Summary

Refs #7456. Carries the focused buffered fix from #7711 by @chenyb999-zhcn onto dev.

A native Responses combo child could return completed text despite mandatory tool_choice, so the combo reported success without a call. Validate restored buffered JSON before hosted-image display projection: missing client calls become required_tool_contract_unsatisfied failures eligible for the existing fallback path. When a hosted effect already occurred, return HTTP 400 with retry suppression instead of dispatching again. Preserve provider-owned custom-call identity, physical usage, call IDs, the full tool catalog and result continuation; retain folded-SSE usage for spend settlement without publishing completion effects.

Streaming required-tool enforcement remains open. Direct routes, runTurn, global capability policy and #7463's translated Chat sibling are separate scopes; #7463 is not carried. This PR must not close #7456. Both test-layout maps, the owning structure contracts and public error documentation are updated. No size cap is raised; core-combo.ts stays unchanged at 1441 lines.

Verification

Base: d056f84926e5b3b2f2c77183a981c09f50df39c2. Head: c5b84dd965c4c397f29430e458b2db783575c949. Windows, Bun 1.3.14 for focused commands; the repository wrapper selects Bun 1.4.4.

  • Regression before fix: bun test --isolate tests/server/server-combo-required-tool-contract.test.ts — 7 passed, 6 failed. The first expected backup call_m2 but received the first child's text-only completed payload. Added safety regressions were also driven red before repair.
  • bun test --isolate tests/server/server-combo-required-tool-contract.test.ts tests/responses/responses-hosted-image-delivery.test.ts tests/server/spend-instrumentation-log.test.ts — 110 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun test --isolate tests/server/server-combo-zero-output-failover.test.ts tests/server/server-combo-tool-loop-continuation.test.ts tests/routing/combo-stream-preflight.test.ts tests/server/error-fidelity.test.ts — 68 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun test --isolate tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts — 63 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun install --frozen-lockfile at root and docs-site; bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and whitespace checks — passed. Manifests and lockfiles unchanged.
  • In docs-site, bun run build — passed: 593 pages, 84875 internal links.
  • Independent source review — PASS, zero remaining blockers; not independent runtime or CI evidence.
  • Incomplete: bun run test:changed selected 1717 files but exceeded its 900-second budget (script exit 124), followed by Windows EPERM cleanup. A final-tree retry stayed queued behind another runner and was cancelled before tests began. No passing broad-run claim is made. Keep draft verification status pending coordinator/CI validation.
  • NOT RUN: full bun run test per coordinator instruction; completed final-head broad run; hosted CI; live provider/Codex acceptance; native Linux/macOS validation; formal maintainer security review. Simulated image platform paths are not native OS qualification.

No auth, credential, OAuth, workflow, release or dependency-installation behavior changes are included.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.
    • No listed MAINTAINERS.md security boundary changed; privacy scan and independent source correctness review passed. Formal maintainer security approval is not claimed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Buffered native Responses combo results are now checked against required or named function/custom tool choices. Missing required calls return an error and may trigger the existing fallback policy.
    • Hosted tool calls that do not satisfy the requested contract return a non-retryable error without fallback; usage is still recorded.
    • Incomplete responses, streaming, direct native routes, and unsupported tool contracts retain their existing behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Updated reference and transport documentation to explain enforcement, fallback, and error handling.

Carry the focused buffered fix from #7711 onto dev. Validate restored native
JSON before hosted-image display can erase call evidence, preserve reported
usage, and stop replay after provider-executed effects. Streaming and the
translated Chat sibling in #7463 remain separate scopes.

Walkthrough

The change checks buffered native openai-responses combo responses against explicit required or named tool choices. Unsatisfied contracts return typed failures, with usage recorded where applicable. Streaming, direct native routes, and translated Chat adapter terminals remain outside the guard.

