`: pass (958 tests). New: `src/lib/fontFamily.test.ts` (stack composition, font loading: failure, timeout, missing API) and font family cases in `src/lib/settings.test.ts` (non-string, empty, whitespace only, unsafe characters, length cap, quoting, names with spaces, repeated or empty commas, decomposed (NFD) names, idempotence). - Browser check (headless Chromium with an isolated `herdr-web-ui-test` session and its own server, a shell pane it created): 1. Empty: xterm's font is the built-in stack, 120x49, as before. 2. `Ubuntu Mono` (installed there, and narrower than the font the built-in stack lands on there): the font applies, and the grid refits to 129x52. `stty size` in the pane reads `52 129`. 3. `NoSuchFont, "Also Missing"`: falls back to the built-in stack, still 120x49. 4. Typed `Ubuntu Mono ,, ` in Settings: nothing applied while typing; Enter saved `"Ubuntu Mono"`, and the grid refit and resized the pane to 129x52. Clearing the field and closing with Escape went back to the built-in stack and 120x49. 5. Chat font `Ubuntu Mono, Noto Sans KR`: transcript prose uses it in front of `--font-ui`; code blocks keep `--font-mono`. - The browser check above was rerun on top of #294 and #295, with the same results and the icon font first in every stack. - Desktop check (Windows Chrome through `bun run dev`, a shell pane of its own, before rebasing on #294 and #295), same test pattern: 1. Empty: looks the same as before. 2. `GulimChe` and `Sarasa Fixed K Nerd Font`, neither in the built-in stack: the terminal switches to the typed font, and Latin and Hangul line up, with each Hangul syllable filling exactly two cells. 3. Missing fonts: falls back to the built-in order. 4. A loosely typed list is saved normalized; clearing it and closing with Escape restores the built-in stack. 5. The chat font changes the message text only; code blocks, work rows and the composer keep their fonts. - Not checked on a phone. A phone rarely has a monospace font installed to name, so part 1 mostly helps desktops; the phone case is what part 2 is for. Screenshots (fonts not in the built-in stack, so the typed font visibly comes first): <img width="482" height="244" alt="terminal-gulimche" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/843e30b4-c0ea-45a7-ac45-ccc2ae167006" /> <img width="487" height="294" alt="terminal-sarasa-fixed-k" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/5ddb00be-bd98-42f4-b7d1-248cccff05c8" /> --------- Co-authored-by: Hako <devswha@gmail.com>
…of sending each jamo (#938) ## Change On an iPad with a hardware keyboard (Magic Keyboard), Korean typed in the terminal reached the PTY one jamo at a time: 한 arrived as ㅎㅏㄴ. Typing in Chat, or in an ordinary text field, was fine. I recorded the native event order with `scripts/terminal-ime-diagnostic.ts` on the iPad (iPadOS Safari 27.2 in its default desktop mode, so `navigator.platform` is `MacIntel`). It is different from both the macOS Safari path in #524 and ordinary composition: - Each jamo arrives as a printable `keydown` with its own keyCode, not 229 (`key: "ㅎ"`, `keyCode: 71`, `isComposing: false`), followed by a `keypress`. - The editor then composes with plain input events. A new syllable is `insertText`. A changed one is `deleteContentBackward` and then `insertText` of the whole result (ㅎ → 하 → 한). There are no composition events. xterm sends a single-character `key` on keydown and cancels the event (the `keyCode >= 48 && key.length === 1` branch of `evaluateKeyboardEvent`). The editor never gets to compose, so every jamo is sent on its own. This change leaves such a key to the editor: - `CompositionHelper.passHangulKey()` matches Safari on macOS or iPad, a Hangul jamo or syllable `key`, keyCode other than 229, no modifiers, and no screen reader mode. For such a key, `Terminal._keyDown` returns without sending or cancelling it, and marks the keydown handled so `keypress` doesn't send it either. - The editor's `insertText` then starts the existing Safari replacement preedit from #524. That path already commits the syllable once, on the next other key, a paste, a blur or a pane reset. It now also accepts: - a replacement of more than one syllable. iPadOS puts back 마아 when the final ㅇ of 망 moves on to a following ㅏ. - the `iPad` platform as well as `MacIntel`. English, shortcuts, Enter, Backspace and the macOS Safari path are unchanged. ### The pending syllable's size (second commit) With composing working, the syllable being typed looked smaller than the ones before it. On Apple fonts `terminalGlyphs.ts` (#272) draws a Hangul glyph in the rows up to 1.2x larger so it fills its two cells. The pending syllable is not in a row: xterm draws it in its composition view at the plain font size. On the iPad it measured 16 device px tall against 20 for the committed ones. `adjustTerminalGlyphs` now watches the composition view and gives it the fit its row will give it: the same `glyphFit`, with the spacing taken from xterm's own measure of the glyph (its `WidthCache` element), as the row's is. A canvas measures Hangul differently on macOS WebKit (11.2px against xterm's 13px at 13px), so the canvas alone gave the view 15.6px instead of the row's 14.45px. ## Validation - **New replay:** `scripts/terminal-ipad-ime-regression.ts` (also run from `ui-regression.ts`) replays the recorded iPad order for `navigator.platform` `MacIntel` and `iPad`. It covers: - English then Hangul, with no jamo sent while composing - a two-syllable replacement - commit before Enter, Ctrl+C and Tab - commit on blur - no leak into another pane on a pane switch - the pending syllable drawn at the size of a committed one It **fails on `main`** at the first Hangul keydown (the keydown is cancelled) and passes with this change. Run on macOS 27 with Chrome and with Playwright's WebKit. Without the second commit it fails in WebKit at the size check (`13px against 14.452889px`). In Chrome the rows need no fit for Hangul, so both are 13px there. - **Existing replay:** `scripts/terminal-safari-ime-regression.ts` (macOS Safari, #524) still passes. - **Real device:** iPad with Magic Keyboard, Korean 2-set, iPadOS Safari 27.2, using `terminal-ime-diagnostic.ts`. Typing `abc`, switching to Korean, `한글`, `?`, then Backspace several times delivered exactly `abc` `한` `글` `?` and one `\x7f` per Backspace to the PTY (`received.bin`), each syllable once. - `bun run generate:types --check` and `bun run typecheck`: pass. `bun run test:unit` on macOS: 2937 pass, 0 fail, 50 skip for the first commit (with `TMPDIR=/private/tmp`; the default macOS temp path is too long for `check.test.ts`'s sockets, as in #524). With both commits, on another Mac, the only failure is `scripts/phone-setup.test.ts` ("runs the active release's setup…"), which fails the same way on `main` on that machine. Refs #432. That issue is the macOS Safari English-to-Korean transition and stays separate; this is the iPad hardware-keyboard path next to it. Thank you for #524. Its replacement path made this a small change. I'm happy to adjust the key check or the test shape if you would rather keep the iPad case separate. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Noobear <tmshdnaos45@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Co-authored-by: Hako <devswha@gmail.com>

