Stamp a filed commit with when the hook ran - #1958
The server placed a reported commit after every transcript line in the batch carrying it, so a fast turn's commit landed in the next turn, which then had no fork base. The git hook now stamps each commit with its own clock (committed_at), and the server places it before the first line written after that time.
A read split into chunks sends every chunk all of its commits, so each chunk but the last carries more_follows, and the server leaves a commit stamped after that chunk's lines to a later one.
Where to look
The shutdown spool: when the cap or a write stops it after the first chunk, the commits are spooled on their own, since kcap import carries none. Both fields are omitted when unset, so an older server ignores them.
Verification
GitHookTests: 7/7.
TranscriptBatchBufferTests: 5/5.
ShutdownTranscriptSpoolTests: 15/15. The new chunk-flag and cut-spool checks failed with their code taken out.
dotnet publish -c Release: no IL2xxx/IL3xxx warnings.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved transcript replay when captured activity is split into multiple batches, preserving commit information when the transcript tail exceeds the spool limit.
Commits now include their recorded time, helping place them correctly in the transcript.
Batch metadata indicates when additional transcript content follows, including across split batches.
Spool capacity checks account for space needed by pending content, helping prevent commits from being lost when the limit is reached.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Observed commits now include a timestamp, and transcript batches indicate whether another chunk follows. Shutdown spooling forwards this metadata and accounts for pending commits and reserved spool capacity.

Summary
Batch metadata and commit timestamps src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Models.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/ObservedCommit.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/GitHook.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/GitHookTests.cs
TranscriptBatch adds the optional more_follows field. ObservedCommit adds nullable committed_at, which GitHook sets to the current UTC time. Tests check that the timestamp falls within the hook call interval.
Chunk splitting and shutdown spooling src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/TranscriptBatchBuffer.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/WatchCommand.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/TranscriptSpool.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/*, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/TranscriptSpoolTests.cs
Split batches set more_follows when another chunk follows. Shutdown spooling forwards that value and attempts to append pending commits separately when a later chunk fails. TranscriptSpool.Append includes reserved content in its capacity check without adding it to the stored batch. Tests cover continuation metadata, a capped shutdown tail, and reserved capacity.
When the expected auth-file path is absent from the watched set, the test now throws an exception with details about the watched and rebuilt sets, accounts, and supported vendors.
kurrent-io/kcap-cli#1870: Adds the account-specific watch-set test that this change updates with additional failure diagnostics.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0fec4
A partial acknowledgement can omit commits from the shutdown transcript handoff, risking incorrect commit placement; the acknowledgement state handling should be fixed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0fec4
The changes do not visibly expand privileges or access. The remaining risk is bounded to session-history recovery: partial acknowledgements or interrupted shutdown spooling may leave commits without a completed handoff.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Deferred commit ownership can end before the continuation sequence completes. Cursor stops sending after a partial acknowledgement but still removes all attached commits from its pending state. Separately, interruption between shutdown chunk appends can leave only a non-terminal batch; successful replay can delete that batch without detecting the missing terminal handoff. Under the documented contract, these paths can leave session commit history and fork-base recovery incomplete. Explicit append-failure fallback and retained session commit files mitigate the risk, but server-side preservation of deferred commits is unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified failure modes affect commit placement and recovery within existing sessions. The inspected changes do not establish cross-account access, credential exposure or additional execution authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Shutdown capture still rejects quarantined Cursor sessions and redacts transcript content before constructing spool batches. Spool paths remain gated by session-ID validation. These existing controls are retained rather than introduced by this PR.

Place observed commits at the time their Git hook ran
🐞 Bug fix🕐 20-40 Minutes
AI Description
• Stamp observed commits with hook time so the server can place them between transcript lines.
• Mark nonfinal shutdown chunks so commits stamped after their lines wait for a later chunk.
• Preserve commits in the shutdown spool when a cap prevents the next chunk from being stored.
The following are alternative approaches to this PR:
1. Assign commits to individual chunks
➕ Could avoid repeating commits across chunks and adding a more_follows field.
➖ Requires careful handling of commits after the final line and chunks that cannot be spooled.
➖ Changes commit allocation for both live delivery and shutdown recovery.
Recommendation: Keep timestamped commits on each split chunk with an explicit continuation flag. This preserves the existing batch composition while letting the server defer placement until later lines arrive; the commits-only spool fallback covers a cut-off shutdown tail.

●●● Strong
The CLI-only field cannot affect server placement unless the server contract and handler support
timestamp ordering.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The CLI emits a timestamp the server DTO cannot receive; the server processes transcript lines
before recording commits, and fork-base resolution uses the resulting event revisions.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The CLI sends `committed_at`, but the pinned server ignores it and appends observed commits after the batch's transcript lines.

## Recommended Fix
Add the optional timestamp to the server DTO and implement transcript-line placement using it before relying on this CLI field; coordinate deployment of both repos.

