fix(chat): keep a wheel up made while a long chat first lands at its end - #2735
A long chat's first open goes to its newest message with LegendList's scrollToEnd, which lands a frame or more later. ChatView's short-landing fix (stoppedShort) also asks the list for it. A reader who wheels up inside that window moved the view up, then the list's queued scroll landed and put them back at the end.
Upward reading input (a wheel up, ArrowUp / PageUp / Home / Shift+Space, a touch drag down) now drops any scroll the list still has queued (dropPendingListScroll), the same call the chat already makes once a scroll event shows the reader left the end. Input that does not move the view up drops nothing it would otherwise keep: the next layout change re-queues a follow while the reader is still following.
Like the Codex and Claude apps, a reader's scroll up wins over the app's own move to the end.
Repro and regression test
scripts/chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts gets a case for the issue's setup: the long chat at a 478 px pane, a deltaY -120 wheel and a 120 px move up dispatched right after ChatView's first write to the drawn transcript's end, before that write's scroll event. It then waits until the view and the transcript's height hold still for 20 frames and requires the view to stay at least 100 px from the end.
origin/main 0e92eac0: settles 0 px from the end in 5 of 5 runs.
This branch: stays 120 px from the end in 5 of 5 runs (input as the next task), and in 3 of 3 with the move made in a microtask, before the frame's scroll event.
I first also set lastScrollTop after the stoppedShort write, as the issue suggests. The test passes without it in both timings, so this PR leaves it out.
Validation
bun scripts/chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts: all cases pass (75 PASS lines), including the new one.
bun run check fast: workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit tests (11043 pass, 0 fail) all ok.
Not run locally: the rest of the integration and browser lanes, native Windows, iOS. No HTTP/WS contract, dependency or stored-format change.

In long conversations, scrolling upward during the initial load now keeps the view at your chosen reading position instead of jumping back to the newest message. This applies to wheel, touch, and keyboard scrolling, making it easier to start reading older messages while the conversation is still settling.
During a long chat’s first open, upward input could be overridden by a queued jump to the end. ChatView now cancels a pending timeline scroll on upward keyboard, wheel, or touch input. A browser regression scenario tests wheel input during the initial jump.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d12af
The change addresses the initial scrolling race but leaves bounded cases where a chat can remain at the top or later return the reader to the end. Merge risk is low, with these scrolling limitations requiring owner awareness and follow-up.

Explanation
Issue #2594 requires an upward reader action during the long chat first-open jump to remain away from the end. ChatView.tsx now calls dropPendingListScroll for wheel-up, upward keyboard, and downward touch-drag input. The new QA case uses a 478 px pane, injects the wheel before the write's scroll event, waits for stable frames, and requires at least 100 px from the end. The change also preserves the existing input timestamp behavior.

Codex MEDIUM 2 (ArrowUp on a focused button, e.g. Jump to latest, cancelled a queued jump): fixed. Keys no longer drop the list's queued scroll; only a wheel or touch drag up the transcript does, and the key's scroll event still decides as before.
Codex MEDIUM 3 (wheel up over the minimap kept the original race): fixed. minimapWheel now drops the queued scroll on a wheel up as the transcript's own wheel does.
Codex MEDIUM 1 (the reader stays marked as following after the wheel, so the next update pulls them back): not reproduced. The QA case now also requires Jump to latest to show after the wheel. It passes with the wheel delivered as the next task (2/2) and in a microtask before the first-open write's scroll event (2/2).
Codex: two MEDIUMs from code reading, not reproduced; left for the merge pass, no follow-up issue:
A small wheel up (for example 20 px) during a first-open correction that moved the view down further may still read as a net move down and leave the chat following. A view 20 px from the end is within the 48 px layout allowance that already counts as following.
A wheel up that cannot move the transcript (already at its top) right after Jump to latest drops that queued jump.
No HIGH in either round. This lane stops here, per its one-extra-round limit.