Changes: Buffered required-tool contract

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contract extraction and verdict
src/server/responses/combo-required-tool-contract.ts, src/lib/errors.ts, src/bridge/errors.ts
The contract parser recognizes supported required and named choices. The judge checks completed buffered output and returns required_tool_contract_unsatisfied when no eligible call matches. Error formatting preserves the code unless cyber-policy precedence applies, and applies replay-refusal headers to status 400.
Combo delivery and failure handling
src/server/responses/passthrough-delivery.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/proxy-formats.md, structure/transports/responses-combo-boundaries.md, structure/transports/responses-failover.md, structure/transports/responses.md
Eligible buffered combo responses are checked after tool-name restoration and JSON namespace normalization. The code records usage before returning a guarded failure. Hosted-effect mismatches are non-replayable; other missing-call failures use status 502. Documentation describes fallback behavior and excluded paths.
Matching, fallback, and boundary coverage
tests/server/server-combo-required-tool-contract.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, tests/helpers/responses-core-source.ts
Tests cover matching function, custom, and declared hosted-tool calls; hosted mismatches; large tool catalogs and continuation; and incomplete, streaming, opaque, or unsupported cases where enforcement abstains. The test-layout mappings assign the suite to the server shard.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(combo): reject buffered required-tool false successes" matches the main change. The diff adds a required-tool contract check for buffered, non-streaming native openai-responses combo children. The check returns required_tool_contract_unsatisfied (502) when a completed response lacks a call that tool_choice requires. It returns a non-replayable 400 when a mismatched hosted call occurred. The title is specific and uses the conventional fix(scope) form. It names the buffered scope, so it does not overclaim streaming enforcement, which the PR leaves out of scope.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes stay connected to the buffered required-tool objective in #7456. The contract module, combo delivery integration, stable error code and retry headers, usage retention, hosted-image ordering, ownership handling, regression tests, test-layout updates, structure documentation, and public error documentation support that objective. The available evidence shows no unrelated authentication, credential, OAuth, workflow, release, or dependency-installation change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7456 remains open and directly linked. The PR implements the buffered native combo subset. src/server/responses/combo-required-tool-contract.ts:47-94 parses completed buffered JSON, rejects missing required calls, preserves usage, and marks hosted effects non-replayable. :96-103 limits the guard to successful buffered openai-responses combo delivery. tests/server/server-combo-required-tool-contract.test.ts:15-22 explicitly limits the tests to this safe buffered subset. The issue also requires required-tool preservation and verification at the upstream adapter boundary, direct-route enforcement, conservative streaming enforcement, and isolated direct and streaming coverage. The reviewed changes do not establish those requirements. The PR statement that streaming and direct routes remain separate scopes does not remove requirements from the directly linked issue.

Resolution

Implement the remaining #7456 coding scope while the issue remains directly linked. Preserve and verify required tool_choice at the relevant upstream adapter boundary. Add direct-route enforcement. Add conservative streaming handling that does not replay after client-visible output, side effects, or ambiguous commitment. Add isolated direct and streaming tests, including no-output and committed-output cases, one required tool, 151 declared tools, continuation, call IDs, model identity, authorization, and cancellation. If this PR intentionally targets only the buffered combo subset, remove the direct link to #7456 and track the remaining requirements in separate linked issues.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 64.29% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 14 functions across 6 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

P2 Badge Normalize named selectors before comparing restored tool calls

For a buffered native combo request declaring namespace mcp with function ping and selecting {type: "function", name: "mcp__ping"}, a valid response is incorrectly rejected. rewriteRoutedNamespaceToolsForUpstream accepts this flattened selector, but restoreRoutedNamespaceCallsInJson restores the returned call to {namespace: "mcp", name: "ping"} before this check runs. The requirement still contains the raw name mcp__ping, so this comparison produces a 502 and can exhaust every combo target despite each returning the requested call. Resolve the selector and restored call into the same namespace-aware identity before comparing them, and add regression coverage for flattened named selectors.

Avoid the extra full-response JSON.stringify on non-combo buffered requests.

Line 1046 evaluates JSON.stringify(client.terminal.response) before requiredToolFailure runs. requiredToolFailure returns early at Line 456 when the request is not a combo attempt, so the string is built and discarded. Line 1059 then serializes the same object again.

