Why

On a desktop every pane opens in its terminal; only an agent pane on a touch screen opens its chat. Someone who reads their agents as conversations has to switch each pane by hand, and every new pane starts in the terminal again.

Change

Settings → Chat → Panes open in: Auto / Chat / Terminal, for every pane on this device.

  • Auto is today's rule and the default.
  • Chat opens an agent pane's chat. A shell pane, which has no conversation, still opens its terminal.
  • Terminal always opens the terminal.
  • Choosing forgets each pane's remembered lens (herdr-web-ui:view:*), so the choice reaches every pane at once.
  • A pane switched by hand afterwards keeps its lens until the choice changes again.
  • A PC without terminal attach still opens chat, as before.

Strings are added for ko, ja and zh.

Validation

  • Unit (settings.test.ts): only known choices are kept, with auto as the default. forgetPaneViews removes every pane's lens and nothing else.
  • Browser (scripts/default-view-regression.ts, from test:ui), on a desktop page with two agent panes:
    • a pane opens its terminal by default;
    • after choosing Chat, the open pane and a pane that remembered the terminal both open their chat;
    • a pane switched back by hand keeps the terminal.
  • Typecheck passes.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

… auto

A pane opened in its terminal on a desktop (and its chat only for an agent on a touch
screen), and the only way to read every pane as a chat was to switch each one by hand.
Settings > Chat > Panes open in now chooses for every pane on the device: Auto (as before),
Chat (an agent pane opens its chat; a shell, with no conversation, its terminal) or
Terminal. Choosing forgets what each pane remembered, so the choice reaches every pane at
once; a pane switched by hand afterwards keeps its lens until the choice changes again.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a “Panes open in” setting to choose whether panes default to Auto, Chat, or Terminal.
    • When Chat is selected, panes open in Chat if an agent is available; otherwise, they open in Terminal. Auto retains automatic view selection.
    • Changing the setting clears saved pane-view preferences. Manually selected views persist when switching panes.

Walkthrough

Adds an Auto, Chat, or Terminal pane-view setting. Changing it clears saved per-pane views. Pane selection uses the configured default, and browser regression coverage checks the behavior.

Changes

Default pane view

Layer / File(s) Summary
Default view preference and saved-view cleanup
src/lib/settings.ts, src/lib/settings.test.ts
Adds the defaultView preference with auto, chat, and terminal values. Invalid values fall back to auto. forgetPaneViews removes stored pane-view keys while preserving other settings, and tests cover these cases.
Setting control and pane view selection
src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/App.tsx, src/lib/i18n.*.ts
Adds Auto, Chat, and Terminal choices. Changing the setting clears saved pane views. Pane selection uses the configured default, while retaining the existing touch-screen heuristic for Auto. Adds Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese translations.
Browser regression coverage
scripts/default-view-regression.ts, scripts/ui-regression.ts
Adds and runs a browser check for initial view selection, applying Chat to both panes, clearing a saved view, preserving a manual Terminal selection across pane switches, and resource cleanup.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddd0e

The setting appears to work, but the browser check does not protect the remembered-pane case it claims to cover. Correct that fixture as a bounded follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 241be

The change selects between existing pane views and preserves the existing terminal capability check. Storage failures can leave inconsistent pane choices, but no new access or privilege was identified in the reviewed paths. Broader authorization behavior was outside this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The preference reset reaches remembered lenses for all matching panes in the browser origin’s storage, including different machine identities. Its observed mutation scope is presentation state; the cleanup prefix excludes the settings record and does not select credentials or server-owned workspace state.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected default-view path adds no credential, role, route, or authority-bearing input to terminal attachment or chat submission. It chooses between existing manually selectable lenses rather than establishing a new privileged attack path. The canonical Security section contains no retained findings, but its unknown coverage does not establish safety outside these paths.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The preference is constrained to a closed set of values, remembered lenses are accepted only as chat or terminal, and terminalAttach is checked before either preference is consumed. No new server-side identity or authorization decision is introduced by the selector.

Seed the key that storedView reads.

forgetPaneViews removes every key beginning with herdr-web-ui:view:, including the incorrect herdr-web-ui:view:local:${pane} key. The current assertion therefore passes when that incorrect key is removed. It does not verify that the genuine local-pane key is cleared.

Seed and assert herdr-web-ui:view:${pane} instead.

