feat(account): contract for linking devices through an account - #2834
The contract for linking devices through an account: the wire format of signed account records, the PC's /api/account/* API, the account service API the PC and the apps call, and an in-memory fake of that service for tests. No behaviour changes yet: nothing on the PC uses these files until the follow-up PRs (one admission rule; the PC applying records).
Stacked on #2696 (pairing by comparing digits); the base moves to main once it merges.
docs/account.md: rules (the PC's devices.json stays the only authority; records signed one by one; tombstones that only the PC itself clears), record fields and signing bytes, who may admit a device (one rule for codes, comparing digits and account joins, with number matching for remote approval), the account / pair-intent-* features negotiated in HELLO/WELCOME, the PC API, the account service API, error codes, and what it does not protect against.
shared/account-records.ts: add / remove / link records; strict parsing (exact field set, canonical encodings, labels in the form normalizeLabel leaves); signing bytes = ovis-account/1 then each field length-prefixed (u32 BE); ECDSA P-256 / SHA-256 sign and verify with WebCrypto, so the browser and the PC share it.
shared/account-service-fake.ts: the service API in memory: directory, mailbox per server_id, admissions, and PC mailbox pulls authenticated by server proof with the new account role.
shared/relay-server-proof.ts: the account role. The relay still verifies only control / data, and the MAC covers the role, so an answer given to the account service opens no relay route.
shared/relay-mux.ts: the feature names account, pair-intent-pc, pair-intent-account (constants only; no frame changes).
Security notes for review
Record signatures and AUTH signatures use the same kind of key. AUTH signs ovis-relay-auth/1 || nonce || server_id; records sign ovis-account/1 || .... The two prefixes differ at byte 6, so neither can stand in for the other (tested both ways).
Every field except signature is signed, v and kind included (tested per field and with a kind swap).
A link must be signed by the key it links to; an add can never be signed by the key it adds.
Validation
bun test shared/account-records.test.ts shared/account-service-fake.test.ts shared/relay-pair-sas.test.ts: 18 pass.
The tests fail when the code breaks: dropping a field from the signed bytes, removing the length prefixes, or removing the rule that a link is signed by its own key each turn the suite red.
bun run check fast at 43206b5: workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck, build and unit tests (10971 pass, 0 fail) all ok.
A phone with only the PC's public key (a link without a code) pairs by a
commit-then-reveal comparison bound to the Noise handshake: both screens
show the same six digits, and the pairing finishes only when the phone
confirms and the owner approves on the PC. Feature-negotiated with
pair-sas; QR pairing is unchanged.
A PC endpoint could admit a comparing phone right after its reveal, so
the phone saved that endpoint without its person confirming the digits.
Admission now needs PAIR_CONFIRM sent first. The PC also checks the
relay pairing pause again before showing a prompt.
… a comparison
A phone with a saved key that scans a new QR code is given a new device
id, which the phone refused since the codeless change. An approved
comparison also no longer cancels a pairing code still on screen.
…ess link on plain http
Connect a phone, where the link is copied, covered the approval prompt.
The prompt now sits in its own layer above every dialog as a live region,
the link falls back to copyText and stays on screen when the clipboard is
refused, and a retried attempt starts without the last one's comparison.
An ungated LAN window is never told of a phone waiting for approval, so
it may neither make a codeless link nor answer one (403 owner_only). The
codeless link the clipboard refuses is now selected once it is drawn.
A phone that still held a key the PC had revoked signed in with it from
a codeless link, was refused, and showed the same failure every time.
The shell now drops that key once and compares digits instead.
Revoke all left an approved codeless comparison waiting, so the phone's
PAIR_CONFIRM afterwards still made a drive device. Revoking every device
now ends every comparison under way and withdraws its prompt.
Signed add/remove/link records (ovis-account/1, length-prefixed fields,
ECDSA P-256 via WebCrypto), the PC and account service APIs in
docs/account.md, an in-memory fake of the service for tests, the
server proof's account role, and the account/pair-intent feature names.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(account): contract for linking devices through an account" matches the main change: a contract (docs/account.md, shared account-records, account-service fake, and related feature/proof changes) for linking devices through an account. It is concise, uses a conventional prefix, and names the primary change. It does not describe behaviour changes, which the PR explicitly defers, and the title accurately reflects that this is a contract-only addition.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description summarizes the change, the files involved, the deferred behaviour, the security notes, and validation results. It does not follow the repository template headings exactly: it has "## Summary", "## Security notes for review", and "## Validation", but no "## Change" heading, and it does not link a maintainer-agreed issue as the template asks for features. The Validation section lists the commands run and their results, though it does not state which checks were skipped. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes with minor gaps.
Resolution
Optionally rename or add a "## Change" heading to match the template, link the issue where a maintainer agreed to the feature (the description links only the stacked PR #2696), and note any checks that were skipped. Also note that the Validation section cites a different commit and test count than the PR objectives; confirm which run applies.

