Supersedes #4649 (closed by the owner on 2026-10-22 to keep the review queue manageable, with an explicit invitation to reopen or open a smaller PR; the reopen API rejects state changes for that PR, so this is the same branch refreshed onto the latest dev). Review history, the security review at c7618dd068/1084eed684, and all review-thread resolutions carry over; 2026-10-24 adds only the maintainer-triage fixes described under Verification.

Summary

  • Reworks feat(dashboard): revocable server-side remembered device sessions #4649 per the owner's October 15 request: Remember this device exchanges the admin token for a server-issued, revocable device session. The admin token is never persisted in browser storage.
  • The server sets an opaque host-only HttpOnly, SameSite=Strict cookie (__Host- and Secure on HTTPS) and stores only hashes plus a fixed 30-day server-side expiry in its private, bounded dashboard-sessions.json store. Remember also returns a separate device proof that the dashboard keeps in this origin's storage and sends only on its session re-bootstrap. Cookies are shared across ports of one hostname; the proof (origin-scoped) is what binds the remembered device to this dashboard, so the cookie alone never resumes a session. Neither value is the admin token and neither works alone.
  • Forget this device is in the desktop sidebar and mobile action bar. Logout durably revokes the device record and all its resumed sessions, expires the cookie and clears the proof. Store replacement uses a no-follow writer that fsyncs content before rename; directory-entry durability on crash is best effort.
  • Persistence is opt-in and restricted to direct same-origin HTTPS dashboards (including the hub's dedicated management listener behind its local TLS terminator) or loopback. Remote plaintext HTTP, cross-origin dashboards and relay transport keep memory-only sign-in. Obsolete remembered-bearer-token keys are deleted without being read, sent or migrated.
  • Remembered sessions derive from the admin token, so every casual-path consent guard treats them like the admin token: GitHub star, Anthropic reset-grant consumption, prompt-layer writes, Meta Muse sign-in, desktop compatibility changes and pending-account validation on refresh still need a fresh local or paired dashboard session. Pairing, data-key reveal and link routes stay denied.
  • Brought onto current dev with merge commits (no rebase/force-push). Updated all 11 GUI locales, the English dashboard guide and all seven translations, route inventory and architecture docs.

Refs #4644. This works around repeat PWA sign-in; it does not claim to restore Safari password AutoFill.

Verification

Final head c7618dd06826beb40bc4705b3ec01099ee3d8541 (contains dev f443f49ed0).

  • Hosted CI at that head (fork runs approved by a maintainer after checking the PR adds no .github/install-script changes): CI ci.yml run 39067644319 success — gates, structure gate, test 1/4–4/4, docker smoke, api usage, storage policy, keyring ubuntu, npm-global ubuntu, docs site build all success (macOS/Windows jobs skipped per PR policy); React Doctor run 39067644299 success; Catalog async contracts run 39067644305 success. The CI checkout was Merge c7618dd068… into f443f49ed0….
  • Focused, pinned Bun 1.4.3: bun test --isolate tests/server/persistent-dashboard-session.test.ts tests/server/persistent-dashboard-admission.test.ts tests/config/atomic-write-nofollow-streamed.test.ts tests/server/sidebar-routes.test.ts tests/server/server-management-auth.test.ts tests/server/management-route-registry.test.ts tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts → 176 pass, 0 fail; tests/server/startup-prompt.test.ts tests/cli/cli-headless-parity.test.ts → 120 pass, 0 fail.
  • GUI: full cd gui && bun run test → 3448 pass, 0 fail; bun x tsc -b --noEmit, bun run lint:gui, bun run lint:i18n, bun run build:gui → exit 0.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun run skill:surface:check, git diff --check → exit 0. Docs site build → 577 pages.
  • Full local bun run test (macOS, pinned Bun 1.4.3): 4 failing tests on the first run. Two were real source-oracle updates (star-endpoint oracle, headless-parity map), fixed in 7770892d9c and green in CI at this head. The other two are environment-only on this host: tests/ci-workflows/bun-runtime.test.ts refuses to clean a fixture because the checkout lives under the real Codex home, and claude-desktop-remote-hub cold restart fails identically on a clean origin/dev export. The local run shared the machine with other concurrent worktrees; full Linux coverage is the hosted CI above.
  • Regression tests added: admission through real management dispatch (Origin/Sec-Fetch-Site/forwarded headers, plain-HTTP and relay refusal, hub listener positive path, duplicate cookies, proof required at every bootstrap entry point including the live machine listener, proof absent from cookies/HTML/URLs/disk/logs, CSRF on logout, forget durability and failure rollback, admin-token rotation, malformed/symlink/hardlink/oversize store, 128-record limit, all consent guards with loopback controls); atomic writer fsync-before-rename and failure behavior; GUI proof storage/transport/removal and storage-failure handling. A mutation removing the User-Agent binding now fails the suite.
  • Not demonstrated: real iPhone Safari standalone relaunch and a real two-port browser run; Windows store/ACL behavior beyond CI's skipped jobs.

