feat(relay): pair a phone without a code by comparing six digits - #2696
A phone can pair through the relay without a pairing code. Under the QR code, Copy a link without a code gives a link (server id, public key, relay; nothing secret, no expiry) to send to the phone any way at all. The phone and the PC then show the same six digits, and the pairing finishes only when both the phone says "The numbers match" and the owner approves on the PC. The result is the same relay device record and key a pairing with a code makes. QR pairing is unchanged.
Design note: docs/relay.md, "Pairing by comparing digits" (under Who gets in), plus the new frames and error rows.
Protocol (commit, then reveal)
Feature-negotiated: the phone offers pair-sas in HELLO, and a PC that supports it selects it in WELCOME. An older phone never offers it. With an older PC the phone stops at the update screen. Nothing changes for either.
Both ends compute a channel binding: SHA-256 over a domain, the PC's static key and the two Noise handshake messages (channelBinding in shared/relay-e2ee.ts, recorded by the carrier guard; the vendored code is untouched). A relay that answers the phone with its own key runs two handshakes, so the two ends hold different bindings.
PAIR_REVEAL (phone): Np. The PC checks the commitment in constant time and ends the session with auth_failed if it fails.
Both show H(digits-domain ‖ binding ‖ device key ‖ Np ‖ Nc) mod 10^6.
PAIR_CONFIRM (phone) + owner approval (POST /api/relay/pairing), both required before AUTH_OK.
The phone is bound to Np before it sees Nc, and the PC picks Nc before it sees Np, so no single party, the relay included, can choose the digits. A relay that passes the frames through unchanged is refused at step 4. One that runs its own comparison with each end gets matching digits once in 10^6 tries.
Limits: 90 s from PAIR_REQUEST (under the relay's 120 s idle close), then timeout and the prompt is withdrawn. At most 3 phones wait at once. Every comparison that ends without a device counts toward the existing 20-failures-per-10-minutes relay pairing limit. The relay learns nothing new: everything travels inside the E2EE channel, so it sees only frame sizes and timing.
UI
PC: a notice line in every window that may approve one (driving, direct connection, not a Portal visitor, not through the relay): "{name} wants to pair through the relay. Approve it only if its screen shows 123 456" with Approve / Decline. It is delivered as relay-pairings on /api/machines/events.
Phone (hosted shell): "Does {name} show this number?" with the digits, The numbers match, then a wait for approval. A decline or timeout shows "{name} did not approve this phone", and no key is saved.
Follows Bluetooth numeric comparison (iOS/macOS "Does this code match?"): the same digits on both screens, a positive confirmation on each, nothing typed.
Screenshots (before/after, 390 + 1280, dark + light) are linked in the lane report for the owner's review.
Tests
server/relay/pair-sas.contract.test.ts (real RelaySession over real Noise channels): happy path, PC approval alone or phone confirmation alone does not pair, feature not offered, decline, approval of unknown or already decided ids (incl. HTTP 404/400), broken commitment, replayed and out-of-order frames, a commitment and reveal replayed into another connection, deadline (TestClock) withdraws the prompt, phone leaving withdraws it, cap of 3, and two MITM relays: a pass-through one is refused, and a rewriting one shows the owner different digits.
src/lib/relay/channel.test.ts: the phone's real openRelayChannel against the real PC session, approve → device saved; decline → no key saved, pair-declined screen.
At head 67d56b7 (origin/main merged, including the typecheck fix#2693):
bun run check fast: all green (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests 10901 pass / 0 fail).
Relay suites: bun test src/lib/relay shared/relay-mux*.test.ts shared/relay-e2ee.spike.test.ts shared/relay-pair-sas.test.ts server/relay relay server/devices.test.ts: 799 pass.
Manual: a local Bun relay + createServer + dist-shell in Chromium, with no production relay: a codeless link → compare → PC prompt (also with Settings open: Approve is the topmost element) → match → decline, at 390/1280 in dark and light.
Skipped: check integration browser / scripts/relay-e2e-regression.ts (needs the full browser lane).
Reviews: omo + Codex Terra (xhigh); findings and resolutions are in the PR comments.
A phone with only the PC's public key (a link without a code) pairs by a
commit-then-reveal comparison bound to the Noise handshake: both screens
show the same six digits, and the pairing finishes only when the phone
confirms and the owner approves on the PC. Feature-negotiated with
pair-sas; QR pairing is unchanged.

