feat(chat): show a sent message as the user's faded bubble until its turn - #2270
Claude records a user turn only when its next turn starts, so between Send and that moment the chat showed nothing of the message just sent: only "Working…". On an ordinary PC that gap is 0.3–0.5 s; on a slow or remote PC whose transcript arrives late it lasts seconds.
Change
A message sent from Chat shows at once as the user's own bubble, the way a messenger does it (the Claude and ChatGPT apps, iMessage):
Faded, no caption. The bubble is the normal user bubble with its text in --text-dim. Nothing is written under it. When the agent writes the turn, the turn takes its place, so the bubble reads as coming up to full strength.
A clock only when it is late. If the turn has not come after 5 s, a small clock icon appears where the turn's time will be (labelled "Sent · waiting for the agent's next turn" for hover and screen readers). An idle Claude writes the turn within half a second, so a sooner clock would flash on almost every send; past 5 s something really holds it (a turn still running, a far or slow PC).
Only a confirmed immediate send gets a bubble. A send to a busy agent keeps main's queued row ("Next turn · Send now"); a refused or unconfirmed send keeps main's alerts unchanged. A command (/cost, ! ls) gets none, since it never comes back as that user turn. A bubble whose turn has not come within a minute goes.
Settled only by its own turn. A send is matched by its own whole user turn, newer than every turn the chat showed when it was sent, without comparing the browser's clock with the PC's (a phone clock 60 s ahead used to keep the bubble forever). A replaced herdr, or a lost connection, drops its PC's bubbles; nothing is sent again, and the next read shows what became of the message.
No new setting, no row beyond the bubble, and no live region of its own: the chat footer keeps its one quiet status region.
Files
src/lib/sentWaiting.ts (+ test): the per-pane store of confirmed sends and how a transcript turn settles one; WAITING_SEND_MS (1 min) and WAITING_HINT_MS (5 s).
src/components/SentWaiting.tsx (+ test), src/components/ChatView.{tsx,css}: the faded bubble, its late clock, and useWaitingSends, which lets a PC's waiting sends go with its connection.

Evidence
Side by side on real Claude Code 2.1.311 (Haiku 4.5) on an isolated herdr session, three servers with fresh state dirs (main 010a44dd | this PR before the slim commit 01982691 | this head b364cc6b), Codex theme dark and light, 1280 and 390 px: just after a send to an idle agent, a second message while busy, and a send still waiting after 5 s (transcript reads delayed 7 s).
src/components/SentWaiting.test.tsx fails on 01982691 (caption present, no clock) and passes on b364cc6b; with sentWaiting.test.ts and useComposerSends.test.ts: 53 pass.
bun run check fast on 01414921: typecheck, build, unit 8437 pass / 0 fail.
Merge-pass review of b364cc6b (whole-second first read, disconnect, two status regions, mounted clock tests): fixed in 01414921, each with a test that failed first.
Earlier rounds also read the pane's input box (?draft=1), settled lost receipts from an empty box, and turned submit_partial into an informational note. Review showed an empty box proves nothing about what was typed, so those parts were withdrawn; this PR is now only the sent-message bubble. Maintainer commits on top of @CharleoYang's: matching by whole turn without the browser clock, no bubble for commands, the one-minute bound, and the caption-free faded bubble with the late clock.
Claude (and omp) write the user turn only when the next turn starts: while the
running one finishes, a message that did leave the box had nothing on screen, and
the reader could not tell it from a lost one — worse when they went to another tab
meanwhile.
The chat now keeps the sent text under its pane (lib/sentWaiting.ts, a store, not
component state, so a tab switch does not drop it) and draws it under the
transcript with "Sent · waiting for the agent's next turn" until a user turn says
it (whitespace and wrapping are ignored: the pane keeps what was typed). Once the
transcript has it, the line is forgotten.
The two unconfirmed notices also stop claiming failure: a cleared draft with no
Enter receipt may already be queued in the terminal, and they now say so
("it may already be queued in the terminal" / "it may already have reached the
agent") before asking the reader to check.
Not yet done, and why: `server/core/composer.ts:582` still reports `submit_partial`
when the draft cleared without a receipt. Treating "the input line no longer holds
the text" as delivered needs a per-agent draft reader (Claude has one —
claude-input.ts; omp/pi do not yet), so the send keeps its honest "unconfirmed"
wording rather than claiming a delivery it cannot see.

A send whose receipt never came back may already be the agent's next turn —
Claude and omp hold the message until the running turn ends — so showing a
warning with a "check the terminal" order tells the reader the opposite of what
the app knows: it does not know.
`submitRefusal("submit_partial")` returns `{ info }` now, and the composer draws
that as a quiet status line (an info glyph, `role="status"`, no warning colour)
instead of an alert. The message stays in the box, so nothing is lost, and the
chat's own "Sent · waiting for the agent's next turn" line covers a message that
did leave.
Not changed, deliberately: the server's verdict. Turning "the box no longer holds
the text" into "delivered" needs a per-agent box reader. Claude has one
(server/claude-input.ts, and the composer already reads it for a held draft);
omp and pi do not have one yet, and guessing there would clear a message that a
dialog may have swallowed. The next step is that reader, with a negative control
per agent (a send whose text is still in the box must keep failing).

