Why

On a Windows PC, an omo pane shows the Claude mark (the agent SDK omo runs) instead of omo's. Its process words read like this:

C:\Users\me\.bun\bin\bun.exe  C:\Users\me\.bun\install\global\node_modules\@code-yeongyu\senpi\dist\bundle\cli.js  --extension  C:\…\node_modules\omo-ai\plugin

isOmoProcess rejects them for three reasons:

  • The runtime check wants a word ending in bun or node, not bun.exe or node.exe.
  • The program and extension checks want /, not \.
  • The PATH-list guard (word.includes(":")) takes the drive's colon for a list.

Change

  • Paths: process words are read as paths first. Backslashes become slashes, and a trailing .exe, .cmd or .bat is dropped, so bun.exe reads as bun and omo.cmd as omo. Words without either are untouched.
  • PATH-list guard: only a colon past a leading drive (C:/) counts as a list.
  • Unchanged: the rules themselves. It is still the program a runtime runs, and senpi counts only with omo-ai's plugin as an --extension before --.

Also: the chat's omo conversation on Windows

Once the pane reads as omo, its chat must find the session too. omo's engine names a cwd's session folder --<cwd with / \ and : as ->--. senpi's core/session-manager.js writes it like this:

`--${resolvedCwd.replace(/^[/\\]/, "").replace(/[/\\:]/g, "-")}--`

omo.ts used -${cwd.replaceAll("/", "-")}--. For a POSIX cwd both give the same folder, but for C:\Users\me\app it gave -C:\Users\me\app-- instead of --C--Users-me-app--. The chat found no conversation and fell back to the terminal output. omoSessionFolder now follows senpi's rule exactly.

Validation

omo.test.ts adds Windows cases:

  • the hoisted senpi run by bun.exe;
  • the MCP child;
  • node.exe running omo.js;
  • omo.cmd.

It also covers what must stay false:

  • bun.exe running another script;
  • a ;-separated PATH list;
  • a colon list in a shell's -c.

omoSessionFolder is tested on a POSIX cwd and on a Windows cwd written with either slash. All existing cases still pass. Typecheck passes; the unit tests pass except voice transcribe > streams deltas…, which fails the same on a clean main here.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

… drive's colon

On a Windows PC the pane's process words read C:\Users\me\.bun\bin\bun.exe and
C:\…\node_modules\…: the runtime check wanted a word ending in bun, the program checks wanted
slashes, and a drive's colon made the script read as a PATH list. omo was not recognized, and its
pane showed the Claude mark of the SDK it runs. The words are now read as paths first
(backslashes as slashes, .exe/.cmd/.bat dropped), and only a colon past a drive marks a list.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Windows compatibility for executable and script paths, including drive-letter paths and backslash separators.
    • Reduced incorrect recognition of unrelated commands as OmO processes, including shell commands and path lists.
    • Improved session-folder lookup for working directories with Windows-style paths and colons.
    • Fixed OmO panes on Windows so they display the OmO mark and open the correct conversation.

Walkthrough

The change updates OmO process detection to normalize Windows executable and script paths, identify runtime programs after flags, and reject path-list values. It adds cwd-based session-folder encoding for Windows and Unix paths, with tests for both behaviors.

Changes

Windows path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Process argument normalization and matching
server/omo.ts, server/omo.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md
Process detection normalizes Windows paths, skips leading runtime flags, and rejects path-list values. Extension matching stops at --. Tests cover Windows command paths and rejected inputs. The changelog records the Windows-specific fix.
Session-folder path encoding
server/omo.ts, server/omo.test.ts
omoSessionFolder replaces path separators and colons with dashes inside the folder name. sessionDir uses this encoding. Tests cover Unix and Windows cwd inputs.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in server/omo.ts: isOmoProcess now normalizes argv words before matching. For JS runtimes it finds the first non-flag program after the runtime, rejects missing programs and PATH-like program strings, and recognizes the existing omo and senpi entry points against normalized paths. Extension matching rejects PATH-like values and stops at --; previously argv was matched without Windows normalization, runtime selection did not skip leading flags correctly, colon checks rejected drive paths, and prompt-boundary lookup was based on the program's index.
  • observed — Modified behavior in server/omo.ts: Added windowsPath to normalize Windows separators and strip executable/script suffixes, plus isPathList to distinguish colon-separated lists from drive-letter paths. These helpers support the updated process and extension checks.
  • observed — Modified behavior in server/omo.ts: Added exported omoSessionFolder, which removes one leading slash or backslash and replaces remaining slashes, backslashes, and colons with dashes inside the --...-- folder name. sessionDir now uses this encoding instead of replacing only forward slashes and wrapping the result with a single leading dash.
  • observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Adds an Unreleased fix entry stating that Windows OmO panes are recognized from process names containing bun.exe, backslashes, and a drive letter, and that conversation lookup uses OmO’s Windows session-folder naming.

