Closes #1776 — AI-4144

What & why

The desktop wizard installs a local server with kcap setup --local --json and then links to the dashboard. The dashboard still asked the user to install kcap, because nothing had sent POST /api/users/me/cli-setup yet. The install-only run never sent it, and the full run skipped it for no-auth servers. Both now send it once the install commits. A no-auth server gets it on the anonymous lane, with no bearer.

Where to look

PingCliSetupAsync: on a None provider it still never reads the stored token, because that token belongs to whatever server the profile pointed at before.

Verification

  • New SetupLocalArmTests.Committed_install_reports_cli_setup_without_a_bearer: both the install-only and the full run POST the report with no Authorization header.
  • --treenode-filter "/*/*/Setup*/*": 330/330 passed.
  • Release publish: 0 IL2xxx/IL3xxx warnings.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Local installations now retain their committed setup result.
    • Local setup can report installation status without requiring authentication.
    • Authenticated setup checks continue to validate token availability, expiration, and server identity.
    • Status diagnostics now display the provider used for the current setup operation.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for installation-only and complete local setup flows, including successful no-content responses and requests without authorization headers.

📝 Walkthrough

Local JSON setup now reports the committed installation to the server without authentication. The report honors cancellation. Tests cover install-only and full setup runs and verify that no bearer value is sent.

Changes: Local setup reporting

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5493f

The local setup report is positioned before the wizard advances, and the test checks that both setup modes send the expected POST without a bearer token. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5493f

The new report avoids stored credentials and keeps normal local-install traffic on the machine. Risk appears limited, but the receiving server’s anonymous-user mapping and duplicate handling could not be independently verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended effect is a setup-status marker for the selected server’s user, carrying version and optional telemetry correlation data rather than credentials. Normal fresh local installations target localhost; the available client contract does not establish broader tenant or administrative authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Locality is selected from the supplied URL rather than enforced as an unconditional report-target restriction. Reuse preserves the registry’s ServerUrl, whose parser requires only a nonempty value. Registry writes use owner-only Unix permissions. Thus a modified non-loopback registry URL would select Anonymous, but an externally controlled registry source or privilege escalation was not established.
  • observed — Anonymous setup reporting is not a newly invented server contract: the unchanged desktop sender already permits NoAuthRequired and posts the same report. This is counterevidence to treating unauthenticated reporting itself as an authorization bypass, although it does not prove the production endpoint’s identity enforcement.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1776 is an active direct link. SetupCommand now reports local setup after the installation commits. The install-only and full local runs use the anonymous lane for no-auth servers and send no bearer token. SetupLocalArmTests.Committed_install_reports_cli_setup_without_a_bearer covers both runs and verifies the report request.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #1776. Production changes implement post-commit local setup reporting and preserve authenticated checks. Test fixture changes provide request inspection and HTTP client injection for this behavior. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

High-Level Assessment

Reuse the existing best-effort reporting helper and add an anonymous lane. Moving dashboard reporting into the installer would couple installation to a setup-specific signal without improving either setup path.

P2 Badge Bypass ambient proxies for the local setup ping

When HTTP_PROXY is configured and NO_PROXY does not cover localhost, this sends the newly added local-install report through the Anonymous lane, whose primary HttpClientHandler retains the default UseProxy = true. The installation itself uses the explicitly proxy-free LocalInstallation lane, so setup can commit successfully while this best-effort request is routed to a proxy that cannot reach the user's loopback server; the exception is then swallowed and the dashboard continues showing the install prompt. Select a proxy-free transport when serverUrl is a loopback URL.

Fixed in 5493f63: a loopback no-auth server now takes the proxy-free Loopback lane. The local server accepts a request without a version header, so the lane's missing observation headers are fine.

Remediation recommended

1. Interrupts stall after local install ✓ Resolved
Description
RunLocalJsonAsync awaits PingCliSetupAsync inside its interrupt-deferral scope, but the ping
does not observe the deferral's cancellation token. If the user presses Ctrl+C or the desktop wizard
closes while the POST is pending, the process can wait for the ping's five-second timeout before
exiting.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2705]

+            await PingCliSetupAsync(committed.ServerUrl, profile: "", AuthProvider.None);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent interruption precedent supports reporting cancellation and preventing post-install waits from
delaying exit.

