fix(tests): component-aware protected-tree checks in the test home guard - #7879
Fix the test home guard's protected-tree containment check ([Bug]: test home guard treats '..name' children of protected trees as outside them #7853): isInside() decided containment with a string-prefix .. test, so a child of a protected tree whose name begins with two dots (e.g. ~/.opencodex/..backup, relative path ..backup) was judged OUTSIDE the tree and protectedRemovalReason() did not refuse its removal. The check now treats only a leading .. path component as leaving the root, matching the sibling isSameOrInsideIgnoringPlatformCase() used for the Claude trees. This changes the guard's verdict for ..-prefixed names on every platform — that is the point of the fix.
Fold platform case on the guard's DENY side only (new samePathOnPlatform() for equality, isInsideIgnoringPlatformCase() for removal-tree containment/ancestry), so a not-yet-existing case variant such as .OPENCODEX no longer slips past the OpenCodex home, Codex home, LaunchAgents, and removal-tree comparisons on macOS and Windows. This follows the guard's existing conservative OS-level policy (the Claude-tree checks already fold on darwin/win32 by platform, not by probing actual filesystem identity). On a case-sensitive volume the deny side can over-refuse, which the guard's design accepts — refusing too broadly is its safe direction. On Linux the fold is the identity function, so the case-folding change is a no-op there; the only Linux behavior change is the ..-prefixed-name verdict above.
The own-checkout content exemption (isOwnCheckoutContent()) deliberately keeps the exact, case-sensitive isInside(): a folded ALLOW would call a distinct same-letters-different-case sibling (e.g. .opencodex/CHECKOUT next to .opencodex/checkout) checkout content on a case-sensitive volume, turning a refusal into permission.
Update structure/ops/test-sandbox-cleanup.md to state the removal-tree comparison semantics, including the exact-match exemption.
Verification
bun test tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts — 29 pass, 0 fail, 0 skip (Bun 1.4.4, Linux x86_64). Includes the three new regression cases below.
New regression cases, each with red/green provenance:
..backup containment (in-process): fails on base (judged outside, removal not refused), passes on head. Runs on every platform.
Case-variant refusals (probe mocks process.platform as darwin before the guard module loads; covers removal equality + containment, all three write guards, isProtectedHomeUnderTest, plus controls): fails on base, passes on head. The platform mock exercises the comparison logic on any host — it is not a real macOS or Windows filesystem run.
Case-distinct checkout sibling (probe imports a copy of the guard from inside a synthetic protected home, so the running checkout genuinely sits inside the tree; mocked darwin): with the exemption also folded this ALLOWED removal of the distinct sibling — the case the regression guards — and passes on head with the exemption exact; the own-checkout positive control stays allowed throughout. This case needs two same-letters-different-case directories to coexist, so it runs only where the host volume is actually case-sensitive (probed with controlled sentinels in a temp dir); on a case-insensitive volume the fold makes the two names one directory, the exemption legitimately applies, and the test skips.
bun test tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard-unpreloaded.test.ts tests/claude-integration/claude-config-home-isolation.test.ts — 13 pass.
bun run typecheck — no type errors in 2,202 files.
bun run structure:check — passed.
Not run: full bun run test (the suite is too costly for this focused guard change; the focused suites above cover the changed module and its direct consumers). No real macOS or Windows run was performed; the case-fold paths are verified through the mocked-platform probes above.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved protected-path checks on macOS and Windows so paths differing only in letter case are handled consistently.
Corrected checks for names beginning with .., allowing valid protected-tree paths while continuing to reject paths that resolve outside the protected area.
Kept checkout-content exceptions case-sensitive, so similarly named sibling checkouts are not treated as the active checkout.
The path guard now uses platform-aware case folding for protected-path equality, containment, and ancestry checks. Containment treats only a leading .. component as leaving a protected tree. The running-checkout content exemption remains case-sensitive.
Protected-home and write-guard equality checks now fold case on macOS and Windows. Comparisons remain case-sensitive on other platforms.
Protected-tree containment and removal src/lib/test-home-guard.ts, tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts, structure/ops/test-sandbox-cleanup.md
Containment treats ..backup as a child and recognizes a path as outside only when its relative path is .. or starts with .. followed by a separator. Protected-tree removal checks use platform-aware case folding. Tests cover case variants and confirm that the checkout-content exemption remains case-sensitive. Documentation describes these rules.
lidge-jun/opencodex issue 7853 addresses the same component-aware .. containment and protected-tree case-handling behavior.

scoop install make cygwin python
ARM64 builds do not need Cygwin because WebKit is provided as a pre-built binary.
From here on out, use a PowerShell terminal with `.\scripts\vs-shell.ps1` sourced. Load the script by running it:
.\scripts\vs-shell.ps1
To verify, check for an MSVC-only command such as `mt.exe`:
Get-Command mt
Avoid installing `ninja` / `cmake` into your global path: you may end up building Bun without `.\scripts\vs-shell.ps1` sourced.

bun run build
A successful build writes `bun-debug.exe` to the `build/debug` folder.
.\build\debug\bun-debug.exe --revision
Add this folder to `$Env:PATH`: open the Start menu, type "Path", and use the environment variables menu to add `C:\.....\bun\build\debug` to the user environment variable `PATH`. Then restart your editor (if it still does not pick up the change, log out and log back in).
## Extra paths
* The build extracts WebKit to `$Env:BUN_INSTALL\build-cache\webkit-<version>-debug` (`webkit-<version>-arm64-debug` on ARM64); `BUN_INSTALL` defaults to `~\.bun`. </excerpt>

### What version of Bun is running?
1.3.14+0d9b296af
### What platform is your computer?
Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64
### What steps can reproduce the bug?
`path.win32.normalize` and `path.win32.join` skip two guards that Node applies, so a relative path that would come back looking like a drive or a DOS device is returned as-is instead of being prefixed with `.\`.
In Node's `lib/path.js`, `win32.normalize` returns ``.\\${tail}`` when the input is relative, no device was resolved, and the tail would otherwise start with a drive specifier or contain a colon at the end of a segment. The comment above that branch cites CVE-2024-36139. Separately, `win32.join` skips normalization entirely when any part is a reserved DOS name, which leaves `..` uncollapsed on purpose.