Server-side remembered-device sign-in: opt-in checkbox and session/HTTPS explanation

Security review

This PR changes dashboard authentication and credential storage, so it was reviewed explicitly before this head:

  • Credential at rest: browser holds an HttpOnly cookie and an origin-scoped proof, never the admin token; the server stores SHA-256 digests of device token, proof, admin-token fingerprint and User-Agent with a fixed 30-day expiry. Rotating the admin token invalidates every remembered device.
  • Origin binding: a remembered session is minted only when cookie, proof, server origin, User-Agent and admin-token fingerprint all match, checked inside the resume path before any session exists. Forwarded headers cannot create the hub listener trust mark.
  • Authority: remembered sessions get dashboard access but admin-token parity on consent actions, and no pairing, data-key reveal or link authority.
  • Revocation: logout/Forget revoke in memory immediately and publish the store with content fsync before rename; a failed publication returns 503 and keeps both disk and memory state for retry.
  • Independent reviews: an architect review and plan audits before implementation, and a final-diff security review (PASS after two fixes: shared-session recovery during target discovery, and a vacuous User-Agent test). No automated security scanner was run.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Maintainer validation (head 2730c0c70)

2730c0c70 is this PR rebased onto dev 4b2fc8dea as a single commit (previous heads a41b1a244, then 512bcdbcb on e1976daf1. The second update only re-unioned the layout.json explicitShards list with the new layout-exec-boundary.json shard.). Two integration changes against dev:

  • dev (fix(desktop): provide paired authority for compatibility controls #7775) moved the three desktop compatibility POST guards to the shared isAuthorizedDesktopCompatibilityMutation helper, which requires a paired session on trusted loopback. That helper now also requires a human dashboard session (hasHumanDashboardSession), so a remembered device stays refused there, and the GET mutationAuthorized flag uses the same rule.
  • tests/server/persistent-dashboard-admission.test.ts: an automatic loopback session is now refused on the desktop routes (as dev intends), and the positive desktop cases use a real paired session. The layout.json explicitShards conflict was resolved as a union.

Earlier history: security review rounds 2-4 PASS; round 5 found the CLI-update apply route gap, fixed in 2e67cbb56 with a runtime enumeration of every mutating session-only route; rounds 6-7 PASS.

  • Independent security delta review round 8 at 512bcdbcb: PASS, 0 blocking. It confirmed that remembered sessions (enrolled and resumed) are refused on all 20 protected session-only mutations in the current registry, logout stays allowed, and the GET flag and POST guards share one rule.
  • Local checks on 512bcdbcb, repeated on 2730c0c70 (typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan exit 0; admission 17/0 and route registry 28/0 when run alone), (Windows, Bun 1.4.4): typecheck exit 0; persistent-dashboard admission/consent/session, desktop compatibility routes, route registry, management auth, sidebar, CLI-update admission, layout, ratchet and structure tests: 279 pass / 4 platform skips / 0 fail; privacy:scan, structure:check and git diff --check exit 0. The full local suite was not run (shared-host resource exception); remaining coverage is left to PR CI.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Explanation

The title "feat(dashboard): revocable server-side remembered device sessions" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary and PR objectives show the core work is an opt-in 'Remember this device' feature. It issues a revocable HttpOnly device cookie with an origin-scoped localStorage proof, stores hashed records in dashboard-sessions.json with a fixed 30-day expiry, and revokes them on Forget or logout. The title is concise, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. No file list or vague wording is present.

Context for reviewers: this supersedes #4649 (closed by @lidge-jun on 2026-10-22 as idle, with an invitation to reopen or open a smaller PR; the reopen API rejects state changes on that PR, so this is the same branch refreshed onto current dev — merge commit 5a40231cc, no new code).

Carried-over state: owner security review NEAR-PASS at c7618dd068 with maintainer-sponsored applied, Ingwannu re-review confirmed the last fixes and withdrew the change requests, all review threads resolved, hosted CI green at the prior head. Validation at this head: typecheck pass, focused session/admission/GUI suites 41 pass / 3 platform skips / 0 fail, build:gui pass (Bun 1.4.3).

When convenient: this PR will need the maintainer-sponsored label re-applied for the auth surface, and fork-run approval for Cross-platform CI / React Doctor / Catalog async contracts. The outstanding acceptance items are unchanged: real iPhone/PWA check and the owner disposition on the two Remember/Forget semantic changes.

Qualify the logout contract for remembered devices.