…e's own box
Claude and omp hold a message typed while a turn runs until that turn ends, so a
bridge that gives up on the receipt (or a bridge that answered `submit_partial`)
was reporting a delivered message as unconfirmed and telling the reader to check
the terminal.
`GET /api/pane/prompt?draft=1` answers what a Claude pane's input box holds now
(`""` for an empty box, null when it cannot be read whole; the hot path is
unchanged, the read is asked for). `lib/sendUncertain.ts` reads that box:
- empty (or the caret alone) → the words left it: the send is settled as delivered,
the draft clears, the chat's "Sent · waiting for the agent's next turn" line
carries the text, and no warning is shown;
- still holding the message → nothing left, the reader decides (unchanged);
- holding something else, or unreadable → the app decides nothing (unchanged).
Wired for both paths that used to fail: a `submit_partial` refusal and a submit
whose promise rejected. Live check: a Claude pane with an empty box answers
`draft: "❯"`, and the oracle reads that as delivered.
Claude only for now: omp and pi have no box reader on this server yet, so their
sends keep the quiet "may already be queued" note instead of a verdict.
Signed-off-by: CharleoYang <335833929+CharleoYang@users.noreply.github.com>
`?draft=1` answered only for Claude. omp, pi and OmO (and gjc, codex when the shape
holds) draw the editor between their last two full-width rules: server/agent-input-box.ts
reads those rows as text (each trimmed — the only reader compares words, not spaces),
and answers "" for an empty editor, its words for a draft, null when the screen is not
that shape (a dialog in the editor's place, fewer than two rules).
The refusal side widened with it: `uncertainSend(code, message)` now also treats a
herdr connection that closed (or errored) *under a write* as unknown — `closed` /
`socket_error` whose message names `agent.prompt`, `pane.send_text` or `pane.send_keys`
— so "未发送: herdr closed the connection before answering agent.prompt" is settled by
the box instead of shown as a failure. A read that lost its connection, and every
other refusal, stays a refusal.
Live: three omp panes answer `draft: ""` (empty editors), which the oracle reads as
delivered. The drafted shape is covered by server/agent-input-box.test.ts.
Residual, stated on purpose: if a write died before the pane took any text and the box
was already empty, this settles it as delivered; the chat's "Sent · waiting" line then
stays until the reader notices it never became a turn. That is the trade the reader
asked for, and it is visible rather than silent.

New Features
Sent messages remain visible in the conversation while the agent’s next turn is pending.
The composer can check whether a message left the terminal input before reporting an uncertain send.
Bug Fixes
When a send’s status is unclear, the composer now advises checking the terminal or agent before trying again, helping avoid duplicate messages.
Informational notices are visually distinct from warnings.
The prompt API can return parsed pane draft text. Send handling checks drafts after uncertain outcomes and tracks sent text until a matching user turn appears in the transcript.
Send handling checks uncertain outcomes against the pane draft. Informational notes describe possible queued or delivered messages, and the composer renders them as status messages.
Track and display pending sends src/lib/sentWaiting.ts, src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts, src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/lib/i18n/chat.{ja,ko,zh}.ts
Waiting sends are stored by machine and pane, matched against user turns, and shown in the chat footer until a matching turn appears.
This change shows sent text until the transcript catches up and settles uncertain sends from the pane's input box. A possibly queued message can be re-sent through a "Send anyway" button, and a send that failed before typing may be presented as delivered while the draft is cleared. The "waiting" line can also vanish or be skipped in some cases. Fix the duplicate-send action and the empty-box delivery assumption before merging.

behavior.
- Line 54: Update the waiting-entry storage in sentWaiting so each successful

that turn, preserving other sends that are still awaiting their turns.
- Line 22: Update the turn matching in sentWaiting’s loop so transcriptHolds

the new waiting entry until its turn appears.

