Part of #1098 — AI-3084

What & why

Polishes the desktop app's plan, artefacts, and chat tool-group surfaces so each element has a single home and a consistent typographic hierarchy:

  • Plan section: InProgress task counts and row marks use KcapPurpleBrush, with pixel-independent centering (UseLayoutRounding="False" on the 5×5 inner dot inside the 12×12 ring) and pulsing gated on session activity (IsActive).
  • Artefacts & reader: Drops the duplicate ARTEFACTS sidebar summary row and [Plan] pill badges across PlanDocumentRow, ArtefactsView, and DocumentReader, collapsing the reader header into a single-line metadata bar (Path on the left, KindLabel · MetaLabel on the right above a 1px divider) so the markdown's own heading leads.
  • Chat tool groups & cards: Gives every tool row and ToolCard a verb-first hierarchy (ToolRowLabel and ToolCardTitle in KcapTextBrush, arguments and card targets in KcapMutedBrush, distinct card paths/versions on line 2 in KcapFaintBrush, including Looked up tools for ToolSearch and ToolSummary.RowLabel for built-in tools without a prose "description"), strips nested Border.toolCard box chrome, and centers non-square category icons in ChatKindHeader.

📝 Walkthrough

The change updates chat tool labels, query details, and tool-card presentation. It synchronizes plan task-count activity indicators and updates document and artefact presentation. Tests cover the changed behavior and layouts.

Changes: Chat tool rows and cards

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tool labels and query details
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/KcapToolCatalogue.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolSummary.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs, src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Codex/CodexCommandClassifier.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/KcapToolCatalogueTests.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ToolSummaryTests.cs
Recognizes tool searches, formats selected tool queries, and adds built-in tool row labels. Chat rows use these labels and display extracted details. The find classifier excludes commands with listed mutating or output-producing predicates. Tests cover query formatting, row labels, and classification.
Tool-card content and layout

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5465c

Tool searches listing names on separate lines can omit later names from the chat detail. This is a bounded display issue and need not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5465c

A command-classification correction propagates into saved transcripts and live events. The examined paths keep classification separate from permission grants and command execution, but downstream consumers can observe different categories.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated propagation is through Codex classification metadata and desktop rendering. The inspected producers attach categories to events rather than dispatching commands or granting additional authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The examined ACP permission path evaluates the permission request's own ToolCall and kind, not CodexCommandClassifier output. Its interactive permission presets exclude Execute and require an unambiguous allow-once option for covered kinds.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Plan-count recomputation preserves value-based notification suppression. The existing reader rejects stale session leases, queues refresh follow-ups, and supports teardown cancellation; the new activity transition does not replace those ownership and lifecycle controls.

User-facing changes in this branch

  1. Plan section (ABOUT THIS WORK → PLAN)

    • In-progress color & animation: In-progress task count and active task dot use KcapPurpleBrush (#A78BFA) instead of muted grey, with pixel-independent centering (UseLayoutRounding="False" on the 5×5 inner dot inside the 12×12 ring) and pulsing gated on session activity (IsActive) so idle sessions stay still.
    • Plan document link: Removed the [Plan] pill from the PlanDocumentRow button in the right sidebar (<filename> ↗, tinted in KcapInfoBrush when open in the Artefacts tab).
  2. Sidebar & Artefacts tab (WorkContextView, ArtefactsView, DocumentReader)

    • Sidebar deduplication: Removed the redundant ARTEFACTS 1 document ↗ summary section from the right sidebar (Artefacts in the top tab bar has the exact same visibility condition, and PLAN links directly to declared plan documents).
    • Compact single-line reader header: Replaced the 3-row DocumentReader header (which repeated the filename above the markdown's own heading and showed a [Plan] pill box) with a compact single-line metadata bar (docs/tmp-kcap-ui-plan.md on the left, Plan · Declared 4h ago · 1 KB on the right) separated from the markdown body by a subtle 1px bottom border, and replaced the pill badge in the DOCUMENTS master list with a plain muted subtitle.
  3. Chat tool groups & inline cards (ChatTabView, ChatBubbleStyles, ChatKindHeader, ToolSummary, KcapToolCatalogue, ToolCategoryIcons)

    • Consistent verb-first tool rows: Every tool row without a prose "description" now leads with a human verb in primary KcapTextBrush (Wrote file, Edited file, Read file, Searched files, Listed files, Ran command, Looked up tools, Attached work item, Updated task) and demotes the trailing path, query, or argument to KcapMutedBrush.
    • Two-line verb-first ToolCard rows: Declared plan and Published page cards sit flush with sibling tool rows (no nested box chrome), leading on Line 1 with the human verb (Declared plan, Published page) in KcapTextBrush + target name (tmp-kcap-ui-plan.md, Kcap UI smoke) in KcapMutedBrush, and showing the distinct path or version (docs/tmp-kcap-ui-plan.md, v1 · Private) on Line 2 in KcapFaintBrush.
    • Card actions & header icons: Ordered Copy link before Open ↗ (Margin="0,0,-8,0", ClipToBounds="False" on the group list so the hover pill isn't clipped), centered non-square category icons inside the 14×14 ChatKindHeader slot, and updated ToolCategory.Flow to a balanced 18×14 branching workflow icon.