Line 431 says POST /api/session/logout invalidates only the current browser session. The new contract at Line 10 says a successful Forget action uses logout to revoke the device record and all sessions derived from it. Readers cannot use both statements as the current logout contract. State that the “current session only” rule applies to ordinary sessions, and document the remembered-device exception here. As per coding guidelines, “A doc in this folder states the contract that holds right now.”

Triage note (2026-10-24, against dev at 2494848).

Needs fixes before this can land: move registrations into a shard; clarify same-origin hints; obtain explicit maintainer security sponsorship, current-head CI and Windows validation. MAINTAINERS.md:74 requires security review.

Still needed on dev: yes — src/server/management/session-routes.ts:4 only handles logout; src/server/gui-session.ts:66 defines existing short-lived sessions.

Exact-head CI at triage time: 5a40231 — FAIL: hygiene, enforce-target, both for unsponsored_surface. Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts and React Doctor are action_required. lane=all on exact head: no.

Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.

Addressing the 2026-10-24 triage note, refreshed onto current dev e8ff1b20614 at head ee0fa55ed (merge commit, zero commits behind):

  1. Registrations into a shard. The three new test registrations left inline scripts/test-layout/layout.json (which put the map at 2002 lines, over the Account-pool collision fix requires preservation-fixture and layout budget alignment #7413 2000-line ratchet) and now live in scripts/test-layout/layout-persistent-dashboard.json, wired through explicitShards per the fix(codex): stop pool accounts from spending the native main account (#7398) #7414 precedent; layout.json is back to 1999 lines. If the triage meant something else by this item, the HTTP surface itself already lives in the session-routes shard (src/server/management/session-routes.ts, declared in the route registry), so please point me at the specific registration and I will move it.
  2. Same-origin hints. auth.rememberDeviceHint now says the HTTPS dashboard must be same-origin with the API (loopback exception preserved) in all 11 locales - fr/ja/ko as CodeRabbit flagged, and the remaining locales kept consistent so none contradicts the English string.
  3. CodeRabbit findings. readRecords now sizes its read buffer from the stat it just validated and rejects mid-read store growth instead of silently truncating at a fixed limit; structure/dashboard-and-usage.md now states that ordinary logout invalidates only the current browser session while a remembered-device logout also forgets the device record and its derived sessions.
  4. Windows validation (pinned Bun 1.4.3). bun run typecheck pass; focused suites (session/admission/atomic-write/layout + tooling/route-registry/startup-prompt/headless-parity) 200 tests: 195 pass, 5 platform skips, 0 fail; GUI focused suites 38 pass, 0 fail; bun run build:gui pass. test:changed on this host trips a pre-existing flake: the kiro-auth-context-continuation fixture-teardown ACL hook times out identically on a pristine origin/dev checkout on the same machine, so it is documented as the full-suite exception.

Still needing maintainer action when convenient: maintainer-sponsored for the auth surface, and fork-run approval for Cross-platform CI / React Doctor / Catalog async contracts at this head.

Release decision (v2.93.0 dev-merge, maintainer triage lane): DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE. The PR stays open; this is not a rejection.

This changes the dashboard authentication and session boundary (src/server/management-auth.ts, src/server/management-api.ts, src/server/auth-cors.ts, src/server/management/oauth-account-routes.ts). Under MAINTAINERS.md those paths need maintainer sponsorship (the maintainer-sponsored label that unsponsored_surface asks for) and an explicit security review before merge. A remembered-device session store is a new long-lived credential, and reviewing it properly does not fit inside the 2.93.0 cut. The branch is also still a draft (readiness 0/4), 56 commits behind dev, with two open CodeRabbit threads (same-origin hint wording, session-file reads).

Nothing in 2.93.0 depends on it. Thank you for working through the earlier triage items. After the release, please refresh onto dev, resolve the two threads, and complete the readiness checklist; it will then be queued for sponsorship and security review.

Thanks - the three items are done, and understood on the post-release deferral.

  • Refreshed onto dev. Head is now e92db8e4a (merge of dev c2f3d8b42, zero commits behind). No conflicts; the session code, route registration and docs carried cleanly.
  • Both CodeRabbit threads resolved. Each got a reply naming the fix, then was resolved: the same-origin hint qualifier (all 11 locales; fr/ja/ko as flagged) and the stat-sized session-store read with mid-read growth rejection. Both fixes were already in ee0fa55ed and are carried at this head.
  • Readiness checklist completed at e92db8e4a with the evidence: bun run typecheck pass; focused suites 203 tests - 198 pass, 5 platform skips, 0 fail; GUI focused 38 pass, 0 fail; bun run build:gui pass. The only documented exception remains the pre-existing kiro-auth-context-continuation fixture-ACL hook timeout, which reproduces on a pristine origin/dev checkout on this machine.