Thank you, @CharleoYang. A send whose receipt never arrives is a real and confusing case, and the live examples in the description are very helpful. We reviewed it carefully. The goal is right, but the settle step can report a message as sent when nothing shows that it was, and we have a firm rule that screen reading must fail closed.
What we found (reproduced)
An empty box is taken as proof of delivery. herdr can close the connection before typing anything, which leaves the box exactly as empty as before. sendLeftTheBox (src/lib/sendUncertain.ts ~17) then returns true, and the Composer settles and drops the recoverable draft. The description lists this case as not covered. Drafts of only > or ❯ also count as sent.
A missing or clipped Claude box reads as an empty draft.server/prompt.ts (~1111) uses claudeInputBoxText, a display helper that returns "" for an unreadable box and truncates long content. So "no box here" and a clipped box are both reported as sent.
Any two horizontal rules count as an agent's editor.server/agent-input-box.ts (~13-30) accepts two rows of eight or more rule characters within 12 rows, for omp, pi, omo, gjc and codex, though live evidence exists only for omp. An unrelated panel with a blank line between rules reads as an empty, sent box.
Medium issues:
An old or merely similar user turn clears a new send's waiting notice (src/lib/sentWaiting.ts ~19-28).
A second send overwrites the first notice.
The informational uncertainty note still offers Send anyway.
src/lib/compose.test.ts (~188) pins an English sentence instead of the behaviour.
What would make it mergeable
Keep a send uncertain unless a receipt, or a fact about that specific message, confirms it. An empty or unreadable input box is not proof.
Return null (stay uncertain) for an absent, clipped or unrecognised box, using an untruncated reader rather than the display helper.
Recognise only agent-specific editor layouts that have evidence behind them.
Tie the waiting notice to a turn that appears after the send and to the whole message, and keep one notice per outstanding send.
Offer Send anyway only where a draft or override exists, and test behaviour rather than wording.
We found no automatic resend path, which is good: please keep it that way.
Addressed all six actionable CodeRabbit findings in ebd5b50. Fetched origin/main: this branch was genuinely 7 commits behind, so merged it (77a61c4), resolving the two conflicts by preserving both input-at-rest and receipt-settlement wiring. No rebase or force push.
Finding
Verdict and implementation
Covering regression and red-before / green-after evidence
1 — informational Send anyway
Fixed — src/components/Composer.tsx:1128 renders resend actions only for explicit draft/anyway refusals; info notes remain status-only.
src/components/Composer.test.tsx:8, submit_partial displays an informational notice without a Send anyway action: before fix expected 0 buttons, received 1; passes after fix and retains the draft.
2 — empty input mistaken for delivery
Fixed — removed sendUncertain.ts and the speculative empty-box settlement path. src/lib/useComposerSends.ts:133-135 leaves uncertain outcomes as refusals/rejections, keeping retryable composer text. An empty box is not proof of typing; even submit_partial can refer to clearing an old terminal draft (server/core/composer.ts:595).
src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts:147, an already-empty box does not confirm a connection refusal and ... rejection: before fix both incorrectly resolved true; both pass after fix with no waiting entry. The old helper tests that required false success were removed with the helper.
3 — older identical turn
Fixed — src/lib/sentWaiting.ts:16-17 excludes older, undated, and invalidly dated turns. src/lib/useComposerSends.ts:130 records send time before submission, not after receipt.
src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts:35, keeps a repeated message waiting when only an earlier matching user turn exists: before fix returned null instead of the pending text; passes after fix. Additional receipt-latency coverage: useComposerSends.test.ts:177.
4 — shared prefix
Fixed — src/lib/sentWaiting.ts:20-24 requires complete normalized text, or an explicit trailing …/..., a substantial >=20-character prefix, and the send-time guard.
src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts:41, does not settle pending yes from yes, please proceed with the changes; :45, does not settle an unmarked shortened copy; :50, matches a genuinely shortened copy only with its explicit ellipsis: all three failed before the fix and pass after it.
5 — overwritten waiting send
Fixed — src/lib/sentWaiting.ts:53 appends distinct send IDs; :64 consumes each matching transcript turn once, retaining claimed turn identities across refreshes; src/components/ChatView.tsx:2250 renders a separate line per send.
src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts:56, keeps a second send’s own waiting line without overwriting the first: before fix only the second message remained; passes after fix, including independent removal. Additional tests cover two identical sends across refreshes (:70) and a delayed/absent transcript turn (:86).
6 — receipt after navigation
Fixed — src/lib/useComposerSends.ts:138-143 records confirmed sends under their original pane; only setChatLocalSend remains fenced by current pane/socket/session identity.
src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts:162, records a confirmed send for its original pane after navigation without following the new pane: before fix the waiting record was null; passes after fix and does not follow the new pane.
Verification:
bun run typecheck: exit 0, no TypeScript errors (both project configurations).
bun test src/components/Composer.test.tsx src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts src/lib/compose.test.ts src/lib/composerDraft.test.ts server/agent-input-box.test.ts: 129 pass, 0 fail, 477 assertions, 6 files.
The nine named per-finding regressions above were exercised against their original implementations before fixing them; the extra identity/delayed-turn/receipt-time controls were added during the unified per-send refactor and verified green afterward.
No whole-suite run. Existing react-test-renderer deprecation/act-environment warnings remain, without failures.
Push succeeded normally to delivery/feat/send-settlement; head: ebd5b50.

feat(composer): settle a send whose receipt never came by the pane's own input box
feat(composer): keep a sent message visible until its turn, and read the pane's box to choose delivery