…by link, refuse lone surrogates
Review fixes: another account that lists a PC could fill its mailbox and
stall removals; ack now covers every processed record. A self-signed link
over the row's own session needs no prior member. Labels with lone
surrogates are refused (they would share a signature).
CodeRabbit skipped this PR (its base is feat/relay-sas-pairing, not the default branch), so two review agents stand in, as AGENTS.md asks for a PR touching authentication.
Codex adversarial review (crypto-focused: forged add, replay after remove, cross-protocol signature reuse, intent spoofing, server-proof role confusion, number-matching bypass) at 43206b5. Findings and their resolutions, all in d5631ce:
Severity
Finding
Reproduced
Resolution
HIGH
Any account can list any server_id in its directory and queue its own records there. The PC refuses them, but ack covered only applied records, so 100 refused records would stall the page and block a later removal. Pulls also moved last_seen_at in every directory that listed the PC.
Yes, in the fake
Mailboxes are now per PC and account: the PC asks only for its own account's records (account in /v1/pc/mailbox), and another account's records can neither fill nor hide them. ack covers every processed record, refused included. At most 1000 records wait per account and PC (429 mailbox_full). last_seen_at moves only in that account's directory. Covered by a new test in shared/account-service-fake.test.ts.
MEDIUM
No PC could get its first member: every record, link included, required a signer that already was a member.
By reading the contract
A link needs no member: its authority is the linked row's own session, as docs/account.md now says.
MEDIUM
Browsers paired with a code on the PC's own address hold a cookie, not a key, so they cannot satisfy old_key.
By reading the contract
Documented: such rows cannot be linked, stay outside the account, and only Revoke on the PC removes them. unlinked lists relay rows only.
LOW
Labels with a lone UTF-16 surrogate encode as U+FFFD, so two labels could share one signature.
Yes
Labels with a lone surrogate are refused (\p{Cs}), with a test row that fails without the check.
LOW
The contract's admission rule contradicts docs/relay.md (approval on the PC's own windows only; any relay device may start a code). "A tap without looking fails" overstates number matching (1 in 3).
By reading
The wording is fixed here. docs/relay.md changes in the admission PR, together with the code that changes the behaviour.
No forgery, cross-protocol reuse, add-after-remove replay, intent change or relay-valid proof was found beyond the label case above.
Validation at d5631ce: bun run check fast all ok (typecheck, build, unit tests 10972 pass, 0 fail).
…fresh, Apple identity tokens
The contract and the in-memory service gain sign-in as the lead set it:
GET /v1/signin/{github|apple} with an S256 code_challenge and an exact
redirect allow-list (app.ovis.sh, ovis://, loopback on any port), and
POST /v1/token for authorization_code, refresh_token (rotating; reusing
one ends its family) and apple_id_token, and POST /v1/signout. Tokens
reach the directory and the doorbell only; they admit no device.
…e account's PCs
As agreed with the client lane: a device an add record puts on a PC gets
id = hex(SHA-256('ovis-account-device/1' || server_id || key))[0:16], so
the client can sign in without asking (accountDeviceId); and the
approving member can introduce the account's PCs it verified to a newly
added device through the PC that admitted it (POST /api/account/introduce,
GET /api/account/introduction, in memory for 10 minutes).
…hell reach the account service
As agreed with the client lane: the web redirect is exactly
https://app.ovis.sh/ and always gets code and state in the fragment, so
the code never reaches that host's logs; ovis:// may ask for the
fragment; the loopback redirect keeps the query. The hosted shell's
connect-src gains https://account.ovis.sh.
… verifier
Codex review of the sign-in contract: the service accepts an Apple
identity token only when Apple's signature, issuer, audience, expiry and
hashed nonce hold, once each; clients make state and code_verifier fresh
per sign-in and drop a callback with another state; a device already on a
PC keeps its id; a watch device may read its own introduction. The fake
refuses short nonces and spends a code at exactly 60 seconds.
As agreed with the client lane: PUT /v1/pcs/{server_id} takes label,
public_key (X25519, 64 hex) and relay (a wss origin), and GET /v1/pcs
returns them. The service refuses a key that does not give the
server_id, so the stored key cannot be forged, and clients derive the
server_id again before use; the relay is only a route.
…d limits, as the service has them
Matching the account service: POST /v1/signin/github/device and the
device_code grant (authorization_pending, slow_down, access_denied,
expired_token); GET /v1/push/key, PUT/DELETE /v1/push and a fixed ring
with no content on a new PC or an admission; Apple's nonce plain 16-128
characters from the app and its lowercase-hex SHA-256 to Apple, tokens at
most 10 minutes old, once; directory_full, too_many_admissions,
rate_limited and mailbox_full.
… PC's mailbox
For the lead's account-join rule: POST /v1/admissions carries the
signed-in device's account key, and a PC's mailbox pull returns its
account's admissions of the last ten minutes. A comparison with
pair-intent-account outside the owner's pairing window is taken only for
such an admission naming that key, on a PC in the account with a member
to approve it, shown to members only.
Contract additions since the first review, and their review
Retargeted to main after #2696 merged; origin/main is merged in (no force-push).
Agreed with the client and service lanes, now in the contract and the in-memory service:
Sign-in: GitHub or Apple through code + PKCE (S256 only); rotating refresh tokens (reusing one ends its family); sign-out. The web redirect is exactly https://app.ovis.sh/, with the code in the fragment. The loopback redirect keeps the query. ovis://account/callback may ask for the fragment.
Apple identity tokens: the app sends a plain 16-128 character nonce and gives Apple its lowercase-hex SHA-256. Tokens are at most 10 minutes old and used once. GitHub device flow for PCs without a browser.
Push doorbell (/v1/push/key, PUT/DELETE /v1/push) with one fixed, content-free ring.
…igning an add
As agreed with the client lane (closing a reproduced HIGH there): GET
/v1/admissions returns the account's admissions of the last ten minutes,
so the approving client signs an add only for a key the service lists as
admitted at that PC; a compromised PC alone can no longer swap the key.
Add a capacity test for one account's full mailbox.
The isolation test queues five attacker records, far below MAILBOX_MAX (1000). No test reaches the mailbox_full branch. A change that counted records per PC across accounts would still pass this suite.
Each request from one account counts toward ACCOUNT_REQUESTS_PER_WINDOW (600). This includes the attacker's PC registration. Advance the injected clock by LIMIT_WINDOW_MS before the post at index 599. That is the first post that would exceed the budget when the registration counts as one request. A single advance covers the remaining posts and the final probe. Queued records stay within MAILBOX_TTL_MS, because a 10-minute advance is far below the 30-day TTL.
After the box reaches the limit, assert that the next attacker post returns mailbox_full. Then assert that the owner can still queue a record and receive it.

