Summary

Adds 19 offline regression tests for Issue #6469, focusing on the JSON Schema final-output contract in the existing Claude CLI route.

The goal is to establish what the current implementation actually supports before proposing behavioral changes. The tests cover schema propagation, final-output parsing, tool-call continuation, error handling, cancellation, and the existing capture-only MCP flow.

Scope: One test file, 579 insertions, 0 deletions. No production code or dependencies changed.

Related issue: Refs #6469

Findings

JSON Schema Propagation

The Claude CLI adapter does not consume options.textFormat or forward the requested schema through its CLI argument builder, staged prompt, or replayed input. Final JSON is handled as ordinary text, without JSON Schema enforcement.

Final Output and Error Handling

Completion is represented by text_delta events followed by a terminal done event. Malformed or truncated protocol output produces a protocol_error.

The tests verify that previously captured tool-call events and their arguments remain intact after protocol errors. They also cover valid protocol frames split across stdout chunks, ensuring that chunk boundaries alone are not treated as malformed output.

Tool-Call ID Handling

Missing tool-call IDs are rejected. Duplicate call IDs are not rejected by the current route, while unknown or mismatched result IDs are not validated by the current history-formatting path.

These tests document observed behavior rather than imposing a contract that the implementation does not currently establish.

Capture-Only MCP

The existing route keeps built-in tools and user/project MCP sources disabled while exposing caller-owned tools through the capture-only bridge.

The new test covers the staged-prompt instructions for these restrictions. CLI argument coverage already exists in the test suite, so that coverage is not duplicated.

Test Coverage

The 19 new tests cover:

  • JSON Schema propagation and structured final-output behavior.
  • Streamed versus buffered completion.
  • Malformed, truncated, empty, and valid protocol frames, including frames split across stdout chunks.
  • Preservation of captured tool calls and arguments after protocol errors.
  • Cancellation, child-process termination, and staged-prompt cleanup.
  • Missing, duplicate, unknown, and mismatched tool-call/result IDs.
  • JSON Schema requests combined with caller-owned tools and their results.
  • Capture-only MCP prompt restrictions, alongside existing CLI argument tests.

All tests use the existing fake-process harness. No live Claude subscription or app-server experiments were performed, and no dependencies were added.

Limitations

  • Not supported by the current route: JSON Schema forwarding and enforcement.
  • Not validated by the current route: Duplicate call IDs and unknown or mismatched result IDs.
  • Not established: Whether the Claude Code CLI version used by this proxy supports a structured-output flag. This was not tested live, so no claim is made about the CLI's capabilities.

The purpose of this PR is to document and protect existing behavior, not to treat every unsupported behavior or missing test as a confirmed bug. Decisions about implementation, transport, and dependencies remain separate from this test-only change.

Validation

  • bun test tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts passed: 44 passed, 0 failed, across 12 consecutive runs.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit passed.
  • git diff --check passed.
  • The full test suite did not complete due to environment-related failures in unrelated areas. No failures were observed in the Claude CLI tests.

Scope

  • Base commit: 79fa97be6
  • File changed: tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts
  • Diff: 579 insertions, 0 deletions
  • Production code: Unchanged
  • Transport and dependencies: Unchanged

This PR adds focused offline regression coverage for the current Claude CLI route. It does not implement JSON Schema support or change the route's behavior.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

Follow-up intake at fb0db167a9fbaa28eaf0658f5a2c867245521536 against dev 79fa97be6e6ae974ccd31d9aeedc2da96a0baa73. This is a test-only extension of the existing Claude CLI fixture, not a new native-tool execution path. The source explicitly records duplicate/orphan tool-ID behavior as observed legacy behavior rather than endorsing it, which is the right distinction. A fresh effective-check refresh shows current-head CI and the latest enforce-target check pass; the older failed repetition is superseded and is not a current blocker. Draft readiness and final review remain author-owned. Keep the named mocked chunk/protocol/cancel/schema boundaries and staged-file cleanup assertions. No actual Claude CLI or subscription execution was run here; this intake is not an approval of the documented duplicate-ID behavior.

Merged with owner authority per maintainer decision 2026-10-21 (jun): the project owner authorized owner-path (--admin) merges for the pending green PRs after the 2.90.0 release; no second-maintainer approval is available.

Exact-head verification on fb0db167a9fbaa28eaf0658f5a2c867245521536: all checks completed with no failures, the PR is mergeable, there are no change requests, and no unresolved current Major/Critical/P0/P1 review threads. A local squash of this head onto current dev cf9965c3f passed typecheck, structure:check, the file-size, import-cycle and test-layout ratchets, and this PR's own tests ( 147 pass 0 fail ). The merge is a squash pinned with --match-head-commit.

* test(launcher): place PATH-Bun fixtures under a trusted ancestry (#7402)

The real PATH-Bun fixtures were built beside the checkout, so a checkout under group-writable directories (macOS external volumes) made the product trust check reject every fixture, and an ancestor node_modules/bun could leak a runtime into the launcher fixture. A test-only helper now picks the first fixture base whose real ancestry passes the product rule (owner root or self, no group/other write) and holds no node_modules/bun. The product check is unchanged; a new regression file rebuilds a 0775 ancestor and proves the product still rejects it while fixture placement steps around it.

* test(launcher): try the next fixture base when one cannot be created (#7402)

A candidate that passes the trust walk but cannot be created (read-only parent) is now recorded and skipped instead of aborting selection. Adds the per-user runtime dir as a candidate and spells out the override remedy in the fail-closed error.

* test(layout): keep the fixture-trust entry on its sibling line

Combined with #7387 on dev, a new line in scripts/test-layout/layout.json
reached 2000 lines and tripped the file-size ratchet (NEW_OVERSIZED).
