feat(terminal): an Alt key in the touch key bar, and optional keys chosen in Settings - #487
Conversation
…osen in Settings Alt holds for one key like Ctrl: ESC before a character, the Alt modifier on cursor and editing keys. Settings > Appearance > Key bar turns Alt off or adds Shift+Tab, Home/End, PgUp/PgDn, ^D, ^Z, |, ~ and /.

📝 SummarySummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe terminal key bar now supports configurable extra keys, with Alt enabled by default. Settings persist the selected keys. Alt modifies supported terminal input once, and the Appearance settings provide controls for the optional keys. ChangesTerminal Key Bar
Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Change: Feature Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Pane switching or pasting one character can send an unintended Alt-modified input. Fix those edge cases and the translation-key violation before merging, or explicitly accept the bounded input risk. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The existing terminal permission checks remain in place. However, pending Alt state can survive a pane switch or removal of the Alt button, unexpectedly changing later input. No privilege expansion was identified in the inspected path. Retained concerns

- Around line 166-167: Update the existing pane-change reset in PaneTerminal to
clear both altRef and altArmed, so switching panes cannot carry an armed Alt
modifier into the newly selected pane.
- Line 874: Update the input handling around altRef.current and altSequence to
distinguish paste events from keystrokes using a paste-source signal, not input
length; pass one-character pastes through unchanged without converting them to
Alt sequences or clearing the armed Alt state.

…h the next pane's first key Review finding on #487: the pane-change reset cleared xterm but left the key bar's armed modifier, so switching panes with Alt (or Ctrl, which had the same gap) armed sent the modifier with the first key typed in the new pane. Both arms are cleared with the rest of the pane-change reset. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Its branch had appended the tab-strip sentence to the fonts entry under [0.3.50], which was released before #479 merged. The sentence is its own entry under [0.3.51] Fixed, and the 0.3.50 entry links #473 alone again. Bumps package.json and herdr-plugin.toml to 0.3.51 and moves the Unreleased notes under [0.3.51] - 2026-10-06, with the compare link. Raises the remote PC bundle to 18: #368 adds the `take-over` capability the bridge advertises, and #477, #483, #484, #485 and #486 change what the bridge reads (transcripts, prompts, process start times, a pane's Codex store), so a remote PC on bundle 17 keeps the old behaviour until its bridge is updated. Push the `remote-v18` tag and let the bundle workflow publish before running release.yml. Change
The touch key bar under the terminal (Esc, Tab, Ctrl, arrows, ^C) had no Alt and no way to add the keys a phone keyboard hides.
CSI 1;3D,CSI 5;3~). Ctrl and Alt armed together send ESC + the control code. A paste or a report the terminal answers with (CPR, focus, mouse) passes through unchanged and leaves Alt armed (altSequenceinsrc/lib/keys.ts).|,~,/. Each has a fixed place in the row (Shift+Tab after Tab, Alt after Ctrl, Home/End and PgUp/PgDn after the arrows, the rest after ^C); the order is not editable. Stored askeyBarExtrasin the existing settings record, sanitized to known keys in bar order.term.input(), so no new send path. The input line and chat composer are untouched.EXTRA_KEY_CAPSregistered as a label map ini18n.test.ts; key-cap names (Control D/Z, Shift Tab) added to the same-on-purpose set like Control C.docs/guide.md,docs/terminal-input.md, CHANGELOG.Note: with Alt on by default the row is 10 keys, so on a ~390px phone ^C now sits past the right edge and the row scrolls (it already scrolled on narrow cover screens).