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thank you, @CharleoYang, for the quick and careful round. We re-checked ebd5b50 against our earlier review. The dangerous path is gone, which was the main concern. A few things are still open.
Resolved
An empty box is no longer taken as proof of delivery. A refused or rejected submit stays a refusal, and the send hook no longer reads the box to decide.
A second send no longer overwrites the first notice. Each confirmed send keeps its own notice until its own turn, including repeated identical sends.
The informational note no longer offers Send anyway. The new render test covers this.
Old transcript turns no longer clear a new notice. Earlier, missing-date and invalid-date turns are now ignored.
Still open
A different later message can still clear a notice (src/lib/sentWaiting.ts ~17-25). The match removes all whitespace and accepts an ellipsis prefix.
Please inspect the deployment configuration… clears the notice for Please inspect the deployment configuration and then apply safe changes.
change ab to c clears the notice for change a b to c.
Please match on the whole message, using only transformations the transcript is known to apply, and otherwise keep the notice.
The draft endpoint still reports guesses as facts, although nothing in the app reads it any more (server/prompt.ts ~1129-1133, server/agent-input-box.ts ~17-30).
A missing or clipped Claude box still comes back as "" through the display helper claudeInputBoxText, against the null that shared/protocol.ts promises.
Any two horizontal rules still count as an editor for omp, pi, omo, gjc and codex.
Since nothing uses it now, the simplest fix may be to drop the endpoint and its reader from this PR.
src/lib/compose.test.ts (~188-189) still compares a full English sentence. Please assert the info variant and the behaviour instead; the new render test already does most of that.
With these three addressed, this looks close. It still needs the maintainer's decision as a feature.
Thank you, @CharleoYang. The sent-message bubble is a real improvement: on a slow PC the chat no longer goes blank between Send and the agent's turn. We tried it side by side with main on a real Claude Code pane (desktop and phone), and to save you another round we made the remaining changes on your branch ourselves (maintainer edits). Your commits are untouched; ours are on top, with origin/main merged in (no rebase).
What we changed
Matching (src/lib/sentWaiting.ts). A send is settled only by its own whole user turn. Spaces inside a line now count, and an ellipsized opening is not a match: the transcript keeps user turns whole. Only what the terminal is known to do is normalized: CRLF, line-end whitespace, and the space after a final @mention.
No browser clock. The phone's clock was compared with the PC's transcript times. With a phone clock 60 s ahead, the bubble never went away. A send now records the turns the chat showed when it was sent; its own turn must be new and later than all of them. The browser's lead over the PC is bounded by when the chat read those turns, without trusting either clock.
Commands get no bubble./cost, a skill or ! ls comes back as a command, never as that user turn. Live, the "waiting" line stayed forever beside "/cost · Ran in terminal". We now record the text the composer types (composerMessage), so paste markers do not block settling.
A bubble cannot stay. A replaced herdr drops a PC's bubbles, since pane IDs are given out again. A bubble whose turn has not come within 60 s goes, for example after Esc in the terminal.
The baseline needs a real read. It is taken only from a conversation read that answered; a failed read records none. It also allows for a transcript that keeps whole-second times.
Dropped the ?draft=1 reader and server/agent-input-box.ts. Nothing called them after round 4. They also answered "❯" for an empty Claude box and "" for a screen with no box (a /cost dialog), against the null the protocol promises.
Kept submit_partial an alert, with main's wording. The server raises it for any failure after the terminal draft was cleared (server/core/composer.ts), including one where nothing was typed. "May already be queued" would be a guess.
The bubble looks like the user's own. It is right-aligned with a dashed edge, uses the chat's text size, and has the status under it. Settling runs before paint, and all bubbles share one status region.
The changelog entry moved to changelog.d/chat-sent-waiting.md. Two stray doc-comment deletions in src/lib/i18n.{ja,ko,zh}.ts are restored.
Verification
Every new test was run against the code before its fix and failed there. Then:
bun test src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts: green
bun run typecheck: exit 0
bun run check fast: green (8429 unit tests)
Live on an isolated herdr session with Claude Code (Sonnet), desktop 1440 and phone 390:
the bubble appears in the same frame the box clears and gives way to the turn
/cost leaves nothing behind
a phone with its clock 60 s ahead settles normally
Two independent reviews (Codex and an omo code reviewer) over three rounds. Their findings are fixed above.
Note for the merge pass:#2301 now overlaps only in src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts, where both PRs add tests at the end; keep both.
…er 5 s
Drop the caption under the waiting bubble: the sent words show as the user's own bubble with dim text, and the turn that replaces it reads as the same bubble at full strength. A small clock, labelled with the old caption for assistive tech, joins it where the turn's time will be only when the turn has not come after 5 s (an idle Claude writes it within half a second).
devswha
changed the title
feat(composer): keep a sent message visible until its turn, and read the pane's box to choose delivery
feat(chat): show a sent message as the user's faded bubble until its turn
Oct 29, 2026
Thanks again, @CharleoYang. Showing the message the moment it is sent is the right call, and we are keeping it. We made one more change on your branch (b364cc6, on top of your commits, no force push), to keep the chat as uncluttered as a messenger:
The waiting message is now your own bubble with its text faded, with nothing written under it. The "Sent · waiting for the agent's next turn" line under every send was noise, since an idle agent picks the message up within half a second.
Only when the agent has not taken it after 5 s does a small clock appear beside the bubble (that sentence is now its hover and screen-reader label).
Busy sends, refused sends and their alerts stay exactly as on main.
We compared main, the previous head and this one side by side on a real Claude pane (desktop and phone, dark and light), and the maintainer preferred this version. The PR description is updated to match.
…with the connection, keep one status region
- A send made before the chat's first read has no baseline; its own time now gets the same whole-second allowance, so a turn stamped 10:00:02 settles a send made at 10:00:02.500 instead of showing beside its faded copy.
- A lost connection lets the PC's waiting sends go (useWaitingSends), before paint; the reconnect read says what became of them, and nothing is sent again.
- The waiting bubbles are no live region of their own, so the chat footer keeps its one quiet status region.
- The five-second clock and its timer cleanup are tested mounted, with fake timers.

