Problem

The owner tried #2327 on the main test app and prefers not to see its Live terminal box in a Letta Code chat. What he wants instead is Letta's in-progress messages appearing in the chat as they are written, the way OmO, Codex and Claude Code look. That is being measured separately, from Letta's own chunk logs, and is not guessed from the terminal.

Change

git revert of e5ed425 (#2327), client only, with no HTTP/WS contract change:

  • ChatView no longer mounts a live TerminalFallback under a running letta-transcript turn. The live-turn arm (nextLiveTurnArm, liveTurnShown, turnOnlyInTerminal) and its read counters are gone.
  • src/lib/lettaScreen.ts, its fixtures and tests, the .is-live CSS and the "Live terminal" chat strings are removed.
  • DESIGN.md, docs/guide.md and the unreleased changelog.d/letta-native-chat.md fragment are back to their wording from before fix(chat): show a running Letta Code turn from the live terminal under its transcript #2327. No release carried the box (no v* tag contains e5ed425), so there is no separate changelog entry for removing it.

While Letta works, its chat shows the turns written so far and the usual Working line. The turn appears when Letta writes it at the end, as it did after #2312.

#2327 carried no unrelated fix: every line it changed served the box. The one later commit on these files, ae3f080 (#2270, the faded sent-waiting bubble), is kept intact.

Verification

  • Real letta in the browser. I used an isolated herdr session under a temp HOME, letta 0.34.23 on its local backend with gemini-3.1-flash-lite, and two Ovis servers on loopback (origin/main and this branch) with their state in temp dirs, driven by Bun.WebView at 1280 px. The turn ran a Bash command and then wrote a 250-word story.
    • Mid-turn, origin/main shows the Live terminal box under the turns.
    • Mid-turn, this branch shows only Working… and no .chat-terminal-fallback.
    • After the turn, this branch shows the written turn: /api/pane/conversation returns letta-transcript with 4 turns, and the story is on screen.
  • bun run check fast on 0eabe74: typecheck, build and unit tests are all ok.
  • No regression test was added. Nothing mounts ChatView in a unit test, and the removed tests covered only the removed code. The browser comparison is the before/after proof.

Reviews

Refs #2327, #1730

Reverts e5ed425 (#2327). The owner tried it and prefers not to see the
terminal box in Letta's chat. Letta writes a turn to its transcript only
when the turn ends, so the chat again shows the turns written so far with
the usual Working line, and the turn appears when Letta writes it.

Showing Letta's in-progress messages as they are written is being
measured separately (chunk logs), not guessed from the terminal.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Chat no longer displays a live terminal view while Letta Code is working or waiting for input. A turn appears in Chat after it finishes when the integration and conversation match.
    • If no matching transcript is available, terminal output remains accessible through a collapsed disclosure that loads the full output when opened.
    • Removed the dedicated live-terminal display and its compact, fixed-height presentation.

ChatView removes the live terminal fallback for active Letta turns. The remaining terminal disclosure reads the full transcript. Related screen-processing code and fixtures are removed, and documentation is updated.

Changes: Letta live terminal fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove the live fallback from ChatView
src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/components/ChatView.css, src/components/ChatLiveTurn.test.ts
TerminalFallback no longer has a live mode and starts closed. When visible, it reads the full transcript, filters status messages, and polls at PROMPT_POLL_MS. ChatView no longer tracks or renders the live fallback. Its dedicated styles and tests are removed.
Remove supporting live-terminal code and materials
src/lib/lettaScreen*, src/lib/fixtures-letta-screens/*, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/letta-native-chat.md, docs/guide.md, src/lib/i18n/chat.*.ts
The Letta screen parser, its tests, and terminal fixtures are removed. The design description and guide no longer describe a live display; the changelog retains the terminal-text fallback when the matching conversation is not reported. The “Live terminal” translations are removed.

Add an active Letta-turn regression test.

No current test renders ChatView with an active turn. The existing ChatFallback tests only assert command and outcome rows. Add one focused ChatView test that renders the active Letta-turn state and asserts that no live terminal disclosure is present. Without it, reintroducing the removed live TerminalFallback mount would not fail the suite.

Re CodeRabbit's nitpick (add a ChatView test for an active Letta turn): declined for this PR.

  • No test in the repo mounts ChatView: it needs the machine API, the conversation poller, settings and the session snapshot. The first one would be a new harness written only to assert that a deleted feature stays deleted. fix(chat): show a running Letta Code turn from the live terminal under its transcript #2327's own tests did not mount it either; they tested its pure arm reducer, which this revert removes.
  • The behaviour was proven on the real surface instead. Real letta 0.34.23 ran in an isolated herdr session, with two Ovis builds in Bun.WebView at 1280 px. Mid-turn, origin/main shows the Live terminal box under the turns and this branch shows only Working…. After the turn, this branch shows the written turn.
  • Reintroducing the box would mean adding back a mount, its CSS, its strings and its reducer. That would show up in review, not slip in by accident.

