fix(chat): no Working head under an answer while the status lags - #2729
Fixes#2592. This is a follow-up to #2551: a pending "Working…" head showed under a finished answer in two cases.
The status trails the answer by more than 800 ms. The head waited a fixed 800 ms (ANSWER_STATUS_LAG_MS) after an answer drawn while herdr still said working. A slower status catch-up showed the head anyway.
Two turns with the same start time. The 800 ms wait was keyed by the answered turn's ts, so a next turn read in already finished with the same ts reused the expired timer and showed the head at once.
src/components/ChatView.tsx:
The answered turn is now named by its row slot key (stable per row, distinct for each turn), not by ts.
The head under an answer needs evidence of a new turn: the pane was seen at rest (any status but working) under that answered row, then works again. A status still trailing the answer, however long, never had that rest, so it shows no head. The 800 ms wait still applies after the evidence, so a new turn's first row can bring its own head without a flash.
A send from this browser is unchanged: its head shows at once.
Trade-off: opening a chat (or reloading) while the agent is already working over a turn that ended on its answer shows no pending head until the new turn's first row arrives, because no rest was seen under that answer. Before, the head showed after 800 ms there. Telling that case apart from a status lag needs the same evidence, and the issue asks for evidence, not expiry.
Reference app: the Codex app. Its working state belongs to the turn in progress, and a finished turn never shows one. The DESIGN.md work block entry now describes the rest-then-work rule.
Only idle and done count as a rest: blocked (waiting on the user) or unknown says nothing about the status catching up with the answer.
Also changed: scripts/chat-working-line-demo-regression.ts gains both cases from the issue (answers that share a ts, and an answer drawn 1.5 s before the pane rests) and an answer drawn while the pane was blocked, then working for 1.5 s. docs/development.md describes them. Changelog fragment: changelog.d/chat-working-head-status-lag.md.
bun scripts/chat-working-line-demo-regression.ts on main fails at "no Working head stands under a turn read in already finished, after the last one's wait ran out" ([["Working…"]]), which is case 2.
With that assertion turned into a log, the new case 1 check fails on main at "no Working head stands under an answer while a status lag outlasts the wait" (Working…).
With this PR, all 6 checks pass, in 3 of 3 runs (the blocked case failed on the first head, 783c30b, before the second commit).
bun run check run --build bun scripts/chat-browser-qa.ts: passes.
bun scripts/chat-fallback-browser-qa.ts: passes.
bun test src/lib/workBlocks.test.ts scripts/conventions.test.ts src/conventions.test.ts scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts: 83 pass.
bun run typecheck: clean.
bun run check fast: green at the head (unit: 11043 pass, 0 fail, 43 skip; typecheck, build, generated types/themes, workflow syntax ok).
Not run: bun run check full, native Windows/Mac checks (no platform-specific code).
…der it
A status trailing the answer by more than 800 ms, or a next turn read in
with the same start time, showed a pending Working head under a finished
answer. The head now needs the pane seen at rest under that answered row
(named by its row slot, not its ts) before it counts as a new turn.

Bug Fixes
Prevented a “Working…” indicator from appearing beneath a completed answer when status updates arrive late or the next turn shares the same timestamp.
The indicator now waits until the chat has returned to a resting state before appearing for a new turn.
ChatView now waits for rest evidence under an answer row before treating a later working status as a new turn. The regression script covers delayed status updates and assistant turns with matching timestamps.
Changes: Working head status lag

Summary
Track rest evidence under answer rows src/components/ChatView.tsx, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/chat-working-head-status-lag.md
ChatView records the answer row observed while work status is not working. It starts the 800 ms delay only after that row has been seen at rest, and excludes the finishedBeforeSend turn. The design and changelog describe the updated timing behavior.
Cover delayed status and matching timestamps scripts/chat-working-line-demo-regression.ts, docs/development.md
The regression script adds assistant turns with a shared timestamp and checks that a 1.5-second status lag does not show a Working footer under the answer. The development guide lists the added case.
Issue 2550 describes a pending Working head before the pane shows its rows and a finished answer reopening before a new row. This change requires rest evidence under the answer and preserves the 800 ms delay, addressing those behaviors. It does not cover the issue’s answer-gap and /clear behaviors.