Test
MEDIUM sentWaiting.ts:57: a send before the chat's first read compared a whole-second turn time with the millisecond send time, so the turn and its faded copy both stayed
The whole-second allowance now applies without a baseline too: a turn stamped 10:00:02 settles a send made at 10:00:02.500
sentWaiting.test.ts "settles a whole-second turn for a send made before the chat's first read"
MEDIUM ChatView.tsx / sentWaiting.ts: disconnect and reconnect never cleared the waiting store
New useWaitingSends hook: when the connection goes, that PC's waiting sends go too, before paint. Nothing is sent again, and nothing comes back on reconnect; the reconnect read says what became of the message
SentWaiting.test.tsx "lets a waiting send go when the connection does, and does not bring it back on reconnect" (mounted)
MEDIUM two role=status regions while a send waits
The bubble list has no live region of its own; the footer's existing status region is the only one, and the user's own words are not announced
SentWaiting.test.tsx "is no live region of its own"
LOW static-only clock tests
Mounted tests with fake timers: no clock at 4,999 ms, clock at 5,000 ms, and no timer left when the bubble goes first. Both fail when the timer effect is deleted
SentWaiting.test.tsx "mounted" block
The six earlier CodeRabbit threads are answered and resolved; all concerned code that was since withdrawn or rewritten.
…st read
Without turns shown before the send, a whole-second turn stamped in the send's own second may be an older message of that second (from the terminal or another device). It now settles the send only once a turn after it was written in a later second: an older message was answered before this send, since the agent was idle to take it immediately. The send's own turn settles it as soon as the agent's answer lands.
Review of 0141492 (one MEDIUM), resolved in 7569e84. bun run check fast on 7569e84: typecheck, build, unit 8438 pass / 0 fail.
M1: before the first read, an older identical turn in the same second cleared a new send's bubble. Rounding alone cannot tell that older turn from the send's own turn (both are one identical user turn stamped in the send's second, with no turns shown before the send). So without a baseline, such a turn now settles the send only once a turn after it was written in a later second. An older message was already answered before this send (the agent was idle to take it at once), so its answer cannot be in a later second; the send's own turn settles as soon as the agent's answer lands.
Tests (src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts), both failing on 0141492 first:
"keeps a new send waiting before the first read when only an older identical turn of the same second is there": the review's exact repro (repeat at 02.700, first read holds only an older repeat stamped 02), and the bubble settling once its own turn and answer arrive.
"settles a whole-second turn for a send made before the chat's first read once the agent answers it": the earlier own-first-read case, which now settles on the agent's answer instead of on the bare user turn.
Maintainer edit: merged main into this branch (2ee62ab, no force) so CI can run; the PR conflicted with main after #2301 landed. The only conflict was at the end of src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts, where #2301's test and this PR's tests both landed: both are kept. Checked before the push: useComposerSends and sentWaiting tests 55/55, typecheck clean. One unrelated server test (server/codex-processes.test.ts) timed out once under host load in the full fast check and passes on its own (107/107).
Merging 2ee62ab, thank you @CharleoYang! (Owner's go for the slim variant.) A sent message shows as the user's faded bubble until its turn appears in the transcript, with one quiet status line while it waits. The merge pass reviewed it strictly over several rounds (queued-input adjacent), and lane slim-2270 fixed the findings on the branch with maintainer edits: a duplicate bubble when the first read uses whole-second timestamps; the bubble surviving a reconnect (waiting sends are now dropped on disconnect and nothing is re-sent); two live status regions (now one); an older identical turn in the same second clearing a new send's bubble (fail-first test from the exact repro). Final head verified: 82 tests, typecheck clean, reconnect clears with zero automatic writes, one status region, the same-second repro keeps the new bubble. All six CodeRabbit threads addressed and resolved. Known limit (accepted for this round, follow-up #2334): until a later-second turn arrives the real user turn and its faded copy show together; it clears within about a second when the agent answers, otherwise at the 60 s expiry or on reconnect. Before the merge the merge pass merged main into the branch (2ee62ab, no force), keeping both #2301's and this PR's tests at the end of useComposerSends.test.ts.
## Problem
The owner tried #2327 on the main test app and prefers not to see its
**Live terminal** box in a Letta Code chat. What he wants instead is
Letta's in-progress messages appearing in the chat as they are written,
the way OmO, Codex and Claude Code look. That is being measured
separately, from Letta's own chunk logs, and is not guessed from the
terminal.
## Change
`git revert` of e5ed425 (#2327), client only, with no HTTP/WS contract
change:
- `ChatView` no longer mounts a live `TerminalFallback` under a running
`letta-transcript` turn. The live-turn arm (`nextLiveTurnArm`,
`liveTurnShown`, `turnOnlyInTerminal`) and its read counters are gone.
- `src/lib/lettaScreen.ts`, its fixtures and tests, the `.is-live` CSS
and the "Live terminal" chat strings are removed.
- `DESIGN.md`, `docs/guide.md` and the unreleased
`changelog.d/letta-native-chat.md` fragment are back to their wording
from before #2327. No release carried the box (no `v*` tag contains
e5ed425), so there is no separate changelog entry for removing it.
While Letta works, its chat shows the turns written so far and the usual
Working line. The turn appears when Letta writes it at the end, as it
did after #2312.
#2327 carried no unrelated fix: every line it changed served the box.
The one later commit on these files, ae3f080 (#2270, the faded
sent-waiting bubble), is kept intact.
## Verification
- **Real letta in the browser.** I used an isolated herdr session under
a temp HOME, letta 0.34.23 on its local backend with
gemini-3.1-flash-lite, and two Ovis servers on loopback (origin/main and
this branch) with their state in temp dirs, driven by Bun.WebView at
1280 px. The turn ran a Bash command and then wrote a 250-word story.
- Mid-turn, origin/main shows the Live terminal box under the turns.
- Mid-turn, this branch shows only `Working…` and no
`.chat-terminal-fallback`.
- After the turn, this branch shows the written turn:
`/api/pane/conversation` returns `letta-transcript` with 4 turns, and
the story is on screen.
- `bun run check fast` on 0eabe74: typecheck, build and unit tests are
all ok.
- No regression test was added. Nothing mounts ChatView in a unit test,
and the removed tests covered only the removed code. The browser
comparison is the before/after proof.
## Reviews
- omo-native-code-reviewer: **APPROVE**, no CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM
findings. It confirmed the exact inverse of #2327, #2270 preserved, no
dangling references and accurate docs. Its LOW note: one combined run of
the conventions/i18n test files failed 1 of 80 and passed on a rerun and
on each file alone. check fast was green.
- Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh: **APPROVE**, no findings (428 tests across
16 related files, typecheck green).