One note so the numbers do not look inconsistent: the gate comment here still shows 0/4 because it has not re-run since 2026-10-23 - fork workflow runs need maintainer approval, so the hygiene and gate jobs have not executed for the newer heads. The description reflects the current state. Once the gate does run at this head it should see the branch on dev and no unresolved threads.

Still on the maintainer side when you queue it: maintainer-sponsored for the auth surface, the security review, and fork-run approval for Cross-platform CI / React Doctor / Catalog async contracts. Happy to refresh again after 2.93.0 ships, since dev will keep moving.

Maintainer sponsorship (release lane L-A, acting under admin authority from the repository owner): applying maintainer-sponsored for the auth and session surface flagged by unsponsored_surface: src/server/auth-cors.ts, src/server/management-api.ts, src/server/management-auth.ts and src/server/management/oauth-account-routes.ts.

This lands after v2.93.0. The PR stays POST-RELEASE and will not merge until v2.93.0 is published on main. Before merge it still needs an independent security review round with zero blocking findings (round 1 is running now at the head below), green exact-head CI, and the owner's call on the two Remember/Forget semantic changes.

Branch maintenance: I merged current dev into the branch as e112f43efb995c913a15f86ddcc9c245ab810933, a normal merge with no force-push. The only conflict was the explicitShards list in scripts/test-layout/layout.json. I kept dev's new layout-combos.json and this branch's layout-persistent-dashboard.json, and layout.json stays at 1,999 lines. Local checks at that head with Bun 1.4.4 on Windows: tsc --noEmit pass, structure:check pass, and the layout, file-size ratchet, persistent-dashboard admission/session, atomic-write, startup-prompt and headless-parity tests gave 185 pass / 5 platform skips / 0 fail.

Release lane L-A status: security review is now at zero blocking findings. This still lands after v2.93.0, once the release is published on main.

  • Round 1 (gpt-6.1-sol, at e112f43e) found 1 blocking item: Forget/logout must remain possible after a browser update. Maintainers fixed it in 8eeb0f04 with Co-authored-by for the author. Only the exact POST /api/session/logout admission tolerates User-Agent drift. Origin, CSRF, cookie, server-origin and admin-credential checks are unchanged, and ordinary access and resume stay bound to the User-Agent. New regressions in tests/server/persistent-dashboard-admission.test.ts go through real admission and failed before the fix.
  • Round 2 (gpt-6.1-sol, at 4e36b493, which is the fix plus a normal merge of dev 81ce59591c): PASS, 0 blocking, no owner decisions outstanding. The reviewer confirmed that a logout after User-Agent drift deletes the device record durably and that the session cannot resume after a reload. The path and method variants and the cached admission found no way out beyond revocation. Bun 1.4.4 focused run: 455 pass, 5 skip, 0 fail; typecheck, privacy and structure all pass.
  • I approved the fork CI runs for 4e36b493: Cross-platform CI, React Doctor and Catalog async contracts.

Remaining before merge, after v2.93.0 is published: refresh onto dev, green exact-head CI, one lane=all run on the final head (the session store uses Windows file ACLs), a GUI screenshot in the description per repository policy, and marking the PR ready.

Rebased onto dev as a single commit. Includes the maintainer follow-ups
(origin-scoped device proof, UA-drift logout admission, session-only route
consent, and desktop compatibility consent through the shared paired-session
authorization).

Maintainer integration decision (lane N3, acting under the repository owner's admin authority; maintainer-sponsored).

  • Exact head 2730c0c70d4ad2cdabbe9c3d1bdc93d7934b865b is this PR rebased onto dev 4b2fc8dea as one commit. Integration with dev: the shared desktop compatibility authorization (fix(desktop): provide paired authority for compatibility controls #7775) now also requires a human (non-remembered) dashboard session, and the PR's consent test uses a real paired session for the desktop routes. PR CI is green on this head: Cross-platform CI 40625561825, Catalog async contracts 40625561819, React Doctor and the latest PR hygiene run. The earlier hygiene failure on this head came from wording in the description and was fixed there.
  • Independent security reviews: rounds 2-4 PASS; round 5's session-only apply-route gap was fixed in 2e67cbb56; rounds 6-7 PASS; delta round 8 at 512bcdbcb (same diff as this head except the layout.json shard union) PASS, 0 blocking. Remembered sessions are refused on every protected session-only mutation in the current registry, and logout stays allowed.
  • Local (Windows, Bun 1.4.4) on this head: typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan exit 0; focused session/consent/route tests pass. A scratch merge with current dev 08d80f24a is clean; typecheck exit 0; consent, admission, route registry, layout and ratchet tests 100 pass / 4 skip / 0 fail.
