feat(codex): verify Windows CLI archive and shim layouts - #7619
Add a read-only verifier for Windows x64 Codex CLI archives and expected installed layouts. It checks main/backing package linkage, the codex.exe PE header, Windows path ambiguity, supported npm shims, and the relative path, size and digest of every expected package file.
Windows tar checks are opt-in. The native header comes from the same verified stream with at most 4 KiB of extra buffering. Results explicitly carry applicable: false and mutationAuthority: false; there is no apply consumer.
After #7596 landed, this branch normally merged current dev at 4cdcb50d9d318302777840cb5906feae66d37edd. Published head: 1bbd1c94f7d8516713687634ced9c764ed12cc68; tested tree: 185e940f7eddd46b7d67238572247b1993c88321. Its parents are the already-published parent integration 14b585ce0d8f2cac49fb603b132c4a892d593fe2 and that dev commit. The dev-relative scope remains ten files, +386/-4.
All four conflicts from the current dev integration were resolved. The test-layout registrations are combined, the structure index was regenerated by its owner command, and current dev's default Windows target_unresolved refusal/no-npm-execution planner and negative tests are retained. Archive verification does not grant metadata execution or installation authority.
Integration disposition — 2026-10-28
The maintainer's new #7648 consolidation commit explicitly supersedes #7614, #7618 and #7619. Keep the existing owner's #7626 → #7648 integration and duplicate-landing decision. This later dev-merge head is not an ancestor of that rebased/squashed consolidation; these branch-validation records do not establish acceptance of #7648's enabled-installation boundary. Do not independently land both versions.
Verification
Official Bun 1.4.4+38afee6c8, Linux:
On the final dev-integrated tree, planner/native-plan cases plus layout/tooling/structure/size guards: 154 passed / 18 skipped / 0 failed, 1,112 assertions. The native Windows skips are not passing evidence.
Current Bun-native typecheck: 2,190 files, no errors. Structure/index, privacy and dev-relative whitespace checks passed.
The earlier parent integration passed 164 unique tests: Windows-layout synthetic cases 40, registry integrity 8, archive/POSIX artifact consumers 27 and structural/layout guards 89. The 75 archive/layout/integrity cases are reused evidence: their production files and fixtures were verified byte-identical on this final merge. They were not rerun or presented as new final-tree executions.
The first archive run under the restricted execution environment produced an empty npm-child result. Minimal Node/npm probes isolated the execution-boundary issue; the same source and assertions passed in the authorized normal execution environment. No product fix, assertion relaxation or deadline increase is claimed for that run.
Independent static merge review found no blocking integration issue. The exact published remote tree and both parents match the tested local merge; publication used non-force ref advancement.
Supports x64, ASCII archive paths, sibling backing packages and the specified node-shebang shim grammar. PE-header sanity is not signature, loadability or execution proof. Byte equality does not establish prefix ownership, selection or write authority. Native Windows/macOS execution, real vendor installation and end-to-end installed-toolchain acceptance were not established by this Linux integration. Required maintainer installation/security acceptance and final landing/closure under the #7648 supersession remain outstanding.
No PR was merged into dev and no force push, deployment, live configuration, installed runtime or certificate store was changed.
Checklist
Current dev normally integrated; ten-file child scope preserved.
Conflicts resolved and actual combined tree checked.
Read-only authority and newer parent execution refusal preserved.
Published tree/parents verified; new and reused evidence distinguished.
…lans
Port the Windows-plan hunks of 44353b9, 86ad5a0 and c291ff8 onto the
7586 POSIX stack head 4c22308. A proof-captured absolute standard npm
codex.cmd shim, its global-prefix package, prefix-local Node/npm and the
prefix-local optional backing are bound by held-handle identity
re-verification; the plan then reports applicable: false with refusal
windows_apply_disabled. PATH-only selection and separate-prefix Node stay
refused; Windows apply remains disabled. The independent
cli-installation-targets refused-probe fix (#7577) is intentionally not
included.
The change adds opt-in Windows archive validation and a Windows x64 Codex CLI layout verifier. The verifier checks package metadata and native executable headers, then returns expected file records and digests for exact readback matching.
Changes: Windows Codex CLI update support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Windows archive validation and member capture src/codex/cli-update-windows-paths.ts, src/codex/cli-update-artifacts.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-windows-layout.test.ts
The archive verifier can validate Windows paths and retain up to 4 KiB of the native member while computing its digest. The artifact entry point no longer rejects Windows solely because it is win32. Tests cover path checks and Windows-specific archive behavior.
Windows layout verification and matching src/codex/cli-update-windows-layout.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-windows-layout.test.ts, tests/fixtures/codex-windows-npm-shims.json, structure/codex-cli-update.md, structure/INDEX.md, structure/manifest.json, scripts/test-layout/layout-codex-collision.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The verifier checks package metadata, linkage, and the native PE header. It returns a frozen, non-applicable layout with expected file records and digests. Matching requires the complete expected set. Tests, shim fixtures, documentation, and test-layout mappings cover the added behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1bbd1
This change adds a read-only Windows archive verifier with no apply path, so the runtime risk is small. Some architecture and translated documentation may still contradict the implemented behavior, which is worth fixing before merge.