PR-#1667
PR-#333

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new call is awaited before the deferral is disposed. An interrupt cancels the deferral token,
but the ping waits on a POST or a five-second delay without that token; disposal, which exits on an
interrupt, happens only after the wait returns.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The new post-install ping runs inside an interrupt deferral but ignores its cancellation token, delaying exit when the POST stalls.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2701-2707]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2929-2989]

## Recommended Fix
Pass the deferral token to the ping and make its wait and HTTP request respond to cancellation, while retaining best-effort handling of ordinary ping failures.

2. A test hook comment restates its purpose ✓ Resolved
Description
The new OnRequestMessage summary only says that the callback observes requests for a header test,
which is already clear from the property type and usage. It adds no invariant, constraint,
workaround, or behavior-critical rationale for future maintainers.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/LocalEdition/Fakes/FakeLocalServer.cs[R23-24]

+ /// <summary>Sees every request whole, for a test that checks its headers.</summary>
+    public Action<HttpRequestMessage>? OnRequestMessage { get; set; }
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent precedent accepts removing comments that merely restate the following test's behavior.

PR-#1744

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The added comment merely describes that the callback sees requests for a header-checking test,
without documenting a non-obvious constraint or behavior-critical rationale.

Rule 2762993: Restrict comments to documenting non-obvious, behavior‑critical constraints
test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/LocalEdition/Fakes/FakeLocalServer.cs[23-24]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The `OnRequestMessage` comment restates the property's obvious purpose without documenting a behavior-critical constraint or rationale.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/LocalEdition/Fakes/FakeLocalServer.cs[23-24]

## Recommended Fix
Remove the summary comment, or rewrite it only if the callback has a non-obvious constraint such as invocation timing, filtering behavior, or lifecycle requirements that future maintainers need to preserve.

Informational

3. Dashboard prompts after failed report 📎 Requirement gap ☼ Reliability
Description
PingCliSetupAsync catches report failures and returns normally after logging only under
KCAP_DEBUG. When the POST times out or throws, the local setup still completes and the wizard can
open the dashboard without an in-session retry, so the install prompt remains until a later app
start.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[R2704-2705]

+ // The app's wizard links to the dashboard before it reports anything itself.
+            await PingCliSetupAsync(committed.ServerUrl, profile: "", AuthProvider.None);
Relevance

● Weak

Exact precedent preserves best-effort reporting and swallowed failures so setup completion is never
blocked.

PR-#113

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires the completed local-server onboarding to be reflected before the dashboard
opens and treats a failed report left until the next app start as a violation. The new install-only
call awaits PingCliSetupAsync, but that method catches failures without propagating, retrying, or
recording a pending report, so a failed request still allows setup to finish and the dashboard flow
to continue.

Report installation before opening the dashboard
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2704-2705]
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2990-2993]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The install-only setup now sends the CLI-setup report, but `PingCliSetupAsync` swallows failures and the command completes without retrying or preserving a pending report. A timeout or failed POST therefore leaves the dashboard showing the install prompt until a later app start.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2704-2705]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs[2990-2993]

## Recommended Fix
Make a failed CLI-setup report retryable during the same onboarding flow, or persist a pending report and retry it before allowing the dashboard to open. Preserve the no-bearer behavior for anonymous local servers and keep failures from exposing stored tokens to a different server.

2701-2705: Check the install-only report path.

PingCliSetupAsync is awaited inside the try block that runs after InstallAsync. The method swallows every exception except cancellation, so a failed report does not fail the install. This is correct.

The comment at Line 2704 says "The app's wizard links to the dashboard before it reports anything itself". It explains the reason for the ping and meets the comment test. No change is needed.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Strengthen the test so it cannot pass without a request.

authorization is set with ??= to "" when no header exists. The assertion IsEqualTo("") passes only if OnRequestMessage ran, because the initial value is null. The _log assertion also confirms the call, so the test is sound.

The test does not check the exit code. A failed install would fail the _log assertion first, so the gap is small. Add an exit assertion for a clearer failure message.
