fix(push): say why Turn alerts on again failed, and let the alerts notice be dismissed - #2145
On a device that cannot make a push subscription, the alerts notice from #1995 says "This device's push subscription is missing. Turn alerts on again." and stays there for good:
enableNotifications caught the subscribe error (or got null when the service worker never came up) and returned false, so the repair was recorded as failed.
The look that follows found the same missing fault, and refreshPushHealth keeps a result only when no fault is found, so the failed was dropped. The button flickered to "Turning alerts on…" and back, and nothing said why. Settings' hint also checked health.problem === "missing" before failed.
The notice could not be dismissed.
Reported on Brave, where pushManager.subscribe() rejects until "Use Google services for push messaging" is on (it is off by default). Before #1995 this state was silent (alerts stayed tab-only), so it surfaced with v0.4.19.
Change
enableNotifications returns a PushActionResult instead of a boolean. A repair that makes no subscription says why: refused (the browser's PushManager or the app's plugin would not make one), no-worker (no error, but the service worker never came up) or unregistered (the PC answered with an error, or was not reached). subscribeFailure maps the error, and a retired endpoint the browser keeps handing over stays gone.
refreshPushHealth keeps such a reason while the fault can still be repaired (health.repair), and drops it once a subscription works. A test's line is still dropped by a later fault, as before.
The notice and Settings → Alerts show the reason through one helper, repairFailureText. In Brave it names the setting to turn on. The repair button stays, since a reload or a changed setting can let it through.
The notice gets the same dismiss button as the update notice. The dismissal is stored per device (ovis:push-notice-dismissed) for that fault. It ends when a different fault appears, when the server answers for a held subscription with no fault (alerts working), or when alerts are turned off (or the device locks). A look that saw nothing (no worker yet, an older server) keeps it. Settings goes on telling the fault.
New strings are in ja/ko/zh. Changelog fragment push-repair-failure-reason.md.
Tests
src/lib/pushHealth.test.ts: a failed repair's reason survives the next look at the same fault and leaves once alerts work. A dismissal holds through the same fault and through a look that saw nothing, and ends on another fault, on a working look and on a reset, with its storage.
src/lib/useNotifications.test.ts: subscribeFailure tells a DOMException or plugin error, an ApiError or network failure, and a retired endpoint apart.
src/components/PushHealthNotice.test.tsx: the notice shows the reason (and the Brave setting in Brave), keeps the repair button, and renders nothing once dismissed.
Checks run locally (Windows 11)
Generated types, generated themes, typecheck and build passed in bun run check fast. The run was stopped during unit tests because the machine ran low on memory, so its unit-test step did not complete here.
The touched tests pass: bun test src/lib/pushHealth.test.ts src/lib/push.test.ts src/lib/useNotifications.test.ts src/components/PushHealthNotice.test.tsx src/lib/i18n.test.ts scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts.
src/conventions.test.ts fails two cases on Windows only ("uses tokens only" and the icon ?v= query), because the scan yields src\styles.css paths. This also happens on main and is unrelated to this PR.
Not run: scripts/push-health-demo-regression.ts (browser). It looks for the notice's buttons by name, so the added Dismiss button should not affect it.
…tice be dismissed
On a device that cannot make a push subscription (Brave with its push
service off, a service worker that never comes up), the repair failed
silently: enableNotifications swallowed the error, and the look after it
found the same "missing" fault and dropped the "failed" result. The button
flickered and the notice, which could not be closed, came back unchanged.
enableNotifications now returns why it made no subscription (refused,
no-worker, unregistered), and that reason stays the notice's and Settings'
line while the fault it was meant to mend stands. The notice gets a dismiss
button, remembered per device for its fault until another fault, a look
that finds alerts working, or alerts turned off.

New Features
Push-alert notices now explain common repair failures, including browser or device rejection, an unavailable page service worker, and subscription problems.
You can dismiss a notice on your device for the current issue. It returns if a different issue appears or alerts are working again; Settings continues to show the problem.
Repair guidance is available in Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
Push repair now returns specific failure outcomes. Push health retains repair results and tracks per-device notice dismissal. The alerts notice and Settings display failure reasons, with translations added for Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.