The change is mergeable with a small test follow-up: assert that the Working indicator appears before the dusted turn finishes, so the regression test cannot pass by suppressing it entirely.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2592 requires no Working… head under an answer when status lags beyond 800 ms or when consecutive turns share a timestamp. ChatView.tsx keys the answered turn by its row key and requires a recorded non-working rest under that row before it starts the lag timer. This blocks a trailing status and separates turns with equal timestamps. The regression script covers both cases, including a 1.5 second lag.

Add a positive wait for the Working head on the dusted turn.
Dust shelf c. is a user turn with no answer yet. Before its answer, the chat shows a Working… head under it. The section waits only for the text, and its later checks read only frames that contain the answer. A build that never shows this head still passes. The earlier positive wait runs on an answered turn, so it does not cover this case.

An answer drawn while herdr still said blocked (an approval answered),
then working for longer than the head's wait, showed a Working head
under it. Only idle and done now count as the pane at rest under it.
Fixed a reproduced MEDIUM from the Codex review in 6df777c: an answer drawn while herdr still said blocked (an approval answered), then working for longer than 800 ms, showed a Working head under it, because any non-working status counted as a rest. Only idle and done count now. The demo regression has the case (red on 783c30b, green now, 3/3).
The other Codex MEDIUM (opening Chat while a new turn the agent began by itself has no row yet shows no pending head until its first row) is the trade-off described in the PR body and is unchanged.
CodeRabbit reviewed 783c30b (no review threads) and skipped 6df777c. Not waiting for it: the omo review at 6df777c is CLEAR, and the Codex adversarial review's two MEDIUMs are handled as described above.
Merge note: merged on the omo review (CLEAR at d853143 after merging main with #2735), Codex Terra (reproduced MEDIUM fixed; the other is a documented trade-off) and green checks. CodeRabbit skipped this head.
…hat follow fix (#61)
## What
Four interface changes and a chat scroll fix, in one PR because CI here is long.
- Browse and Changes can stay beside the pane, as a right sidebar, instead of a popup. A new "File browser" setting under Settings > Chat > File viewer sets it, separately from where individual files open. The docked browser spans the full window height, resizes by dragging its left edge (width kept per device), and its Close replaces the Files and More buttons above it. Narrow windows still use the popup.
- The Chat/Terminal switch moves out of the header into the More menu as a switch. The shortcut and per-pane choice are unchanged.
- The chat keeps following the latest message when a turn starts. When a turn began, the footer's Working line was replaced by the turn's own head, which shortened the page by about 14 to 34px with no input. The scroll handler read that as the reader scrolling away and turned follow off, so streamed text stopped scrolling and the jump arrow appeared.
- Three upstream chat fixes are picked in: devswha#2729 (no Working head under an answer while the status lags), devswha#2735 (keep a wheel-up made while a long chat first lands) and devswha#2742 (keep a Claude turn working until its answer is read).
The file sidebar follows VS Code's Source Control sidebar and Zed's Git panel, where the list stays visible while a file or diff is open. The Terminal switch is built like the Alerts item already in More. Both are written up in DESIGN.md.
## Worth a close look
- `src/components/ChatView.tsx`: the follow fix stamps the footer shrink when React commits it, and counts an upward scroll within 150ms of that stamp with no wheel, touch or key input as layout, not the reader. Everything else about telling a reader's scroll from a layout move is unchanged.
- `src/components/FilesDialog.css`: the docked browser uses a negative top margin to reach through the app header. The header's right edge is held back by the same width, so nothing draws behind it.
- The `.row-menu-switch-track` rename in `RowMenu` exists because the first version of the Terminal switch reused `.row-menu-toggle`, the class of the sidebar's three-dot buttons, and boxed them. Scripts that clicked the old class are updated.
- The long-chat reload test `chat-virtual-browser-qa` fails the same way on clean `main`, so it is not caused here.
## Verified
- `bun run check fast` passes on the final commit.
- Browser regressions for the file viewer and the header switch pass, including the full-height browser at several widths and the docked list filling its height.
- The follow fix is checked against a recorded trace from the affected browser: with the fix, follow never dropped, no jump arrow, streaming followed. I could not reproduce the original in a synthetic page, so there is no test that fails without the fix.
- Deployed to the VPS preview and used by hand.
- Not run: full CI and the native Windows install check, skipped on purpose because of their length.
## Notes
- The Working line staying visible while words stream, and lingering at the end of a turn on a phone, is not fixed here. On desktop the line cleared 146ms after the last word. The next PR merges upstream and takes its fixes first.
- The remote screen audio and fullscreen-only key capture changes live in the orchestrator repo, not here.
