feat(chat): a message leaves the box the moment it is sent, and shows in the chat as sending - #319
Haeminway1 wants to merge 9 commits into
Conversation
… in the chat as sending Send kept the text in the box until the pane acknowledged it (agent.prompt's paste, its 300ms gap and the Enter), and the chat showed it only once the agent's conversation file recorded it, so every send read as a lag. Now the box empties at once and the message shows in the chat as "Sending…", then "Sent", until the transcript holds it (or 20s, for a pane whose transcript never will). A send the pane refuses comes back to the box, in front of anything typed since, with the reason. The server's gaps that keep the Enter from being taken for a newline are unchanged. The 10 focused draft/outbox tests and typecheck pass, but a reload before acknowledgement loses the submitted draft. I reproduced this with two ComposerDraftStore instances sharing the same storage: dispatch removes the stored value and the replacement store reads an empty draft. Please preserve recoverable pending text across page reloads before merging.
…n pane shows it until its screen does Send took the message out of the stored draft at once, so a page that closed before the pane answered lost it. It now waits in storage beside the draft until the pane takes or refuses it; a page opened meanwhile puts it back in front of the draft and says it was not confirmed. A pane read from its screen keeps the sent message until that screen changes, or the retention limit, rather than dropping it the moment the pane took it. ChatView kept, per message on its way, the user turns already there when it went out, and let go of them only when it retired the message itself. A message the pane refused left the outbox elsewhere, so its set stayed for as long as the view did. Both per-message maps now drop whatever belongs to a message no longer in the outbox. The original single-tab reload case is fixed. All 13 focused tests pass; an isolated merge with current main also passes typecheck and 19 relevant tests. However, an independently reproduced two-tab send/acknowledgement sequence still loses a pending message on reload, while current main preserves it. Please address pending-record ownership before merging.

[P2] Clear only the pending record owned by this send
The recovery key is shared by every tab displaying this pane, but end() removes it without checking which send wrote it. With two already-open tabs, dispatch A in the first tab and B in the second: the stored :unconfirmed value is now B. When A is acknowledged, this line deletes B’s only durable copy. Reloading the second tab before B is acknowledged then returns an empty draft. I reproduced this with two actual ComposerDraftStore instances sharing storage and refresh() calls for storage synchronization; the equivalent lifecycle on current main retains B. Persist pending messages with ownership/identity so one tab cannot overwrite or clear another tab’s unconfirmed send, and cover the overlapping two-tab sends plus reload case.

Thank you for this, and for the care you put into the follow-up fixes. The lag you describe is real, and the optimistic bubble is a nice idea. After going back and forth on it, I'm going to close this one. The reasons:
So the gain is smaller than the risk and the upkeep, for this app. If the send still feels like the tap didn't take, I think the smaller answer is to show it on the Send button: it is already disabled while a send is on its way, it just doesn't look any different from an empty box. A change like that keeps the text where it is and has nothing to lose. Your other PRs have been a real help. Thanks again, and sorry to turn this one down after the work you did on it. |
## Change While a chat message waits for acknowledgement, the Send button looks the same as it does with an empty draft. Following the maintainer's [suggestion in #319](#319 (comment)), the button now shows a small stepped progress ring, with an accessible "sending" name and a busy state. With reduced motion the ring stays static. Draft retention and the handling of acknowledgements and refusals work as before. ## Validation - `bun run typecheck` passes. - Targeted draft, i18n, CSS/motion, script convention and changelog tests: 62 pass, 0 fail. - `bun scripts/composer-fit-demo-regression.ts` passes, and its held-receipt assertion failed before the fix. It covers success and refusal, unchanged button bounds, all six palettes, reduced motion, Claude and Codex, desktop and phone, and dark and light themes. - I reviewed eight screenshots made from fictional demo data. --------- Co-authored-by: Hako <devswha@gmail.com>
Why
Every send reads as a lag. The text stays in the box until the pane acknowledges it:
agent.promptpastes, waits its 300ms, then presses Enter. Even after that, the chat only shows the message once the agent's conversation file records it. On a phone this feels like the tap didn't take.Change
composerDrafts.dispatchtakes the sent text out at once.lib/outbox.tsmatches on normalized text. A pane whose transcript never will hold it (a shell) drops it after 20s.composerDrafts.restoreputs the text back in front of anything typed since, and the reason shows as before. An unconfirmed send (timeout) also restores the text, with the existing "check the terminal" note. This replaces "only acknowledged text leaves the draft". Text typed after a send stays exactly as typed.
Validation
composerDraft.test.ts: dispatch empties the box and blocks a second send; restore puts the text back before newer text, and does nothing after success.outbox.test.ts: matching ignores whitespace and handles long messages.ui-regression.tssends with the acknowledgement held. It checks that:test:ui: 34 PASS, with the step that also fails on a cleanmainhere taken out (Control+Shift+ArrowUp leaves the pane).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
