Change

On a phone, holding an arrow on the touch key bar sent one key and then nothing. It now repeats like a held hardware key.

  • src/lib/keyRepeat.ts holds the timing as a pure state machine with an injectable clock: no key on press, the first repeat after KEY_REPEAT_DELAY_MS (400 ms), then one every KEY_REPEAT_INTERVAL_MS (50 ms) until release. Only ArrowUp/ArrowDown/ArrowLeft/ArrowRight key items repeat, including saved combinations such as Ctrl+←; Esc, Tab, Enter, ^C, catalog keys and the modifier and mode buttons do not.
  • A tap is unchanged: it still sends one key through onKey → pressKey on click. After a hold has repeated, the click that follows the release is swallowed, so a hold never ends with an extra key. Every repeat goes through the same onKey path (latest callback through a ref), so held Ctrl/Alt/Shift and saved combinations apply to each repeated key.
  • Key in KeyBar.tsx tracks the primary pointer with pointer capture. The repeat stops on pointerup, pointercancel, lostpointercapture, the button becoming disabled, the document becoming hidden, the window losing focus, and unmount. KeyBar is not remounted when the pane changes, so PaneTerminal passes a holdScope (paneStorageId:view) and a change of pane or lens cancels the hold.
  • A sideways swipe that starts on an arrow keeps scrolling the row and sends nothing: moving more than 10 px before the repeat starts cancels the pending hold, as does the pointercancel the browser sends when it takes over the pan.
  • Keys prevent contextmenu, and .key sets -webkit-touch-callout: none, so a long press opens no callout or menu.
  • No setting, WS frame or server change: the existing keys frame and the server's queue merge carry the repeat. No new UI strings.
  • Docs: docs/terminal-input.md (key bar), docs/development.md and scripts/ci-browser.sh list the new browser regression. CHANGELOG: Unreleased → Added.

On the issue's open questions this PR takes the narrow side: only the four arrows repeat, and 400 ms / 50 ms are fixed constants.

Closes #718

Validation

  • bun run generate:types --check, bun run typecheck, bun run build: pass.
  • bun run test:unit: 2237 pass, 0 fail, run with TMPDIR=/tmp. New src/lib/keyRepeat.test.ts covers tap/hold boundaries at the delay and interval, release and cancel, the one-shot click suppression, the movement slop and which items repeat. scripts/ci-browser.test.ts now expects 22 browser scripts.
  • New scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts (demo transport, 393×852 touch context, CDP touch events): all 7 checks pass, in three runs before rebasing onto current main and one after:
    • a tap on ← sends exactly one key;
    • holding ← sends 10–11 keys, none before the delay, and nothing after release;
    • a hold shorter than the delay sends one key;
    • a horizontal swipe from ← scrolls the overflowing row and sends no key;
    • a held Esc does not repeat (Chrome sends no click after a long touch, so it sends no key, as before this change);
    • with Ctrl held, every repeated key is Ctrl+←;
    • a held arrow prevents the contextmenu default.
  • scripts/sticky-modifiers-regression.ts, scripts/key-bar-customization-demo-regression.ts, scripts/terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts: pass.
  • Tried by hand on a phone over Tailscale Serve against a server built from this branch: tap, hold, release and sideways scroll behaved as described.
  • Not run: the full bun run test:integration and bun run test:ui.

## Change

On a phone, holding an arrow on the touch key bar sent one key and then nothing. It now repeats like a held hardware key.

