feat(install): offer to give the GitHub star through a signed-in gh - #550
Conversation
On a first install, install.sh mentioned a GitHub star with a link. When the gh CLI is signed in, it can now give that star: it reads whether the account has starred the repository, says nothing if it has, and otherwise asks once at the terminal and stars only on "y". Without gh, without a sign-in or without a terminal (an agent, a script, CI) it prints the link as before and asks nothing. The block moves to the end of the script, so that a question left unanswered loses none of the output above it. install.ps1 gets the same mention and question; it had neither. 📝 SummarySummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughBoth installers check GitHub star status after a new install. They prompt only when GitHub confirms that the account has not starred the repository and an interactive terminal is available. They submit a star only after an affirmative response. Tests and documentation cover this behavior. ChangesInstaller star prompt

From an adversarial review of the star step: - A terminal does not mean somebody is at it (an agent's pty, an unattended docker exec -t). The question now waits 20 seconds and goes on without a star; it is not asked when CI is set. install.sh reads the answer with bash's read -t, install.ps1 waits for a first key. - gh gets 10 seconds for each call. A gh that hangs no longer holds up an install that is done. - "Not starred" is GitHub's 404 status, read from `gh api --include`, not the text of an error. - Ctrl-C at the question ends install.sh with status 0: the install was done. - What was typed before the question is discarded, so that it is not taken for the answer. - install.ps1 sets $newInstall itself; a caller's variable or strict mode cannot reach it. scripts/install-star.test.ts runs install.sh whole, as `curl | sh` does, on a PATH of stand-ins, with and without a terminal. scripts/windows-install.test.ps1 runs gh as a stand-in process. ⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Close the PowerShell pipes or abandoning
ghcan still block the installer.
WaitForExit(10000)waits only for the process.$said.Resultblocks until stdout reaches EOF. Ifghexits but a child process it spawned still holds the inherited stdout handle,.Resultblocks with no time limit. This is less likely than the hang case, but the 10-second guarantee does not cover it. The timeout path also has a gap. It kills onlygh, not its process tree. IfKill()throws, thecatch { }hides that error. Before the code reads.Result, wait on the task with a time limit.Proposed fix

… and a gh that hangs is killed The question was asked wherever a terminal opened, after a flush that was optional: on a PC without perl, or when the flush failed, a "y" typed before the question answered it, and a background job that reached for the terminal was stopped by it with no 20 seconds to end that. Now perl is required for the question, one perl call checks the install is in the terminal's foreground group and empties what was typed, and either failing means no question. The question itself is written to the terminal it is read from, not to stdout. gh's 10 seconds were a single TERM from a watcher that outlived a quick call: the watcher now looks once a second and is reaped, and a gh that ignores TERM is killed two seconds later. Tests: a PC without perl with y typed ahead, a background job under a shell with job control, a gh that ignores TERM; the "nobody there" case measures the 20 seconds from the question itself. Each failed on the code before this (Codex findings 1, 2, 4, 5 and the Low). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…seconds, and a shim gh runs Read-Host after a first key waited without end for the Enter: the answer is now read key by key within 20 seconds in all, and a line left unfinished is no answer. gh's deadline covers its output as well as its exit (a child it handed the output to could live on), what outlasts it is killed with its children, and the process is disposed. A gh that is a .cmd or .bat shim runs through the command interpreter, so the test's stand-in reaches the installer's own launcher; the test now also asserts that the status read happened (Codex findings 3, 6, 7). …its output The status came through a pipe into sed: a gh that left a child holding its output would hold the pipe's reader past the deadline, and the install with it. The answer goes to a file now, read once gh_api has returned; a child that lives on keeps a descriptor to a removed file. The test's stand-in has a mode that leaves such a child (CodeRabbit). ## Change Prepares v0.4.0 and remote bundle 20. - `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`: 0.3.52 → 0.4.0. A minor bump: the chat's Send/Stop and queued follow-ups (#520), the sidebar redesign (#521, #556, #557, #559), the mobile key bar editor (#508), Settings one page at a time (#562), release notes before and after an update (#535, #560) and the installer's star offer (#550) change how the app is used. - `shared/machines.ts`: `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 19 → 20. #520, #508, #525 and #537 changed `server/`, so remote PCs need a new bridge; until a PC updates, Send during work keeps the draft and asks for the update. - `CHANGELOG.md`: the Unreleased notes become `[0.4.0] - 2026-10-08`, with the compare links; two stray blank lines inside the section removed; the #521 entry says a red question mark (#557), and the #535 and #560 entries say Settings → About (#562). - `release-summaries.json`: the first entry, 0.4.0 in English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese, seven lines under each of New features, Improvements and Bug fixes, which `Settings → About` and the header line show before and after the update installs. ## After the merge 1. `git tag remote-v20 <merge commit> && git push origin remote-v20` → the remote-bundles workflow publishes the five bundles and `manifest.json` as release `remote-v20`. 2. Only then `gh workflow run release.yml --ref main -f version=0.4.0`: preflight validates version, notes and summaries, CI runs on the exact commit, and the tag `v0.4.0` with its GitHub release is created. ## Validation - `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.0` prints the notes (version sources agree, one heading, summaries in all four languages). - `server/release-notes.test.ts` (this repository's summaries: every release since 0.3.52 told in four languages, lines ≤ 90 characters, the same lists in every language) and `scripts/release-notes.test.ts` pass. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
What
On a first install,
install.shmentions a GitHub star with a link. This lets the installer give that star when the user says so, and brings the same mention toinstall.ps1, which had none.gh api --include user/starred/devswha/herdr-web-ui), by the HTTP status GitHub answers with.star it now with the GitHub account gh is signed in to? Ctrl-C at the question ends the script with status 0.Checks
scripts/install-star.test.ts(unit suite): the wholeinstall.sh, run ascurl … | shruns it, on a PATH that holds only what it needs, with stand-ins for herdr, node and gh. Without a terminal: no gh, starred, not starred, a rerun, a gh that hangs. At a terminal (script(1), Linux):y, Enter,n,yy, end of input, typed-aheady, Ctrl-C, a refused star, a 403, a 500 whose text names a 404, no sign-in,CIset, and nobody answering. The file takes about 20 seconds, which is the question's own wait; its tests run side by side.install.shin turn (the INT trap, the typed-ahead discard, theCIcheck, the status match) makes the test for it fail.scripts/windows-install.test.ps1: gh is a stand-ingh.cmdfirst on PATH, run as a real process, so native stderr and exit codes cross the same boundary as in an install. Fixed ineaf9cdf(Unix) and40b4d6b(Windows), each with tests that fail on the code before them: a PC without perl withytyped ahead, a background job under a shell with job control, a gh that ignores TERM, the 20 seconds measured from the question itself; on Windows the answer is read key by key within one deadline, the shim runs throughcmd.exe, and the test asserts the status read happened.3700e6d..73afcb8: the High and five Medium are closed, the watcher cleanup is narrowed to Low (itssleep 1is briefly orphaned after a quick call; it identifies gh by PID), and one Medium stays for a follow-up, install.ps1: a shim gh's child that keeps the output pipe can outlive the 10-second deadline #558: a.cmdshim's child that keeps the stdout pipe can outlive the deadline, and the readers are not closed byDisposeon .NET Framework.