New Features
Pair a phone through the relay without entering a pairing code: copy a link, compare the six-digit numbers shown on both screens, and confirm the match on the phone.
Review relay pairing requests on the PC and approve or decline them.
Existing code-based pairing remains available.
Bug Fixes
Pairing stops if the numbers do not match, approval is declined, or the request times out.
Documentation
Added guidance for code-free relay pairing and its approval flow.
Adds code-free relay pairing through a shareable link and channel-bound six-digit comparison. Pairing completes after phone confirmation and PC-owner approval. The change adds relay protocol and server handling, approval prompts, phone UI states, tests, and documentation.
Changes: Code-free pairing protocol and server admission
Adds pairing frames and feature negotiation, validates pairing payloads, records protected handshake messages for channel binding, and derives commitments and six-digit comparison values.
Relay-side pairing and admission server/relay/session.ts, server/relay/pairing-approvals.ts, server/devices.ts, server/relay/link.ts, server/relay/pair-sas.contract.test.ts, docs/relay.md
Adds pairing states and approval requests. Device admission requires phone confirmation and owner approval. The flow handles revocation, timeouts, pending-request limits, and relay failure counting.

Adds code-free link requests and owner decision endpoints. Eligible machine event streams carry pending relay requests to the PC prompt, which submits approval or decline decisions.
Adds the phone’s codeless pairing exchange and comparison callback. The relay shell displays the digits, waits for confirmation, and reports decline or timeout outcomes.
devswha/ovis#2603: Updates phone relay pairing to use relay offers and shareable links, the same pairing path extended here.
devswha/ovis#2504: Adds the relay service, routes, offers, and session that this change extends.
devswha/ovis#2509: Adds the hosted-shell relay client and transport extended here with comparison messages.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review f8421
The change has bounded edge-case risks: an old retry can replace a newer pairing attempt, some prompts or failure messages can become misleading, and delayed timeout handling can accept a late confirmation. Mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up; correcting these issues and the rare test flake would improve readiness.

A PC endpoint could admit a comparing phone right after its reveal, so
the phone saved that endpoint without its person confirming the digits.
Admission now needs PAIR_CONFIRM sent first. The PC also checks the
relay pairing pause again before showing a prompt.
… a comparison
A phone with a saved key that scans a new QR code is given a new device
id, which the phone refused since the codeless change. An approved
comparison also no longer cancels a pairing code still on screen.

Status
HIGH
The phone accepted AUTH_OK right after its reveal, before its person tapped The numbers match, so a hostile PC endpoint could make the phone save it without a comparison (the real PC was not exposed: it still needs the owner's approval).
Reproduced with a fake PC endpoint, fixed in bfb46ba: AUTH_OK before PAIR_CONFIRM is a protocol_error. Test: src/lib/relay/channel.test.ts "does not take AUTH_OK from a PC before this phone said the digits match" (fails without the fix). Codex re-review at bfb46ba: no remaining HIGH.
MEDIUM
A phone that already holds a key could not re-pair with a new QR code ("AUTH_OK named a different device"; orphan device on the PC). Introduced by this PR.
Reproduced, fixed in 0e4862a (the device-id check applies to sign-ins only). Test: "pairs again with a new code a phone that already holds a key for the PC" (fails without the fix).
MEDIUM
An owner on an open (ungated, tokenless) LAN connection never gets the prompt.
Not reproducible: turning the relay on closes the device gate first (RelayService.start → closeGate), so no window is via: "open" while a comparison can run. No change.
LOW
An approved comparison cancelled a pairing code still showing on the PC.
Fixed in 0e4862a (no code is spent on that path). Test: "an approved comparison leaves a pairing code that is still showing usable".
LOW
A pairing pause that began after PAIR_REQUEST was not rechecked before the prompt.
Fixed in bfb46ba (assertRelayPairing right before the prompt).
LOW
Every auth_failed after the digits were shown reads "did not approve" on the phone (a broken commitment, three already waiting, a pause).
Left as is: each one means this phone was not approved, and the PC's message does not tell them apart yet.
Notes: unsolicited prompts (anyone with the link can raise up to 3 at a time, counted toward the shared 20-per-10-minutes limit) and the shared lockout are as designed and documented in docs/relay.md.
…ess link on plain http
Connect a phone, where the link is copied, covered the approval prompt.
The prompt now sits in its own layer above every dialog as a live region,
the link falls back to copyText and stays on screen when the clipboard is
refused, and a retried attempt starts without the last one's comparison.