Merging 0eabe74 (the owner's go for 0.4.20). Drops the Letta Code 'Live terminal' box under the chat: a clean revert of #2327's client behaviour (15 files, the same ones #2327 added or changed; #2270's waiting bubble is kept). A running Letta turn shows 'Working...' until Letta writes the turn to its transcript. The merge pass checked the diff is the inverse of #2327's client change. The lane's evidence: check fast green; omo and Codex APPROVE; real Letta QA showing only Working... and then the written turn.

## Release 0.4.20

The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
initially on main `bd676637a16471e8744d62c7311026ddb43a39eb` (#2335,
xterm 6), then merged with final-scope main
`ef482f2e66b3344658fb548fa1110744a92929c9` (#2338) and test-only
follow-up main `269e9ce19558b8d197959250075da56b25b9668f` (#2345):

- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.20 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.20` initially folded
122 fragments into the 2026-10-29 section of `CHANGELOG.md`, linked
their PRs, and deleted the fragments. After merging main, the modified
`letta-native-chat.md` from #2338 was folded by hand with its current
wording and PR link. No other late fragment landed; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. Four additional entries for external PRs without their
own fragments bring the section to 157 entries.
- Added 22 `by @login` credits across all 19 outside-contributor PRs in
the release range. Preserved the existing credit to @Yoonwoo-Ha for
#1634. See the complete ancestry-based audit below.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines, matching 0.4.19's shape. They include the xterm 6
improvement: terminal frames no longer mix old and new output. Every
English line is at most 80 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 38 to 39 because
the bundle inputs changed since remote-v38.
- **Telemetry:** the guard confirms no Worker deploy or deployed
fingerprint update is needed.
- **iOS upload note:** CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION raised to 3 for App and
OvisNotifications (last uploaded: 2, source: `docs/native-app.md:99`,
commit `54fdadc1c65da5d50a6afef411e3ed8f23b6c255`). Both targets inherit
project-level Debug and Release settings, and every
`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` entry is 3. `app/store/ios.md` now records the
prepared build. This is the last documented upload, not a live App Store
Connect query; check for later uploads before uploading. The marketing
version remains 1.0.
- The changelog explicitly distinguishes delivery: removing WebKit's
form bar (#2109) requires the new iOS app build, while Korean
composition (#2307) comes with the PC update and needs no new iOS build.
The Korean-input summary says the same in all four languages, with no
change to list counts.

## Validation

- Final `dori heavy release-check -- bun run check fast`: passed, exit
0; workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit
suite (8,591 pass, 0 fail, 34 platform skips in 549 files). This is the
merged tree containing #2338, #2345, the contributor corrections and iOS
build 3.
- `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts
server/release-notes.test.ts`: 33 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.20`: passed, with all patch-note
lists and the full changelog.
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts` and CI mode with `--base
ef482f2`: passed on the final merged
tree: "Release 0.4.20: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --release 0.4.20`: expected exit 1 only
because "remote-v39 is not published." The merge pass publishes it after
merging.

## Merge pass

**Do not merge before the owner's OK.**

- [ ] Merge only after the owner's OK and required checks pass.
- [ ] After merging, push `remote-v39` on the merged commit and wait for
the **Remote PC bundles** workflow to publish the manifest and all
archives.
- [ ] Then run **Release** on `main` with version `0.4.20`, without `v`.
The Release workflow creates the app tag; do not push it by hand.
- [ ] From this PR's merge until the Release run is done, merge nothing
touching `server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock` or `patches/`.
- [ ] A changelog fragment merged after this PR must be moved into
0.4.20 by hand.

This lane stops at the open PR. No tag, workflow dispatch, merge or
telemetry deploy was performed.

**Completed release follow-up:** merged main `ef482f2e` including #2338
(`fix/letta-no-live-box`), folded its revised fragment into 0.4.20, and
retained the contributor-credit commit `184dc120` and iOS-build commit
`0ffa3d45`. The Letta summary already describes conversation support
without promising a live-terminal box, so it needs no change.

Merged test-only #2345 from main `269e9ce1`: the two usage browser
checks now wait for the earlier shared account-order save and start the
sign-in check from a cleared order. No product behavior or late fragment
was added; `changelog.d` still contains only `README.md`. The iOS
delivery clarification and resolved review thread are retained.