## Release 0.4.20
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
initially on main `bd676637a16471e8744d62c7311026ddb43a39eb` (#2335,
xterm 6), then merged with final-scope main
`ef482f2e66b3344658fb548fa1110744a92929c9` (#2338) and test-only
follow-up main `269e9ce19558b8d197959250075da56b25b9668f` (#2345):
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.20 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.20` initially folded
122 fragments into the 2026-10-29 section of `CHANGELOG.md`, linked
their PRs, and deleted the fragments. After merging main, the modified
`letta-native-chat.md` from #2338 was folded by hand with its current
wording and PR link. No other late fragment landed; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. Four additional entries for external PRs without their
own fragments bring the section to 157 entries.
- Added 22 `by @login` credits across all 19 outside-contributor PRs in
the release range. Preserved the existing credit to @Yoonwoo-Ha for
#1634. See the complete ancestry-based audit below.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines, matching 0.4.19's shape. They include the xterm 6
improvement: terminal frames no longer mix old and new output. Every
English line is at most 80 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 38 to 39 because
the bundle inputs changed since remote-v38.
- **Telemetry:** the guard confirms no Worker deploy or deployed
fingerprint update is needed.
- **iOS upload note:** CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION raised to 3 for App and
OvisNotifications (last uploaded: 2, source: `docs/native-app.md:99`,
commit `54fdadc1c65da5d50a6afef411e3ed8f23b6c255`). Both targets inherit
project-level Debug and Release settings, and every
`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` entry is 3. `app/store/ios.md` now records the
prepared build. This is the last documented upload, not a live App Store
Connect query; check for later uploads before uploading. The marketing
version remains 1.0.
- The changelog explicitly distinguishes delivery: removing WebKit's
form bar (#2109) requires the new iOS app build, while Korean
composition (#2307) comes with the PC update and needs no new iOS build.
The Korean-input summary says the same in all four languages, with no
change to list counts.
## Validation
- Final `dori heavy release-check -- bun run check fast`: passed, exit
0; workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit
suite (8,591 pass, 0 fail, 34 platform skips in 549 files). This is the
merged tree containing #2338, #2345, the contributor corrections and iOS
build 3.
- `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts
server/release-notes.test.ts`: 33 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.20`: passed, with all patch-note
lists and the full changelog.
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts` and CI mode with `--base
ef482f2`: passed on the final merged
tree: "Release 0.4.20: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --release 0.4.20`: expected exit 1 only
because "remote-v39 is not published." The merge pass publishes it after
merging.
## Merge pass
**Do not merge before the owner's OK.**
- [ ] Merge only after the owner's OK and required checks pass.
- [ ] After merging, push `remote-v39` on the merged commit and wait for
the **Remote PC bundles** workflow to publish the manifest and all
archives.
- [ ] Then run **Release** on `main` with version `0.4.20`, without `v`.
The Release workflow creates the app tag; do not push it by hand.
- [ ] From this PR's merge until the Release run is done, merge nothing
touching `server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock` or `patches/`.
- [ ] A changelog fragment merged after this PR must be moved into
0.4.20 by hand.
This lane stops at the open PR. No tag, workflow dispatch, merge or
telemetry deploy was performed.
**Completed release follow-up:** merged main `ef482f2e` including #2338
(`fix/letta-no-live-box`), folded its revised fragment into 0.4.20, and
retained the contributor-credit commit `184dc120` and iOS-build commit
`0ffa3d45`. The Letta summary already describes conversation support
without promising a live-terminal box, so it needs no change.
Merged test-only #2345 from main `269e9ce1`: the two usage browser
checks now wait for the earlier shared account-order save and start the
sign-in check from a cleared order. No product behavior or late fragment
was added; `changelog.d` still contains only `README.md`. The iOS
delivery clarification and resolved review thread are retained.
## Complete external-contributor audit
Checked every merged PR whose merge commit is in `git log
v0.4.19..origin/main`: 133 PRs through final-scope main `ef482f2e`, or
134 including test-only #2345 on `269e9ce1`, with 19 PRs by 12 external
non-bot authors. Both rescans found no additional external-author gaps;
#2345 is by the maintainer. Added the four missing entries: #2271 and
#2274 by @CharleoYang, #2290 by @DravenDou, and #2282 by @fivetaku. The
tab-reopening summary now includes the history-page improvement in all
four languages; list counts remain 5/5/5.
Full external PR list checked: #1911@jjsteffen; #2068@YuuuXie; #2072@Noobear; #2087@JJLiebig; #2145@mattmarcin; #2176@jpcarranza94; #2231@philipprass-prog; #2235@vuongnmhvn; #2270, #2271, #2274@CharleoYang;
#2278@jpcarranza94; #2282@fivetaku; #2283, #2292, #2293@YuuuXie;
#2301@jpcarranza94; #2321@kilhyeonjun. Every PR has a linked `by
@login` credit in 0.4.20.