Remediation recommended

1. Reference line omits required links ✗ Dismissed
Description
The first non-empty description line is Part of #1098 — AI-3084, so it does not contain a GitHub
closing keyword followed by the GitHub number. The pull request therefore lacks the required single
reference line connecting the GitHub issue and the Linear issue.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/DocumentRow.cs[11]

+    public string KindLabel { get; } = kind switch { "plan" => "Plan", "spec" => "Spec", "design" => "Design", _ => "Document" };
Relevance

●●● Strong

Repository guidance explicitly requires a closing GitHub keyword alongside the Linear reference.

PR-#659

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The supplied pull request description begins with Part of #1098 — AI-3084; it has neither
Closes, Fixes, nor Resolves before the GitHub reference, contrary to the checklist requirement
that both references appear together on one closing line.

Rule 2897991: PR description must contain both GitHub and Linear issue references; PR title must not contain issue IDs

2. Merge title lacks issue reference ✗ Dismissed
Description
The pull request title is Polish plan, artefacts, and tool-call presentation, which is imperative
but does not end with a GitHub issue reference in parentheses. The merge subject therefore fails the
required single-clause format even though it remains under the 80-character limit.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[R958-960]

+                        var isToolSearch = entry is null && KcapToolCatalogue.IsToolSearch(name);
                        var category = entry?.Category ?? ToolSummary.Categorize(name, e.ToolInputJson);
-                        var label = entry?.Label ?? KcapToolCatalogue.ForeignLabel(name);
+                        var foreignLabel = entry is null && !isToolSearch ? KcapToolCatalogue.ForeignLabel(name) : null;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Repository guidance enforces issue references, and similar PR compliance guidance was accepted.

PR-#659

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The supplied pull request title lacks the required trailing (#<digits>) reference, while the cited
checklist rule requires the entire merge subject to match that format.

Rule 2897961: Enforce single-clause imperative commit subject with GitHub issue reference and 80-char limit

3. Shell and agent control calls show the wrong verb ✓ Resolved
Description
ToolSummary.RowLabel picks the verb from the category alone, and Names puts KillShell,
BashOutput and write_stdin under Command, and TaskOutput, TaskStop, wait_agent,
close_agent, interrupt_agent and list_agents under Agent. These calls rarely carry a
description, so the chat now labels killing a shell or polling its output as "Ran command", and
stopping, waiting on or listing agents as "Ran agent".
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolSummary.cs[R117-126]

+        return category switch {
+            ToolCategory.Read      => "Read file",
+            ToolCategory.Edit      => "Edited file",
+            ToolCategory.Command   => "Ran command",
+            ToolCategory.Search    => "Searched files",
+            ToolCategory.WebSearch => "Searched the web",
+            ToolCategory.Fetch     => "Fetched page",
+            ToolCategory.Skill     => "Loaded skill",
+            ToolCategory.Agent     => "Ran agent",
+            ToolCategory.Plan      => "Updated the plan",
Relevance

●● Moderate

The generic verbs plausibly misrepresent auxiliary tools, but no close historical precedent confirms
this team’s response.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The Names map assigns these auxiliary tools to Command and Agent. RowLabel maps every Command to
"Ran command" and every Agent to "Ran agent". ChatTabViewModel now uses this label for every
uncatalogued, non-foreign row.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
`ToolSummary.RowLabel` turns every Command-category tool into "Ran command" and every Agent-category tool into "Ran agent". This includes KillShell, BashOutput, write_stdin, TaskOutput, TaskStop, wait_agent, close_agent, interrupt_agent and list_agents, so those rows describe the action wrongly.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolSummary.cs[110-129]

## Recommended Fix
Before the category switch, check these tool names and return accurate verbs, for example "Stopped shell", "Read shell output", "Sent input", "Read agent output", "Stopped agent", "Waited on agent" and "Listed agents". Returning null for them also works, because the row then falls back to its detail. Add tests to ToolSummaryTests.

4. Readers cannot distinguish document types ✗ Dismissed
Description
The plan document template removes the Kind text and replaces it with a filename and an arrow,
without adding a document-kind label to the button or its accessible name. When plan, spec, and
design documents have filenames that do not identify their types, the sidebar no longer tells
readers which kind they are opening.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/WorkContextView.axaml[681]

-                                                <TextBlock Text="{Binding Kind}" FontSize="12" LineHeight="16" Foreground="{StaticResource KcapFaintBrush}" />
Relevance

●● Moderate

The usability concern is plausible, but removing redundant kind text appears intentional and matches
the PR’s stated presentation goal.