## Complete external-contributor audit

Checked every merged PR whose merge commit is in `git log
v0.4.19..origin/main`: 133 PRs through final-scope main `ef482f2e`, or
134 including test-only #2345 on `269e9ce1`, with 19 PRs by 12 external
non-bot authors. Both rescans found no additional external-author gaps;
#2345 is by the maintainer. Added the four missing entries: #2271 and
#2274 by @CharleoYang, #2290 by @DravenDou, and #2282 by @fivetaku. The
tab-reopening summary now includes the history-page improvement in all
four languages; list counts remain 5/5/5.

Full external PR list checked: #1911 @jjsteffen; #2068 @YuuuXie; #2072
@Noobear; #2087 @JJLiebig; #2145 @mattmarcin; #2176 @jpcarranza94; #2231

#2301 @jpcarranza94; #2321 @kilhyeonjun. Every PR has a linked `by
@login` credit in 0.4.20.

## Change

Docs only: `docs/guide.md` now matches what 0.4.20 and current main do.
I checked each claim against the code that decides it (file:line in the
table below) and changed only `docs/guide.md`.

- **Letta Code.** The Supported agents cell is short now: it says what
Letta needs (`herdr integration install letta`) and that a turn shows
once it ends, with **Working…** in the meantime. The binding rules moved
to a new **Letta Code** subsection at the end of the section, which also
says what a running turn looks like and lists the three known
wrong-conversation cases of #2314.
- **Subscription usage.** Expired Claude and Codex accounts get **Sign
in again**. Hub accounts do not.
- **Chat.** The faded bubble a sent message shows until its turn is
written: the clock after 5 s, the bubble gone after a minute, no bubble
for `/…` and `!…` commands. Also the Claude Code bash-mode (`!`) card,
with stderr in red.
- **Terminal.** xterm.js 6 draws only whole frames, and Alt speeds the
wheel in a program that reads the mouse.
- **Voice input.** On a touch screen with the browser's own recognition,
you tap to start and tap to finish. An iPhone home-screen app asks for
the mic on the first tap, not when Voice input is turned on. When Siri &
Dictation is off, the mic says so. A mouse, or an API key, still allows
hold-to-talk.
- **Quick start.** On a slow link, the boot spinner shows while the app
downloads.
- **Manage sessions.** The Ultracode switch in New workspace and New
tab, linked to agent-commands.md.

The OpenCode drag text (#2368) was already accurate, so it is unchanged.
The agent install flow (`changelog.d/agent-install-run.md`) is left out:
`AgentSetupCard` is not mounted anywhere yet, so users have no surface
for it.

No changelog fragment: each behaviour described here already has its own
changelog entry, in 0.4.20 or in `changelog.d/`, and this PR only brings
the guide up to date with them.

## Verification

- `bun run check fast`: green on b16eabc (typecheck, build, generated
files, 8666 unit tests pass, 0 fail). Also green on 0d8db7e and
d2527fe.
- No test: this is a prose-only change (repo rule: doc text is never
pinned by a test).

## Reviews

- **omo-native-code-reviewer** on 0d8db7e: APPROVE, no
CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM. Its 5 LOW points were checked against the code and
applied in d2527fe: Alt speeds a trackpad wheel; Ultracode's
prerequisites; the faded bubble only in a native-session chat; the first
#2314 case needs Ovis not to have looked first; the iPhone home-screen
mic rule is its own bullet.
- **Codex Sol 6.1 fast xhigh**, round 1 on 0d8db7e: REQUEST CHANGES
with 5 MEDIUM. All five were checked against the code and fixed in
d2527fe:
- Letta: a second pane, or a turn not yet written, clears by itself,
without restarting `letta` (`letta-store.ts:195,288`).
- The bubble's clock means the turn is not written yet, not that the
agent has not taken it (`sentWaiting.ts`).
  - xterm.js 6 waits for a synchronized frame for up to a second.
- The Ultracode switch only asks Claude Code, which ignores it without
xhigh and dynamic workflows (`agentLaunchMode.ts`).
- Silence is trimmed only where the recorder can pause; otherwise the
whole recording is sent (`voice.ts:613-620`). This was a stale sentence
next to the touched text.
LOWs applied: start `letta` once before `herdr integration install
letta` (`agent-catalog.ts:875`); the 2 s record margin; 401/403 also
read as expired (`usage.ts:1052`); the voice level shows only when the
server transcribes (`voice.ts:491`).
- **Codex round 2** on d2527fe only: one MEDIUM. A Letta pane in the
home folder never binds (`letta-store.ts:255`), so "until letta starts
again" was wrong there. Fixed in b16eabc with Codex's own wording.
Under the review cap, there is no further round.
- Left as written (LOW): Codex noted that "rare" for the #2314 cases is
a judgment, not something the code shows. Each case needs a Letta folder
move plus a conversation switch Ovis did not see, which is why the guide
calls them rare.
