fix(adapters): strip safety_identifier at the canonical ChatGPT forward destination - #8030
droid (and any other client that fuzzy-matches OpenAI model names against its own registry) attaches safety_identifier to every BYOK custom model whose name matches a built-in GPT-5.x/6 entry — gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-5.6-sol, gpt-6-astra, etc. — with no custom-model guard, unlike its prompt_cache_retention/prompt_cache_key siblings. The official OpenAI API-key surface accepts the parameter, but the canonical ChatGPT Codex backend runs a strict parameter allowlist and rejects it outright:
Through ocx this surfaces as BYOK Error: 400 for every registry-matched model pointed at a canonical-forward provider, not just one model.
The fix lands at the existing boundary for exactly this rejection class: safety_identifier is added to the canonical-only drop list in stripUnsupportedForwardParams, beside metadata and max_output_tokens. Only the canonical ChatGPT Codex forward destination strips it; the OpenAI API-key surface, self-hosted gateways, and noncanonical forward gateways keep the field untouched (it is a real platform parameter there — verified against tests/responses/responses-canonical-only-top-level-fields.test.ts, which pins third-party retention and is unchanged). The strip is source-agnostic: it removes the parameter regardless of which client supplied it (CodeRabbit doc finding fixed in 008c5c730; CodeRabbit's re-review of that head reported zero actionable comments and the thread is resolved).
Files
src/adapters/openai-responses/canonical-forward.ts — the one-line drop-list addition plus contract comment.
tests/responses/responses-forward-prompt-envelope.test.ts — canonical cases now pin the strip; the four "different destination" cases pin retention everywhere else.
structure/runtime.md — the strip-boundary paragraph updated in the same change (owned-area doc follows the code).
Branch currency: merged onto dev tip 63de499e1 (0 behind; the v2.95.0 release + 2.96.0 version bump landed on dev between pushes). Head: df00f2d77.
Verification
Live reproduction on a canonical-forward provider: POST /v1/responses with safety_identifier returned 400 {"detail":"Unsupported parameter: safety_identifier"} before the change; the identical request returned HTTP 200 with response.completed after the change.
Focused regression: bun test ./tests/responses/responses-forward-prompt-envelope.test.ts ./tests/responses/responses-canonical-only-top-level-fields.test.ts — 18 pass / 0 fail (re-run green on the merged base).
Wider cone: bun test ./tests/responses/openai-responses-passthrough.test.ts ./tests/routing/router-combo-failover-classification.test.ts — 250 pass / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck — pass (re-run on merged base). bun run structure:check — pass. bun run privacy:scan — pass. File-size ratchet + test-layout guards — pass.
Full suite not run locally (shared host); broader coverage left to CI.

…rd destination
droid's BYOK path attaches safety_identifier to any custom model whose name
fuzzy-matches its built-in OpenAI registry (gpt-6.1-sol etc.), with no
isCustomModel guard, unlike prompt_cache_retention/prompt_cache_key. The
canonical ChatGPT Codex backend runs a strict parameter allowlist and rejects
it with {"detail":"Unsupported parameter: safety_identifier"}, surfacing as
a 400 BYOK error through every registry-matched model pointed at ocx.
Add it to the canonical-only drop list in stripUnsupportedForwardParams,
beside metadata and max_output_tokens. The official OpenAI API-key surface and
noncanonical gateways keep the field (it is a real platform parameter).
Reproduced live: POST /v1/responses with safety_identifier -> 400 before the
fix; regression tests pin strip-on-canonical and keep-on-everywhere-else.

Walkthrough
Canonical forwarding removes safety_identifier alongside existing unsupported parameters. Tests verify the canonical and alternate-destination behavior. Runtime documentation describes the behavior and its exceptions.
Changes: Canonical forwarding behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Canonical forwarding filter and coverage src/adapters/openai-responses/canonical-forward.ts, tests/responses/responses-forward-prompt-envelope.test.ts, structure/runtime.md
Canonical forwarding removes safety_identifier; tests also check that user is omitted while prompt_cache_key, input, tools, and the original request remain unchanged. Alternate-destination tests verify that user and safety_identifier remain present. Runtime documentation describes the canonical behavior and the Claude translation, public API, and noncanonical gateway exceptions.
The forwarding behavior and documented exceptions are consistent, with no merge-blocking risk identified.