Change
Fixes the main part of #268. On an iPhone, Korean in the terminal looked spread apart. The
cell grid is built from Menlo's 0.6em width, so two cells are 1.2em. iOS has no font that draws
Hangul wider than 0.87em. xterm's DOM renderer fills the leftover 0.33em with
letter-spacingafter each glyph, so every syllable sat at the left edge of its cells with a 4.4px gap after it
(at 13px). Japanese kana and kanji had the same problem, and Chinese had a 2.7px gap.
src/lib/terminalGlyphs.tsadjusts each span the DOM renderer draws:larger, up to 1.2×, until it fills 90%. On iPhone Hangul goes from 72% of its slot to 87%;
1em Han glyphs go to 90%. A glyph in one cell is never enlarged.
moves the text right, and a negative margin takes that back so the next span keeps its column.
A

decomposed letter (
e+ U+0302 + U+0301), so Vietnamese from a Mac file name showedTiêngforTiếng. Text with combining marks, and decomposed Hangul, is now shown composed. Copy readsxterm's buffer, not the DOM, so it still returns the bytes the pane wrote.
emoji, about two cells wide inside their one cell. ⏺, the bullet before every Claude Code
message, became a blue square over the next character. Such a symbol, when it overflows its
cell, now gets U+FE0E (text presentation). Its spacing is then measured again.
The renderer rebuilds a row's spans on every render, and also on link hover, which fires no render
event. A
MutationObserveron.xterm-rowstherefore catches every span, and it runs before theframe paints. Glyph widths come from a canvas

terminal. Shrinking emoji to fit was tried and dropped: with xterm's current Unicode 6 widths,
most emoji have one cell and came out tiny. The emoji problems in iPhone terminal: Hangul, kana and Han glyphs leave a gap in their two-cell slot, so Korean looks broken apart #268 come from those widths
and are fixed in fix(terminal): count emoji and sequences in cells as herdr does #273.