Keep a wheel up during a long chat's first-open write from leaving follow on.
readingUp drops the queued list scroll but leaves lastScrollTop.current at the position from before the write. If the stopped-short write at src/components/ChatView.tsx:2126-2128 moves the view further than the upward input moves it, the view after that input is still below the stale baseline. onScroll classifies that event as scrollingDown. byReader then skips the held-in-place and stopped-short branches, leftEnd stays false, and stickToBottom.current stays true while the reader is above the end.
ChatView passes that flag to ChatTimeline as following. A later answer, footer, or measured-row change then runs the follow path (onLoad, footer growth, or followMeasured) and scrolls the reader to the end.
The first-open case in scripts/chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts:238-301 cannot detect this. Its gap assertion accepts 120 px, which the stuck state also produces. The case also has no later conversation update. Add a step that triggers a later conversation update after the wheel input and asserts that the gap stays at least 100 px.

Non-moving upward input cancels a queued first-open landing.
readingUp drops the list's queued scroll on every ArrowUp, PageUp, Home, Shift+Space, upward wheel, and touch drag down. This happens even when the view does not move. If the first-open follow is still queued at the top, that input cancels it. The follow is not queued again until a later layout change, such as a row size change. The chat can therefore stay at the top instead of landing on the newest message. This conflicts with the stated behavior that input which does not move the view drops nothing it would otherwise keep.
Do not move this drop into the onScroll handler. Upward input moves the view before its scroll event fires. A follow queued before that input can land first and return the reader to the end, which is the race #2594 describes. A correction must still cancel the queued follow before the move, or otherwise prevent that landing. The inspected code does not establish a safe alternative.

Review comment at @src/components/ChatView.tsx around lines 1989 - 1992:
Update readingUp so upward input that does not move the view preserves the
queued first-open follow, while input that moves the view cancels it before the
scroll can land. Establish a safe way to distinguish those outcomes without
moving dropPendingListScroll into the onScroll handler; retain the existing
protection against the queued follow returning the reader to the end.
Cover the keyboard and touch branches during a pending first-open jump.
The new first-open case in scripts/chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts dispatches only a wheel event. ChatView.tsx also drops the pending list scroll for ArrowUp, PageUp, Home, Shift+Space, and an upward touchmove. The settled input loop delivers that pending scroll before each input, so none of these branches runs while a jump is pending. The browser QA script would still report PASS if those branches were removed.
Add pending-state cases for the distinct branches:
ArrowUp keydown. Shift+Space covers the compound key === " " && shiftKey check. PageUp and Home share the same call and condition shape, so they are optional.
Touch drag. Dispatch touchstart first so touchY is set. Then dispatch touchmove with a larger clientY. A lone touchmove does nothing.
Each case needs its own fresh first-open jump. Key events do not scroll the element, so each case must also move the view by -120 px, as the wheel case does. Assert the same ≥100 px gap.
Suggested direction
Repeat the pending first-open case for ArrowUp, Shift+Space, and a touch drag. Start each touch drag with touchstart, then touchmove. Move the view by -120 px after each input. Assert that the reader stays at least 100 px from the end.