2. Spool caps can erase deferred commits✓ Resolved
Description
SpoolUndeliveredTranscriptTailAsync ignores the result of its commit-only fallback append after an
earlier chunk has been spooled with more_follows. If the first chunk fits but the cap leaves too
little room for both the next chunk and the fallback, replay contains only a chunk that defers its
commits, while the needs-import recovery carries no commits.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The split copies observed commits to each chunk and marks non-final chunks as having more to follow.
A cap failure does not persist the failed append, and the recovery marker and import payload contain
no observed commits.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A successful non-final shutdown chunk defers its commits, but the commit-only fallback can fail at the same spool cap that stopped the next chunk. The needs-import path does not recover those commits.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/WatchCommand.cs[3161-3171]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/TranscriptSpool.cs[51-78]
## Recommended Fix
Ensure commits are durably retained before writing a chunk that defers them, such as by reserving capacity for the commit-only batch. Check and handle the fallback append result, and test a cap that admits the first chunk but not the fallback.

3. Split reads place commits early✓ Resolved
Description
TranscriptBatchBuffer.Split sets MoreFollows on non-final chunks while retaining their observed
commits, but kcap-server's batch contract has no such field and its handler records those commits
after each chunk. When a commit belongs after lines in a later chunk, the first chunk records it
before those lines arrive; deduplication cannot change its event position.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The CLI flags non-final chunks, but the pinned server ignores `more_follows` and records their commits immediately.

- /cross_repos/kcap-server/src/Capacitor.Api.Public/Hooks/SessionActivityHookHandlers.cs[502-520]
## Recommended Fix
Add and honor the chunk flag in kcap-server, retaining commits whose timestamps follow a non-final chunk's lines until a later chunk; coordinate server deployment before depending on the flag.

4. Unstamped commits carry a null timestamp✗ Dismissed
Description
ObservedCommit.CommittedAt lacks a null-ignore attribute, so serialization writes `"committed_at":
null` instead of omitting the field when it is unset. Previously filed commits read from the session
file and commits constructed without a timestamp can reach transcript batches with that extra field.
+ [JsonPropertyName("committed_at")] public DateTimeOffset? CommittedAt { get; init; }
Relevance
●●● Strong
Optional nullable wire fields use explicit null-ignore metadata; this is a deterministic
serialization omission bug.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The shared JSON context does not set a global null-ignore condition; session commit records
deserialize through that context, and transcript batches serialize observed commits through it. This
is the same optional-field serialization pattern previously caught in this file.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The new nullable commit timestamp is serialized as an explicit null for commits without a timestamp, contrary to the intended optional wire field.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/ObservedCommit.cs[15-15]
## Recommended Fix
Add `[JsonIgnore(Condition = JsonIgnoreCondition.WhenWritingNull)]` to `CommittedAt`, and cover serialization of an unstamped commit with a test.

5. Shutdown test creates extra temp state 📘 Rule violation▣ Testability
Description
shutdown_tail_cut_by_the_cap_still_spools_its_commits declares using var tmp = new TempDir()
instead of using the test class's injected [TempDir] property. Because TUnit owns the test
fixture's temporary directory and test classes must not create manual TempDir instances, this adds
a second lifecycle path that later changes can mishandle.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The changed test method creates a new TempDir manually at line 164, while the same test class
already uses TUnit-injected test resources. The compliance rule requires test classes that need
temporary directories to use a public required property annotated with [TempDir] rather than
manually creating instances.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The new test manually creates a `TempDir` inside a TUnit test class even though the class can use its injected temporary-directory property. This introduces an unnecessary second temporary-directory lifecycle and violates the test fixture convention.
## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/ShutdownTranscriptSpoolTests.cs[160-182]
## Recommended Fix
Remove the local `using var tmp = new TempDir()` declaration and use the class's injected `[TempDir]` property for `CreateDir`, `CreateFile`, and `PathTo` calls in this test.

A chunk with more to follow leaves its later commits to the next chunk, and kcap import carries no commits, so it
spools only when the commits still fit on their own after it.
Qodo 5 (shutdown test creates its own TempDir): leaving as is. Every test in ShutdownTranscriptSpoolTests builds its own TempDir, and converting one test would mix two styles in the class.
Qodo 5 (shutdown test creates its own TempDir): leaving as is. Every test in ShutdownTranscriptSpoolTests builds its own TempDir, and converting one test would mix two styles in the class.
That’s a reasonable consistency argument for leaving finding 5 as-is. I checked the class: its tests consistently create TempDir locally, and it currently has no injected [TempDir] property, so changing only this test would indeed introduce a mixed style. The finding reflects the active rule’s stricter convention rather than a unique lifecycle defect in this test; the rule can be adjusted or disabled here: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2808173?state=active

Keep deferred commits pending after a partial chunk acknowledgement.
When Cursor returns a partial acknowledgement for a nonfinal chunk, the loop stops before sending later chunks. The server can defer commits until a later chunk, but Delivered(batch.ObservedCommits) removes them from local state. Retain those commits when the loop stops before all chunks are sent.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding at WatchCommand.cs:2999 (partial Cursor ack still marks commits delivered): out of scope here and filed as #1967. The Cursor ack loop and its Delivered call are unchanged by this PR, and the server does not record commits on a Cursor batch with lines either, so both sides need fixing together.
@rsergeenko Agreed. I verified that this PR leaves the Cursor acknowledgement loop and Delivered call unchanged. #1967 documents both the CLI defect and the server-side omission.
The finding remains valid, but it belongs in #1967 rather than blocking this PR. Both sides need the coordinated fix described there.