For every canonical buffered request, this serializes the terminal response twice. The terminal response can be as large as the bounded transcript, so the second pass costs CPU and allocates a second large string in the hot path. Non-combo requests get no benefit from it.

Serialize once and reuse the string:

⚡ Proposed fix
-        const requiredFailure = await requiredToolFailure(JSON.stringify(client.terminal.response));
+        const terminalJson = JSON.stringify(client.terminal.response);
+        const requiredFailure = await requiredToolFailure(terminalJson);
-        let clientJson = JSON.stringify(client.terminal.response);
+        let clientJson = terminalJson;

Preserve aggregate usage when finalizing required-tool failures.

For an API-key-owned buffered folded-SSE attempt with an existing wire-usage baseline, the new branch records baseline-plus-terminal usage in childLog.usage, but the synthetic failure body contains only terminal usage. core-combo.ts then finalizes the attempt with failure.usage, replacing the aggregate. The spend tracker still receives childLog.usage, but combo request-log aggregation uses the overwritten attempt row and omits the baseline.

Use the retained aggregate for this specific failure, with the failure usage as a fallback:

# Writing tests

Write tests with Bun's Jest-compatible API, including async tests, timeouts, and test modifiers

Define tests with a Jest-like API imported from the built-in `bun:test` module. Long term, Bun aims for complete Jest compatibility.

## Basic Usage#

To define a test:

math.test.ts

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("2 + 2", () => {
      expect(2 + 2).toBe(4);
    });`

### Grouping Tests#

Group tests into suites with `describe`.

math.test.ts

    `import { expect, test, describe } from "bun:test";

    describe("arithmetic", () => {
      test("2 + 2", () => {
        expect(2 + 2).toBe(4);
      });

      test("2 * 2", () => {
        expect(2 * 2).toBe(4);
      });
    });`

### Async Tests#

Tests can be async.

math.test.ts

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("2 * 2", async () => {
      const result = await Promise.resolve(2 * 2);
      expect(result).toEqual(4);
    });`

Alternatively, use the `done` callback to signal completion. If your test function takes a `done` parameter, you must call it or the test hangs.

math.test.ts

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("2 * 2", done => {
      Promise.resolve(2 * 2).then(result => {
        expect(result).toEqual(4);
        done();
      });
    });`

## Timeouts#

Optionally specify a per-test timeout in milliseconds by passing a number as the third argument to `test`.

math.test.ts

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("wat", async () => {
      const data = await slowOperation();
      expect(data).toBe(42);
    }, 500); // test must run in <500ms`

In `bun:test`, a timeout throws an uncatchable exception to force the test to stop running and fail. Bun also kills any child processes spawned in the test, so they don't linger as zombie processes.

The default timeout for each test is 5000ms (5 seconds) unless you override it with this timeout option or `jest.setTimeout()`.

# bun:test/valid-expect

Require `expect` to get a value, end in a called matcher, and be awaited when it is async

error by default has suggestions

`expect(value)` doesn't check anything by itself. The check happens when a matcher such as `.toBe()` is called, so an `expect` with no matcher, or with a matcher that isn't called, passes no matter what the value is.

`.resolves` and `.rejects` make the matcher return a promise. If the test doesn't await or return it, the test can end first, and a failed assertion doesn't fail the test.

This rule is on by default in files that import from `"bun:test"`.

## Configure#

On by default as an error. To turn it off:

bunfig.toml

    `[lint.rules]
    "bun:test/valid-expect" = "off" # or "warn"`

Every option, set to its default:

bunfig.toml

    `[lint.rules]
    "bun:test/valid-expect" = ["error", {
      alwaysAwait = false,
      asyncMatchers = ["toResolve", "toReject"],
      minArgs = 1,
      maxArgs = 1,
    }]`

