Summary

OpenAI announced GPT-6 Sol and Luna on 2026-09-22 (https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-sol-and-luna/). The authenticated ChatGPT Codex roster (/backend-api/codex/models) already serves both as full native rows, but codex-rs has not bundled them yet. opencodex only lists natives from its own allowlist, so users could not pick either model.

This PR registers both as self-described flagship natives, listed unconditionally like gpt-6-astra. Their rows were captured from the live roster on 2026-09-23 at client_version=0.155.0. They are pinned verbatim in a new sibling file, src/codex/data/roster-pinned-models.json, which src/codex/catalog/pinned-models.ts merges after the codex-rs snapshot. A later snapshot re-pin that bundles either model therefore wins without editing this file.

Older Codex clients can use them. The backend gates these models on the caller's version header only: it rejects version: 0.154.0 with "not supported" and accepts 0.155.1 or an absent header. User-Agent makes no difference. opencodex does not forward version (FORWARD_HEADERS in passthrough.ts) and strips minimal_client_version from catalog rows, the same reason gpt-6-astra already works on older clients.

Luna keeps its shipped low..max ladder: nativeLadderIncludesUltra stops ensureGpt56ReasoningLevels from adding ultra. Sol keeps low..ultra.

gpt-6-astra-minor appeared only in an Azure AI Playground config snapshot (pl4nty/data 2b6a2351) and was withdrawn the same day. No roster serves it. It is registered as an account-gated capability alias of gpt-6-astra: hidden and request-refused until an authenticated roster lists it.

No API-key registry rows or prices are added here.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck: exit 0 on this head.
  • Tests were not run locally, at the maintainer's request (push with --no-verify; hosted CI is the gate). New coverage is in tests/codex-integration/gpt6-native-rows.test.ts, registered in both layout files. Exact native-list expectations were updated in native-model-toggle.test.ts and subagent-model-fallback.test.ts. codex-catalog.test.ts is untouched.
  • Live probes on 2026-09-23 (main account plus five pool accounts):
    • The roster serves Sol and Luna only at client_version >= 0.155.0.
    • Sol is absent on 2 of 6 accounts.
    • /responses behaves as described above for version and User-Agent.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The catalog adds GPT-6 Sol, Luna, and Astra Minor. Sol and Luna use pinned native roster rows with distinct reasoning ladders. Astra Minor uses gated Astra capabilities. Model pinning, entitlements, tests, routing, and documentation are updated.

Changes

GPT-6 native catalog

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned roster data
src/codex/catalog/pinned-models.ts, src/codex/catalog/metadata.ts, src/codex/model-entitlements.ts
Pinned rows now combine the upstream snapshot with missing roster rows. Metadata and gated-model version floors use the combined list.
Native model registration
src/codex/catalog/native-models.ts, src/codex/catalog/metadata.ts
Sol and Luna are self-described, ungated flagships. Astra Minor is account-gated, uses Astra capability metadata, and has its own alias presentation. Context overrides use 272,000 default and 872,000 maximum tokens.
Catalog projection and reasoning behavior
src/codex/catalog/effort.ts, src/codex/catalog/metadata.ts
Capability checks resolve source slugs. nativeLadderIncludesUltra preserves model-specific ladders. Alias rows derive base_instructions before cloning.
Validation and documentation
tests/codex-integration/gpt6-native-rows.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/native-model-toggle.test.ts, tests/routing/subagent-model-fallback.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/providers.md, structure/catalog.md, structure/providers/openai-tiers.md
Tests cover row metadata, visibility, account gating, pinned-row merging, and drain sentinels. Documentation describes the new models and their availability rules.

Update the catalog documentation and overlap test before merging. The current behavior is locally consistent, but the published contracts are ambiguous or future-dated and a routine snapshot refresh can fail validation.

라인 - CI test 3/4가 실패한다. tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-sync-hardening.test.ts의 「canonical custom Astra repairs stale efforts and keeps a narrow ladder across syncs」가 서브프로세스 exit 1로 깨진다.

라인 - src/codex/model-entitlements.ts의 ENTITLEMENT_PREFERRED_NATIVE_OPENAI_MODELS에 Sol/Luna가 없다.

