fix(desktop): provide paired authority for compatibility controls - #7775
Desktop compatibility mutations require a paired local operator session. This provides a usable local pairing flow and prevents settings captured under an old session from replaying under a replacement session.
Expose read-only, request-specific mutationAuthorized metadata and reuse the translated pairing form with the exact-origin ocx gui pair command.
Validate the candidate machine session before enabling certificate, runtime or auto-start controls. Pairing performs no Desktop mutation; the shared session remains separate.
Commit the handoff before the form unmounts, discard old consent on machine-session replacement, abort pending operations and fence late completions.
Open the configured literal loopback address from ocx gui; preserve the exact-origin check and IPv6/auto-start/hub behavior.
Preserve a definitive refusal when response-body cleanup rejects or stalls. Roll back the candidate session immediately; genuine network failures retain explicit validation retry. Keep bounded HTML challenge classification and external cancellation behavior.
Verification
Current head: ecf6bfa97b7cf980219846bd335565c84c13b787. The latest commit changes only eight CLI reference URL rows; product code is unchanged from 6c73875b. A normal dev merge (a43acb03) retains the existing pairing/origin changes and updates the runtime/test baseline to Bun 1.4.4.
Current refusal-cleanup follow-up
Unmodified product code failed six new refusal/rollback cases. Two further cases reproduced stalled reader cleanup masking HTML challenge/refusal classification.
Final focused GUI coverage: 171 passing cases across bounded runs (139 unchanged cases plus the corrected 32-case panel run). This is not a single all-green 171-case invocation: the initial combined run exited 1 because a network-control test expected the wrong existing UI text; the corrected panel rerun passed without changing product behavior.
Tests verify machine-token restoration, restored form input, no extra Desktop mutation POST, refused vs network-failure handling, HTML challenge classification and cancellation.
GUI app/node typechecks, Vite build, five-file lint, structure, file-size ratchet, privacy and whitespace checks passed. Independent source review found no blocker in this five-file follow-up.
Execution used an external 55-second watchdog with native exit/EOF and owned-process cleanup checks. No install, live service, account, certificate or trust-store change was made.
Cleanup is best effort. These tests do not establish that an arbitrary transport physically closes every stream/socket.
CLI reference verification
The English CLI lifecycle reference and seven translations now use the configured literal loopback origin for ocx gui. Intentional ocx status --json examples remain unchanged. The exact candidate documentation passed an actual Bun 1.4.4 build: 593 pages and 84,956 internal links, with the URL checked in all eight generated locale pages. Source/staging identities matched, and temporary staging and owned processes were removed.
Earlier implementation evidence
At 74c5031a and its documented pairing predecessor: the GUI session suite passed 160 cases; management-route tests passed 15; the literal-origin follow-up passed 242 with one Windows-native skip, plus 101 import-connected cases. Earlier type/build/docs checks passed. These are historical scopes, not fresh full-suite results for this head.
An earlier broad GUI run had one sandbox loopback-listener failure, with that file subsequently passing 13/13 with loopback access. An earlier root changed-test run was incomplete (1,692 pass lines, three failures); two quota failures also reproduced on the baseline, while the sidecar-settings timeout cause remained unproven. No full repository pass is claimed.
Hosted Cross-platform, Catalog async-contract and React Doctor checks completed successfully on the exact 6c73875b commit before submission. New upstream Cross-platform CI and Catalog async contracts also completed successfully on that product-code head. The ecf6bfa docs update passed Cross-platform CI and Catalog async contracts. Platform jobs skipped by workflow selection do not establish native coverage.
UI evidence
The following Chromium 153.0.8010.0 captures verify the earlier pairing layout with actual components/styles and synthetic certificate/session responses. The cleanup follow-up changes no layout; these are prior-revision rendering evidence, not a new native test.
Images are pinned on the separate pr-assets branch at ba977968. Their blob hashes match the previously verified captures; no image or capture fixture is part of this source branch.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Setup and pairing documentation is included.
Explicit maintainer security review and native acceptance.
The change is ready for maintainer review. Live Windows certificate/trust-store operations and native compatibility-runtime acceptance remain unverified; explicit maintainer security review is required before merge.
Desktop compatibility actions now require an explicitly paired local dashboard session. The dashboard checks authorization before enabling controls, and session changes clear consent until authorization is confirmed again.
The dashboard opens using the proxy’s literal loopback address, supporting IPv4 and IPv6.
Bug Fixes
Pairing now uses the selected machine session, and interrupted or outdated operations cannot apply stale results.
Pairing and link-validation errors no longer wait for response-body cleanup to finish.

Walkthrough
The CLI preserves literal loopback addresses for dashboard pairing. Desktop compatibility mutations now require an operator-paired GUI session on trusted loopback ingress. The GUI validates machine-session authorization and handles session changes during pending operations.
The CLI preserves the probed hostname, including literal loopback addresses. Tests cover IPv4, IPv6, auto-start, and origin matching. Guides and runtime documentation describe the corresponding dashboard URLs.
Pairing transport and machine-session handoff gui/src/api.ts, gui/src/bounded-fetch.ts, gui/src/connect-pairing-transport.ts, gui/src/connect-pairing.tsx, gui/tests/local-link-pairing.test.ts, structure/gui-and-management-api.md
Pairing hands off a session for the selected target’s plane. Response-body cancellation does not delay refusal handling. The form can notify callers after commit, and tests cover machine-session handoff and refusal cases.
Certificate, runtime, and settings POST routes use a shared check for a GUI-session principal, trusted loopback ingress, and paired session. Certificate status includes mutationAuthorized. Tests cover paired and unpaired sessions.
GUI authorization and operation lifecycle gui/src/desktop-compatibility-api.ts, gui/src/pages/codex-desktop-compatibility.tsx, gui/src/pages/desktop-compatibility-startup-setting.tsx, gui/tests/desktop-compatibility-panel.test.tsx, structure/clients/codex-desktop.md
The GUI validates the machine session before enabling compatibility controls. Machine-session changes clear consent and invalidate pending operations. Startup-setting operations ignore stale results and require a fresh read after interruption.

CI triage for head 20055b0a1c0207e88efc4d364dffdd8956f6c1d5 (PR head ecf6bfa9 plus a normal merge of dev42549ba1).
test changed (run 40507364387, job 122200116176) finished 29952 pass / 1 fail. The single failure is unrelated to this PR:
tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update-boundary.test.ts > "Codex CLI selection inspection boundary > plan identity binds the bytes a real npm-global install placed" timed out at 5087 ms against Bun's default 5000 ms.
That case performs a real npm pack and npm install -g through spawnSync (30 s / 60 s child timeouts) with no per-test timeout, so its outcome depends on runner speed. It is skipped on Windows.
Its imports (src/cli/codex-cli-update.ts, src/cli/launcher-context.ts, src/codex/cli-install-provenance.ts, src/codex/cli-update-plan.ts) are not touched by this PR (git diff --stat 42549ba1b0 20055b0a1c over those paths is empty).
Every other check on this head passed. I am re-running only the failed job once; the timing sensitivity of that case is reported separately for the test-stability owner.