- `src/lib/keyRepeat.ts` holds the timing as a pure state machine with an injectable clock: no key on press, the first repeat after `KEY_REPEAT_DELAY_MS` (400 ms), then one every `KEY_REPEAT_INTERVAL_MS` (50 ms) until release. Only `ArrowUp`/`ArrowDown`/`ArrowLeft`/`ArrowRight` key items repeat, including saved combinations such as Ctrl+←; Esc, Tab, Enter, ^C, catalog keys and the modifier and mode buttons do not.
- A tap is unchanged: it still sends one key through `onKey` → `pressKey` on `click`. After a hold has repeated, the click that follows the release is swallowed, so a hold never ends with an extra key. Every repeat goes through the same `onKey` path (latest callback through a ref), so held Ctrl/Alt/Shift and saved combinations apply to each repeated key.
- `Key` in `KeyBar.tsx` tracks the primary pointer with pointer capture. The repeat stops on `pointerup`, `pointercancel`, `lostpointercapture`, the button becoming disabled, the document becoming hidden, the window losing focus, and unmount. KeyBar is not remounted when the pane changes, so `PaneTerminal` passes a `holdScope` (`paneStorageId:view`) and a change of pane or lens cancels the hold.
- A sideways swipe that starts on an arrow keeps scrolling the row and sends nothing: moving more than 10 px before the repeat starts cancels the pending hold, as does the `pointercancel` the browser sends when it takes over the pan.
- Keys prevent `contextmenu`, and `.key` sets `-webkit-touch-callout: none`, so a long press opens no callout or menu.
- No setting, WS frame or server change: the existing `keys` frame and the server's queue merge carry the repeat. No new UI strings.
- Docs: `docs/terminal-input.md` (key bar), `docs/development.md` and `scripts/ci-browser.sh` list the new browser regression. CHANGELOG: `Unreleased → Added`.

On the issue's open questions this PR takes the narrow side: only the four arrows repeat, and 400 ms / 50 ms are fixed constants.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Holding an arrow button in the touch key bar now repeats the key after a brief delay, including saved arrow combinations and active modifiers. Tapping still sends one key, and other buttons do not repeat.
    • Swipe sideways to scroll the key-bar row without sending a key.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Long presses no longer open callouts or context menus. Held keys stop repeating when the press is canceled or interrupted.

Walkthrough

Adds repeat-on-hold behavior for key-bar arrows. Repeats start after a delay and stop when the hold ends or is canceled. The change also adds touch-browser regression checks and updates browser CI and feature documentation.

Changes

Touch Key-Bar Arrow Repeat

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repeat controller and timing tests
src/lib/keyRepeat.ts, src/lib/keyRepeat.test.ts
Adds a repeat controller for the four arrow keys, with configurable clock behavior, delay and interval timing, movement handling, release and cancellation behavior. Fake-clock tests cover timing, click suppression, cancellation, and repeatability.
Key-bar pointer and pane integration
src/components/KeyBar.tsx, src/components/KeyBar.css, src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx
Connects repeat behavior to pointer events, retains click handling for non-repeatable keys, and cancels holds on key or page lifecycle changes. The pane supplies a hold scope based on its storage ID and current view.
Browser regression and feature documentation
scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, docs/development.md, docs/terminal-input.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds browser checks for arrow taps and holds, short holds, sideways swipes, Escape, sticky Ctrl, and context-menu prevention. Registers the regression in browser CI and documents the behavior.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0bfa1

Holding an arrow in the touch key bar now repeats it, and the change looks ready apart from a missing PR link in the changelog entry, which should be added before release.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0bfa1

Held arrows reuse the existing terminal input controls and are canceled when their target or availability changes. No introduced security weakness was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns browser-specific interruption behavior and incomplete downstream verification.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added input source is a held browser arrow button. Its effective reach remains the selected machine and pane through the existing terminal socket; the hold adds repetition but does not confer another role or credential. This bounds the inspected client path, not the security of every downstream terminal program.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Repeats preserve existing input restrictions: pressKey rejects composition, onData rejects observation, secret-input, and held states, and socket sends require a connected interact-role connection with readiness for the addressed pane. The rendered key bar is also disabled when composition, disconnection, unreadiness, held state, or termination prevents input.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Hold ownership is guarded by the active primary pointer. Pointer release, cancellation, lost capture, disabled-state changes, scope changes, blur, hidden-document transitions, and unmount stop or cancel repeat work. Movement beyond the slop threshold before repetition also prevents an unintended swipe from producing input.