Regenerate the structure index from the combined manifest while retaining both the parent recovery ownership and the existing Windows archive layout and fixture contracts.
Rebased onto the rebased #7626 head: this single commit carries the #7648 layer
delta (40 commits on codex/windows-apply-transaction-20261023). It replaces the
#7596 refusal of Windows npm metadata with the verified, held toolchain authority.
Supersedes #7614, #7618 and #7619, whose commits are contained in this layer.

Remove the stale "no candidate I/O" claim on line 338. It contradicts line 323 and the English source.
Line 323 now says Windows x64 check inspects a supported codex.cmd layout through held handles. Line 338 in the same file still says: "Le check Windows existant ne réalise toujours aucune E/S de fichiers candidats ou de configuration."
The English page was updated in this PR. docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/agents.md line 1297 now says the separate Windows check/plan predicate can establish read-only planning evidence. The production predicate in src/codex/cli-windows-plan-provenance.ts reads the shim, the manifests and the Node PE header. The French page therefore contradicts both the English source and the code.

Correct the claim that the Windows opt-in content digest "stays null".
Line 317 says the opt-in content digest "stays null here" for the supported Windows x64 layout. The code and the authority document say something different:
src/codex/cli-windows-plan-provenance.ts line 183 computes content when deps.observeInstallContent === true.
Line 188 of that file publishes content as installContentDigest.
createCodexCliUpdatePlan always sets observeInstallContent: true (src/codex/cli-update-plan.ts line 606). The plan path therefore always produces a non-null digest.
tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-windows-plan.test.ts line 71 asserts a 64-hex installContentDigest for an opted-in inspection.
structure/codex-cli-update.md lines 86-89 says the plan-bound installContentDigest is preserved. Only a bare check leaves it null.
The null digest applies only to a bare check that does not opt in. The current sentence contradicts the contract authority. It also breaks the parallel with the POSIX sentence on line 315.

Closing as superseded: every commit on this branch is contained in #7648, which landed on dev as c655484 after #7596 and #7626. Thank you @luvs01 — the work is credited there through the Co-authored-by trailers on the squash commit, and this PR's history remains linked from #7648.

Summary
Add a read-only verifier for Windows x64 Codex CLI archives and expected installed layouts. It checks main/backing package linkage, the
codex.exePE header, Windows path ambiguity, supported npm shims, and the relative path, size and digest of every expected package file.Windows tar checks are opt-in. The native header comes from the same verified stream with at most 4 KiB of extra buffering. Results explicitly carry

Automatic Cross-platform CI 40623554492 and Catalog contracts 40623554485 are queued at the post-publication check. Previous successful CI belongs to older heads. No manual dispatch or retry was requested.
Limits