Summary
Classify subscription and repair outcomes src/lib/pushHealth.ts, src/lib/useNotifications.ts, src/lib/useNotifications.test.ts
Subscription errors and repair attempts now produce specific outcomes, including refusal, missing service worker, and unregistered subscription. Tests cover the subscription-error classifications.
Retain repair results and dismissed faults src/lib/pushHealth.ts, src/lib/pushHealth.test.ts
Push health retains failed-repair results while the fault remains. Dismissals persist per device and clear when a different fault appears, health is restored, or state is reset.
The notice and Settings show repair failure guidance. The notice can be dismissed for the current fault. Settings and repair controls use the specific repair result, and translations and tests cover the messages and dismissal behavior.
When a service worker is unavailable, users can lose the explanation and repair action they need. A later fault can also display the wrong explanation. Resolve these before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2127] Objective: a repair that makes no subscription states why. Implemented in src/lib/useNotifications.ts. enableNotifications returns PushActionResult. subscribeFailure maps a thrown error to: ApiError subscription_gone to gone; other ApiError or TypeError (network) to unregistered; any other error (browser PushManager rejection, app plugin error) to refused. A null endpoint returns no-worker when pushSupported() is true, else unsupported. src/lib/push.ts bounds the service worker wait at 10 s, so the no-worker path is reachable. The repair flow calls repairOutcome, so the result reaches runPushAction.
[#2127] Objective: the reason stays while the fault can be repaired. src/lib/pushHealth.ts refreshPushHealth keeps a failed-repair result while health.repair is true, and drops it once no repair is possible or a subscription works. A test result still drops on a later fault.
[#2127] Objective: the reason is shown in the notice and in Settings → Alerts. PushHealthNotice and PushTestControls both call repairFailureText before the generic fault text. Brave text names the setting. The repair button remains.
[#2127] Objective: the notice is dismissible per device for the same fault. dismissPushNotice stores ovis:push-notice-dismissed. keptDismissal ends the dismissal on a different fault, on a look with a server status and no fault, and resetPushHealth clears it. A look that saw nothing keeps it. Settings still reports the fault because the dismissal only affects the notice.
[#2127] Objective: the reasons are covered by tests. The PR description lists tests in src/lib/pushHealth.test.ts, src/lib/useNotifications.test.ts and src/components/PushHealthNotice.test.tsx. I did not run them. This verdict rests on source inspection.
Residual: a repair that returns unsupported is not in the repair failure set, so the notice shows no reason for it. I did not verify whether classifyPushHealth can report a repairable missing fault when push is unsupported. This does not block the verdict.

Explanation
Every changed file serves an objective of #2127. src/lib/pushHealth.ts and src/lib/useNotifications.ts hold the reason, retention and dismissal logic. src/components/PushHealthNotice.tsx and src/components/PushTestControls.tsx show the reason and the dismiss button. src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx only changes the callback type to Promise<PushActionResult>, which the new result type requires. src/lib/i18n.ja.ts, src/lib/i18n.ko.ts and src/lib/i18n.zh.ts add the new strings. changelog.d/push-repair-failure-reason.md is the changelog fragment for the fix. The tests cover the new behavior. No change was found that is unrelated to the issue.

Thanks for this fix, @mattmarcin. The merge pass reviewed it strictly as an external PR with omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex. They reproduced three MEDIUM findings on 7728f15, which the merge pass fixed on this branch:
A failed repair's reason (such as no-worker) now stays until alerts are proven working, alerts are turned off, another fault replaces it, or a new repair runs. The next refresh used to erase it, taking the reload advice and the Settings repair button with it.
Recovery seen in any open tab now clears a stored dismissal. Dismissals reach other tabs through storage events, which read the stored value rather than replaying the event's value.
7d2a016: DESIGN.md now describes the dismissible notice. It used to say "Not dismissible".
Six regression tests fail on 7728f15 and pass here, and bun run check fast passes. Both reviewers pass 7d2a016 with LOW notes only, and the required checks are green. CodeRabbit did not review this head. The LOW notes go to a follow-up issue.
CodeRabbit's thread on 7728f15 (the no-worker reason and a reason kept across a different fault) is answered and resolved: 47525b2 fixed both.