Reviewed the complete three-file diff at b0e571964887e11288c8f8eee37afa0f3fae7ea7. The functional delta adds only top-level safety_identifier to the existing canonical-forward omission set; copy-on-write, field-absent identity and noncanonical/API-key preservation remain. The remaining source churn is formatting. Canonical destination selection still belongs to the existing caller; no new destination, credential or request replay is introduced.
Independent official Bun1.4.4 with matching frozen dependencies, disposable homes and hard resource bounds: bun test --isolate tests/responses/responses-forward-prompt-envelope.test.ts -> 13 pass, 0 fail, 42 assertions. bun check --no-script --noEmit -> pass. These are serialized-request tests; I made no live ChatGPT/OpenAI inference call and did not independently reproduce the reported backend error.
After complete diff/execution-surface inspection I allowed existing exact-head CI runs41140211474/41140211483. This is COMMENT pending their required results, not technical/merge approval. Public API and lookalike-host controls preserve the public safety field; original input, prompt-cache identity and nested schema fields remain covered. No new scan, dispatch, merge or live configuration change was made.
CodeRabbit finding on b0e5719: the doc claimed the parameter reaches the
canonical surface only from third-party clients (droid's registry-matched
BYOK). Any Responses client may send the public OpenAI-platform parameter
explicitly; the strip removes it regardless of which client supplied it.
The other-destination retention sentences are unchanged.

Rechecked the complete three-file delta at 008c5c7301562842a7d8c8c2f64b49fa63005be0. The runtime implementation and envelope-test blobs are byte-identical to reviewed/tested b0e571964887e11288c8f8eee37afa0f3fae7ea7. Only the owning documentation now correctly says canonical forwarding strips the field regardless of the supplying client. That resolves the documentation finding; its thread is resolved.
I allowed the existing current-head Catalog41148892924 and Cross-platform41148892938 runs after reviewing the diff and execution surfaces. The package.json difference against current trusted dev is only its historical version line, not scripts/dependencies; no feature-branch version bump or new workflow was requested. The previous13-pass envelope run and typecheck remain scoped evidence on identical code/tests, so I did not repeat them. Required CI/readiness remain current-head requirements: this is COMMENT while the PR is Draft and the newly authorized CI is incomplete. Please re-attest the four readiness boxes against this head after validation; no live provider call or merge was made.
Status: the CodeRabbit doc finding is fixed in 008c5c730 (source-agnostic wording), replied to, and the thread is resolved — its re-review of that head reported zero actionable comments. The branch is now merged onto dev tip 63de499e1 (0 behind) at head df00f2d77; envelope tests 18/18, typecheck, structure:check re-run green on the merged base. Readiness re-attested (4/4), marked ready for review.

Approved for exact head df00f2d7773a0fcbf92b50b8417de37daa7b4bdd targeting dev 63de499e1.
The three-file comparison retains the previously reviewed canonical-destination-only top-level safety_identifier strip. Public API/key auth, noncanonical/lookalike destinations, nested tool schema properties, prompt-cache identity and caller-owned replay input retain their controls. The owning runtime sentence now correctly says any client can supply the stripped field. The dev merge adds no new feature behavior to this comparison; the source and test blobs match the previously independently tested version (13 pass / 42 assertions and typecheck), so I did not repeat passing unchanged-code tests.
The author re-attested this head and the PR is Ready. Fresh threads are resolved and there is no maintainer change request. Existing fork runs were allowed after diff/execution-surface review; exact-head Cross-platform 41180303598 (gates, test changed, aggregate ci) and Catalog 41180303701 are now successful. This is the selected hosted Ubuntu scope, not full platform acceptance. No provider call, scan, merge or release was performed.
