test: isolate Windows fixture children from the account-wide runtime namespace - #7852
Two tests from #7810 fail on a Windows workstation that also runs its own opencodex proxy and has a populated user profile. Both failures came from fixture children reaching shared host state.
sibling-home-client-sync > "a lone custom-home start still syncs Grok and prunes its own Claude roster" (30 s timeout, child exit 143). On Windows, the client lifecycle lock (src/client/lifecycle-lock.ts) resolves its directory through the Known Folder API (resolveWindowsLocalAppData). That API deliberately ignores HOME and LOCALAPPDATA, so the fixture's start and ensure children used the account-wide runtime directory under the real %LOCALAPPDATA%. In the trace, startup finished at 3.5 s; the fixture server then spent 5.2–29.4 s in required icacls calls on that account-wide directory, roughly 8 s per call against 10–18 ms for fixture paths. That left ensure waiting for its picker endpoint until the deadline. Relocating only that lock removed the failure.
The new tests/helpers/fixture-windows-runtime-preload.ts gives fixture children a private known-folder namespace next to their guarded OPENCODEX_HOME. It refuses to run without an armed test-home guard. The real SID, locks and ACL enforcement are kept, and no product code changes. The case now passes in about 5 s.
catalog-auto-review-row > "convergence keeps the reviewer across two catalog/cache writes" (5 s). Both catalog writes finished by 2.9 s; the eval child then overran while importing the server graph with the per-run disposable transpiler cache that the test runner exports. An on/off/on control on the same host (default cache: timeout; cache disabled: pass in 2.8 s; default restored: timeout) makes the cache a causal variable on this host; the lower-level filesystem cause is not established. The child now uses the same private namespace preload, a short Windows fixture root (the SQLite file name embeds the SID plus a SHA-256), and disables the transpiler cache for Windows eval children only. On POSIX the fixture moves to the OS temp directory, because /mnt/c under WSL cannot represent 0600 and would undermine the private-file checks.
No assertion was removed, no budget was raised, and no product code changed.
Windows 11 host with a live opencodex proxy, Bun 1.4.4, OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1:
On dev, the lone-home case times out at 30 s; it has reproduced deterministically on this host in several independent runs this week. With this change it passes in 5.08 s.
On dev, the catalog convergence case times out at 5.2 s; with this change it passes in 2.56 s.
Linux (WSL, Bun 1.4.4, checkout on /mnt/c): sibling suite 34 / 0; catalog 18 pass / 1 timeout. That catalog timeout comes from the slow /mnt/c filesystem and is not addressed here; hosted Ubuntu CI is the authority.
tsc --noEmit, structure:check, privacy:scan and git diff --check pass.
NOT RUN: full local suite and test:changed (CI runs test changed), macOS, hosted lane=all (to be dispatched on the merge head), a Linux run on a native-filesystem checkout.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (Test-only.)
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (No product code; the preload refuses to run without the test-home guard.)

Walkthrough
The changes add a fixture namespace owner and a Windows runtime preload that validates fixture paths before setting the local-app-data resolver. New tests cover admission and refusal cases. Existing child-process tests use the preload, and the auxiliary-bind test probes its listener with a direct local HTTP request.

Fixture ownership and runtime validation tests/helpers/fixture-namespace-owner.ts, tests/helpers/fixture-windows-runtime-preload.ts
createFixtureNamespaceOwner creates a marker and nonce (lines 1–12). The preload checks guard state, ownership, protected paths, and marker validity before creating the local-app-data directory and mocking its resolver (lines 1–93).
The tests cover refusal and acceptance cases, including protected paths, symlink escapes, owner metadata, platform-specific path equivalence, and dot-prefixed path components (test lines 1–187). Both layout mappings include the new test.
Existing child-process test adoption tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/catalog-auto-review-row.test.ts
The sibling-home sync and catalog writer tests pass the fixture owner environment and preload to child processes. The catalog writer uses platform-specific temporary roots and disables the Bun transpiler cache on Windows (sibling-home lines 404–426; catalog writer lines 229–294).

The test uses directLocalHttpFetch instead of global fetch to check the held public listener’s response (lines 10, 59–60).
lidge-jun/opencodex#7810 — The changes update the named Windows-sensitive tests with fixture ownership and preload setup, and use a direct local probe to check the listener without proxy fallback.
lidge-jun/opencodex#7853 — The preload tests case-folded and component-aware path checks, but the shared guard defect described by the issue remains outside this change.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "test: isolate Windows fixture children from the account-wide runtime namespace" matches the main change. The PR adds a Windows runtime preload helper and a fixture namespace owner. Child processes get a private known-folder namespace instead of the account-wide runtime directory. The title is specific, follows the conventional "test:" prefix, and is 10 words, so it is concise enough to scan in history. The PR also adds a catalog timeout mitigation and moves POSIX fixtures to the OS temp directory, but those are secondary aspects that the title does not need to cover.

…namespace
Squashed onto origin/dev: fixture runtime preload, explicit namespace ownership, layout shard registration, and a direct-socket probe for the held public canary in cli-start-auxiliary-bind.
Fixed the test 1/4 failure on the previous head: file-size ratchet: repository reported scripts/test-layout/layout.json at 2000 lines (NEW_OVERSIZED). The fixture-windows-runtime-preload.test.ts entry now lives in the existing layout-agent-assertion.json shard, so the main map does not grow.
Local verification on Windows 11 with Bun 1.4.4, on a workstation running its own opencodex proxy:
bun test --isolate tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts: 33 pass / 1 skip (FIFO case, not applicable on Windows) / 0 fail; "a lone custom-home start still syncs Grok and prunes its own Claude roster" passes.
bun test --isolate tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts tests/codex-integration/catalog-auto-review-row.test.ts (pre-rebase head): 52 pass / 1 skip / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck: exit 0. Layout, layout tooling, file-size ratchet, fixture-windows-runtime-preload and cli-start-auxiliary-bind tests: 76 pass / 0 fail.
NOT RUN: full bun run test; hosted Windows CI (left to the coordinator's batched dev run).
Maintainer integration into dev: all 29 checks passed on exact head c75fd53 and the head merges into current origin/dev without conflict. Test-only change; no security-boundary code touched. The remaining CodeRabbit trivial (assert the specific refusal gate in refuses()) will follow in a separate change.
- 67bdeb0 (lidge-jun#8030): drop safety_identifier on canonical forwards.
- fb22d05 (lidge-jun#7852): Windows runtime preload and namespace-owner test
fixtures; sibling-home-client-sync adapted by hand (the fork lacks
a4e4cda); cli-start-auxiliary-bind not applicable.
- 07161c5 (lidge-jun#7824): shared isAbsoluteClientPath for client config
overrides; on Windows rooted paths without a drive or UNC share
(\Users\x, /x) are refused with ClientPathError.
ROADMAP: compact endpoint param stripping tracked as a watch row.