…reload (#2747)
## Summary
`scripts/settings-unload-regression.ts:42` timed out on PR CI (#2732,
#2735). It reproduces on origin/main in isolation, so it is not only
load: three causes stacked up.
1. **Product (preferencesSync.ts `takePreferences`)**: while a save was
in flight, a value changed back here was measured against the old
baseline, not against the change on its way. Turning a switch on, then
off before the server's answer, made that answer (on) overwrite the
local off. The muted panes already compared against the in-flight
change; settings and pins now do too.
2. **Product (reload)**: Chromium sometimes drops the keepalive `PUT
/api/preferences` sent at `pagehide` during a reload. A Chromium net-log
of a failing run shows `fetch` was called (keepalive) but no request
ever reached the network stack. The unsent change is now also left in
`sessionStorage`; the reloaded tab treats each value still held as it
went as its own edit and sends it again, but only when the server's
revision has not moved past what the leaving page knew (a newer save
from another browser wins).
3. **Test**: line 41 passed an async predicate to
`page.waitForFunction`; the returned Promise is truthy, so it never
waited. It now waits on the server's event stream for the document
holding the last value (bounded 5s, no fixed sleep).
## Validation
- Failing-first: the new `takePreferences` unit test and the new hook
test ("the reloaded page sends it again") fail on origin/main's
`preferencesSync.ts` and pass with the fix.
- `bun test src/lib/preferencesSync.test.ts
src/lib/preferencesSync.hook.test.ts`: 70 pass.
- Browser regression on a built bundle, isolated server (mkdtemp state,
port 0): before the fix about 9/64 failed at 8 parallel; after it 64/64
at 8 parallel and 96/96 at 12 parallel.
- `bun run check fast`: ok (typecheck, build, 11077 unit pass).
- Not run: `bun run check full` (CI runs it).
…hat follow fix (#61)
## What
Four interface changes and a chat scroll fix, in one PR because CI here is long.
- Browse and Changes can stay beside the pane, as a right sidebar, instead of a popup. A new "File browser" setting under Settings > Chat > File viewer sets it, separately from where individual files open. The docked browser spans the full window height, resizes by dragging its left edge (width kept per device), and its Close replaces the Files and More buttons above it. Narrow windows still use the popup.
- The Chat/Terminal switch moves out of the header into the More menu as a switch. The shortcut and per-pane choice are unchanged.
- The chat keeps following the latest message when a turn starts. When a turn began, the footer's Working line was replaced by the turn's own head, which shortened the page by about 14 to 34px with no input. The scroll handler read that as the reader scrolling away and turned follow off, so streamed text stopped scrolling and the jump arrow appeared.
- Three upstream chat fixes are picked in: devswha#2729 (no Working head under an answer while the status lags), devswha#2735 (keep a wheel-up made while a long chat first lands) and devswha#2742 (keep a Claude turn working until its answer is read).
The file sidebar follows VS Code's Source Control sidebar and Zed's Git panel, where the list stays visible while a file or diff is open. The Terminal switch is built like the Alerts item already in More. Both are written up in DESIGN.md.
## Worth a close look
- `src/components/ChatView.tsx`: the follow fix stamps the footer shrink when React commits it, and counts an upward scroll within 150ms of that stamp with no wheel, touch or key input as layout, not the reader. Everything else about telling a reader's scroll from a layout move is unchanged.
- `src/components/FilesDialog.css`: the docked browser uses a negative top margin to reach through the app header. The header's right edge is held back by the same width, so nothing draws behind it.
- The `.row-menu-switch-track` rename in `RowMenu` exists because the first version of the Terminal switch reused `.row-menu-toggle`, the class of the sidebar's three-dot buttons, and boxed them. Scripts that clicked the old class are updated.
- The long-chat reload test `chat-virtual-browser-qa` fails the same way on clean `main`, so it is not caused here.
## Verified
- `bun run check fast` passes on the final commit.
- Browser regressions for the file viewer and the header switch pass, including the full-height browser at several widths and the docked list filling its height.
- The follow fix is checked against a recorded trace from the affected browser: with the fix, follow never dropped, no jump arrow, streaming followed. I could not reproduce the original in a synthetic page, so there is no test that fails without the fix.
- Deployed to the VPS preview and used by hand.
- Not run: full CI and the native Windows install check, skipped on purpose because of their length.
## Notes
- The Working line staying visible while words stream, and lingering at the end of a turn on a phone, is not fixed here. On desktop the line cleared 146ms after the last word. The next PR merges upstream and takes its fixes first.
- The remote screen audio and fullscreen-only key capture changes live in the orchestrator repo, not here.