## Release 0.4.20
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
initially on main `bd676637a16471e8744d62c7311026ddb43a39eb` (#2335,
xterm 6), then merged with final-scope main
`ef482f2e66b3344658fb548fa1110744a92929c9` (#2338) and test-only
follow-up main `269e9ce19558b8d197959250075da56b25b9668f` (#2345):
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.20 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.20` initially folded
122 fragments into the 2026-10-29 section of `CHANGELOG.md`, linked
their PRs, and deleted the fragments. After merging main, the modified
`letta-native-chat.md` from #2338 was folded by hand with its current
wording and PR link. No other late fragment landed; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. Four additional entries for external PRs without their
own fragments bring the section to 157 entries.
- Added 22 `by @login` credits across all 19 outside-contributor PRs in
the release range. Preserved the existing credit to @Yoonwoo-Ha for
#1634. See the complete ancestry-based audit below.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines, matching 0.4.19's shape. They include the xterm 6
improvement: terminal frames no longer mix old and new output. Every
English line is at most 80 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 38 to 39 because
the bundle inputs changed since remote-v38.
- **Telemetry:** the guard confirms no Worker deploy or deployed
fingerprint update is needed.
- **iOS upload note:** CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION raised to 3 for App and
OvisNotifications (last uploaded: 2, source: `docs/native-app.md:99`,
commit `54fdadc1c65da5d50a6afef411e3ed8f23b6c255`). Both targets inherit
project-level Debug and Release settings, and every
`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` entry is 3. `app/store/ios.md` now records the
prepared build. This is the last documented upload, not a live App Store
Connect query; check for later uploads before uploading. The marketing
version remains 1.0.
- The changelog explicitly distinguishes delivery: removing WebKit's
form bar (#2109) requires the new iOS app build, while Korean
composition (#2307) comes with the PC update and needs no new iOS build.
The Korean-input summary says the same in all four languages, with no
change to list counts.
## Validation
- Final `dori heavy release-check -- bun run check fast`: passed, exit
0; workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit
suite (8,591 pass, 0 fail, 34 platform skips in 549 files). This is the
merged tree containing #2338, #2345, the contributor corrections and iOS
build 3.
- `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts
server/release-notes.test.ts`: 33 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.20`: passed, with all patch-note
lists and the full changelog.
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts` and CI mode with `--base
ef482f2`: passed on the final merged
tree: "Release 0.4.20: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --release 0.4.20`: expected exit 1 only
because "remote-v39 is not published." The merge pass publishes it after
merging.
## Merge pass
**Do not merge before the owner's OK.**
- [ ] Merge only after the owner's OK and required checks pass.
- [ ] After merging, push `remote-v39` on the merged commit and wait for
the **Remote PC bundles** workflow to publish the manifest and all
archives.
- [ ] Then run **Release** on `main` with version `0.4.20`, without `v`.
The Release workflow creates the app tag; do not push it by hand.
- [ ] From this PR's merge until the Release run is done, merge nothing
touching `server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock` or `patches/`.
- [ ] A changelog fragment merged after this PR must be moved into
0.4.20 by hand.
This lane stops at the open PR. No tag, workflow dispatch, merge or
telemetry deploy was performed.
**Completed release follow-up:** merged main `ef482f2e` including #2338
(`fix/letta-no-live-box`), folded its revised fragment into 0.4.20, and
retained the contributor-credit commit `184dc120` and iOS-build commit
`0ffa3d45`. The Letta summary already describes conversation support
without promising a live-terminal box, so it needs no change.
Merged test-only #2345 from main `269e9ce1`: the two usage browser
checks now wait for the earlier shared account-order save and start the
sign-in check from a cleared order. No product behavior or late fragment
was added; `changelog.d` still contains only `README.md`. The iOS
delivery clarification and resolved review thread are retained.
## Complete external-contributor audit
Checked every merged PR whose merge commit is in `git log
v0.4.19..origin/main`: 133 PRs through final-scope main `ef482f2e`, or
134 including test-only #2345 on `269e9ce1`, with 19 PRs by 12 external
non-bot authors. Both rescans found no additional external-author gaps;
#2345 is by the maintainer. Added the four missing entries: #2271 and
#2274 by @CharleoYang, #2290 by @DravenDou, and #2282 by @fivetaku. The
tab-reopening summary now includes the history-page improvement in all
four languages; list counts remain 5/5/5.