Thank you @zerodice0! This conflicted with the current main, so it has been carried into #758 together with #731 and #713, which edit the same file (PaneTerminal.tsx). Your commit is kept with you as its author, the new hold-repeat regression runs in the browser lane (now 26 scripts), and the changelog entry links this PR and credits you. Please follow #758 for the merge; this PR is left open for the maintainer to close.

## Change

Three maintainer-approved contributions to the terminal, carried onto
current `main` in one PR because all three edit
`src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx` and each conflicted with `main`. Each
keeps its contributor as commit author (cherry-picked in order #731,
#719, #713; the contributors' commit messages carry the full design
notes).

- **Cursor shape and blink in Settings → Terminal** (#731 by
@bluzername): Block / Bar / Underline and a Blinking cursor switch,
saved per device through `sanitizeSettings`, applied live through
`term.options` (no remount). A program's own DECSCUSR can still change
it. Strings in ko/ja/zh.
- **A held key-bar arrow repeats like a held key** (#719 by @zerodice0):
first repeat after 400 ms, then every 50 ms until release; only the four
arrows (including saved arrow combinations and held modifiers) repeat; a
tap still sends one key; a sideways swipe scrolls the row and sends
nothing; a long press opens no callout. `PaneTerminal` passes a
`holdScope` so a pane or lens change cancels a hold. New
`scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts` is in the browser lane.
- **Two-finger pinch changes the terminal font size on a phone** (#713
by @zerodice0): the font follows the fingers live (10–22 px) with a size
badge, the shared pty gets one resize when a finger lifts, `touchcancel`
restores the starting size. New `scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts`
runs in `scripts/ui-regression.ts`.

Conflict resolution only: the cursor props go on the `PaneTerminal` that
`PaneCanvas` now renders, `holdScope` and the pinch badge sit on
`main`'s current KeyBar line and terminal host, and
`scripts/ci-browser.test.ts` expects 26 browser scripts. The review
findings on the three PRs were CodeRabbit's missing changelog links; the
changelog entries are added in a separate commit with both PR links and
credit.

Closes #620, Closes #718, Closes #707

Supersedes #731, #719, #713

## Verification

Before the change (branch scripts and tests against `main`'s `src/`):
- `bun scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts`: FAIL, "a held Left
repeats before release (got 1)".
- `bun scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts` (isolated test session):
FAIL, "pinch start shows the size badge".
- `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./src/lib/settings.test.ts`: FAIL on
the cursor defaults test.

On this branch:
- `bun run generate:types --check`, `bun run typecheck`, `bun run
build`: PASS.
- `bun run test:unit`: 2472 pass, 8 skip, 0 fail (includes settings,
keyRepeat, pinchFontSize, i18n, motion and ci-browser tests).
- `bun scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts`: PASS (tap, hold 10–11
repeats, short hold, swipe, Esc, sticky Ctrl, contextmenu).
- `bun scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts` (isolated test session) and
`CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts`: PASS.
- `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` (every Settings page
at 390 and 320 px) and `bun
scripts/key-bar-customization-demo-regression.ts`: PASS.
- Phone (390×844, touch) on demo fixtures: a saved Bar/no-blink draws
`xterm-cursor-bar` without blink; choosing Underline and Blinking in
Settings changes the live cursor to `xterm-cursor-underline
xterm-cursor-blink`; a pinch shows the `21px` badge and saves 21 on
release.

After merging `main` (5792d71, #755; the only conflict was CHANGELOG,
both sections kept): `bun run typecheck` PASS; settings, keyRepeat,
pinchFontSize, i18n, motion, paneLens and ci-browser tests 94 pass, 0
fail; `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts`, `bun
scripts/key-bar-hold-repeat-regression.ts` and `bun
scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` PASS.