…2334) (#2365)
Closes#2334.
## Problem
Follow-up from #2270 (the faded waiting bubble, thanks again
@CharleoYang). A message sent from Chat before the chat's first
conversation read has no baseline: the chat had shown no turns to tell
an older message from the new one. With a transcript that keeps
whole-second times, the send's own user turn is stamped in the send's
own second. Since #2270's review (M1), such a turn settled the bubble
only once a turn in a later second had been written after it. When
nothing came after it (an idle agent, an answer that never starts), the
chat showed the real turn and its faded copy for up to a minute.
## Change
`src/lib/sentWaiting.ts` `newerThanSend`, no-baseline whole-second
branch only: a matching user turn of the send's second also settles the
send when it is the last turn of the read, with no turn at all after it,
dated or not.
Why this is proven, not guessed: a waiting send is recorded only for a
confirmed immediate send, so the agent was idle to take it. An older
identical message of that second had therefore already been answered
before this send, and something follows it in the transcript within that
second. That is the premise the existing later-second rule already rests
on. A same-second turn followed by any turn, including an undated one,
still waits as before, so #2270's M1 case (an older identical turn of
the same second, answered before the send) keeps the new send's bubble.
Nothing reads the screen.
Known limits (LOW), each needing the same words sent twice within one
whole second before the chat's first read:
- The agent answers the new send within its own second and writes
nothing more. Then `[turn, answer]` reads exactly like #2270's M1 case
(an older message that was already answered), so the copy stays until a
turn in a later second arrives or the minute runs out. This is unchanged
from main.
- An older identical message whose answer the transcript never kept
(Grok stopped while thinking), or a first read that was requested before
the older message was answered and arrives after the send. In both, the
bubble goes a moment before its own turn shows. Nothing shows twice and
nothing is lost. Codex reproduced both, and both are noted in the code
comment. Closing the second one would mean carrying each read's request
time through ChatView's read path, which is out of proportion for an
input this rare.
## Evidence
- `src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts` "settles a whole-second turn for a send
made before the chat's first read on the turn itself when nothing was
written after it" fails on main `10855e0b` and passes here. The earlier
test that pinned the double ("…once the agent answers it") is split into
this one and "…once a turn after it is in a later second" (same-second
answer still waits).
- New "keeps a send made before the chat's first read waiting past a
same-second turn with an undated turn after it": it fails when `last` is
replaced with `Number.isNaN(answeredAt)` (mutation checked).
- `sentWaiting`, `SentWaiting` and `useComposerSends` tests: 63 pass / 0
fail. `bun run typecheck`: exit 0.
- Real app on the demo transport (no herdr session). The chat's first
read was held, a message was sent from the composer, then the read was
served as a whole-second transcript whose last turn is that send: on
main the turn shows twice (1 waiting copy), at 1280 and 390 px; on this
branch it shows once (0 waiting copies). No page errors.
- `bun run check fast` on the final head: `433ee6ed`: typecheck, build,
unit 8661 pass / 0 fail (35 skipped).
- Reviews:
- **omo-native-code-reviewer: APPROVE**, with no critical, high or
medium findings. It raised two LOWs about comment wording (the
older-turn-answered premise, and what `last` means); both are fixed in
the comment.
- **Codex Sol 6.1 (fast, xhigh): no verdict.** It hit "Selected model is
at capacity" twice, and the second run ended without a report. Its
scratch tests reproduced the two same-second counterexamples above. Both
fail on this branch and pass on main, and both need the same words twice
in one second before the first read, so they are listed as known limits.
Under the lane rule, the merge pass reviews this head.