…mes their folder

omo's engine names a cwd's session folder --<cwd with slashes, backslashes and colons as
dashes>-- (senpi core/session-manager.js); the slash-only rule here gave -C:\Users\…-- for a
Windows cwd, so the chat found no conversation and showed only the terminal fallback.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Parse value-taking runtime options before selecting the OmO script.

On Windows, node.exe --require tsx <omo-entry> is a valid Node invocation. windowsPath normalizes node.exe to node, but at skips only flag words. It selects tsx as the script and returns false.

omoPanes then excludes the pane, and omoTranscriptsOfCwd does not create a runtime for it. OmO transcript lookup therefore returns no transcript path. Parse runtime options and their operands before selecting the script.

## Problem

An OmO pane showed fine in the terminal lens, but the chat lens showed
nothing. `GET /api/pane/conversation?pane_id=…` returned `200
{"source":"scrollback","turns":[]}`.

The pane's omo process was started by a launcher that gives each profile
its own state:

```
OMO_CODING_AGENT_DIR=~/.local/state/<profile>/.omo/agent
SENPI_CODING_AGENT_DIR=<same>
```

omo's engine (senpi, `config.js` `getAgentDir()` → `resolveAgentDir(cwd,
home, envValue("CODING_AGENT_DIR"))`) reads the first of `OMO_`,
`SENPI_` and `PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR` that is set. It keeps
`sessions/<cwd-slug>/*.jsonl` and `session-holders/` under that
directory. `server/omo.ts` only ever looked in `~/.omo/agent/sessions`,
which has no folder for that cwd. So no candidate or holder record was
found, `omoTranscriptForPane` returned null, and the route fell back to
an empty scrollback.

## Fix

- `omoAgentDir(environ, home, cwd)` resolves the agent directory the way
senpi does: the brand prefix first, then `SENPI_`, then `PI_`. If the
variable is set but empty, senpi keeps its default. `~` is expanded, and
a relative path resolves against the cwd.
- `processEnviron(pid)` reads `/proc/<pid>/environ`. Where that file
can't be read (macOS, Windows), the default `~/.omo/agent` is used as
before.
- `omoTranscriptsOfCwd` now resolves each omo process's own store. It
reads that process's holder records, its open-descriptor evidence and
its holder start time from that store. `omoCandidates` scans the default
store plus every store a process names. The store-containment check now
accepts any of these roots.

## Tests

- `server/omo.test.ts` has new tests:
- Agent-dir resolution: precedence, `~`, relative paths, and a
set-but-empty variable.
- A regression test that rebuilds the failing layout: a moved agent dir
with a holder record and an anonymised omo 5.1.10 transcript shape, and
no session under `~/.omo`. Without the environment the pane is unbound.
With it, the pane binds and `parseOmpTranscript` reads the turns.
- Checked against the live pane (process argv and environ from `/proc`):
the default store gives `null`; the process's store gives the session
with 18 turns.
- `bun run typecheck` passes. `bun test server/omo.test.ts
server/omo-status.test.ts server/conversation.test.ts` gives 68 pass.

Note: this touches the same `sessionDir` line as #342
(`omoSessionFolder`). Whichever PR merges second needs a one-line
rebase.

## Change

An OmO pane that has not been sent a message yet opens its chat on
"Conversation unavailable — show terminal output". That happens on every
new OmO pane and after every `/new`, so a working pane looks broken
until the first message.