Keep the checkout exemption case-sensitive on Windows.
Bun 1.4.4 compares Windows paths case-insensitively in node:path.relative. On a case-sensitive Windows directory, content under CHECKOUT can therefore satisfy the exemption for the running checkout at checkout and bypass the removal refusal.
Use exact-case path-component containment for isOwnCheckoutContent, and add a Windows regression for a case-distinct checkout sibling.

Update isOwnCheckoutContent to use exact-case path-component containment rather
than the case-insensitive Windows behavior of isInside, preserving strict
descendant checks and component boundaries; add a Windows regression proving a
case-distinct checkout sibling does not receive the checkout-content exemption.

#7879 by @lee3Q reached the same component-aware protected-tree check independently; this PR lands the maintainer version and closes it as a duplicate.

* fix(test): judge protected-tree containment per path component (#7853)
isInside() treated any relative path starting with ".." as outside the
parent, so a direct child such as ~/.opencodex/..backup passed the removal
guard. Equality checks for the protected homes were also case-sensitive on
case-insensitive filesystems. Both now use the component-aware, case-folding
comparison the Claude tree checks already used.
Closes#7853
* fix(test): keep the checkout removal exemption case-exact (#7853)
Review of the component-aware containment change found that case folding
also reached isOwnCheckoutContent(). On macOS the guard folds case, so on a
case-sensitive APFS volume a running checkout at ~/.codex/worktrees/repo
exempted a distinct sibling ~/.codex/worktrees/REPO from the removal guard.
Protection decisions keep folding, since comparing broadly only refuses
more. The exemption, which lifts a refusal, now compares case exactly and
per path component. The new probe reports darwin before loading the guard
on a POSIX host, which models that volume; it fails on the previous head
(caseSibling exempted) and passes here. Windows skips it because
path.relative ignores case there regardless of the guard.
* test(service): report compiler stderr when the native recovery fixture fails to build
tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts compiles a std-only Rust
program and a Bun executable before exercising native Desktop recovery.
On #7884's full-selection `test changed` runs, rustc exited 1 in about
52ms with its stderr discarded, so the failure could not be told apart
from a toolchain that never started. The assertions now carry the last
2,000 bytes of each compiler's stderr. Exit code 0 is still required.
* test(service): resolve the rustup toolchain from the real home for the native recovery fixture
With compiler stderr now reported, #7884's full-selection `test changed`
run showed the cause of the 52-86 ms rustc failures:
error: rustup could not choose a version of rustc to run, because one
wasn't specified explicitly, and no default is configured.
rustc on the runner is a rustup proxy. With RUSTUP_HOME and CARGO_HOME
unset it resolves its toolchain under $HOME, and the test preload points
HOME at a sandbox. The fixture's rustc spawn now sets both to the real
home's .rustup and .cargo (OCX_REAL_HOME, captured by the harness before
HOME is rewritten, falling back to the passwd home) unless they are
already set. The compile and every assertion are unchanged.
* test(guard): flip every letter to build the case-colliding checkout sibling
basename(REPO_ROOT).toUpperCase() returns the same name for a checkout
that is already uppercase, so the probe reported distinct: false and
failed even with a correct guard. Flip the case of every letter instead,
and skip only when the name has no cased letter, where a case-colliding
sibling cannot exist. Reported by CodeRabbit on #7884.

Thank you, @lee3Q. The same component-aware protected-tree check landed on dev through #7884 (squash 463a0ee), which credits you with a Co-authored-by trailer because this PR reached the fix independently. Closing this one as a duplicate.

Summary
isInside()decided containment with a string-prefix..test, so a child of a protected tree whose name begins with two dots (e.g.~/.opencodex/..backup, relative path..backup) was judged OUTSIDE the tree andprotectedRemovalReason()did not refuse its removal. The check now treats only a leading..path component as leaving the root, matching the siblingisSameOrInsideIgnoringPlatformCase()used for the Claude trees. This changes the guard's verdict for..-prefixed names on every platform — that is the point of the fix.samePathOnPlatform()for equality,isInsideIgnoringPlatformCase()for removal-tree containment/ancestry), so a not-yet-existing case variant such as.OPENCODEXno longer slips past the OpenCodex home, Codex home, LaunchAgents, and removal-tree comparisons on macOS and Windows. On Linux the fold is the identity function, so the case-folding change is a no-op there; the only Linux behavior change is the..-prefixed-name verdict above.isOwnCheckoutContent()) deliberately keeps the exact, case-sensitiveisInside(): a folded ALLOW would call a distinct same-letters-different-case sibling (e.g..opencodex/CHECKOUTnext to.opencodex/checkout) checkout content on a case-sensitive volume, turning a refusal into permission.structure/ops/test-sandbox-cleanup.mdto state the removal-tree comparison semantics, including the exact-match exemption.Verification