Suggested fix
- localStorage.setItem(`herdr-web-ui:view:local:${pane}`, "terminal"); // a pane that remembered the terminal
+ localStorage.setItem(`herdr-web-ui:view:${pane}`, "terminal"); // a pane that remembered the terminal
...
-    assert.equal(await page.evaluate((pane) => localStorage.getItem(`herdr-web-ui:view:local:${pane}`), two), null, "what a pane remembered gives way to the choice");
+    assert.equal(await page.evaluate((pane) => localStorage.getItem(`herdr-web-ui:view:${pane}`), two), null, "what a pane remembered gives way to the choice");

Reviewed default-view selection, existing per-pane overrides, shell fallback, no-terminal-attach behavior, storage failure handling, and settings reset. Resolved the main conflict by keeping both reconnect and default-view browser checks, and added the changelog entry. Typecheck and 39 focused tests pass; both required CI jobs pass on this exact head.

Bumps package.json and herdr-plugin.toml to 0.3.44, moves the Unreleased
notes under [0.3.44] - 2026-10-03, adds the compare link, and removes a
merge marker line left in CHANGELOG.md by #351's conflict resolution.
### Added
- Native Windows x64 installation through `install.ps1`, with the same
herdr plugin startup
and updates. Windows needs Bun and Git, without Node or WSL, and keeps
using the terminal
screen mirror. ([#330](#330)
by @JJLiebig)
- Settings can choose Chat, Terminal, or Auto as the default view for
panes. Changing it resets
remembered pane views on this device. Shell panes still open in
Terminal.
([#325](#325) by
@Haeminway1)
- Choose the terminal input line or direct typing on desktop as well as
touch screens, and
customize or unbind the app's Mod+Shift shortcuts with conflict checks
and reset.
  ([#334](#334))

### Changed
- In the sidebar's By workspace view, a workspace with one pane keeps
its numbered header and
can be folded, renamed and reordered from that header, just like a
workspace with several panes.
  ([#332](#332) by @beomq)
- The top usage panel shows larger percentages, remaining-capacity
colors and compact reset
countdowns with their local time. Expired reset times stay hidden until
fresh usage arrives.
([#336](#336) by
@Haeminway1)
- Pane titles that contain a directory show its last folder, and
matching workspace and folder
names appear once in the sidebar and command palette, including Windows
paths.
([#337](#337) by
@Haeminway1)
- In the sidebar's By workspace view, a pane row no longer repeats the
workspace its header names.
Its second line shows the folder only when neither the title nor the
workspace already says it.
  ([#358](#358))

### Fixed
- GJC conversations are resolved from the foreground process directory
when it differs from
the pane directory.
([#333](#333) by @Kinetic27)
- Direct terminal input preserves rapid IME commits when punctuation
arrives before composition
timers run, with a bounded xterm 5.5 backport and Korean final-consonant
regression checks.
Native Android/Gboard checks also fixed stale editor text after
Backspace breaking the next
Hangul word. Secret entry now refuses a held or unready attachment and
failed PTY writes.
  ([#334](#334))
- New session in the browser demo opens the new session instead of
leaving a blank page.
  ([#355](#355))
- Terminal input keeps multi-character IME commits and emoji while
disconnected, waits for the
attachment before sending keys, and reports input failures. Unsent input
lines survive pane,
lens and mode changes; late acknowledgements preserve replacement edits.
Composition keeps
its Enter and Send button, and terminal key-bar taps wait until it
finishes.
  ([#334](#334))
- The background tasks list stays below the app header on a short
screen, such as a phone held
  sideways, and scrolls inside the room above the message box.
  ([#354](#354))
- The mobile message box sits closer to the home indicator while
retaining its base spacing.
([#335](#335) by
@Haeminway1)
- Adding or reconnecting a remote PC says when herdr is not running or
not answering there,
  instead of only `Bridge verification failed (500)`.
  ([#353](#353))
- Shift+Enter in the live terminal sends the same newline chord as
Alt+Enter, instead of plain
Enter that submits an agent's message. Pending IME text is sent before
the newline chord.
([#339](#339) by
@WOULDU-pres)
- On Windows, and from an install path with a space or a non-ASCII
character, the app page loads
instead of the "not built yet" notice. The Windows installer replaces a
copy from a release
  without Windows support, and says so when a release cannot run there.
  ([#356](#356))
- On an iPhone home screen app, a text field that keeps its focus with
the keyboard down no
  longer leaves a status-bar band under the message box.
([#349](#349) by
@Haeminway1)
- After `/new` in an OmO pane, the chat stops showing the conversation
before it: OmO writes the
new session's file only with its first message, and until then the chat
shows what a fresh OmO
shows. ([#351](#351) by
@WOULDU-pres)
- On a Windows PC, an omo pane shows omo's mark instead of Claude's, and
its chat finds the
conversation: process words with `bun.exe`, backslashes and a drive
letter read as omo, and the
  session folder is named as omo's engine names a Windows folder.
([#342](#342) by
@Haeminway1)
- The chat lens finds an omo pane's conversation when its process keeps
its sessions outside
`~/.omo/agent` (`OMO_CODING_AGENT_DIR`, `SENPI_CODING_AGENT_DIR` or
`PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR`).