OmO publishes its holder record (`session-holders/<id>/<pid>.json`) as
soon as it starts or runs `/new`. It writes the session file (`*.jsonl`)
only with the first message. In the session that found this, the holder
appeared at 15:45:41 and the file at 15:46:12, when the first message
was sent. During that gap no file names the held session, so
`/api/pane/conversation` answered `scrollback` and the chat showed the
terminal fallback.

#351 already stops the chat from showing the conversation from before
`/new`. It left this state as the fresh-OmO fallback and asked which
state the chat should show. This PR proposes an answer: an empty OmO
chat.

- `server/omo.ts`: when the one session a pane's OmO process holds has
no file in the store yet, `omoSessionForPane` reports it as `pending`.
It builds on #351's `heldRuntime`. The check reads the store's file
names directly, so the bounded candidate list cannot mistake an existing
file for a missing one. `omoTranscriptForPane` keeps its signature.
- `server/conversation.ts`: for such a pane, `paneConversation` returns
an empty `omo-transcript` (`turns: []`, `cursor: null`, `history_id:
"unwritten:<session id>"`) instead of throwing
`ConversationUnavailable`. The chat then shows its existing "No
conversation yet — say something below" state. The first message writes
the file, the `history_id` changes, and the chat loads that
conversation. Image and tool-output lookups still treat the pane as
having no transcript.
- `CHANGELOG.md`: entry under `[Unreleased]` → `### Fixed`.

## Validation

macOS (Apple silicon), herdr 0.9.3, Bun 1.4.2, omo-ai with the senpi
engine.

- **Real OmO, no message sent:** ran OmO in an owned, temporary
workspace and queried both servers before any message.
  - Release v0.3.43: `{"source":"scrollback","turns":[]}`
- This branch:
`{"source":"omo-transcript","turns":[],"metadata":{"model":null,"reasoning_effort":null},"cursor":null,"history_id":"unwritten:01a0fe94-…"}`
- An existing OmO pane whose session was already written read the same
on this branch.
- **Screenshots:** same pane, English UI, sidebar cropped out.

  | Before (v0.3.43) | After |
  | --- | --- |
|
![before](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nahwan-kim/herdr-web-ui/fix/omo-unwritten-session/docs/screenshots/omo-new-session/before.png)
|
![after](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nahwan-kim/herdr-web-ui/fix/omo-unwritten-session/docs/screenshots/omo-new-session/after.png)
|

- **Contract tests** in `server/omo.contract.test.ts`:
- `tells a held session omo has not written yet from an older one`: a
fresh pane, a pane whose launch `--session-id` names an older session
(as after `/new`), a file whose name only contains the held id, and the
pane resolving to its file once it is written.
- `serves a held omo session as an empty conversation until its file is
written`: over HTTP (`createServer`), the empty `omo-transcript` with
`history_id: "unwritten:<id>"`, 409 for a stale `before` cursor, then
the written transcript with a new `history_id`.
- Both pass. Each fails when its check is reverted (`pending` disabled,
the old `includes` name match, the `before` 409 removed).
- `bun run generate:types --check`, `bun run typecheck`, `bun run
build`: pass.
- `bun run test:unit`: 1057 passed, 4 skipped, 1 failed. The failure is
`server/pi.test.ts` "accepts a session file inside the store", which
also fails on `upstream/main` on macOS (`/var` vs `/private/var`
tmpdir).
- `server/omo.contract.test.ts` on macOS, run with `TMPDIR=$(realpath
$TMPDIR)`: 6 passed. Two tests fail the same way on `upstream/main`
because they read `/proc`.

### Not verified

- **First message with real OmO:** the switch from the empty chat to the
real conversation after the first message was not run end to end, since
it needs a model call. The contract test covers the file selection, and
the `history_id` change uses the chat's existing reset path.
- **Screenshot base:** the screenshots and the real-OmO check ran before
this branch was rebased onto #351, #342 and #350 (per-process agent
directories). The checks above were rerun on the rebased branch.
- **Linux and Windows:** not run.