## Examples#

example.ts 4 problems

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("adds the tax", () => {
      expect(total(100)); // no matcher
      expect(total(100)).toBe; // the matcher is not called
      expect().toBe(108); // no value
      expect(total(100)).never.toBe(0); // `never` is not a modifier
    });`

example.ts 1 problem

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("loads the user", () => {
      expect(loadUser(1)).resolves.toEqual({ id: 1 });
    });`

example.ts No problems

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("adds the tax", () => {
      expect(total(100)).toBe(108);
      expect(total(100)).not.toBe(0);
    });

    test("loads the user", async () => {
      await expect(loadUser(1)).resolves.toEqual({ id: 1 });
    });

    test("rejects an unknown id", () => {
      return expect(loadUser(-1)).rejects.toThrow("not found");
    });`

A second argument is the message to print on failure, and it doesn't count toward `maxArgs`. `expect().pass()` and `expect().fail()` don't need a value:

example.ts No problems

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("adds the tax", () => {
      expect(total(100), "after tax").toBe(108);
    });

    test("never calls back", () => {
      subscribe(() => expect().fail("called back"));
    });`

A missing matcher or a missing `await` is only reported when the `expect` is its own statement. If you keep it in a variable or pass it to a function, it can get its matcher or its `await` somewhere else:

example.ts No problems

    `import { expect, test } from "bun:test";

    test("adds the tax", () => {
      const result = expect(total(100));
      result.toBe(108);
    });

    test("loads both users", async () => {
      const first = expect(loadUser(1)).resolves.toEqual({ id: 1 });
      const second = expect(loadUser(2)).resolves.toEqual({ id: 2 });
      await Promise.all([first, second]);
    });`

## Options#

Option | Default | What it does
--- | --- | ---
`alwaysAwait` | `false` | Report every async assertion that isn't awaited where it's written, even one that's returned or kept in a variable.
`asyncMatchers` | `["toResolve", "toReject"]` | Matchers that return a promise, so they must be awaited or returned. Your list replaces the default.

## Error Handling#

### Unhandled Errors#

`bun test` tracks unhandled promise rejections and errors that occur between tests. If any occur, `bun test` exits with a non-zero code even when no test failed. In both examples below the error happens while the file is being loaded, so the file's tests are not run at all.

This helps catch errors in asynchronous code that might otherwise go unnoticed:

test.ts

    `import { test, expect } from "bun:test";

    test("test 1", () => {
      expect(true).toBe(true);
    });

    // This error happens outside any test
    queueMicrotask(() => {
      throw new Error("Unhandled error");
    });

    test("test 2", () => {
      expect(true).toBe(true);
    });

    // bun test reports this as "Unhandled error between tests", does not run
    // this file's tests (0 pass, 1 error), and exits with code 1`

### Promise Rejections#

The test runner also catches unhandled promise rejections:

    `import { test, expect } from "bun:test";

## Root cause

`expect( p ).rejects.toThrow( … )` awaits the promise synchronously: the matcher
host call goes `toThrow` → `Expect.processPromise` (`src/test_runner/expect.zig`) →
`EventLoop.waitForPromise` (`src/jsc/event_loop.zig:557`), which spins the event
loop from inside the matcher until the promise settles. A plain `await` instead
suspends the test function and returns to the normal event loop — that is the entire
difference between the failing and passing tests above.

1.3.14 replaced the per-message task delivery model for `MessagePort` and `Worker`
messages with coalesced drain loops (#29937, merged Apr 30, first released in
1.3.14), and the new wakeup protocol is incompatible with that synchronous wait.
The `worker.onmessage` path this repro exercises lives in
`src/jsc/bindings/webcore/Worker.cpp` (line numbers per the `bun-v1.3.14` tag):

  * `Worker::enqueueToParent()` posts a drain task only when the inbox's
`drainScheduled` flag is clear; otherwise it just appends to the queue with no

Await the rejects assertion.

Bun 1.4.4 does not attach an unawaited .rejects matcher to this test. A wrong resolution or rejection can therefore let this test finish without recording an assertion failure, although Bun may later report the rejected matcher promise as an unhandled rejection at the suite level.

This corrects a missing regression assertion. It does not indicate a current production failure.

Await the `.rejects` assertion for `judgeBufferedRequiredTool` in this test so
the test records failures when the promise resolves or rejects with the wrong
value.
