Why

Since #307 added New tab and Split, each pane row reserves room for up to four action buttons even while they are hidden (opacity: 0 keeps their width). Titles are cut to roughly half the row on a desktop. On a touch screen the buttons always show, and every row loses about 160px.

Change

The actions sit over the end of the row instead of beside the title.

On a mouse

  • They show on hover or keyboard focus, compact (26px), over a fade in the row's hover colour.
  • Four of them end short of the row's middle, so a click in the middle still opens the pane.
  • Only the buttons take a click; the fade does not.

On a touch screen

  • Only the selected row shows them.

Two traps avoided

  • Hover reveal sits behind (hover: hover), because a tap leaves a sticky :hover behind.
  • Focus reveal uses :has(:focus-visible), not :focus-within. Otherwise a click's own focus brings the buttons under the pointer between mousedown and click, and the click lands on New tab.

DESIGN.md is updated.

Validation

  • Before/after at 1280px: titles now get the row's whole width at rest (223px each). The right image shows the hover state.

    Rows at rest, and hovered

  • test:ui: 39 PASS, with the existing Control+Shift+ArrowUp leaves the pane step taken out (it fails on a clean main here too). That includes every sidebar click, the close confirm, and the phone drawer pick.

  • Two earlier attempts failed in that suite, which is how the two traps above were found: the fade catching clicks, and the click's own focus revealing buttons mid-click.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Since the sidebar gained New tab and Split (devswha#307), each pane row reserved room for four
action buttons even while they were hidden (opacity 0), so titles were cut to about half the
row on a desktop, and on a touch screen, where they always showed, every row lost ~160px.

The actions now sit over the end of the row instead of beside the title:
- on a mouse, they show on hover or keyboard focus, compact (26px), over a fade in the row's
own colour, and end short of the row's middle; only the buttons take a click, so the fade
  still opens the pane;
- on a touch screen, only the selected row shows them; a tap's leftover hover and a click's
focus no longer bring buttons under the pointer mid-click.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Sidebar pane rows now include new-tab and split actions alongside rename and close.
  • Improvements
    • Actions appear over the row’s right edge on hover, keyboard-visible focus, or while an action is armed, keeping the full row width available for pane titles.
    • The overlay remains clickable to open a pane, except where a button is present.
    • On touch or pen screens, actions appear only on the selected row.

Walkthrough

The roster specification adds new-tab and split actions alongside rename and close. Sidebar styles overlay actions on the row and control their visibility based on hover, focus, armed state, and pointer type.

The specification lists new-tab and split actions with rename and close. Styles place actions over the row, preserve the title’s full width, and control visibility and pointer interaction for hover, focus, armed actions, and selected rows on coarse-pointer devices.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in DESIGN.md: The roster row actions now include new tab and split, in addition to rename and the existing three-second, second-click close. They appear on hovered or focused rows, or only the selected row on touch screens, without reserving row space; titles retain the full width and inline server failures remain beside their row.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/components/Sidebar.css: .pane-actions changes from an in-flow flex element to an absolute overlay at the row’s right edge with a hover-background gradient. Visibility is enabled by hover-capable pointer hover, keyboard-visible focus, or an armed action; pointer events are enabled only for the action buttons. Non-coarse pointers get smaller unarmed buttons. The former general :focus-within visibility rule is replaced by :focus-visible targeting, and the overlay’s remaining area does not intercept clicks.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/components/Sidebar.css: The coarse-pointer rule no longer makes .pane-actions visible unconditionally; it continues to show the drag handle and workspace rename control.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/components/Sidebar.css: Adds a no-hover or coarse-pointer rule that displays actions and enables their pointer events only on the selected pane row.

Thanks for catching this so quickly: the hidden actions taking room from the title is exactly what changed the rows in 0.3.42.

The maintainer decided to go further and drop the two buttons that caused it. #327 (merged) removes the sidebar's new tab and split buttons and their endpoints, and puts the rows back as they were in 0.3.41, so the row is down to its two old actions and this branch no longer applies cleanly. The overlay idea is still a good one if row actions grow again; I'm leaving the PR open for the maintainer to decide.

The overlay improves title space, but it also overlays the inline rename field. I reproduced the regression against the current main styles in an isolated browser fixture; please preserve the editing area before merging.

[P2] Keep the action overlay clear of the rename field. The rename input still fills .pane-select, and focusing it matches .pane-item:has(:focus-visible), so the absolutely positioned actions stay over the input while editing. Once a name is long enough to scroll, its caret and final characters sit under the Close button; clicking there operates the action instead of placing the caret. With the exact PR CSS and the current two-button row, I measured the input ending at x318 and the overlay starting at x246 (72px overlap); main reserves action space and has no overlap. Please hide the overlay while .pane-rename-input is present, or otherwise reserve enough space for the input during editing.

Closing: #327 put the pane rows back without the New tab and Split buttons, so the rows no longer reserve room for them and the title has its width again. Thanks for the fix; if a row still cuts its title short on your screen after v0.3.44, please reopen with a screenshot.
