fix(cli): t3 up's retry and restart hints keep --base-dir - #30480
t3 up --base-dir <dir> drops --base-dir from two next steps it prints: "Fix that, then run t3 up again." after a failed service update, and "Run t3 service restart" after you decline the restart that turns T3 Connect off. Both commands then run against the default ~/.t3 home instead of the one you are setting up.
Change
In apps/server/src/cli/up.ts, both hints now go through resolveHostCliCommand with the same --base-dir arguments the pairing hint has used since #29684. The retry hint becomes t3 up --base-dir <dir> and the restart hint becomes t3 service restart --base-dir <dir> (t3 service restart takes --base-dir through projectLocationFlags). Both are resolved only on the branch that prints them, the way printServeCommand is.
Like the pairing and serve hints, these two now also print the runner form (npx t3@… up) or this install's launcher when that is how the CLI ran. Without --base-dir and run as plain t3, the text is unchanged.
What the bare hints did: the bare t3 up sets up the default home rather than retrying the one that failed. The bare t3 service restart looks for the service in the default home; on a machine whose service belongs to the --base-dir home it restarts nothing and prints "T3 Code service is not installed.", so T3 Connect stays on. Open #29848 rewords that message but does not touch these hints.
Scope and approval
This finishes what #29684 ("t3 up's pairing hint keeps --base-dir") left for later. That PR fixed the t3 pair hint in the same setUp function and said: "The other t3 up hints on failure paths and the hints in t3 service/t3 connect are not changed." This PR covers the two failure-path hints. It is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug: two printed hints, with no contract, setting or other behaviour change.
Three bare hints that t3 up --base-dir can still print are left for a follow-up, because two of them come from formatSetup, which t3 status shares: "Run t3 connect.", "t3 up --no-lan" and "Run t3 to use T3 Code here."
No open PR changes these hints. #29848 and #23878 are related but edit other files.
Verification
The existing row a failed update keeps service.env matching the old service in apps/server/src/cli/up.test.ts already runs t3 up --base-dir <baseDir>, and its expected text pinned the bare hint. It now expects the hint with --base-dir. The restart hint has no test of its own: that branch needs a terminal, a T3 Connect link whose live unlink fails, and a "no" answer, which this table cannot drive. It uses the same call as the retry hint.
Printed hint in that row, before and after:
main: Fix that, then run `t3 up` again.
branch: Fix that, then run `t3 up --base-dir /tmp/t3-up-test-…` again.
On main with only the test commit, vp test run apps/server/src/cli/up.test.ts:
× restarts the service only when it must: a failed update keeps service.env match…
AssertionError: expected 'Updating T3 Code. Running agent turns…' to contain 'Fix that, then run `t3 up --base-dir …'
Tests 1 failed | 21 passed (22)
With the fix: Tests 22 passed (22).
On Windows, #29684's the local network opens row already fails on main, and the changed row fails the same way with this fix. resolveHostCliCommand quotes each word for PowerShell (t3 up "--base-dir" "C:\…"), and the expected text is the POSIX form. CI runs the server tests on Ubuntu, where both pass. The red and green runs above were made on Windows with two uncommitted test edits that make it behave like CI: the platform set to linux and the temp baseDir written with forward slashes.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql and typecheck pass. Its test step fails only on those two rows, for the Windows quoting reason above.
Not checked: a real t3 up run, which would replace this machine's service.
Bug: t3 up's retry and restart hints drop --base-dir
This was written with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, driven from T3 Code.
`t3 up --base-dir <dir>` sets up the service for that T3 home, and since
pingdotgg#29684 its pairing hint carries the flag. Two other hints it prints still
named the bare command: after a failed service update it said to run
`t3 up` again, and after a declined restart it said to run
`t3 service restart`. Both run against the default home, not the one being
set up: the bare retry sets up the default home, and the bare restart
finds no service there and restarts nothing.
Both hints now resolve through resolveHostCliCommand with the same
--base-dir arguments as the pairing hint.
Bug: t3 up's retry and restart hints drop --base-dir
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Retry and restart hints now preserve the selected base directory using the existing command formatter. This changes displayed instructions without changing service execution or product defaults.

The service setup failure and declined-restart instructions now use resolved CLI commands with base-directory arguments. The failed-update test expects the retry instruction to include --base-dir <baseDir>.

Summary
Resolve retry and restart commands apps/server/src/cli/up.ts, apps/server/src/cli/up.test.ts
The failure and restart instructions use resolved commands with base-directory arguments. The test expects the retry instruction to include --base-dir <baseDir>.
The restart hint should have focused coverage to prevent regressions in --base-dir instructions.

Verified the failed-update retry path on Linux at 0f08058918f2ca90ffdbc038e7a54940ee631802, after reproducing the bug on github/main (d51bc58f5e). No code changes required.
Installed the actual background service through service install --base-dir '/home/user/pr30480 home'. Ran the source CLI's up --base-dir '/home/user/pr30480 home' --no-lan --yes with an unavailable session-bus directory to trigger a real service-manager prerequisite failure.
main: Fix that, then run `t3 up` again.
pr: Fix that, then run `t3 up --base-dir '/home/user/pr30480 home'` again.
The failed update preserved T3CODE_LAN=true in that home's service.env. Retrying with the normal session bus successfully restarted the service and changed that same home to T3CODE_LAN=false. The pairing hint also retained the quoted base directory. Command transcript.
Started the exact PR's dev server with an isolated home. Using repository Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome, added a real git repo through the web client's project picker, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed an initial turn and a follow-up through the real provider. This checks the client/provider path; the CLI transcript above proves the changed hint.
Blacksmith checks passed: the 22 existing up tests, then vp run check:changed against the PR base with format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck, and 25 tests across 3 files green. Existing PR CI reports 31 successful checks.
Not verified
The declined-restart hint requires a genuine managed T3 Connect link, a failed live unlink, and declining the terminal restart prompt. This source build reports connect: null (T3 Connect unavailable), and this task has no Connect authorization, so that changed branch remains unverified.
Windows/PowerShell quoting, macOS/launchd, native iOS/Android, and npm-runner/standalone-launcher variants were not exercised on this Linux VM.