MEDIUM
The approval prompt rendered behind Settings / Connect a phone, the dialog the codeless link is copied from, so Approve was covered by the scrim.
Reproduced, fixed: the prompt is its own fixed layer above every dialog (--z-palette). Verified in Chromium at 390 and 1280: with Settings open, elementFromPoint at the Approve button is that button.
MEDIUM
Copy a link without a code called navigator.clipboard directly and failed on plain-http LAN addresses.
Fixed (by reading the code; needs a non-secure context to run): it uses copyText, and when the clipboard is refused the link stays on screen, selected.
LOW
role="alertdialog" on a non-blocking line counted as covering the pane (PANE_COVER_SELECTOR).
Fixed: a role="region" live region (aria-live="assertive").
LOW
attempt.compared survived a retry, so a later unrelated failure could read "did not approve".
Fixed: reset on every attempt.
LOW
The phone shows "did not approve" for every post-comparison auth_failed (cap, pause, broken commitment).
Left as is: each one means the phone was not admitted.
Design note
Anyone with the link can raise prompts (up to 3, counted toward the shared failure limit).
As designed and documented. A time-boxed "pairing window" after copying the link is a possible follow-up.
An ungated LAN window is never told of a phone waiting for approval, so
it may neither make a codeless link nor answer one (403 owner_only). The
codeless link the clipboard refuses is now selected once it is drawn.
A phone that still held a key the PC had revoked signed in with it from
a codeless link, was refused, and showed the same failure every time.
The shell now drops that key once and compares digits instead.
An open (ungated) LAN window could make a codeless link and post approvals, but is never sent the relay-pairings prompt.
Reproduced, fixed in d3d38f7: POST /api/relay/link and /api/relay/pairing answer 403 owner_only to an open LAN window. Test: server/dispatch.test.ts "refuses pairing without a code to an open LAN window…" (409 without the fix).
MEDIUM
A phone the PC had revoked still held its old key, so a codeless link signed in with it, was refused, and showed "That pairing code no longer works" on every try.
Reproduced, fixed in c579abd: the shell drops that key once and compares digits instead (pairsAgainWithoutKey in src/lib/relay/shellState.ts). Tests: the unit cases in shellState.test.ts, plus an end-to-end case in channel.test.ts against the real PC session (pair → revoke → codeless link refused → key dropped → digits → approved).
LOW
The link selection fallback ran before the <code> existed.
Revoke all left an approved codeless comparison waiting, so the phone's
PAIR_CONFIRM afterwards still made a drive device. Revoking every device
now ends every comparison under way and withdraws its prompt.
Check each single-input variant against the baseline digits.
The assertion at shared/relay-pair-sas.test.ts:18 allows one variant to return the baseline digits. If pairDigits ignores one input, the variant that changes that input returns the same digits. One match keeps the count below 2, so the test still passes. The current implementation computes all four inputs. This is a regression-coverage gap, not a present defect.
Use fixed 32-byte values for binding, phone, and pc instead of randomPairNonce(). Compute digits once from these values. For each single-input variant, assert that its output differs from digits. Remove the toBeLessThan(2) assertion. Do not compare the variants with each other.
Do not use expect(others).not.toContain(digits) with random nonces. Each variant matches the baseline with probability near 10^-6, so the test can fail intermittently. Fixed inputs remove that randomness. If a chosen fixed input produces digits equal to the baseline, the new assertion fails deterministically. Choose a different constant in that case.