## Change
Fixes#2537.
In a chat long enough to scroll, a message sent from Chat now shows its
faded bubble at the end, wholly above the composer. The chat no longer
jumps by that gap when the turn arrives. A long message's bubble shows
the same 12 lines as its turn, not its first 160 characters.
- `src/components/ChatTimeline.tsx`: a ResizeObserver on the list's
footer, through a callback ref that returns its cleanup. It acts when
the footer grew and the reader follows the end with no click layout held
(`following`, `manualLayout`). Then it drops the list's waiting scroll
request and sets `scrollTop` to the end. ResizeObserver callbacks run
after layout and before paint, so no frame shows the bubble short.
- The list's `scrollToEnd` reads the footer size before the list
measures the grown footer, and it keeps that target until its scroll
settles. A native scroll alone loses to it. A request for no row drops
it without a move, as ChatView already does (`dropPendingListScroll`).
- A reader who scrolled up, paged or opened something does not follow.
Neither does a minimap jump or a restored place. So the observer never
moves them. A click a following reader made (`manualLayout`) also keeps
its layout.
- A footer that shrinks does nothing. The turn's row follows through
`onItemSizeChanged`, as before.
- `src/lib/followScroll.ts`: `dropPendingListScroll` moves here from
ChatView, so ChatTimeline uses the same function. No change to it.
- `src/components/SentWaiting.tsx`: the bubble shows the whole message.
When `shouldFoldUserMessage` says the turn's card folds, the bubble gets
`is-capped`, the same 12-line cap. The fade at the cut and "Show full
message" come with the turn. `UserMessage` measures the cut before it
fades the last line: in a wide chat, a message past 900 characters can
fit in 12 lines.
- `src/components/ChatView.tsx`: the import, and one comment line where
its ResizeObserver ignores growth that only adds height.
- `changelog.d/chat-sent-bubble-end.md`.
The design follows T3 Code. It shows a sent message at once as a user
row in its timeline (`optimisticUserMessages`). That row has the same
collapse rule as the stored message. Ovis's 12-line fold already comes
from T3 Code's `shouldCollapseUserMessage`. This PR keeps the footer
bubble from #2270, so the bubble is not yet a row. The remainder is
listed in the issue: plain text against Markdown, the 20 px before-user
gap and the meta line. A timeline row for the waiting send covers all of
them.
## Validation
- **Red/green, browser.**
`scripts/chat-local-send-follow-demo-regression.ts` has a new first
case. A reader at the end of the demo's long chat sends, with the
transcript reads held. The case records each painted frame and fails
when one paints the bubble short of the end. A painted frame is the rAF
state, replaced by the state after that frame's ResizeObserver
callbacks.
- `main` (8d28829): fails in 3 of 3 runs. One run painted all 11 frames
with a 65 px end gap and the bubble 11 px under the view's edge. Two
runs painted 1 such frame.
- This branch: passes in 3 of 3 runs, every frame at the end. The 8
older cases pass too.
- **Red/green, unit.** `src/components/SentWaiting.test.tsx` has a new
test: a 20-line message shows whole, with `is-capped`.
- `main`: fails. The bubble shows the message cut at "Step 4: ru…" (160
characters).
- This branch: 7 pass.
- **A trace demo** (24 filler turns, reads held, two sends): painted
frames that show the bubble short of the end.
- 1280×800: `main` 2 (65 px end gap, the bubble 11 px under the edge),
this branch 0.
- 390×844: `main` 2 (33 px end gap, the bubble still above the edge),
this branch 0.
- **A long-message demo** (9 paragraphs, 1267 characters): the bubble's
height, the card's height, and the settled move when the turn arrives.
- 1280×800: `main` 125 → 347 px, −234 px. This branch 323 → 347 px, −36
px.
- 390×844: `main` 175 → 347 px, −208 px. This branch 323 → 347 px, −60
px.
- The first rAF sample of the card is off the top (−454 px here, −58 px
on `main`). A ResizeObserver trace shows the list corrects it before
paint on both.
- **Live evidence from my test runs** (real Chrome, a desktop chat that
scrolls, `main` at feb3ae0): 7 of 7 sends painted the bubble short of
the end. The end gap was 31–56 px, with 11–36 px of the bubble hidden
for 65–1133 ms. Then the chat jumped 77–168 px. The issue has the table.
- **Chat scroll regressions on this branch:**
- `scripts/chat-local-send-follow-demo-regression.ts`: 9 pass, 3 runs.
- `scripts/chat-scroll-padding-regression.ts`: pass, 150 adjustments, no
padding left.
- `scripts/ui-regression.ts`, which holds the follow-focus regression,
through `bun run check run --build` on an isolated herdr. Two runs on
this branch and one on `main` give the same 31 PASS lines, follow-focus
among them. All three then stop at the same step: "Timed out: explicit
Send now delivered one item".
- `scripts/chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts`: fails on this Mac on `main` too,
at a different step each run (the grow-above glide, the composer-height
anchor, the sliding-page anchor). `main` failed 5 of 5 runs, this branch
6 of 6, with the Playwright headless shell linked to the cached 1234
build. Across the runs, this branch passed each of the 14 checks of the
1440 dark pass at least once, the same 14 as `main`. One run with a log
line in the new observer passed those 14 checks, then failed at the
sliding-page anchor as `main` does. The observer did not move the view
once in that run.
- `bun run typecheck`: pass.
- Unit files, 138 pass: `src/components/SentWaiting.test.tsx` 7,
`src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts` 30, `src/lib/userMessageFold.test.ts` 7,
`src/lib/followScroll.test.ts` 3, `src/lib/useComposerSends.test.ts` 30,
`src/lib/i18n.test.ts` 22, `src/conventions.test.ts` 8,
`scripts/conventions.test.ts` 19, `scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts` 12.
- Not run: `bun run check fast`. On this Mac it hangs on
`server/usage-login-private`. I did not run these files, which also fail
on `main` here: `scripts/check`, `scripts/self-hosted-runner`,
`scripts/install-star`, `scripts/ci-browser`,
`scripts/ci-browser-parallel`, `server/codex`, `server/codex-processes`,
`server/session-history`, `server/letta`, `server/remote-entry`,
`server/core/composer-framing`, `server/usage-login-private`, and
sometimes `server/bridge`.
- Changelog fragment: `changelog.d/chat-sent-bubble-end.md`.

Problem
Claude records a user turn only when its next turn starts, so between Send and that moment the chat showed nothing of the message just sent: only "Working…". On an ordinary PC that gap is 0.3–0.5 s; on a slow or remote PC whose transcript arrives late it lasts seconds.
Change
A message sent from Chat shows at once as the user's own bubble, the way a messenger does it (the Claude and ChatGPT apps, iMessage):
--text-dim. Nothing is written under it. When the agent writes the turn, the turn takes its place, so the bubble reads as coming up to full strength./cost,! ls) gets none, since it never comes back as that user turn. A bubble whose turn has not come within a minute goes.No new setting, no row beyond the bubble, and no live region of its own: the chat footer keeps its one quiet status region.

Earlier rounds also read the pane's input box (
?draft=1), settled lost receipts from an empty box, and turnedsubmit_partialinto an informational note.