Sol/Luna를 Astra처럼 무조건 노출할지, 지금처럼 ENTITLEMENT_PREFERRED에서 빼 둘지.

Sol/Luna를 플래그십으로 두려면 ENTITLEMENT_PREFERRED_NATIVE_OPENAI_MODELS(그리고 문서의 always-visible 목록)에 같이 넣고, 빼 둘 거면 사용자에게 “풀이 소유 계정을 안 고른다”를 더 분명히 적는다.

`medium` default. Sol ships low-through-ultra; Luna stops at `max`, and no path may add `ultra` to

`ensureGpt56ReasoningLevels` restores `max` everywhere but adds `ultra` only where the pinned row

Scope the global Ultra statement to routed models.

The new Native passthrough contract says Luna stops at max and does not advertise ultra. The Ultra section still says Ultra is always advertised, with no native-ladder exception. Update it to distinguish self-described native ladders from routed synthetic Ultra behavior.

Suggested documentation fix
-Ultra is always advertised in the catalog regardless of the `multi_agent_v2` toggle. The v2 toggle
-controls only the multi-agent collab surface, not ultra visibility. The `nativeEffortClamp` function
-wire-clamps ultra/max to each model's real top rung (e.g. gpt-5.5 ultra → xhigh on the wire).
+Ultra is always advertised for routed models regardless of the `multi_agent_v2` toggle. Self-described
+native ladders are the exception: each model advertises only the levels in its pinned row, so Luna
+stops at `max` and does not advertise `ultra`. The v2 toggle controls only the multi-agent collab
+surface, not routed Ultra visibility. The `nativeEffortClamp` function wire-clamps ultra/max to each
+model's real top rung (e.g. gpt-5.5 ultra → xhigh on the wire).

first four (`ENTITLEMENT_PREFERRED_NATIVE_OPENAI_MODELS`); Sol and Luna do not feed it yet.

Name the four-model routing subset explicitly.

The preceding bullet lists six unconditional flagships, but the next paragraph calls only the first four “the always-visible flagships.” Line 490 repeats that label for denial recording. This makes the six-model roster and the four-model entitlement-preferred subset ambiguous.

Use ENTITLEMENT_PREFERRED_NATIVE_OPENAI_MODELS or “the four entitlement-preferred flagships” for this subset.

Suggested terminology fix
- The always-visible flagships (`gpt-5.6-sol`, `gpt-5.6-terra`, `gpt-5.6-luna`, `gpt-6-astra`)
+ The entitlement-preferred flagships (`gpt-5.6-sol`, `gpt-5.6-terra`, `gpt-5.6-luna`, `gpt-6-astra`)
...
- scoped to the always-visible flagships, so a 400 anywhere else cannot steer routing.
+ scoped to the entitlement-preferred flagships, so a 400 anywhere else cannot steer routing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the disjoint-source assertion.

Line 190 requires the snapshot and roster files to remain disjoint. The production merge explicitly permits an old roster row to remain after the snapshot gains the same slug. A valid codex-rs refresh that adds Sol or Luna will therefore fail this test.

Test precedence with a synthetic overlapping slug instead. Assert that the merged row is the snapshot row and that the result contains the slug once.

OpenAI announced GPT-6 Sol and Luna on 2026-09-22, and the authenticated ChatGPT Codex
roster already serves both as full native rows. codex-rs has not bundled them yet, so
opencodex never listed them and users could not pick them.

The two roster rows (captured 2026-09-23 at client_version 0.155.0) are pinned verbatim in
a sibling file, src/codex/data/roster-pinned-models.json, merged after the codex-rs snapshot
so a later snapshot re-pin wins automatically. Sol and Luna are self-described flagship
natives listed unconditionally, like gpt-6-astra; opencodex does not forward the caller's
`version` header, so older Codex clients can use them too. Luna keeps its low..max ladder
instead of inheriting ultra.

gpt-6-astra-minor appeared only in an Azure playground config and is not served by any
roster; it is registered as an account-gated alias of gpt-6-astra, hidden and refused until
an authenticated roster lists it.