Extend the isolation test around the attacker’s service.fetch loop to fill the
mailbox to MAILBOX_MAX and verify the next attacker post returns mailbox_full.
Account for PC registration in the per-account request budget by advancing the
injected clock by LIMIT_WINDOW_MS before post 599, then keep the remaining posts

owner can still queue a record and receive it.
Add a test for an unredeemed device code reaching its TTL.
The expired_token assertion at shared/account-service-fake.test.ts:270 runs after the approved code was redeemed and deleted. The !entry branch returns that error, so the this.now() >= entry.expires check at shared/account-service-fake.ts:193 is not exercised. No other test in shared/ polls an unredeemed device code at its TTL. Removing that comparison would not fail any test.
Add a case that polls a pending code after DEVICE_CODE_TTL_S seconds and expects expired_token.

Document the label canonical form in the record table.
The label row says only length and control-character limits. parseAccountRecord also rejects leading or trailing whitespace, repeated whitespace, and lone surrogates. A client that follows the table signs a label such as Mac and receives record_invalid.

Update the label row in the record table to document the canonical form enforced
by parseAccountRecord: labels must have no leading or trailing whitespace,
repeated whitespace, or lone surrogates, in addition to the stated length and
control-character limits. Describe the whitespace form produced by
normalizeLabel so clients can prepare valid labels before signing them.

Enforce the 10-minute Apple identity-token age in the fake.
appleIdToken stores only the account and nonce hash. The apple_id_token grant never checks token age. A token minted at the injected clock and exchanged after more than ten minutes still returns a session, although docs/account.md says the service accepts such a token only if it was issued at most 10 minutes ago. Record the issue time when the token is minted, and reject the grant when this.now() is more than 10 * 60_000 ms past it. Add a test that advances now past the limit and expects 400.

Return a 400 response for non-object JSON bodies in the fake.
A JSON null body passes request.json() and then throws a TypeError at body.grant_type. The fetch catch block rethrows that error, so the promise rejects instead of returning a { "error": { "code", "message" } } response. The same unchecked cast appears in the client and pc handlers.

Apply the same guard at the other request.json() sites, at shared/account-service-fake.ts lines 266, 282, 300, 325, and 339.

POST /v1/records returns 400 unknown_pc for any server_ids list longer than ACCOUNT_RECORDS_MAX (32), even when every listed PC is in the account's directory. Align the account_mismatch status with the documented error table.
POST /v1/records in the account service fake returns 403 for a record signed for another account. The Errors table in docs/account.md lists account_mismatch as 409. The same table also lists signature_invalid as 400, and this endpoint returns that code too, so the table covers service responses. Clients that branch on status receive a different result than the contract states. The test at shared/account-service-fake.test.ts:63 checks only the error code, so it does not detect this mismatch.
Decide which side is intended. Change the fake to return 409, or change the table to 403. The diff depends on that decision, so none is proposed.

Refuse the all-zero challenge key with a 401 response.
A public_key of 64 zero hex digits passes proofKey and the server_id check. serverChallenge then throws invalid proof public key. pc() and fetch do not catch it, so fetch rejects instead of returning a problem response. Wrap the serverChallenge call in the challenge branch and return a 401 on failure.
