test: add offline fixtures for claude-cli schema-constrained output - #7908
Extend the Claude CLI offline fixtures for tool replay, plain JSON output, refusal/protocol errors, unsupported schema behavior, result identifiers, cancellation and cleanup. No runtime behavior or schema-support claim is added.
The maintainer carry preserves original contributor commits, merges dev b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf in e68281a93, and strengthens the tests in ecd06de1f015391e4e568e20abd3543ca1f5d58b:
Perform a real two-turn tool round trip: first finish with authoritative message_stop / done(tool_use), then replay the returned ID and client result on stdin and inspect the final plain JSON and terminal completion.
Pass an actual AbortController signal, abort after the first streamed text, and assert child termination, abort error, no successful done, destroyed stdin and prompt-file cleanup.
Keep the fixture stream open and observe tool callbacks before delivering the tool-turn stop; assert successful completion and no error afterward.
Inspect actual stdin for the mismatched historical result ID and complete the authoritative tool-stop handshake. Existing orphan-ID and invalid-model-JSON fixtures remain intact.
Verification
Bun 1.4.4, frozen dependencies, OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1; only one Bun test process at a time.
RED against the previous fixture setup: bun test tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts --test-name-pattern '1. tool-use round trip|7. cancellation' --timeout 30000 — 0 pass / 2 fail / 54 filtered. No tool result was written on the supposed round trip; manual kill emitted process_exit_error rather than an abort.
During correction, the four-file run reported 83 pass / 3 fail: new success assertions caught missing authoritative stops in the mismatched-ID and timing fixtures, plus an incorrect exact abort-label expectation. The fixtures and label were corrected; no production assertion was weakened or skipped.
Final bun test tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts tests/providers/claude-cli-tool-capture.test.ts tests/providers/claude-cli-efficiency.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 30000 — 86 pass / 0 fail, 442 assertions.
bun run typecheck — pass, 2,228 files. This command typechecks production source; the focused Bun executions are the test-file validation.
bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check — pass.
Full-suite exception: this shared Windows carry lane is explicitly restricted to focused files. NOT RUN: bun run test, broad test:changed, live Claude CLI/provider turns and cross-platform runtime checks. Broader coverage remains for repository CI. This is fixture correction and coverage, not a production runtime fix. No workflow dispatch, CI rerun, label change or fork-CI approval was performed.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed; test-only change, no user-facing behavior change.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Synthetic offline fixtures only; no credentials or runtime auth changes.
Review readiness checklist
Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

Walkthrough
The change adds offline fixture tests for Claude CLI output, tool-call handling, cancellation, event emission, and prompt-file cleanup. It changes test expectations only; the adapter implementation does not change.
Changes: Claude CLI adapter fixtures
Layer / File(s)
Summary
CLI output and tool-call expectations tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts
Adds fixtures for tool-use events, text completion, refusal, malformed or truncated output, schema handling, and orphaned or mismatched tool-result IDs. Adds local helpers to serialize text deltas and configure adapter fixtures.
Cancellation and turn lifecycle expectations tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts
Adds fixtures that check child-process cancellation, tool-call event emission before turn completion, and staged prompt-file cleanup after aborted and successful turns.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7530: This PR extends the Claude CLI fixture suite included in that candidate-tree release.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7387: Both PRs add tests in the same suite for Claude CLI schema, output, tool-call, and protocol behavior.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to ecd06
The fixtures do not change adapter behavior or establish live CLI schema enforcement. No merge-blocking issue was identified.

Review comments at @tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts:
- Line 1055: Complete the tool-use stream fixture with an authoritative
message_stop, then extend the tool-use test assertions to verify a done event
with stopReason "tool_use" and no error. Since the fixture does not test
tool-result replay or final output, narrow the test title to the behavior it
actually covers.
- Around line 1109-1115: Add a sibling test beside the existing
unsupported-schema test that constructs its own schema request, sends invalid
model text in a valid CLI text_delta frame, and verifies the text is preserved
and the final event is done.
- Around line 1131-1132: Update the call-ID fixture tests to inspect
`FakeChild.written` and assert the intended identifier handling for both cases,
including the mismatched-ID case currently checking only the `tu_1` event;
remove the vacuous `tool_result` assertion. If these tests are not intended to
verify identifier handling, rename them to reflect what they actually assert.
- Around line 1162-1167: Remove the duplicate cancellation fixture around
`adapter.runTurn`; it directly kills the fake child without testing abort
propagation or cleanup. Keep the existing in-flight abort test as the
cancellation coverage, and do not add schema-specific coverage.
- Around line 1176-1179: Update the tool-call timing test around `run` so it
keeps the stream open after delivering the tool-call frame and verifies the
callback fires before sending the terminal result; do not rely only on
inspecting collected events after `runTurn` completes.

- Line 1152: Update the test around `writtenText` to verify the actual
orphan-result replay: assert that `child.written.join("")` contains
`nonexistent-id`, since the runner writes to `child.stdin` rather than the
replaced `child.write`. Rename the test to describe replaying the unmatched
result ID.

before the result, then assert the run ends with a `done` event and no error.

Complete authoritative tool stops, assert matching and mismatched replayed
IDs on stdin, and observe tool callbacks before terminal completion. Abort
through the request signal and assert process/input/prompt cleanup.

Maintainer carry pushed at ecd06de1f015391e4e568e20abd3543ca1f5d58b; merge e68281a93 brings in dev b16bc0978b, retaining and crediting the original author. Strengthened two-turn tool replay, real AbortController propagation and cleanup, mismatched-ID stdin assertions, and callback timing before completion. Replied on the four existing relevant review threads; they were already resolved before this carry.
RED against old fixture setup: bun test tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts --test-name-pattern '1. tool-use round trip|7. cancellation' --timeout 30000 — 0 pass / 2 fail. An intermediate 83/3 run caught missing authoritative stops and an incorrect fixture label; those were corrected without weakening assertions. bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, git diff --check passed. Bun 1.4.4; OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1; one Bun test process at a time.
NOT RUN: full suite and broad test:changed, per shared-host lane restriction; real Claude/provider turns, full/cross-platform runtime checks. Broader coverage remains for CI.