MEDIUM (reproduced, introduced here)
Anyone who knew the PC's id and key (an old QR link, the relay) could raise an approval prompt at any time, with a label of their choosing.
Fixed: copying Copy a link without a code opens a 10-minute window, like a Bluetooth pairing mode. Outside it a comparison is refused with auth_failed before any prompt, and it is not counted as a failed pairing. Tests: "a PC whose owner copied no link without a code refuses a comparison before any prompt, and counts no failure" (fails without the check) and the window's 10-minute edge. The phone's refusal screen and the copy note now say the link works for 10 minutes; docs/relay.md and the changelog say so too.
MEDIUM (reproduced, exists on main)
Abandoned comparisons count toward the shared 20-failure pause, which also blocks QR pairing.
Narrowed by the window: requests outside it no longer count, so a stranger cannot fill the budget. Wrong codes could already do the same on main. No separate budget, per the lead.
LOW
The saved-key recovery removes the key unconditionally (two-tab race).
Not changed: the existing forgetsDevice path has the same race. The recovery now stops when a newer attempt has taken over (f47b7f7).
LOW
Approve/Decline are not reachable with Tab while Connect a phone traps focus.
Not changed in this PR: the prompt is above the dialog and clickable (verified with elementFromPoint). Keyboard reach is a follow-up if it bites.
check fast at 00ecf84: all green (unit 11308 pass, 0 fail). Screenshots refreshed for the changed phone screen.
Merge note: relay pairing by comparing six digits. Screenshots approved by the lead (owner delegated picture OKs). omo CLEAR at fb39f9e, Codex no HIGH, 9 CodeRabbit threads fixed and resolved, required checks green. Follow-up LOW: relay identity reset or relay off does not close an open pairing window.
Keeps both: the PC's early WELCOME is now marked provisional. A HELLO that
offers pairing by comparing digits (#2696) gets a second, final WELCOME with
what the PC selects, and a phone comparing digits waits for that one. Warm
sockets use the room's end() with #2844's ended mark, and a bound warm socket
goes through the PC's shared data-socket path with the pairing deadline.
Part of #2599 (item 2, for the pairing link added after #2759).
## Problem
#2759 made `RelayService.offer()` (`POST /api/relay/offer`, the QR code)
carry the PC's `name`, so the phone app lists a relay PC under its name
instead of its scope URL. The code-less pairing link added later in
#2696 (`RelayService.pairingLink()`, `POST /api/relay/link`, **Copy a
link without a code**) still builds its offer without `name`. A phone
that pairs from that link saves the PC as `https://app.ovis.sh/s/<32
hex>/` again, which is the gap #2599 item 2 describes.
## Fix
Both offers take the name from one helper, `offerName()` in
`server/relay/service.ts`: `os.hostname()` (the name Ovis lists the PC
under, as in `server/machines.ts`), cut to the 64 characters
`RelayOffer` allows, left out when empty. The name rides in the
`#offer=` fragment, so it never reaches app.ovis.sh or the relay. The
link holds no code either way. Its `name` is no more secret than the one
the QR offer already carries.
The code-less link has only shipped in betas (`v0.4.23-beta.6`), so this
PR extends its unreleased `Added` fragment
(`changelog.d/relay-pair-by-comparing-digits.md`) instead of adding a
`Fixed` line for a feature the next release introduces.
## State of the other #2599 items on main (cbcb961)
- Item 1 (open `app.ovis.sh/s/` links in the native apps) is still open.
It needs an Android App Link (`autoVerify` intent-filter plus
`/.well-known/assetlinks.json` with the Play signing key's SHA-256) and
an iOS Universal Link (Associated Domains plus
`apple-app-site-association` with the Team ID). That takes signing
details and an Apple capability change from the maintainer, so this PR
does not close the issue.
- Item 3 (file path in the app.ovis.sh page address) was fixed by #2605:
`readerHref()` goes through `pageAddress()`, which puts the query in the
fragment in relay mode.
## Validation
- New test `names the PC in the pairing link without a code as Ovis
lists it` (`server/relay/service.contract.test.ts`) failed on main
(`Expected: "<hostname>"`, `Received: undefined`) and passes with the
fix.
- `bun test server/relay/service.contract.test.ts
server/relay/pair-sas.contract.test.ts server/dispatch.test.ts`: 67
pass, 0 fail.
- `bun run check fast` ran on the code and test change: all steps ok
(unit: 11427 pass, 0 fail, 45 skip). The changelog fragment was edited
afterwards and checked with `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts`
(12 pass).
- Skipped: `bun run check full`, browser and native-app runs. The change
is server-side only, in an offer the existing client paths
(`relayLink()` in `app/web/shell.js`, `src/lib/relay/shell.tsx`) already
read `name` from.

What
A phone can pair through the relay without a pairing code.
Design note:
docs/relay.md, "Pairing by comparing digits" (under Who gets in), plus the new frames and error rows.Protocol (commit, then reveal)
Feature-negotiated: the phone offers
pair-sasinHELLO, and a PC that supports it selects it inWELCOME. An older phone never offers it. With an older PC the phone stops at the update screen. Nothing changes for either.channelBindinginshared/relay-e2ee.ts, recorded by the carrier guard; the vendored code is untouched). A relay that answers the phone with its own key runs two handshakes, so the two ends hold different bindings.PAIR_REQUEST(phone): label, device key, commitment = H(commit-domain ‖ binding ‖ device key ‖ Np).PAIR_CHALLENGE(PC):Nc.PAIR_REVEAL(phone):Np. The PC checks the commitment in constant time and ends the session withauth_failedif it fails.H(digits-domain ‖ binding ‖ device key ‖ Np ‖ Nc)mod 10^6.PAIR_CONFIRM(phone) + owner approval (POST /api/relay/pairing), both required beforeAUTH_OK.The phone is bound to
Npbefore it seesNc, and the PC picksNcbefore it seesNp, so no single party, the relay included, can choose the digits. A relay that passes the frames through unchanged is refused at step 4. One that runs its own comparison with each end gets matching digits once in 10^6 tries.Limits: 90 s from
PAIR_REQUEST(under the relay's 120 s idle close), thentimeoutand the prompt is withdrawn. At most 3 phones wait at once. Every comparison that ends without a device counts toward the existing 20-failures-per-10-minutes relay pairing limit. The relay learns nothing new: everything travels inside the E2EE channel, so it sees only frame sizes and timing.UI