PR-#1248

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The row model still carries a separate Kind and FileName, but the replacement template binds only
FileName; its tooltip binds Path rather than Kind. The changed smoke test also removes its assertion
that the document kind appears in the expanded section.

5. File deletions appear as searches ✓ Resolved
Description
RowLabel assigns “Searched files” to every call categorized as Search, including shell commands
that the command classifier categorizes as file listings. For an exec_command input of
{"cmd":"find . -delete"}, that classifier ignores -delete, so the new verb describes a
destructive command as a search even though its command text remains visible beside it.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolSummary.cs[121]

+            ToolCategory.Search    => "Searched files",
Relevance

●● Moderate

The classifier edge case can mislabel destructive commands, but no closely matching historical
precedent was found.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The command text reader accepts cmd; Categorize maps the classifier's list_files hint to
Search. FindClassify returns list_files for a find invocation without -name or -iname,
regardless of -delete, and the new fallback turns that category into the visible verb.

Informational

6. Tool row label docs still say built-ins have none ✓ Resolved
Description
The doc comment on ToolCallItem.Label still says the label is null for a built-in tool, whose row
is the detail alone. ChatTabViewModel now fills it from ToolSummary.RowLabel for built-ins, so the
next person to read it will misjudge when HasLabel and the muted labelled detail style apply.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[R965-966]

+                        var label = entry?.Label ?? (isToolSearch ? "Looked up tools" : foreignLabel ?? ToolSummary.RowLabel(name, category, e.ToolInputJson));
                        var item = new ToolCallItem(name, detail, category, label, entry?.Card ?? ToolCardKind.None, e.ToolInputJson);
Relevance

●●● Strong

The comment is stale after behavior changed; accepted precedents favor updating documentation to
current invariants.

PR-#1328

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Rewrite the comment to say the label is the verb phrase every row leads with: a catalogue label, "Looked up tools", a foreign MCP label, or a built-in verb from `ToolSummary.RowLabel`. It is null only when the built-in input carries its own description, or for a question.

7. Artefacts summary text is left unused ✓ Resolved
Description
ArtefactsTabViewModel.SummaryText, and the property-changed event it still raises, only existed
for the sidebar's ArtefactsSummaryRow, and this PR removes that row. Nothing in src binds it any
more, so the property is dead code that still has to be maintained.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/WorkContextViewModel.cs[238]

-    public ReactiveCommand<Unit, Unit> OpenArtefactsCommand { get; }
Relevance

●●● Strong

Removing the sole binding makes SummaryText dead code; the team accepts removal of unused
compatibility members.

PR-#766

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
A grep for SummaryText across src finds only ArtefactsTabViewModel's own definition and its
RaisePropertyChanged call. The removed WorkContextView row was the only binding.

## Issue description
`SummaryText` has no consumer now that the sidebar summary row is gone.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ArtefactsTabViewModel.cs[47-47]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ArtefactsTabViewModel.cs[253-253]

8. Kind-to-label mapping now lives in two places ✓ Resolved
Description
DocumentRow.KindLabel adds a plan/spec/design/Document switch that is a copy of the one
DocumentReaderViewModel already uses for its own KindLabel. A new document kind added to only
one of them would make the artefacts list and the reader header show different labels for the same
document.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/DocumentRow.cs[11]

+    public string KindLabel { get; } = kind switch { "plan" => "Plan", "spec" => "Spec", "design" => "Design", _ => "Document" };
Relevance

●● Moderate

Duplicate mappings create maintenance drift, but evidence for centralizing this specific
presentation mapping is limited.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
DocumentReaderViewModel line 19 contains the same switch, built from row.Kind.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/DocumentReaderViewModel.cs[7-19]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The kind-to-label switch now exists in both DocumentRow and DocumentReaderViewModel.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/DocumentReaderViewModel.cs[19-19]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/DocumentRow.cs[11-11]

## Recommended Fix
In DocumentReaderViewModel, set `KindLabel = row.KindLabel` and delete its own switch.

🔵 Trivial · Update the Counts invariant. · PlanSectionViewModel.cs:58

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Update the Counts invariant. SyncCounts() also replaces Counts when IsActive changes and every number stays the same. Remove or correct the sentence about numbers so readers do not rely on that invariant. As per coding guidelines, “When you touch code, shorten and de-historicise the comments on and around it: delete anything the Never list bans, keep only what still passes the test.”

Correct the comment describing `Counts` so it does not claim the instance
changes only when a number changes; `SyncCounts()` can also replace it when
`IsActive` changes. Keep the comment focused on the valid `Counts` behavior.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the document-row test description. The test now requires ArtefactsSummaryRow to be absent, but this comment still describes that row as a way into the tab. Update the comment and test name to state the behavior the test pins. As per coding guidelines, “A test's doc comment says what the test pins.”
